The Volkswagen Jetta (A6) is a compact car, the sixth generation of the Volkswagen Jetta and the successor to the Jetta (A5). Known as the NCS (New Compact Sedan) during its development, it was released in 2010 and was phased out since 2018 to make way for the Jetta (A7). The A6 Jetta is notable for leaving the premium positioning in the compact car segment, a strategy employed by Volkswagen to increase volume in the North American market. It also marked the departure from being a sedan derivative of the Golf, opting for a dedicated bodywork instead.

Overview

The sixth-generation Volkswagen Jetta was announced in the North American market on 16 June 2010. The new model was larger and less expensive to manufacture than the previous generation making the vehicle more competitive against rivals such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra as part of Volkswagen's goal of reaching sales of 800,000 units in the North American market by 2018. The vehicle is produced at Volkswagen's facility in Puebla, Mexico, and was primarily designed by Volkswagen Mexico under the supervision of Volkswagen Germany with 70 percent of the parts were designed and manufactured in Mexico. Although the Jetta no longer shares any body panels with the Golf and has a longer wheelbase, this generation was partly based on the same PQ35 platform.

Volkswagen's target of increasing its North American sales removed the Jetta from the premium compact car market. This forced many cost-cutting measures to be made for the North American models, which included a lower quality trim material for the interior. Leatherette replaced leather as the optional seating upholstery, and leather was still available on Canadian-spec models. Lower end North American models lost the multi-link rear suspension of the previous generation until the 2015 model year. Engines from the A5 Jetta carried over included the 127 kW (170 hp; 177 PS) 2.5 L (five-cylinder) as well as the 104 kW (140 hp; 142 PS) 2.0 TDI (diesel) engine. The SEL Premium model retained the upscale soft-touch interior, as well as the multi-link independent rear suspension found on the GLI. North American models featured red turn signals instead of amber.

In North America, the base model (S in the US, Trendline in Canada) received a 2.0-liter 8-valve four-cylinder engine with 86 kW (115 hp; 117 PS) and 169 N⋅m (125 lbf⋅ft) torque. From model year 2016 onward, American S and SE models, and Canadian models Trendline and Comfortline Jettas would receive a 1.4 liter turbocharged engine that produces 150 hp (150 PS; 110 kW) and 184 lb⋅ft (249 N⋅m) of torque. This engine replaced the 2.0-litre in those markets. The diesel and hybrid versions were both discontinued for 2017, the hybrid for slow sales and the diesel as a result of the dieselgate debacle.

New for 2014, the 2.5 L inline-5 was replaced with the new 1.8 L TSI turbocharged 4 cylinder. Based on the EA888 engine platform, the 1.8 TSI is listed as one of Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2014, producing 127 kW (170 hp; 173 PS) and 249 N⋅m (184 ft⋅lb) of torque, all while achieving an EPA rating of 25 MPG city / 36 MPG highway. Other updates for 2014 include an independent multilink rear suspension as found in European counterparts, and electronic power steering (1.8 TSI models only).

Negative 2014 Volkswagen Jetta hybrid car reviews

  1. Quentin Maggio 2025-02-20

I recently purchased a used 2013 VW Jetta Hybrid with 68k miles on it. The car was in excellent condition, but unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with it. We have had to replace the cooling fans, water pump, and fuel pump, resulting in $3500 in repairs in just 5 months of ownership. It's disappointing to have these problems with a car that has less than 80,000 miles. I believe the quality of VW's part supplier needs improvement. I am planning to trade this car as soon as possible to avoid any further repair bills. This experience has left me with a negative impression of VW, and I am unlikely to consider purchasing another car from them. When I asked the service advisor at the VW dealership about the issues we were experiencing, she advised me that if it was her car, she would get rid of it. This comment speaks volumes about the situation.

I bought my car in 2013 and I absolutely love VW's! I thought the hybrid would be a great economical car, but unfortunately, it has been nothing but trouble. In the second year, it needed a new engine and in the third year, a transmission. Thankfully, I got the extended warranty, but unfortunately, a rental is not covered. The first time I got a loaner, but this time I needed to get a rental. I'm curious if any other owners have had the same issues or if mine is just a fluke?

  3. Hank Trantow 2025-01-18

My wife and I really enjoyed these cars, so we decided to purchase two of the SEL models. They both drove very well for a couple of years with excellent mileage. However, when each of them got close to 100,000 miles, the hybrid transmission failed on both of them. Unfortunately, no local mechanic would work on the complex transmission, and the dealership quoted $7,000 to replace it. It seems like there might be an issue with the design.

  4. Lowell Stroman 2025-01-13

The car was great until the main battery failed just 4500 miles after the warranty expired. Unfortunately, the cost to fix it is $7K, which is the same as the value of the car when it's working. If you're considering buying a hybrid, be cautious. Although they're no longer in production, which was a smart move on the manufacturer's part, I'm now stuck with a beautiful car in my driveway that I can't start without spending at least $7K. Do you have any recommendations for a new car?

  5. Crawford Boehm 2024-10-12

In 2013, VW attempted to create a hybrid with this car, but quickly realized it wasn't their strong suit. Unfortunately, parts for this car can take months to arrive since they are not readily available. Additionally, repairs can be costly as only master mechanics are able to diagnose and fix the issues.

Positive 2014 Volkswagen Jetta hybrid car reviews

  1. Amos Schmitt 2025-02-09

I've been driving my 2013 Hybrid Jetta for a year now and I wanted to share my experience. While I really like the car, I did have some quality issues that required major dealer service. The AC didn't work at all and it took 3 days in the dealership to re-program. The climate sync and off didn't work either and the climate module had to be replaced. I had to return to the dealer to have the AC turned on again after the climate control module was replaced. Recently, a vacuum pump failed and the check hybrid and check engine lights went on. Despite these issues, I've been averaging 42.7 mpg, although lately it's down to 37.5. I think the change is due to my reduced efforts at driving economically. It's now 2016 and I've driven the hybrid Jetta for 47k. It's a great high-speed, highway car that handles corners well too. I rent cars regularly and I haven't found any mid-size cars that drive as well or have the same level of finish. So far, it's been very good now that the initial quality issues are behind me. Fast forward to late 2017 and I've put 75,000 miles on the car. It's been a reliable car, although the rotors have rusted and the transmission is leaking - both of which were pointed out by the dealer. I'll have them fixed at the next service. The only drivability complaint is a lurch/delay when the car is cold and it transitions from electric to gas at about 15-20mph. It's truly a cool weather condition that disappears when the car is fully warmed up. Unfortunately, the car didn't have a happy ending. In the spring of 2018, during routine 70,000 mile maintenance, a leak in the transmission was reported to me with the ultimate recommendation that I replace the transmission for approximately $6000. I did replace the transmission with some financial aid from VW for about $3300 out of pocket, but promptly traded in the car for a deeply discounted 2017 Passat SEL. If I had waited a few weeks, I would have received an additional $4000 trade-in value for the Jetta - I received a trade-in offer in the mail after complaining to the regional customer service rep.As it was, you received about $6000 in trade towards the Passat.

  2. Kurt Senger 2024-11-27

This car drives like a sportier car than it looks. It is very comfortable. The gas engine has great pickup, and after getting used to the hybrid, the gas mileage is fantastic. The styling is less than eye-catching. In all, I love this car.

  3. Isac Sporer 2024-10-23

Maintenance issue: I had to replace the vacuum pump and relay, but don't worry, it's a known problem according to the VW technician. The car gets great MPG at 39.7, although the winter mileage is a bit lower, which is totally normal. The car has only needed regular oil changes, and the first three were even covered by the dealership/warranty. Overall, it's a really fun car to drive!

  4. Kristofer Lesch 2024-09-09

UPDATE, 06/2019: Hi there! I'm now the primary driver of this car since my wife didn't feel safe driving it on the freeway. But let me tell you, I absolutely LOVE the pep and performance you get from the TURBO! Unlike my wife, I find this car very nimble and quick, which makes it so much fun to drive. We had to replace the transmission last year, but thankfully it was covered under factory warranty. Our Jetta Hybrid will be a year old next month and we have no regrets in buying it. Even our 16-year-old daughter is excited to drive it when she starts driving! Speaking of which, we're hoping it holds up well so she can take it to college. Fingers crossed! :)

  5. Lionel McGlynn 2024-09-05

The premium model I have may not have xenon fender or camera, but it's still quite nice. If you drive between 60-65, you can get up to 45 mpg. Even in traffic, where you can't accelerate too much, you'll still get around 40 mpg. I love how this car handles, accelerates, and has a comfortable drive. VW did an excellent job with this car. It also has a quiet ride, which is a bonus. While some may argue that diesel gives you more bang for your buck, it's important to note that diesel is not as good for the environment as unleaded, even
