Volkswagen Eos 2012 problems
The Volkswagen Eos is a compact two-door, four passenger convertible manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen from 2006-2016 — noted for its five-section hardtop retractable roof which itself featured an independently operable glass sunroof. VW marketed the body configuration as a CSC (coupe-sunroof-convertible).
Assembled at AutoEuropa in Portugal, the Eos succeeded the Golf Cabriolet. Eos production ended in May 2015, with a limited number of base trim models marketed as 2016 models in the United States.
The model name derived from Eos, the Greek goddess of the dawn.

Common Volkswagen Eos 2012 problems
The Volkswagen Eos, produced from 2006 to 2016, is a sport compact cabriolet coupé with a unique design. However, certain model years have been identified as problematic due to excessive complaints from customers and expert reviewers. Among these, the 2012 Volkswagen Eos is one of the years to avoid due to its high number of issues.
One common problem with the 2012 Volkswagen Eos is the clock spring failure. The clock spring is a crucial component in the vehicle's electrical system, allowing the driver's side airbag to deploy and the steering wheel controls to function. When the clock spring fails, it can cause the airbag to malfunction, and the steering wheel controls may stop working.
Another issue that affects the 2012 Volkswagen Eos is excessive oil consumption. This problem can result in the engine using more oil than it should, leading to increased maintenance costs and potential engine damage if left unchecked.
The defective timing chain is another common issue with the 2012 Volkswagen Eos. The timing chain is responsible for synchronizing the engine's camshafts and crankshaft, ensuring proper engine operation. A defective timing chain can cause the engine to run poorly, misfire, or even stall.
Lastly, the 2012 Volkswagen Eos is affected by recalled Takata airbags. These airbags have been found to deploy with excessive force, potentially causing injury or even death. Volkswagen has issued recalls for these airbags, and it is essential to have them replaced as soon as possible.
In addition to these specific issues, the Volkswagen Eos has several common problems that can affect any model year. These include issues with the convertible top, excessive oil consumption, engine problems, coil failure, and body faults.
When considering purchasing a Volkswagen Eos, it is crucial to be aware of these potential issues, particularly for the 2012 model year. While the Eos offers a unique and stylish design, its reliability and maintenance costs may be higher than other vehicles in its class.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-28
- VIN: WVWBW7AH8CV
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My car goes into a false neutral and shifts out of gear while driving. The "PRNDS" indicator on dash had a blinking "D" alternating with a wrench. I have to come to a complete stop turn the car off and right back on and it goes away for about 5-10 minutes only to reoccur. This started happening when weather became hot, and only occurs after driving for an hour or more. Only when hot outside. I performed transmission fluid service with no resolve. There was no debris in the old fluid to indicate mechanical issues. I also get error code P2711- "unexpected mechanical failure". This has almost caused me to wreck several times putting my life and others at risk until I turn car off and immediatly restart engine which allows normal operation for a few minutes. It doesn't operate normally until car cools down. My engine is not overheating. My transmission fluid, and coolant services are current. NHTSA safety recall 09V333000 addressed this exact same issue on 20 August 2009 but it only covers model years 2009 and 2010. This is still a well known problem for the VW DSG transmission experienced by many others. VW said that they couldn't help me even though it's the same issue because my car is a 2012, and it only covers 2009-2010? I am a Disabled Veteran with a heart condition and can't afford to be on the side of the road in the heat without severe health issues.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-03
- VIN: WVWBW7AH9CV
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The vehicle has 37444 miles on it and the front driver side coil spring was laying broken off partially by the front wheel well when I went to move vehicles around (The vehicle was sitting, not driving when the coil broke, which really is curious). I reported the issue to VW customer care tonight (9/6/22) and they said that it was outside of warranty-Essentially nothing they could do. The complaint number is 05384519, and the rep I spoke with is named Tara. This is not something that should happen with a front coil spring (maybe sagging at 100k+) and seems indicative of bad heat treat. There are other complaints filed with NHTSA regarding this same issue on VWs of the same era. If this had happened while driving, it could’ve caused a catastrophic failure and a pretty significant accident if the tire was hit.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-01
- VIN: WVWFW7AH0CV
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: While my wife was exiting off of I-75 approaching the traffic light to turn left, the sun roof exploded into pieces. Large and small pieces of glass were scattered throughout the car. The approximate speed was 40 MPH. Luckily she was not hurt or got any glass in her eyes. My name is [XXX] (Husband) and cell phone # is [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-14
- Fire: 1
- VIN: wvwbw7ah0cv
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The motor abruptly shut off while driving. Within 20 seconds the inside of the car filled with smoke and shortly thereafter there were visible flames seen through the front grill. Fire spread and fully engulfed the car. Flames extended 20 feet. Fire dept and police responded. The vehicle was a total loss.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-01
- VIN: WVWBW7AH9CV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
- Summary: 00927 - Terminal 30 (Right) 011 - Open Circuit 01516 - Terminal 30; Left 011 - Open Circuit - Intermittent I believe this is a major fire hazard and also will leave you stranded. Based on the codes and physical condition of the issue apparently many other people have had the same problem. http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00927_-_Terminal_30_(Right) The noticeable thing is the A/C turns off and once the car is turned off you will not be able to lock the doors or turn the car back on.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-15
- VIN: WVWBW7AH7CV

- Summary: Broken front coil spring. It is available for inspection Broken spring can dislodge potentially causing a tire rupture and steering issue Also occurred on my other previously owned 2012 VW Eos where both front coil springs broke within 6 mo. of each other. That vehicle had around 60K miles. No No

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-07-01
- VIN: WVWBW7AH2CV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE ON 02/15/2013 IT ONLY HAVE 10,000 MILES ON IT. THEN AS SOON AS IT HIT 68,500 MILES AND WENT OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAD JUST HAD IT SERVICED FOR THE LAST TIME UNDER WARRANTY ON 6/21/2019 AT 67,996 MILES. THE TIMING CHAIN SNAPPED AND BENT ALL THE VALVES. I HAD TO REBUILD THE ENGINE. WHICH COASTED A FORTUNE. I SAW THAT THEIR WERE A BUNCH OF CLASS ACTION SUITES GOING ON AGAINST VOLKSWAGEN FOR SIMILAR ISSUE BUT WAS DEALING WITH A FAMILY CRISIS THAT ENDED POORLY AND WENT INTO A STATE OF DEPRESSION FROM THE DEATH OF MULTIPLE FAMILY MEMBERS BACK TO BACK SO I NEVER FOLLOWED UP ON IT. NOW MY CAR IS AT 80,000 MILES AND SEEMS TO BE EXPERIENCING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AS WELL AS PROBLEMS WITH THE CD PLAYER IT PROGRESSED AND NOW ALL DISK SPACES SAY ERROR AND I CANT PLAY CDS. WHEN I COULD GET IT WORKING IT WAS FINE UNTIL TURNING OFF THE CAR THEN OPENING THE DOOR I HEARD NOISES FROM THE PLAYER WHEN STARTING THE CAR IT SAYS ERROR IN ALL THE DISK SPACES AND HALF THE TIME WONT EVEN LET ME LOAD THE DISK. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THIS CAR IS MY BIGGEST REGRET OF MY LIFE. ITS A NIGHT MARE THERE HAVE BEEN MORE ISSUES BUT THESE ARE THE BIGGEST AND MOST RECENT ISSUES.
AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-13
- VIN: WVWBW7AH9CV
- Components: AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING A 2012 VW EOS, THE ENGINE STUMBLED AND UNLOADED TONS OF SMOKE OUT OF THE REAR OF THE CAR. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND CAUSED A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE FUEL INJECTOR, WHICH HAPPENS TO BE UNDER WARRANTY FOR 120,000 MILES. THE ISSUE I HAVE IS THAT VW WILL NOT PROACTIVELY REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE FUEL INJECTORS, POTENTIALLY CAUSING 3 MORE DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN A FUEL INJECTOR FAILS THERE IS A HIGH PROBABILITY OF A CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILURE DUE TO THE ENGINE MISFIRE. THIS HAPPENED TO ME AND VW WOULD NOT COVER THE FAILURE OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER - WHICH SEEMS UNFAIR, ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF VW'S ISSUE WITH ITS RECENT EMISSION SCANDAL. I HAD 2 INDEPENDENT MECHANICS VERIFY THE IMPACT A FAILED FUEL INJECTOR HAS, YET MY VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP DID NOT AGREE MINE WAS CAUSED BY A FAILED INJECTOR.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-15
- VIN: WVWBW7AH4CV
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL. RECALLED OCTOBER 2018 FOR REPLACING THE AIRBAG UNIT, RECALL COMPLETED. IN NOV. DEC. 2018 RECEIVED PHONE CALLS TELLING US THE WRONG PART HAD BEEN FITTED AND WE SHOULD RETURN TO THE DEALER JOSEPH VW 3813 MONTGOMERY ROAD, CINCINNATI OHIO 45212. RETURNED CAR TO DEALER WHO AFTER 2 1/2 HOURS COULD NOT GET THE WRONG PART OFF. DEALER TO CONTACT VW FOR INSTRUCTIONS. CAME BACK NEXT DAY TO COLLECT THE CAR. I FOUND THAT BACK IN OCTOBER A NEW AIR BAG ASSEMBLY HAD BEEN FITTED WHICH WAS THE CORRECT PART. THE WRONG PART WAS INFACT THAT ONLY A NEW IGNITER WAS TO BE FITTED. THE DEALER CLAIMED HE HAD KEPT THE OLD AIRBAG ASSEMBLY, REMOVED THE NEW ASSEMBLY FROM THE VEHICLE AND CHANGED THE IGNITER FROM THE NEW ASSEMBLY TO THE OLD ASSEMBLY AND REINSTALLED THE OLD ASSEMBLY. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE MECHANIC COULD NOT GET THE PART OFF WHICH WAS STUCK TO THE ASSEMBLY. TO REINSTALL THE NEW IGNITER IT NEEDED MODIFICATION WHICH THE MECHANIC UNDERTOOK AND REPLACED WITH AN UNCALIBRATED TORQUE WRENCH. I REFUSED TO SIGN THE ORIGINAL INVOICE AND ONLY SIGNED WHEN I CORRECTED THE WORDING. MY WIFE WHO DRIVES THE CAR IS CONCERNED THAT THIS MIS MATCH OF MODIFIED PARTS IS STILL LESS THAN 100% SAFE AND WILL NOT DRIVE OUR GRANDCHILDREN TO AND FROM SCHOOL. *TR THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THE AIRBAG AT NO CHARGE TO THE CONSUMER. *TR*JS

Volkswagen Eos 2012 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the Volkswagen Eos 2012.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Eos, 2012 Passat, 2012-2016 CC, 2015-2016 e-Golf, 2011-2015 Touareg, 2012-2015 and 2017 Tiguan, and 2011-2016 Golf and 2011-2013 GTI vehicles. Modifications made while the vehicles were in an internal evaluation period may cause the affected vehicles to not comply with all of the applicable regulatory requirements.
- Consequence: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles to make them fully compliant or Volkswagen will repurchase them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 29, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 16, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69Q9. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 16V-078.

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Golf, 2007-2010 Passat sedans and wagon, 2012-2014 Passat sedan and Eos, 2009-2014 CC, 2009-2012 Audi Q5, 2010-2012 S5 Cabriolet and 2010-2012 Audi A5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflators, free of charge. Volkswagen issued an interim notification to owners on April 12, 2016, and will send a second notification when parts are available. Volkswagen will notify owners again once parts are available. Volkswagen owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Audi owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
- Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

I bought this car used and I absolutely love it! It reminds me of my 2000 Mercedes SLK, which I adored. Although it's not quite the same sports car as the SLK, it's perfect for me now that I'm a bit older. One of the great things about this car is the small back seat, which is perfect for my two Scotties. Another advantage is that it's a SULEV, just like the SLK, which means I can drive it as an automatic or shift it for a bit of fun. On the highway, I get an impressive 31-32mpg at 70-75, although it's not quite as efficient on city streets (26-28MPH) and it requires premium gas. Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and fun ride!
-
Your car sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you found the perfect vehicle for your needs. Although there was a minor issue with the top leaking during a car wash, it's great that VW was happy to take care of it. The top going down smoothly and the turbo providing a lot of power for a four-cylinder engine are both impressive features. It's also great to hear that the car performs well at high altitudes. Overall, it sounds like you made an excellent choice with your car!

Reliability is important for cars that are at least a year old. Since I am a single man, I wanted a practical car and a convertible was out of the question. I am a cautious driver, so I did not need a car that corners like a sports car. For me, adequate cornering, acceleration, and stopping power were more than enough. The car is a pleasure to drive. I did notice that the front-wheel-drive has the potential to squeal on hard acceleration when the top is down, which is probably due to a weight distribution issue. There is a significant blind spot on the passenger side, especially with the top up. However, who wants the top up unless you need to use the heated seats? I am going to sit back and read the owner's manual and will let you know more next year.

I recently returned from a trip to my hometown, Chicago, from Daytona Beach, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the EOS performed on the road. Although I initially bought it as a second car, I have grown to love it for its highway manners, excellent fuel mileage, and lack of any squeaks despite having 12 thousand miles on it. Over the course of just over 3 thousand miles of mixed but mostly highway driving, I was able to achieve an impressive 33.7 mpg. There's nothing quite like driving with the top down through the Smokey Mountains early in the morning. Overall, I find the EOS to be a much better car than the 04 Thunderbird I traded in for it, in every way except for appearance.
-
Not a lot of trunk space or rear seats, but it's reasonable for a two-door. The convertible hard top is awesome and so much fun to watch in operation. You'll love how zippy and easy to drive this car is, perfect for adjusting to quick speed for passing, yet smooth and easy to maneuver in city driving. I'm so glad I chose the VW EOS!

Hi there! We've had the car for about 30 of the 36 month lease. Unfortunately, during that time, the car has been in the shop for more than 60 days total (we lost count!). We've had a few issues with major oil leaks, parts failures, and the transmission needed to be repaired twice. The parts had to come all the way from Germany! Despite these challenges, we're still glad we chose to lease and we're looking forward to finding a new car soon.

I was really hoping to find a hard top, four seat convertible within my price range. Unfortunately, my options were limited to this car and the Chrysler 200, which I wasn't interested in. After purchasing the brand new 2012 model, I experienced some leaks. Despite VW's inability to diagnose the issue, I remain hopeful that we can find a solution. It's been a bit frustrating dealing with VW America, but I'm confident we can work together to resolve the issue.

I purchased a 2012 EOS in April 2011. As of December 24th, 2011, the car has only been driven for 3,100 miles and has had 3 water pumps replaced. Thankfully, the car has not broken down yet, but after the car warms up, the water pumps build up pressure and a screeching noise can be heard from under the hood. The first water pump was found by accident when I had only driven 400 miles. I heard the noise when I got out of the car to retrieve something and brought it back to the dealer. They informed me that VW had a batch of defective water pumps and replaced it. I recommend standing outside your EOS and listening for the noise. My car is currently being replaced.

I bought this car for 14,000, but unfortunately, I didn't come close to making that back. It has had some serious coolant issues and struggles with potholes. While it's cute and fun, it may not be the best option for the long term.

I purchased this car two years ago with 36k miles. Although I have encountered some issues, overall it has been a great experience. Some cosmetic issues have arisen, such as the air vent direction pick breaking off on 3/4 vents, my passenger visor falling off and needing replacement, and the upholstery on both door panels coming loose. Additionally, one of my window buttons has broken and the rear seat headrest came off. While these issues are frustrating, I still enjoy driving this car. The pros of this car are that it is fast and zippy, allowing me to easily navigate through traffic. The screen and system are user-friendly, and the Bluetooth connection never fails. The sound system is also impressive for such a petite car. Although it requires frequent maintenance, I still love everything about this car (except for the aforementioned issues). I am grateful for the experience of having a convertible, but I am excited to explore other options once my payments are finished!
