Volkswagen Eos problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Eos is a compact two-door, four passenger convertible manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen from 2006-2016 — noted for its five-section hardtop retractable roof which itself featured an independently operable glass sunroof. VW marketed the body configuration as a CSC (coupe-sunroof-convertible).

Assembled at AutoEuropa in Portugal, the Eos succeeded the Golf Cabriolet. Eos production ended in May 2015, with a limited number of base trim models marketed as 2016 models in the United States.

The model name derived from Eos, the Greek goddess of the dawn.

Common Volkswagen Eos problems

The Volkswagen Eos, a sport compact cabriolet coupé produced between 2006 and 2016, has faced several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues span across various model years, affecting the car's engine, convertible top, electrics, and more.

  • Convertible Top Issues: The convertible top is a key feature of the Volkswagen Eos, but it has also been a source of problems for many owners. The most common issue is the top not operating properly, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty hydraulic systems, broken cables, and other mechanical issues.
  • Electrical Issues: The Volkswagen Eos has also faced issues with its electrics, including problems with the windows, air-conditioning, and dashboard warning lights. These issues can cause the car's systems to stop working, and in some cases, can be related to more serious problems that require immediate attention.
  • Other Issues: Other common problems with the Volkswagen Eos include squeaks and rattles while the roof is up, and the folding mechanism jamming or failing. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, poor maintenance, and design flaws.

In summary, the Volkswagen Eos has faced several common problems that have affected its engine, convertible top, electrics, and other components. These issues have been reported by owners across various model years, with the 2008 model year being the worst in terms of overall complaints. While the Volkswagen Eos is a stylish and engaging drive, its complicated folding roof and other mechanical and electrical issues can make it a costly and problematic car to own and maintain.

Why did VW stop making Eos?

Volkswagen only produced 8,000 units in 2013 globally, and the demand for convertibles in the US went down by 18% in 2014 to just 3,411. One of the main reasons for the demise of the Eos is the switching of consumer preference in Europe from hard top convertibles to soft-top cars in the last few years.

What are the common faults with a VW Eos roof?

The most common VW EOS convertible roof problems are caused by a failed roof motor on the car. The vehicle uses a motor that will open and close the roof and when this starts to fail then the roof will not work. Usually You will first notice that the roof starts to retract slower than normal, or in an uneven manner.

  • VIN: WVWFA71F37V
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My daughter was driving on the freeway to work around 5am when her sunroof burst onto thousands of pieces. She stated "it sound like a massive explosion and scared her causing her to swerve her car." Thank God it was early in the morning, on a weekend, and with minimal traffic on the road. She was able to pull over safely, and call me. We have now been dealing with the insurance company that tells us the glass is covered, but safelite tells us they are unable to repair it. The volkswagen dealership told us their are 2 windows in the US inventory, but not able too locate them. The cost to repair is estimated $2,400. The dealership said this is a very common issue with the sunroofs to burst like this. My daughter's 2007 eos has less than 100,000 miles on it. Insurance won't total it as nothing is wrong to do so, and other than this window there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car. She can not drive it due to the safety risks of her head being exposed id wrecked, and the car at risk of theft. Please if this happens all the time then why are they not held responsible to replace it? It's just like the leaks on the arms of the hard top that volkswagenis definitelyaware of, and does nothing about. Maybe the un recalled seals that leak in the roof have something to do with the well known sunroof issues, and strings that dry rot out from getting wet. We have replaced the whole string kit and both arms with seals to the roof already. The dealership Larry Miller Volkswagen said these should be recalled due to as many as they have replaced over the years. Please help us. My daughter loves her car.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the instrument cluster had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-28
  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: WVWBW7AH8CV
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My car goes into a false neutral and shifts out of gear while driving. The "PRNDS" indicator on dash had a blinking "D" alternating with a wrench. I have to come to a complete stop turn the car off and right back on and it goes away for about 5-10 minutes only to reoccur. This started happening when weather became hot, and only occurs after driving for an hour or more. Only when hot outside. I performed transmission fluid service with no resolve. There was no debris in the old fluid to indicate mechanical issues. I also get error code P2711- "unexpected mechanical failure". This has almost caused me to wreck several times putting my life and others at risk until I turn car off and immediatly restart engine which allows normal operation for a few minutes. It doesn't operate normally until car cools down. My engine is not overheating. My transmission fluid, and coolant services are current. NHTSA safety recall 09V333000 addressed this exact same issue on 20 August 2009 but it only covers model years 2009 and 2010. This is still a well known problem for the VW DSG transmission experienced by many others. VW said that they couldn't help me even though it's the same issue because my car is a 2012, and it only covers 2009-2010? I am a Disabled Veteran with a heart condition and can't afford to be on the side of the road in the heat without severe health issues.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-02
  • VIN: WVWFW8AH9EV
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: We have the Xenon headlights, which requires us to have headlight washers on our cars due to safety issue for the other drivers on the road so they don’t get blinded, who’s is great if 1) they worked most of the time 2) people did not start pulling the fuse or discontinuing the hose so it hit the ground. See Volkswagen has a know issue, that when they pop out to spray the headlights, they are known to break the cover! This in turn leaves the sprayer exposed to the elements to get clogged and not work, owners to get mad because they just break again after replaced (reason why they get disconnected) and the cost is not cheap to replace, the actual part is not bad the problem is, it’s primed grey and you have to get it painted which cost over $100. If you do a quick search over this you will see tons of complaints and the dealership is well aware of the issues, one lady had hers replaced under warranty and they said the sprayer was not in the right place. I could agree with that seeing as my windshield also gets sprayed! There were no warnings, we did not think ours even worked we had the car almost a year the first time they ever worked!! Still not sure what made them work exactly.

  • Summary: 1) The flip up backup camera, yes it is available for inspection. I do have intentions to try and fix it like all the others unless asked to wait. 2) we bought a car with a backup camera for the safety of our 19 year old and others around her after she has crashed her car going fwd, we would hate for her to miss something backwards since she is only 4’10’ 3) yes it has been confirmed by an independent service center, certified by Volkswagen. They confirmed that the wires have broken and a new camera is needed. This is a very common issue. 4) no the component has not been inspected. From reading other ppls comments they do not assist. They have a radio firm up date and they want you to pay for that to fix the glitches. 5) honestly we just purchased the car and when we test drive it the backup sensor showed three dashes, it was turned on to that setting so we have no clue until we tried to change it and had it checked out. But from what I have read this has been going on for years. Not sure when they first started. You can clearly see the red broke off in the black part and while taking the pictures it so fragile another wire broke. It’s not like you can just replace a cable going into the camera like the newer ones.
Volkswagen Eos 2012
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-03
  • Date Complaint: 2022-09-06
  • VIN: WVWBW7AH9CV
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The vehicle has 37444 miles on it and the front driver side coil spring was laying broken off partially by the front wheel well when I went to move vehicles around (The vehicle was sitting, not driving when the coil broke, which really is curious). I reported the issue to VW customer care tonight (9/6/22) and they said that it was outside of warranty-Essentially nothing they could do. The complaint number is 05384519, and the rep I spoke with is named Tara. This is not something that should happen with a front coil spring (maybe sagging at 100k+) and seems indicative of bad heat treat. There are other complaints filed with NHTSA regarding this same issue on VWs of the same era. If this had happened while driving, it could’ve caused a catastrophic failure and a pretty significant accident if the tire was hit.

Latest negative Volkswagen Eos car reviews

  1. Mekhi Robel 2025-07-09

    Vehicle year: 2007

I purchased the car used in April 2016. Although the car looked beautiful on the outside, I was disappointed to find out that the 2.0t engine was not up to my expectations. Despite completing all the usual used car checks, I noticed that the oil level was only at the halfway mark when I checked the dipstick before leaving the seller's home in Maryland. The seller provided the necessary amount to bring it to the top off mark, but on my 250-mile trip back home, I realized that the FSI engines consume a lot of oil. I was disappointed to find out that I got such a great deal from the seller for a reason. However, I would like to warn others to be aware of this issue and to stay clear of these engines. Overall, it's a nice car though! :)

  2. Berta Ankunding 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2011

I am sorry to hear about the trouble you have had with your VW 2009 EOS Komfort. It seems that there is a common issue with the timing chain in many Volkswagen and Audi models manufactured between 2008 and 2013, which can cause severe engine damage and be expensive to fix. It is understandable that you are disappointed and frustrated with this situation. Have you tried contacting Volkswagen/Audi directly to see if they can offer any assistance or explanation? I hope that you are able to find a satisfactory resolution to this issue. Why have so many other vehicles listed above had this problem and nothing has been done about it? Why hasn't a recall been made? If Volkswagen had any integrity, they would listen to their customers. Unfortunately, due to the lack of support from the Baxter Volkswagen LaVista, NE dealership and VW of America, I will no longer be a customer for any Volkswagen.

The 2.0L turbo engine is certainly powerful, but it does consume a fair amount of fuel. While the sports suspension performs great on smooth roads, it can cause some rattling and chassis flexing on uneven terrain. Unfortunately, I did experience a dead battery after two weeks, and although the dealer could not find the cause, they were helpful in resolving the issue. Similarly, the climate control system failed after three weeks, but the dealer was able to fix it within a week once the parts arrived. I did notice some internal condensation, which caused the windows to drip with water, and there was also some water in the spare wheel well due to a faulty welded joint in the body panels behind the left-hand side rear light cluster. However, the dealer has been working hard to fix the water problem, and my Eos should be back on the road soon. Although I did not receive the level of customer service I was hoping for from VW, I am confident that the dealer will continue to provide the support I need.

I leased this car back in August of 2008 and unfortunately, I have had nothing but problems with it and the dealership ever since. Four weeks after I leased the car, a transmission valve had to be replaced. I learned about this problem only after nearly being involved in an accident on the freeway because my car lost all forward momentum. To add insult to injury, the dealership insisted it was my starter that caused this issue. Only after speaking to a mechanic was this issue actually addressed. The dealership had my car for over three weeks and even tried to charge me for the rental car. Approximately a year later, the manufacturer issued a recall for this transmission value issue. I hope this information helps others who may be experiencing similar issues.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2009 EOS. It's been a great car for me, with less than 80K miles and driven gently. I feel safe and comfortable inside this solid little car, and I absolutely love the hard-top convertible. However, I do have some concerns about potential future costs. Occasionally, a piece of the convertible retraction mechanism doesn't work properly, but I've found that a little nudge can fix it. I worry that someday it might fail completely, and I'll have to pay a fortune to replace what is essentially just a wire. Additionally, there have been some strange electronic issues, such as the CD player not working and the windows raising and lowering themselves when the A/C is on. It's quite distracting and not great for the car, as the windows might be in the closed position but the glass will be on the outside, making it more likely for the glass to break if the door is slammed and for water to leak in through the gap. Lastly, there is a known issue with the timing chain or timing chain tensioner, and there is a class action suit that will likely be settled soon. However, I'm worried that my car might fail outside of the window of opportunity to benefit from the suit. Even if I participate and get reimbursement from the suit, I'm concerned that I'll still have a large out-of-pocket expense. Thanks for listening!

I purchased my 2008 Eos from an older couple 3 years ago. Their son had owned it, garaged it, and mostly had it dealer maintained. I have always loved this car since it first came out and I feel lucky to own one as it is super rare to see on the road. Whenever I am out, people ask me about it and compliment me on it daily. Even at 9 years old, it is still a hot little car! Initially, I was hesitant to buy it because of all the bad reliability reviews, but I owned a 1997 VR6 Jetta that I adored and never had any serious issues with it. I sold it at 175k and it was still going strong! So, I know my way around VWs. Most of the complaints I have seen focus on leaks (seal it yearly, buy the epoxy on Amazon) and oil consumption. However, even older Hondas burn oil, and with any older car, you should be checking oil levels every few thousand miles, especially in winter and with aggressive driving. German cars will run like butter if you maintain them properly. Don't wait on repairs and maintenance. I get my Eos oil changed twice a year, and even though the dealer said it wasn't necessary, I like to take it to the dealer so they can do a thorough check on my almost 10-year-old car. So far, all I've had to do is replace the battery (it was original!) and get fresh tires. Not bad in 2 years, and I paid 7k for the car. I even bought a cover before getting it in case it leaked, but there have been no leaks yet! I saw from my car fax that the prior owner had that fixed a while back. Make sure you buy one that has been taken care of. If I buy a used car, I prefer to hear that the owner has done a lot of work, not just that it hasn't needed anything. Any car will need work in 2-3 years, be it brakes, tires, or struts. I wouldn't buy a 2008 Honda that had nothing done either. Ask the owner if a mechanic can look the car over, and if not, run away! Keep tabs on oil and coolant, and check the water pump when you buy it. I keep oil in my trunk, but usually don't need it. The top works perfectly, and people are fascinated when I operate it. I am a big fan of the Eos and I love driving it around NYC!

Year round driving hard top. Sun in your face. Wind in your hair - summer. Cozy, warm, quiet - winter. I had a 2008. Now 2013. Love it. Great on highway or in city. I never knew I could love a car until I owned this one. Only maintenance expense in 6 years. Top goes up/ down in 20 seconds for rain or shopping. Turbo is there when needed. Wind shield cuts down on wind noise. Love this car!!

I just purchased my 2014 Executive and I'm absolutely loving it! As someone who is 5'11, I was initially concerned about leg and head room, but it's actually perfect. The car drives great and I'm even getting better than 30mpg on the highway. In fact, on a recent 200 mile trip with 50/50 top down/top up, I managed to get an impressive 31.5 mpg even while driving over two mountain passes!

I was originally looking for a convertible, but living in WA state where it can get quite cold, I realized a soft top might not be the best choice. After test driving a few other vehicles, I found that the Eos was the best option for my budget. I have absolutely loved every minute of driving my car! It has just the right amount of speed and power to merge smoothly into traffic, and handles exceptionally well. The sunroof is amazing, and the convertible top works like a dream. While the back seat is a bit tight and the trunk can't accommodate golf clubs, these are minor inconveniences compared to the overall driving experience. It's important to be aware of the blind spots, but otherwise, I couldn't be happier with my car!

The 2012 VW Eos is the ultimate choice for a fun and smooth ride. With its updated body style and push button start, this car is a true gem. The Lux upgrades are definitely worth the extra investment, and the new color choices, such as rising blue metallic, are simply stunning. I am confident that I made the right decision in choosing the Eos over used BMW and Mercedes models. I will cherish this car forever and continue to receive compliments on its sleek design.
