volvo logo

The Volvo 850 is a compact executive car that was produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1991 until 1996. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard, the car was introduced in a saloon body style; an estate style was introduced in 1993.

The Volvo 850 was shown for the first time in June 1991, and the car marked a departure for Volvo, featuring multiple unprecedented features for the company; these included a transverse 5-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, a Delta-link rear axle, a side impact protection system, and a self-adjusting front seat belt mechanism.

The Volvo 850 was succeeded by the Volvo S70 and Volvo V70.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • VIN: YV1LS5720T1
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I OWN A 1996 VOLVO 850 TURBO. RECENTLY THE GAS TANK BEGAN TO LEAK AT THE SEAM ON THE DRIVER SIDE NEXT TO EXHAUST HEAT SHIELD I CALLED VOLVO AND THEY TOLD ME THAT MY FOR MY VIN # THERE IS NO RECALL; ON THE INTERNET THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE SAME VEHICLE GAS STORAGE ISSUES. EXACTLY ON THE SAME SIDE SAME PROBLEM, BUT SINCE MY VIN # DOES NOT COINCIDE WITH THEIR RECALL, I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. I DON'T THINK THAT IT IS FAIR, THAT JUST BECAUSE MY VIN # IS DIFFERENT FROM THE RECALL, NUMBERS, IT STILL HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE MODELS THEY ARE RECALLING. IF THEY ARE RECALLING A CERTAIN MODEL IN THIS CASE THE 850 MODEL FOR SPECIFIC DEFECTS, WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE WHAT VIN # IT IS, IF IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE RECALL. AND A SAFETY ISSUE. IF YOU CAN HELP WITH THIS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT I CAN DO. BECAUSE THE VOLVO AGENT WAS NOT VERY HELPFUL AND RUDE. BOTTOM LINE WAS TO BAD FOR YOU. *TR

STU INSPECTED THE TIRES AND AGREED WITH ME THAT SOMETHING WAS DEFECTIVE WITH THE TWO TIRES IN QUESTION. STU THEN TOLD ME HE WOULD CHECK WITH HIS SUPERVISOR AND GET BACK TO ME. STU THEN CALLED ME AND TOLD ME TO PLACE A CLAIM WITH COOPER TIRES. I WAS ALSO TOLD THEIR PHONE NUMBER WAS AT THEIR WEB SITE. I COULD NOT FIND A NUMBER TO CALL BUT DID FIND AN PLACE TO SUBMIT AN EMAIL. I THEN PLACE A CALL TO STU AND ADVISED HIM OF THE SITUATION. I NEVER MADE A CLAIM ABOUT MILEAGE WEAR. THERE IS APPROXIMATELY 6,000 MILES ON THE TIRES IN QUESTION. THE MUST BE A DEFECT IN THESE TIRES. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM MAVIS TIRE [XXX] HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH ME. THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY CONTACT IN OVER A WEEK SO IT IS TIME OR ME TO ADDRESS THE SITUATION. IF I WAS NOT SO FASTEDIOUS IN CHECKING MY VEHICLE I NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN (OR EXPECTED) THESE TIRES TO FAIL. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-08-05
  • VIN: YV1LW5556T2
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: > MY FAMILY RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM VOLVO CARS OF NORTH AMERICA, VIA US MAIL, DATED FEBRUARY 2005 > NOTICE EXPLAINS THAT: "IN CERTAIN CASES, AFTER PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO EXTREME HEAT, THE FUEL TANK IN MODEL YEAR 1994-1997 VOLVO 850 VEHICLES MAY DEVELOP SEEPAGE AT THE HEAT SHIELD ATTACHMENT. WHEN THIS OCCURS, A FUEL ODOR MAY BE PRESENT." >THIS IS A SERIOUS UNDERSTATEMENT AND, IN MY OPINION BASED ON MY FAMILY'S RECENT EXPERIENCE ON OUR VOLVO 850 LISTED ED IN THE RECALL, BORDERS ON CRIMINAL NEGLECT. > WE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM WITH OUR OWN VOLVO 850 WITHIN THE LAST TWO WEEKS, AND IT WAS MUCH MORE THAN FUEL VAPOR. I WILL EXPLAIN: - A VERY STRONG INTERMITTENT FUEL ODOR BECAME NOTICEABLE, FOLLOWED SEVERAL DAYS LATER BY SEVER LEAKING FROM NEAR THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK DOWN ONTO THE CARS EXHAUST PIPE. I AM REALLY SURPRISED IT HAD NOT CAUGHT FIRE WHILE WE WERE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. - GAS WAS DRIPPING FROM THE TANK AT A RATE OF ONE DROP EVERY TWO TO THREE SECONDS. MY WIFE AND I NOTICED THIS AFTER A QUICK TRIP TO THE GROCERY STORE WHERE WE HAD PARKED ON LEVEL GROUND, ALLOWING THE GAS TO POOL UNDER THE CAR. - WE HAD TO CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO SECURE THE VEHICLE; THEY HAD EM MOVE THE CAR TO A SLOPED GRAVEL AREA TO KEEP THE GAS TO ONE SIDE OF THE TANK AND TO ABSORB THE DRIPPING GAS. > THE DEALER TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY. THE POINT THAT I AM TRYING TO MAKE WITH ALL THIS IS THAT IF THE NOTICE HAD BEEN WORDED MORE STRONGLY AND INDICATING THE POTENTIAL SEVERITY OF THIS PROBLEM, WE WOULD HAVE HAD THE CAR IN A LOT SOONER. I'M JUST GLAD WE DIDN'T HAVE THE CAR PARKED IN A GARAGE ATTACHED TO OUR RESIDENCE. FEEL FREE TO GIVE ME A CALL OR E-MAIL AND I WILL BE GLAD TO FORWARD A COPY OF THIS NOTICE TO YOUR OFFICE FOR REVIEW. EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • VIN: YV1LW554XT2
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: AT 49,706 MILES THE DEALER REPLACED THE AIR CONDITIONER EVAPORATOR UNDER WARRENTY. APPROXIMATELY 32,000 MILES LATER IT HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $800. APPROXIMATELY 36,000 MILES LATER IT NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THE DEALER ESTIMATED THE WORK WOULD COST $800. WE LIVE IN A CLIMATE WHERE THE A.C. IS USED ONLY IN SUMMERS. THE CAR IS SERVICED REGULARLY AT A VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THE CAR IS GARAGED. BOTH THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO MAKE ANY CONCESSIONS SITING THE CURRENT MILEAGE AND THE FACT THAT THE PARTS ARE NO LONGER UNDER WARRENTY. I FEEL THE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO BE DEFECTIVE, WAS NEVER FIXED PROPERLY AND VOLVO SHOULD ACCEPT SOME MONETARY RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE IT RIGHT. AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE REPLACED THREE TIMES IN 125,000 MILES.

Negative 1996 Volvo 850 car reviews

  1. Carleton Kunde 2024-09-19

The air conditioner and emissions sensor have both malfunctioned, each requiring a repair cost of $1500. Additionally, there have been persistent squeaks and rattles, which have proven difficult to locate despite my best efforts. While my experience with dealerships has been less than satisfactory, I have previously owned an Acura and am considering returning to that brand.

  2. Johnpaul Runte 2024-09-03

The 96 850 turbo is a blast to drive with its sporty suspension, 16” low profile tires, and 222 HP performance. However, we have found that it is the most expensive Volvo we have owned (out of 4 others) in terms of upkeep. Compared to our other Volvo, a 92 960 wagon, the 850 requires more maintenance. We have had to replace the transmission (dealer only repair, $2400) at 90k miles and a new air mass sensor unit ($250). Additionally, we have had to refill the A/C several times due to the evaporator leaking, which costs over $1000 to replace. The TRAC and ABS lights are always on and the braking system occasionally freaks out, requiring a new computer module costing over $300. We would appreciate any advice on how to reduce these costs in the future.

  3. Vicente Okuneva 2024-08-16

I really love this car, but unfortunately it has been spending a lot of time in the repair shop. Luckily, I have found a reliable tire shop to take care of my repairs. I have had some bad experiences with the Volvo dealer repair shops, as they tend to overcharge. For example, a shim kit that costs only 10 dollars online, costs 120 dollars at the dealership. Similarly, the rear pads and rotors cost me 600 dollars at the dealership, but only 280 dollars at the tire shop. The brakes have been my major problem, and I have had to deal with a lot of issues. If the check engine light comes on, it's important to check the master hose, as a leak here can create erroneous data on the 02 sensor. Despite all the squeaks, creaks, and rattles, I have grown attached to this car. However, next time I will consider buying a Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura.

The car has only 62000 miles, but unfortunately, the AC repair cost $2200, including $1500 to replace an evaporator that is buried in the dashboard. To access this part, the entire dash must be removed. Additionally, there were some other repairs needed such as ABS sensor for $600, new rotors for $1000, starter relay for $200, motor mounts for $350, rear stabilizer bar for $500, and power antenna for $450. It is important to note that regular maintenance is required every 10,000 miles, which costs around $750. Despite these expenses, the car payments and insurance are still affordable compared to the special payments required for the 1996 Volvo 850 Repair Fund.

We initially purchased this car due to its high safety and reliability ratings. Although I still feel secure in it, we have encountered several issues, starting with minor ones and escalating to a $1,400 A/C repair at 45,000 miles, multiple electrical system malfunctions, and now, at 91,000 miles, we have been informed that a rod in the engine has been thrown. Despite the meticulous maintenance, this is unacceptable. However, we believe that this is an isolated incident and does not reflect the overall quality of Volvo cars.

Thank you for considering our vehicle, which is the only forced induction model that uses reg-87 gas. We are proud to offer a car that runs and drives great, with V-8 power and 4-cylinder gas sipping. And of course, safety is always a top priority for Volvo. We encourage you to buy one now and experience the benefits for yourself. Thank you for your interest!

This car is in great condition with only 118000 miles, which is even better than my 60k mile Ponitac GTP. It's a pleasure to drive, very comfortable, quiet and rattle-free. The interior materials are of good quality and the platinum edition car is fully loaded. The heated leather seats are especially nice on cold mornings. Although it's not the fastest car on the road, the 220hp turbo 5cyl engine keeps it in the above average range. I really like the styling of this car and it even gets some attention from other drivers. It's also reassuring to know that I'm driving one of the safest cars on the road.

Definitely less reliable than previous Toyotas, but certainly not bad. It seems like you've had some issues with replacing brakes and rotors, as well as expensive tires every 35K or so. Additionally, you've had to replace the ignition switch, oxygen sensor, and door stop (due to a torn weld), and recharge the A/C once. Some dash rattles started before 60K miles, but overall the power is adequate without turbo. Fortunately, you haven't experienced any transmission problems yet (106K).

Our Volvo 850R wagon was supposed to be a Home Depot weekend hauler and occasional camping car. But then I discovered the economy/power button! It's amazing! This car really moves. The economy mode allows the transmission to shift at lower rpms and less boost, while the power mode lets this wonderful little engine roar! Turbo boost up, rpms up - right in the power band! If the numbers are correct, this car will beat my Boxster. After feeling the boost, I believe it will walk away from my Boxster up to 80mph. The seats are also very comfortable, the car has nice features and it's definitely fun to drive. The suspension is okay at best. Overall, it's a very impressive little box.

I love this car! I never thought I would even own a Volvo, let alone say I loved one. If you keep them maintained, they will keep on going! With a few modifications, not only will you get better gas mileage (30+ if you can keep your foot out of the turbo), but you'll also be able to blow the doors off of most cars out there.
