2022 Kia Telluride problems
The Kia Telluride is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2019. Positioned above the smaller Sorento, the Telluride was previewed as a concept car in 2016, with the production model debuting in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. It shares components and specifications with its sister model, the Hyundai Palisade, including its engine, transmission, and wheelbase. Named after the town of Telluride, Colorado, the Telluride is the largest vehicle Kia has manufactured in the United States.
Overview
The production version of the Telluride was launched at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January. Previously, the Telluride was displayed as a customized version inspired by fashion designer Brandon Maxwell's Texas-inspired collection, at New York Fashion Week in September 2018. The overall design is similar to the 2016 concept except for the front end which was completely redesigned.
The Telluride is the first Kia designed specifically for the US market, with the design work handled at the Kia Design Center in Irvine, California. The production version Telluride is powered by a 3.8-liter Lambda II V6 Atkinson cycle gasoline engine rated at 291 hp (295 PS; 217 kW) and 355 N⋅m (36.2 kg⋅m; 262 lb⋅ft), paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive.
The Telluride features four drive modes – Smart, Eco, Sport and Comfort. Snow and AWD Lock modes are also available for specific driving conditions, and the on-demand electro-hydraulic AWD system with multi-plate clutch plate constantly redistributes power to both axles. In Eco and Smart modes, power is completely routed to the front wheels, whereas Sport mode splits the power down to 65 percent front, 35 percent rear.
The standard towing rate for this SUV is rated at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg), and it also features the optional self-levelling rear suspension where the ride height is automatically calibrated depending on vehicle load to optimise control and stability.
The Telluride is not marketed in South Korea as it is only produced in the United States, whereas its Hyundai counterpart, the Korean-built Palisade is marketed there instead. Exports from the West Point, Georgia plant to the Middle East started in February 2019. Kia limited exports of the Telluride to around 3,000 units annually.

Common 2022 Kia Telluride problems
The 2022 Kia Telluride has been a popular choice for many car buyers, but like any other vehicle, it is not without its issues. Some of the most common problems reported by owners include transmission issues, potential fire risk from a tow hitch, and problems with the windshield
Transmission issues have been a common complaint among 2022 Kia Telluride owners. Some owners have reported that the transmission needs replacement prematurely or malfunctions while parked. However, there doesn't seem to be any recall addressing this issue.
Another significant problem reported by owners is the potential fire risk from a tow hitch. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for over 30,000 vehicles due to the potential risk of a tow hitch harness fire while parked or driving. The recall affects vehicles with the four-pin tow hitch harness installed, where debris and moisture could lead to an electric short. Kia advises drivers to park outside and away from structures until the recall is remedied.
Windshield problems have also been a common complaint among 2022 Kia Telluride owners. Some owners have reported that the windshield breaks easily, requiring repair or replacement within months of purchasing the vehicle. However, Kia has not issued a recall to address this issue, and it remains unresolved.
In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the instrument cluster, where the screen goes black and loses power without warning. Kia has issued a recall to address this issue, affecting 5,143 Telluride 2022 models
Overall, while the 2022 Kia Telluride has received positive reviews for its safety features and technology, it is not without its issues. Transmission problems, potential fire risk from a tow hitch, windshield problems, and instrument cluster issues have been reported by some owners. It is essential to research potential issues and read reviews from other owners before deciding on a new car, truck, or sport utility vehicle.
Does the 2022 Kia Telluride have engine problems?
Similar to reports filed for the 2020 and 2021 Kia Telluride, the 2022 model is also experiencing a ticking noise coming from the engine. Unfortunately, the exact cause of this ticking sound isn't all that clear given it doesn't happen all the time and generally happens after a cold start.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
- VIN: 5XYP3DHC5NG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Sunroof is stuck in an open position unable to be closed. Upon attempting to open the sunroof, the deflector snapped off the assembly and the sunroof track broke. Took car to dealership (Raceway Kia, 4044 US-9, Freehold, NJ 07728) for service. Dealership indicated the sunroof is beyond repair and requires installation of an entirely brand new sunroof assembly at a cost of $5730 because it occurred outside the warranty (warranty expired at 60,000 miles and the car had 70,463 miles when sunroof broke). They were unable to manually close the sunroof as a temporary solution. Therefore, the sunroof remains open due to the broken track and is covered with plastic to avoid the elements. There were no prior symptoms indicating that the sunroof would break in this way. In fact, in three years of ownership, the sunroof was rarely used and only opened a handful of times before breaking. At this time of this writing, the sunroof is available for inspection while I look for more economical means of repair versus the dealership's plan to replace the entire assembly.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
- VIN: 5XYP5DHC3NG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: The sunroof broke while being opened which required immediate repair since it was propped open. The only fix according to the dealer was to replace the entire unit which cost more than $5k with parts and labor
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- VIN: 5XYP6DHC9NG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The sunroof glass of the Kia Telluride EXPLODED while driving on the freeway. It sounded like a gun fired off inside the vehicle. NOTHING hit the glass to cause this to happen.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- VIN: 5XYP5DHCXNG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Received a software "fix" that engages my parking brake every time I turn off the engine. I don't want the parking brake engaged each time I stop - the potential for freezing in place due to cold or rust is too much. Not even sure what this "fix" was supposed to resolve.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 5XYP34HC2NG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The sunroof in my 2022 Kia Telluride will not slide backwards to be completely open. It will slide about an inch then stop. Yesterday I took it to the local Kia dealership who tried to clean the tracks. They told me that didn’t work and that I would need to bring it back, leave it all day and pay close to $400 JUST to find the problem. Today I was taking a look again myself and noticed the deflector is broken. The cheap plastic has just broken right off and the piece is laying there lifeless. Because I travel for work, I am no longer under warranty. An estimate just for parts to fix everything is close to $4000! Without labor!! And, I did all of that research in 10 minutes which would have cost me $400 and a whole day without my car if I had done as they wanted. This is outrageous. My car is TWO years old and already things are breaking. I see in forums that this is NOT a new issue. Why isn’t Kia doing something about this? People don’t have thousands of dollars to just throw around when we already pay an arm and a leg for the car anyway! I am now stuck with a sunroof that doesn’t work properly unless Kia will PUT OUT A RECALL!!!!
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
- VIN: 5XYP6DHC0NG
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Windshield had a small chip and then spidered next day across entire windshield. Dealer said, “So sorry, but can’t help or repair.” The 2020 Telluride had a recall and they fixed my first one after repeated calls.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: 5XYP54HCXNG
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Kia Telluride. The contact stated that while reversing, after releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated to 4 MPH. While driving, after releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle independently accelerated. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who informed the contact that the vehicle was working as designed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 38,300.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
- VIN: 5XYP3DHC3NG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Description of Problem: Component/System: Windshield Failure/Malfunction: The windshield on my 2022 KIA Telluride developed a 6-inch crack that rapidly expanded to approximately 27 inches over the course of one night while the vehicle was parked in my garage. The crack appeared without any visible external impact or cause. Safety Risk: The sudden and significant expansion of the crack compromises the structural integrity of the windshield, posing potential safety risks for the driver and passengers, including impaired visibility and reduced impact protection. Confirmation/Reproduction: While the issue has not yet been confirmed or reproduced by a dealer or independent service center, I have found numerous online complaints from other KIA Telluride owners experiencing similar issues with their windshields cracking without apparent reason or after minor impacts such as small stones. Inspection: The vehicle and component have not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or any other parties at this time. Warning Symptoms: There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the crack’s appearance.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
- VIN: 5XYP54HC3NG
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: A small rock hit my windshield on my way to work but did not initially appear to cause damage. Upon arriving at work I made no notice of any visible cracks or damage. Went in to the office, worked 8 hours, proceeding to get in my Telluride, removed my sunshade and noticed about an 18" to 24" long crack in my winshield running right down the middle. It was mindblowing how bad the crack was after a day that was not extremely hot or cold.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
- VIN: 5XYP34HC1NG
- Components: SEATS

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: 5XYP5DHC3NG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The vigils when turning left or right makes a grumbling sound from the rear or transmission. Took the car to Kia in Huntsville. Al and they keep saying they don’t hear anything. You can clearly hear it. I have video recording. Seem like they don’t want to cover what is broken. It could possibly be the transmission case/ coupler because it’s an AWD. Next I will be filing a law suite.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
- VIN: 5XYP3DHC4NG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The sunroof basically exploded and shattered out of nowhere. We were driving on the freeway with no one else around else when we heard a loud POP like we got hit. It was so loud it woke up the 2 kids and the [XXX]. We heard air coming through the closed sunroof and immediately pulled over and got out of the car. When we looked at it, the glass was shattered. Nothing hit us, there was no one around (had just passed through Pueblo CO head to Albuquerque.) The load pop surprised my spouse that was driving which could have caused an accident. The 2yr old car set was situated in the middle seat which was right under the sunroof. The glass could have gotten into all our eyes or cut us. I called the extended Warranty and it does not cover broken glass. He said he heard of this happening before. I did a quick search online and it seems like it’s happened to many people. The sunroof just exploding for no reason. Will have to go through insurance to get it fixed. I added pictures (I couldn’t really reach to get the whole view) we have duct tape on it now. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
- VIN: 5XYP5DHC6NG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I took the car to the selling dealer for an oil change and two recalls. When i picked the car up I was told requested work was performed. I was also told they updated the radio. I did not request this and It was not mentioned prior to receiving the car. The safety issue; practically all systems connected to "Kia Connect" have changed. This is a major safety issue and distraction. 1. The screen intermittently does not turn on or is slow to respond when the car is started. 2. The touch screen sensitivity has changed. Doesn't always respond to commands requiring several attempts . 3.The entire on-screen radio format layout has changed from horizontal to vertical. 3.The GPS has added unnecessary commands 4. The voice activated phone commands have changed with additional unnecessary commands required to complete a call. The phone Bluetooth system, unknown to me, now switches to my wife's phone when I get out of the car and return, preventing me from making or receiving hands free calls while driving the car, defeating the whole purpose of a hands free system. Having sold car phones in the eighties, and being one of the first to have hands free in my car, I feel I know the systems better than most. Entire Bluetooth voice command and on screen displays have changed. On a recent trip on [XXX] in Chester, Pa there was debris blocking one lane of the three lane road. I attempted to notify PA State Police, When I said "Call Police" it displayed a number of 911 related phone numbers associated with 911 on the right portion of the screen from which I was required to respond to. Prior to this update the system would simply call "911" as programmed by me. Another distraction when attempting to making an emergency call. The car is over two years old with 51,000 miles. Obviously I have become familiar with all the systems in this time. I called "Kia Connect" which representative basically told me that was the change and to live with it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

This is my first time buying a new car and although I had to wait 9 months and it wasn't exactly what I ordered, I'm still thrilled with my purchase! I was able to buy it at MSRP with no additional add ons and the Telluride is an amazing SUV. For us, the EX model at around $45k was the perfect choice. It has heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, and some other nice features, without being fully loaded and having a price hike to match. We really appreciate the roominess and cargo capacity without the massive footprint or price of a full-size SUV. With the Premium package and 2nd row buckets, our kids are very comfortable. Additionally, this SUV has a larger 3rd row seating area for its segment, and an adult can actually sit back there. Since we frequently take long hauls and do a 2,000 mile round trip vacation each summer, I'm looking forward to seeing how the HDA and Adaptive Cruise and etc. all work together to keep us moving in the future.

We recently purchased a 2022 Kia Telluride from a dealership that was 60 miles away from us. I drove it back home and it was an amazing ride! The car was very comfortable and I felt extremely safe throughout the journey. The car handled the curvy roads with ease. We opted for a white exterior with black interior and I must say, I am absolutely thrilled with our purchase. I love our new Kia Telluride!

After driving a Dodge Durango, Dodge Caravan, and Jeep Patriot for the past 19 years, I am really enjoying the quiet and smooth ride of the LX. Although it doesn't offer all the bells and whistles, it has more technology than any of my past vehicles. I am extremely happy with this car so far!

The Kia Telluride fell short of my expectations. Despite being a 2022 model, it lacked many features that are now considered standard in most cars. In fact, my early 2000's car had more features than the Kia. Given its high price point, I was disappointed with my purchase and ended up trading it in after only 6 months.

The 2022 model was unable to defrost the windshield and blades in 22-degree weather with winter mix.

I've driven around 1500 miles in the past 5 weeks and I must admit, I'm feeling a bit of buyer's remorse. The salesman talked me into the Everlasting Silver color, which I'm not a fan of, but I got a good deal on the vehicle. While the tech and safety features are great, the car lacks torque and the steering feels numb. It blends in with all the other grey SUVs in my suburban neighborhood. Looking back, I wish I had saved up for a year or two and bought the Genesis GV80 that I really wanted instead of settling for a down-market product.
