1992 Ford Bronco problems

ford logo

The Ford Bronco is a model line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Ford. The first SUV model developed by the company, five generations of the Bronco were sold from the 1966 to 1996 model years. A sixth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2021 model year. The nameplate has been used on other Ford SUVs, namely the 1984–1990 Bronco II compact SUV and the 2021 Bronco Sport compact crossover.

Originally developed as a compact off-road vehicle using its own chassis, the Bronco initially competed against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout. For 1978, Ford enlarged the Bronco, making it a short-wheelbase version of the F-Series pickup truck; the full-size Bronco competed against the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger.

Following a decline in demand for large two-door SUVs, Ford discontinued the Bronco after the 1996 model year, replacing it with the four-door Ford Expedition; followed by the larger Ford Excursion. After a 25-year hiatus, the sixth-generation Bronco is now offered as a mid-size two-door SUV for the first time. It is also offered as a full-size four-door SUV with a 16 in (41 cm) longer wheelbase. It competes directly with the Jeep Wrangler as both a two-door and a four-door (hardtop) convertible.

From 1965 to 1996, the Ford Bronco was manufactured by Ford at its Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Michigan, where it also manufactures the sixth-generation version.

Common 1992 Ford Bronco problems

The 1992 Ford Bronco has several common problems that owners have reported, which can be categorized into engine, transmission, and fuel system issues.

  • Oil pressure problems: The 1992 Ford Bronco may experience a drop in oil pressure to zero at idle when the engine is warm. This issue has been traced to faulty oil pressure switches, which can be replaced to resolve the problem.
  • Broken universal joints (UJs): The Ford Bronco's UJs are prone to breaking, especially if the vehicle is used off-road. Replacements are readily available at most parts stores, and the Haynes Bronco manual provides a good guide on how to change them.
  • Ignition problems: There have been reports of the Ford Bronco's engine dying while driving or when reaching an intersection, with the engine then failing to restart. This issue has been traced to the TFI module, with an average repair cost of $5000. However, using a Haynes manual to undertake the repair yourself can save a significant amount of money.
  • Transmission shifting issues: The 1992 Ford Bronco with a 5.8-liter engine and E4OD transmission may experience shifting issues. These problems can be caused by a faulty MLP or wiring issues. In some cases, replacing the pigtail harness and ensuring that the wires are in the correct locations can resolve the issue.
  • Fuel pump priming: The fuel pump in the 1992 Ford Bronco may keep priming if the key is in the run position, even though it is only supposed to prime for about 3 seconds. This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel pump relay or wiring issues. Checking the wiring and replacing the relay can resolve the problem.
  • Fueling problems: The Ford Bronco's 300ci carburetor may rock over time, causing the gasket it sits on to fail and leading to poor fuelling. Replacing the gasket and tightening the nuts to the required torque can resolve this issue.

These common problems with the 1992 Ford Bronco can be resolved with the help of a Haynes Bronco manual, which provides detailed instructions on how to diagnose and repair these issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

Negative 1992 Ford Bronco car reviews

  1. Doris Shanahan 2024-11-14

I got my Bronco last summer and I have had no problems whatsoever! This is the first car I have bought that I have had no issues with. I am very impressed with the tight turning radius and I love taking the top off. I would highly recommend this truck to anyone looking for reliable and fun transportation.

Positive 1992 Ford Bronco car reviews

  1. Gustave Hessel 2024-09-24

    I really like it!

  2. Hobart Runolfsdottir 2024-09-17

You've had this Bronco for about 5 years now and it sounds like it's been a reliable companion. The 5.8L 351 V8 is a powerful engine that can tow anything and beat anything. It's impressive that this truck can handle any terrain, whether it's mud, snow, rocks, or sand, thanks to its four-wheel drive system. Although the gas mileage isn't great, averaging 10-12mpg in the city with the big V8, it's still a great vehicle. Even after 17 years, it's still one of the best-looking cars on the road. It's clear that you have a lot of love for this truck, and it's easy to see why!

  3. Bennett Ratke 2024-08-25

I see that you have two Broncos, a 1992 and a 1996, and you still drive them both every week. It's great to hear that these trucks are so reliable and powerful, and that they can handle any task with ease. It's impressive that both trucks have close to 300,000 miles and the transmissions have been trouble-free. The engines run great and don't burn oil, which is a testament to their quality. I also love that they still look good and are in style, especially with the new leather interior in one of them. The original exterior paint looks new too!

  4. Toy Carroll 2024-06-16

Pushing 14 years old and still blows away all the little SUVs out there. Only the Hummer comes close. FORD better get this back into production.

  5. Rollin Daugherty 2024-02-10

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Bronco. I bought it brand new with only 3 miles on the odometer and I'm still just as happy with it now, even with over 122K miles on it! It may not have all the fancy technology of newer vehicles, but it has proven to be incredibly reliable and capable of handling any task I've thrown at it. Recently, I have noticed some rust-through in the bottom of the tailgate and front bumper, but overall it has been the best vehicle I've ever owned.
