1994 Volvo 850 problems
The Volvo 850 is a compact executive car that was produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1991 until 1996. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard, the car was introduced in a saloon body style; an estate style was introduced in 1993.
The Volvo 850 was shown for the first time in June 1991, and the car marked a departure for Volvo, featuring multiple unprecedented features for the company; these included a transverse 5-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, a Delta-link rear axle, a side impact protection system, and a self-adjusting front seat belt mechanism.

Common 1994 Volvo 850 problems
The Volvo 850, produced between 1993 and 1997, has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from transmission problems to electrical faults and engine-related issues.
One of the most common problems with the Volvo 850 is related to the transmission. Early models, specifically those produced in 1993, were known to have transmission problems, particularly with the first and second gears. This issue was caused by a design flaw in the transmission, which led to premature wear and damage to the gears. To solve this problem, owners would need to have their transmission rebuilt or replaced with a newer model.
Another common issue with the Volvo 850 is related to the cooling system. Over time, the radiator and water pump may become worn and begin to leak coolant. This can cause the engine to overheat and potentially lead to more serious engine damage if not addressed promptly. Regular maintenance of the cooling system, including replacing the coolant and checking for leaks, is recommended to prevent this issue.
The Volvo 850 was also known to have issues with its electrical system. This included problems with the battery and alternator, which could lead to a dead battery or the car not starting. Electrical issues could also affect the airbag system, causing warning lights to come on or the airbags to malfunction. Replacing the battery or alternator as needed and addressing any wiring issues can help to prevent these problems.
In addition to these issues, the Volvo 850 was also known to have problems with its Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. The PCV system can become clogged with oil sludge over time, leading to a range of issues including reduced power, increased oil consumption, and excessive engine smoking. To fix this issue, the PCV system can be cleaned or replaced.
The timing belt in the Volvo 850 is a crucial component that helps to keep the engine running smoothly. If the timing belt fails, it can cause serious damage to the engine. To prevent this issue, the timing belt should be replaced every 70,000-90,000 miles depending on the model year.
Some Volvo 850 models with the 2.4-liter engine may experience issues with the oil cooler, which can develop leaks over time. This can lead to low oil pressure and engine damage. To fix this issue, the oil cooler can be replaced.
The engine mounts in the Volvo 850 can become worn over time, leading to excessive engine movement and increased vibration while driving. To fix this issue, the engine mounts can be replaced.
Issues with the fuel system can also occur in the Volvo 850, particularly with the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator. Symptoms may include difficulty starting the engine or stalling while driving. To fix this issue, the faulty component can be replaced.
In conclusion, while the Volvo 850 was a reliable and well-made car, it still had its fair share of issues. By staying on top of regular maintenance and addressing any issues promptly, owners can help to extend the lifespan of their Volvo 850 and ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

- Summary: I HAVE A 1994 VOLVO 850. I HAVE A LEAK WHERE THE HEAT SHIELD IS ATTACHED TO THE GAS TANK. VOLVO IS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT MY VIN DOES NOT SHOW THE RECALL. THE LEAK OF GAS IS 100% FROM THE RECALLED SPOT HEATSHIELD SIDE OF THE GAS TANK. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT COULD BLOW BACK ON THE EXHAUST AND CAUSE A FIRE.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-07-16
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: YV1LS552XR2
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: THE CONSOLE AND STEERING WHEEL WERE WET FROM RAIN. THE SRS DASH WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. ABOUT 5 MILES AFTER THAT, THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. THE BAG WAS THE ORIGINAL BAG. THE SRS LIGHT HAD GONE ON ONCE 20 MONTHS BEFORE WHEN THE CONSOLE GOT WET. THE DEALERSHIP RAN A TEST FOR ABOUT $115 EACH ON BOTH OCCASIONS AND SAID THE CAUSE OF THE SRS LIGHT COMING ON WAS INDETERMINATE. TWENTY MONTHS AGO A TOP, LONGTIME VOLVO DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER ASSURED ME THAT AIR BAGS NEVER GO OFF WITHOUT AN IMPACT. HE SAID THERE HAD NOT BEEN A SINGLE OCCASION OF THAT EVER HAPPENING. I SHOULD HAVE GOOGLED THE TOPIC. I WOULD HAVE SEEN RIGHT AWAY THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. TWO BONES IN MY FOREARM WERE BROKEN AND HEAVY BRUISES THAT ARE STILL VISIBLE 5 WEEKS LATER WERE LEFT ON MY STOMACH AND THIGHS. CORPORATE OFFICES AND THE DEALERSHIP SAY THE BAG WAS OUT OF WARRANTY; A REPLACEMENT STEERING WHEEL TO INSTALL A NEW BAG IS NOT AVAILABLE; AND THAT THEY WILL NOT DISCONNECT THE PASSENGER BAG, THOUGH I CONSIDER IT A TIME BOMB. BEFORE WRITING AN EMAIL ATTEMPTING TO PLACE THE BLAME ON ME, ERICA AT "THE EXECUTIVE OFFICES OF VOLVO" LEFT AN APPARENTLY INANE VOICE MAIL THAT I HAVE SAVED FOR NOW SAYING "THIS IS NOT EXACTLY A SPONTANEOUS DEPLOYMENT. WE DO KNOW WHY THE BAG DEPLOYED IN YOUR VEHICLE." I EMAILED BACK THAT HER CLAIM THAT "WE" KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE BAG TO DEPLOY "STRUCK ME AS ODD BECAUSE NO ONE AT THE VOLVO [DEALERSHIP] THIS PAST WEEK SAID THAT THEY KNEW." EVEN AFTER RUNNING A CHECK ON THE SRS SYSTEM, AND CHARGING ME $115 TO DO SO, THEY STILL SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW. IN FACT A FEW WEEKS AGO TWO LONG TIME SERVICE MANAGERS WERE SAYING MY EXPERIENCE WAS UNPRECEDENTED OR IMPOSSIBLE. I SUGGESTED IN ANOTHER EMAIL TO ERICA THAT THE CORPORATION HAD A MORAL OBLIGATION TO INFORM THEIR SERVICE MANAGERS OF DOCUMENTED CASES OF SPONTANEOUS DEPLOYMENT. *TR

USE OF THE VEHICLE KEY, DOOR LOCKS OR DOOR HANDLES ARE INEFFECTIVE AT ALLOWING AN AFFECTED DOOR TO BE OPENED, EVEN THOUGH UNAFFECTED DOORS WILL CONTINUE TO UNLOCK, LOCK, CLOSE AND OPEN NORMALLY. THE ISSUE OCCURRED ON MY VEHICLE ON BOTH REAR DOORS, ALTHOUGH AT DIFFERENT TIMES. OCCUPANTS CAN BECOME ENTRAPPED INSIDE THE VEHICLE, MAKING TIMELY EGRESS IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY IMPOSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY FOR ELDERLY, DISABLED OR INFANT PASSENGERS, WHO MAY HAVE TO CLIMB OR BE PULLED OVER SEATBACKS IN ORDER TO EXIT VIA A DOOR THAT IS STILL OPERATIONAL. I've owned this used 850 for 2 and a half years now. I bought it used and it has been an absolute trooper with my driving, covering over 28,000 miles per year. It's a great car!
-
It's great fun to drive! Although it may be a bit rougher after a few miles and not as quiet on the road, it still offers excellent performance with the turbo. Plus, it's very reliable. Just keep in mind that normal maintenance can get a bit pricey at 60,000 and 70,000 intervals, with fluids, drive belts, and plugs needing to be replaced for about $350-450 each time. Also, the light bulbs on the dash sometimes go out, but they're easy to replace for around $90. On the bright side, the braking is excellent, the styling is great, and the sound system is very good.

I'm thrilled to share that I finally found the perfect second car for my doctor's appointments and occasional trips to the mall - my 1994 Volvo GLT! After test driving and passing on every maker's so-called premium/luxury model, I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent outward appearance of this car. Not only is it quiet and rattle-free, but it also has smooth acceleration and terrific handling. As someone with disabilities, seating was my top priority, and the 8-way power seat with memory and thick padding was both supportive and comfortable. After more than 42 years of driving, I can confidently say that I have never been more pleased with a car. I can't help but wonder if the new Volvos are designed and made as well as this one!

Hello! I've owned many Japanese and American cars in the past (including Acura, Nissan, Dodges, Ford, and Chevy), but this is my first European car. I plan on keeping it for as long as possible because it has been incredibly reliable. I was initially worried that it wouldn't be as dependable as my Acura or Nissan, but it has exceeded my expectations. I take great care of my cars and made sure to find one with all maintenance records before purchasing. The only non-routine maintenance I've had to do was replace the 02 sensors at 75k and the turbo hose. Thank you for reading!

From the heated front seats to the moonroof, it's clear that this car has all the bells and whistles. It's amazing that even after all these years, it still has a lot of pep! While there have been some repairs needed, it's great to hear that they were mostly minor. It's impressive that the car has lasted so long without burning oil, and any minor oil leaks were inexpensively repaired. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

The placement of the mirror controls on the center console could be improved. When my wife puts her purse on the console, it activates the mirrors. However, the car does have some great safety features, such as anti-collision lights. While the fog lights may not improve driving vision, they do add a nice touch to the car's aesthetics. Unfortunately, there have been some issues with the gear box on three occasions, and the window wind deflectors and body side moldings fell off after two years. Additionally, the cheap plastic hood latch broke within a year. It's worth noting that the wide door post creates a significant blind spot when looking over your shoulder. Lastly, the power seat broke at the 5-year mark and required a new cable. Overall, my experience with this Volvo has been mixed, and I may consider other options in the future.

If you have extra funds to allocate towards maintenance, then this car could be a good fit for you. It's worth noting that the brake design only allows for two cuts on the rotors, so anticipate an $800 brake job every 60K miles. Additionally, adhering to scheduled maintenance every 10K miles does not guarantee that major problems won't occur. There may be electrical issues that only Volvo can diagnose and repair. Overall, it's a great car, but it's important to be prepared for unexpected repair costs. However, this is a common issue with luxury car brands such as Mercedes and BMW, so it's not entirely unexpected.

Hi there! I noticed that you bought your car in 1995 with only 26,000 miles on it. That's amazing! I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any major problems with it, except for a relay issue. It sounds like the fit and finish of the vehicle is really good, and it hasn't shown any signs of loosening up. Plus, it's a fun car to drive! Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

This car has had multiple issues, including O2 sensor failures, emission failures, power seat failure, and REAR MAIN ENGINE SEAL failure. Unfortunately, there is only one dealer within a 4 hour radius, which has resulted in poor customer service, no loaners, and a lack of concern. While the car may look appealing, it is important to note that it requires a higher level of maintenance than other vehicles. It is important to be aware of these issues before making a purchase.

I bought the car used with just 55k miles, but it still needed some work done. I had to replace 2 CV boots, a radiator, a cam position sensor, and the turn signal indicator light. Unfortunately, the turn signal indicator light was difficult to access, so it cost $85 to replace.
