2013 Volvo S80 problems
The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.
The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.
The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.
The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

Common 2013 Volvo S80 problems
The 2013 Volvo S80 has been reported to have several common problems, including premature light bulb wear, engine stalling, fuel odor, fuel pipe crack, squeaking or knocking sound from the front of the car, car pulling to one side, steering wheel module (SWM) failure, ABS control module failure, and unusual smells inside the car.
One of the most common problems with the 2013 Volvo S80 is premature light bulb wear. This issue affects both the front and rear lights, causing them to stop turning on. While there is no real fix for this problem, owners can replace the light bulbs with more long-lasting alternatives available in the BreakerYard store. It is also recommended to avoid touching the bulbs with fingers when fitting them.
Another significant problem with the 2013 Volvo S80 is engine stalling and fuel odor. This issue is caused by the fuel hose's rapid wear, leading to a fuel pipe crack. The best solution is to replace the fuel pipe, which is easily available on the BreakerYard parts page for the S80. In some cases, Volvo may do this repair for free if the owner requests it.
The front control arms of the 2013 Volvo S80 are also prone to premature wear, causing a squeaking or knocking sound from the front of the car. This issue can also cause the car to pull to one side when driving on a straight road. To fix this problem, owners can replace the front control arm bushings with new ones available on the BreakerYard parts page. If the car is pulling to one side, a full realignment overhaul may be necessary.
The steering wheel module (SWM) of the 2013 Volvo S80 is prone to failure, causing the turn signals, horn, audio buttons, and cruise control to stop working. The SWM is very temperamental and prone to complete failure. To fix this problem, owners can replace the module with a new one available on the BreakerYard parts list for the S80. This is a technical job, but there are many guides available online to help with the process.
The ABS control module is also prone to failure in the first generation of the 2013 Volvo S80, resulting in the ABS warning light appearing on the dashboard. To fix this problem, owners can replace the ABS control module with a new one.
An unusual smell inside the car when the engine is running is a problem that even Volvo does not fully understand. This issue has led to a massive recall affecting about 70,000 UK cars. If the engine misfires and the check engine light is on, it may indicate this problem. It is essential to take the S80 to a Volvo dealer to address this issue, as it may eventually lead to a massive engine fire.
Transmission failures have been reported in earlier models of the 2013 Volvo S80, leading to erratic shifting and, in extreme cases, transmission failure. This issue is particularly prevalent in earlier models, and owners should be aware of it when purchasing a used S80.
The 2013 Volvo S80's automatic gearboxes are not very refined, especially in early production models from the late 2000s. It is always a good idea to flush them out and redo the transmission oil to stay ahead of problems. The four-cylinder diesel engine, branded the e Drive, has problems with the regeneration of the particle filter and troubles with a rising oil filter that causes problems with the catalytic converter. It is important to sometimes, especially when the engine is warm, floor it to blast away any buildup in the engine
The 5-cylinder petrol engine has the potential problem with the oil filter housing. If a whistling sound is heard, it is essential to replace the oil filter house to eliminate the problem

2013 Volvo S80 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2013 Volvo S80.
- Manufacturer: Volvo Car USA LLC
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT
- Summary: Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2008-2016 V70 and XC70, 2007-2016 S80, 2011-2018 S60 and V60, 2016-2018 S60 Cross Country, 2014-2020 S60L, 2009-2015 S80L, 2009-2016 XC60 and 2015-2018 V60 Cross Country vehicles. The flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue over time, causing the seat belt to not secure the occupant in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: An unsecured occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat belt anchor cable for both front seats. The recall began December 10, 2020. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R10029.
- Manufacturer: Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC
- Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
- Summary: Volvo is recalling certain model year 2013 S80 and XC70 vehicles. A software error within the Central Electronic Module (CEM) will result in the "TPMS Service Required" message appearing after approximately 15 minutes of accumulated driving over 25 mph. The error will prevent the Tire Pressure Monitoring System from warning the driver that a tire needs air. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring System."
- Consequence: A malfunctioning TPMS cannot warn a driver that a tire is underinflated. Underinflated tires can result in tire overloading and overheating, which could lead to a blowout and possible crash.
- Remedy: Volvo will notify owners and dealers will reprogram the vehicle's TPMS. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall began on October 12, 2012. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.
- Manufacturer: VOLVO CARS OF N.A. LLC.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM/PCM/TECM)
- Summary: VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011-2013 S80 VEHICLES. A SOFTWARE ERROR MAY PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION FROM DOWNSHIFTING SUCH AS SHIFTING FROM FIFTH TO FOURTH GEAR WHEN COASTING.
- Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN DECREASED ENGINE RPMS AND POSSIBLE ENGINE STALL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: VOLVO WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE TO THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 10, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLVO CARS AT 1-800-458-1552.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's great to know that it has been such a reliable machine for you and your family. With 87,500 miles on the clock and still going strong after almost 14 years, it's clear that this car has been well taken care of. Here's to many more years of happy motoring!

Hi there! I noticed that my black Volvo S80 has about 4500 miles on it. This is actually my second Volvo - I traded in my 03 S60 for this one. So far, I'm really happy with it! The build quality and materials are much improved compared to the S60. The only thing I've noticed is that the engine noise can be a bit intrusive at cruising speeds, which is surprising for a car that costs this much. I test drove Audi, Volkswagen, and Lexus, but ultimately chose Volvo because of the price. Overall, I'm really happy with my choice!

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you're in the market for a new comfortable luxury sedan. I wanted to share my experience with you. I recently purchased a Volvo S80 and was able to negotiate a total of $10k off the MSRP, which is an incredible value! The car drives very well and the seats are very supportive and comfortable. I was also impressed with the high-quality materials used throughout the car. Additionally, the 5-year 60k warranty, which includes maintenance and wear/tear items, made my decision very easy. If you're considering purchasing a luxury car, I highly encourage you to consider the S80. I'm confident that you'll be thoroughly impressed!

Came from XC90 to S80. It's a classy ride, with a big step across but not down. I love it! I needed a smaller size, good road ride, and more power, and I got it. I highly recommend going for the turbo and upgrade package. It's very nice, and Volvo has really stepped up their game. It's not just your old mom's car anymore. Nice!

The Volvo S80 is such a great car! I have had mine for 10 years and I absolutely love it. It is reliable, sporty, and fun to drive. The interior is made of real leather and wood, and it is roomy enough with seats that fold down for long packages. The only thing to note is that there is a slight hesitation when you step on the gas, but it is something you can get used to. Volvo told me that this model has that issue, even though it is a peppy 6 cylinder.

The car has good performance and a stylish interior and exterior. The seats are very comfortable, and fuel economy is reasonable for this class of car. However, there is an odd quirk where you have to pull twice on the door handle to get the door to open. Despite this, the car has some great tech features, such as adaptive cruise control, which is my personal favorite. Although, it's worth noting that if you come to a complete stop, it disengages after a couple of seconds. The infotainment system, including navigation, has been a bit of a letdown for me. The moving map has few road labels, and the inputs are not intuitive. Unfortunately, there is no touch screen, so the controls can be a bit clunky. Even the menus for settings were hard for the sales reps and service people to figure out. Voice commands are slow and plodding, and the navigation update installed an incorrect database with incorrect information on road accessibility, including major freeway intersections. Navigation updates have to be done with the car running and at a stop, which takes several hours. Additionally, the infotainment system turns off after a few minutes, even though the energy required to listen to music is relatively small. Smart phone connectivity is also unreliable. It's a shame that the infotainment system is so backward, considering how good the rest of the car is.

The leather seats may not be as appealing during the freezing temperatures of January. I realized that my S80 does not have heated seats, which was a detail I overlooked when I purchased the car last August.
