1998 Ford Club wagon problems
The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).
With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).
The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 1998 Ford Club wagon problems
Based on the search results, there are several common problems with the 1998 Ford Club Wagon, as reported by owners and mechanics.
- Brakes: The two mechanics also have different opinions on the condition of the brakes. The more professional mechanic suggests that the rotors, bearings, and pads need to be replaced, while the more casual mechanic believes that they only need a cleaning. The danger of driving with brakes that are nearing replacement is that they may not provide adequate stopping power, and it can be difficult to notice the gradual decline in performance. If the brakes are not replaced, they could fail completely, leading to a dangerous situation.
- Transmission Fluid Replacement: The two mechanics disagree on whether or not to replace the transmission fluid. The more professional mechanic suggests that it is a good time to drain and replace the fluid, while the more casual mechanic warns that if the fluid has never been changed, the transmission may be used to running on thicker fluid. Replacing the transmission fluid can help prevent future problems, but if the fluid has never been changed, replacing it all at once could cause the transmission to slip.
- Serpentine Belt: Both mechanics suggest that the serpentine belt needs to be replaced, but the estimated cost of labor is much higher than the expected cost of the belt itself. The danger of driving with a worn-out serpentine belt is that it could fail, leading to a breakdown or other issues with the engine. Replacing the serpentine belt can prevent these problems, but it is important to ensure that the correct belt is used and that it is installed correctly.
- Spark Plugs and Air Filter: The two mechanics disagree on whether or not the spark plugs and air filter need to be replaced. The more casual mechanic suggests that they are shot, while the more professional mechanic believes they are fine. The danger of driving with worn-out spark plugs and air filters is that it could lead to reduced engine performance, decreased fuel efficiency, and potentially dangerous driving conditions. Replacing the spark plugs and air filter can help prevent these problems and ensure that the engine is running at its best.
- Engine Problems: There have been reports of engine problems with the 1998 Ford Club Wagon, specifically related to the spark plugs. One owner reported that the #3 spark plug took an unapproved leave of absence, grounding the vehicle for two months. This issue could lead to engine failure, potentially causing a crash or fire. It is important to ensure that the spark plugs are in good condition and properly installed to prevent this problem.
- Door Locks and Door Retention Components: There have been reports of issues with the door locks and door retention components on the 1998 Ford Club Wagon. Specifically, the strikers for the 60/40 door single latch system were found to contain stress cracks at the striker lower stake joint. This issue could lead to the door not being properly secured in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury or property damage. It is important to ensure that the door locks and door retention components are in good condition and properly installed to prevent this problem.
In conclusion, the 1998 Ford Club Wagon has several common problems that owners should be aware of. These issues can lead to dangerous driving conditions, engine failure, and other problems. It is important to ensure that the vehicle is properly maintained and that any issues are addressed promptly to prevent further problems and ensure safe driving conditions.

I AM WEIGHING MY OPTIONS; SHOULD I ATTEMPT AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR ONLY TO HAVE IT FAIL IN THE NEAR FUTURE OR SHOULD I RETURN IT TO THE SHOWROOM OF MY CLOSEST FORD DEALER AFTER HOURS? VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-08-01
- VIN: 1FMRE11L3WH
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR OUR 1998 FORD CLUB WAGON IN AUGUST 2007. I KEEP CALLING TO GET AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE PART(IT HAS TO DO WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL DEFECT THAT CAN CATCH FIRE) AND NO ONE HAS THE PARTS. IN SEPTEMBER, WE RECEIVE A CARD SAYING THAT THE THAT "UNFORESEEN SHORTAGE" HAS MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR FORD TO REPLACE THE PART AT THIS TIME. THEY ARE OFFERING A "BAND AID" APPROACH BY ONLY DISCONNECTING THE CRUISE CONTROL UNTIL THE PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. I FIND THIS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. THE BEAN COUNTER OBVIOUSLY BLEW IT FOR FORD AND NOW WE THE CONSUMERS ARE PAYING THE PRICE. I CALLED AGAIN TODAY, NOVEMBER 3, AND STILL THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AND WAS TOLD THEY MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL JANUARY? I ALSO FOUND OUT TODAY THAT OUR LINCOLN TOWN CAR IS ON THE LIST AND WE HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION CONCERNING THIS CAR! NOW, WE HAVE TWO CARS WAITING FOR A PART THAT WON'T BE AVAILABLE UNTIL WHO KNOW WHEN! NO ONE CAN PROVIDE A STRAIGHT ANSWER. I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE A DIRECT RESPONSE TO MY COMPLAINT. I ALSO WANT A GUARANTEE THAT OUR TWO VEHICLES WILL BE FIRST ON THE LIST TO GET THE CRUISE CONTROL PARTS REPLACED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. FORD HAS ALLOWED ALL OF US THAT TRUSTED THEM ENOUGH TO PURCHASE THEIR VEHICLES TO DRIVE THEM ALL THIS TIME BEFORE THEY EVER PUT OUT A RECALL. THAT IS NINE AND A HALF YEARS! TRUST IS A DIFFICULT THING TO GET BACK ONCE IT IS LOST. I EXPECT FORD TO LIVE UP TO ITS NAME AND GET THE PARTS WITHIN A THIRTY DAY PERIOD, SINCE THEY HAVE ALREADY HAVE HAD SEVERAL MONTHS TO HAVE THE PARTS MANUFACTURED AND SENT OUT TO ITS DEALERSHIPS. OUR LIVES AND THOSE THAT ARE ON THE ROAD WITH US ARE AT STAKE. *TR
