Volkswagen Eos 2014 problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Eos is a compact two-door, four passenger convertible manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen from 2006-2016 — noted for its five-section hardtop retractable roof which itself featured an independently operable glass sunroof. VW marketed the body configuration as a CSC (coupe-sunroof-convertible).

Assembled at AutoEuropa in Portugal, the Eos succeeded the Golf Cabriolet. Eos production ended in May 2015, with a limited number of base trim models marketed as 2016 models in the United States.

The model name derived from Eos, the Greek goddess of the dawn.

Common Volkswagen Eos 2014 problems

The Volkswagen Eos, a compact sport convertible produced from 2006 to 2016, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints:

  • Convertible Top Not Operating Properly: This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2008 model year, with an average cost to fix around $2,700 and an average mileage of 40,000 miles.
  • Clock Spring Failure: This problem can lead to the failure of the car's airbags, horn, and steering wheel controls. The clock spring is a critical component that connects the steering wheel to the car's electrical system, and its failure can lead to significant safety concerns.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: This issue affects various model years, with the 2008 model being the worst. Excessive oil consumption can lead to engine damage and the need for costly repairs.
  • Defective Timing Chain: This problem can cause engine damage and may require significant repairs, affecting various model years.
  • Recalled Takata Airbags: This issue affects certain Volkswagen Eos models equipped with defective Takata airbags, which can deploy with excessive force, causing injury or even death.

These issues can lead to significant repair costs and inconvenience for Volkswagen Eos owners. It is crucial to be aware of these common problems and consider them when purchasing a used Volkswagen Eos. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become more serious and costly.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: WVWFW8AH9EV
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: We have the Xenon headlights, which requires us to have headlight washers on our cars due to safety issue for the other drivers on the road so they don’t get blinded, who’s is great if 1) they worked most of the time 2) people did not start pulling the fuse or discontinuing the hose so it hit the ground. See Volkswagen has a know issue, that when they pop out to spray the headlights, they are known to break the cover! This in turn leaves the sprayer exposed to the elements to get clogged and not work, owners to get mad because they just break again after replaced (reason why they get disconnected) and the cost is not cheap to replace, the actual part is not bad the problem is, it’s primed grey and you have to get it painted which cost over $100. If you do a quick search over this you will see tons of complaints and the dealership is well aware of the issues, one lady had hers replaced under warranty and they said the sprayer was not in the right place. I could agree with that seeing as my windshield also gets sprayed! There were no warnings, we did not think ours even worked we had the car almost a year the first time they ever worked!! Still not sure what made them work exactly.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-08
  • VIN: WVWFW8AH9EV
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 1) The flip up backup camera, yes it is available for inspection. I do have intentions to try and fix it like all the others unless asked to wait. 2) we bought a car with a backup camera for the safety of our 19 year old and others around her after she has crashed her car going fwd, we would hate for her to miss something backwards since she is only 4’10’ 3) yes it has been confirmed by an independent service center, certified by Volkswagen. They confirmed that the wires have broken and a new camera is needed. This is a very common issue. 4) no the component has not been inspected. From reading other ppls comments they do not assist. They have a radio firm up date and they want you to pay for that to fix the glitches. 5) honestly we just purchased the car and when we test drive it the backup sensor showed three dashes, it was turned on to that setting so we have no clue until we tried to change it and had it checked out. But from what I have read this has been going on for years. Not sure when they first started. You can clearly see the red broke off in the black part and while taking the pictures it so fragile another wire broke. It’s not like you can just replace a cable going into the camera like the newer ones.

STEERING,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-19
  • VIN: Wvwfw8ah0ev
  • Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The clockspring on the car went out. This mean all steering wheel controls don’t work, but more importantly, the air bags do not work either. We were told by the dealer the clocksprings are on back order and have been since November 2021. There are 8500 already on back order. We were told it could be 6 months to a year before the part is available. Dealership says VW won’t allow them to do loaners, VW says it’s up to the dealership. I’m the meantime, my 24 year old is driving around with no air bags.

AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-15
  • VIN: WVWBW8AH4EV
  • Components: AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Mid December 2021 the airbag light displayed and all functions on steering wheel quit working to include horn, cruise control, and all other buttons that interface with phone, radio and computer. After daughter returned from college 1st week of February 2022 was the first date available and is when the vehicle was seen by Volkswagen of Little Rock. Service Manager [XXX] reported the Clockspring was faulty and this is a manufacturer defect that is covered fully by Volkswagen, however, the Clockspring has been on back order since February and after calling every 2 weeks and calling again yesterday, 17 June 2022, with still no end on sight, I am filing this formal complaint. My college age daughter drives this vehicle with no horn and no driver airbag. As a retired US Army Veteran, I am all too familiar with risk assessment and mitigation and believe my daughter should not have to continue driving an unsafe vehicle. Additionally, we did not pay hard earned money to have a faulty and unreliable car and unsatisfactory driving experience. We either want a vehicle replacement or for Volkswagen to make good on their promise to fix the problem. Respectfully, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

  • Summary: Clock spring failure causing complete disconnect of all steering wheel electrical components as well as disabling the airbag

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-08
  • VIN: WVWBW8AH4EV
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The Clockspring is a recalled item… Took the car in for repair in early February. They (Little Rock Volkswagen) said them and continue to say the part is on back order (and there is over 4000 on back order) and cannot tell me when the part will be in. I called VW corporate and filed a complaint, they said the back order problem is between the dealer and the part manufacturer… On a recalled item? This is unacceptable. The airbag light is on but they tell me my daughter is safe. That there is not an airbag problem… But if there was I guess she just wouldn’t know… VolksWagon needs to own this problem and resolve at the corporate level and get the part replaced or replace my vehicle. Little Rock VW today had the audacity to suggest that I find the part on EBay and find a backyard mechanic to install it as they cannot??? Really? A back yard mechanic??? A part on EBay?? Corporate was no better… Took my complaint and said I’d just have to wait on the part???

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-16
  • VIN: WVWBW8AH4EV
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The clockspring in my 2014 VW Eos failed on January 17, 2022. It was brought into the Alexandria, VA VW dealer who confirmed the problem and that the clockspring was under extended warranty due to known problems on January 19, 2022. However, the part was unavailable and no ETA was available, so I brought the car back home. As of April 19, 2022, Volkswagen continues to have no ETA for this part despite ongoing communication on my part. The vehicle has no working driver's side airbag or horn, which is a safety risk. Vokswagen continues to state that they are awaiting an ETA from their manufacturer. This must be impacting a significant amount of people, as this part is used for a number of Jetta and Eos model years.

  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL I MOVED TO THE SOUTH BEND INDIANA AREA LAST IN THE FALL OF 2017. THE LOCAL DEALER (ABOUT 5 MILES AWAY) IS GURNEY-LEEP. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO HAVE MY AUTOMOBILE SERVICED TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY ISSUE BUT THE DEALER REFUSES TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR ME, REFUSES TO CREATE OR PUT ME ON A CONTACT LIST WHEN THE PART "BECOMES AVAILABLE" AND REFUSES TO ORDER THE PART SO THAT THE ISSUE CAN BE ADDRESSED. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE 2017. THIS YEAR I CALLED ON JAN 10, FEB 12, AND MARCH 7 ONLY TO BE TOLD TO CALL BACK NEXT WEEK. I HAVE CONTACTED VW CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE TWICE BUT THE DEALER STILL WILL NOT PERFORM THE REPAIR. CORPORATE ADVISED ME TO DRIVE APPROXIMATELY 80 MILES NORTH (ABOUT 90 MINUTES) TO HAVE THE REPAIR COMPLETED. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE DEALER IS ONLY PERFORMING THIS SERVICE WHEN OTHER AUTOMOBILES THAT NEED ANOTHER SERVICE ARE BROUGHT INTO THE DEALERSHIP SO THEY CAN MAXIMIZE THE REVENUE. DEALERS LIKE THIS DEFEAT THE ENTIRE RECALL EFFORT.

Negative Volkswagen Eos 2014 car reviews

  1. Sofia Zboncak 2024-09-08

I purchased this car because I was looking for a hardtop convertible with a great interior comfort level and an overall reliable performance. Despite the high ratings that this car received in reviews, I have unfortunately experienced some major issues with it in the 23 months that I have owned it. I have had to take it to the dealership for repairs about 6-7 times, but thankfully, I had purchased it under a CPO warranty. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle, I would strongly recommend buying it with a warranty, as it has had various problems such as the convertible roof leaking, broken bluetooth, a coolant leak, and airbag disconnection issues. I even contacted VW corporate, but unfortunately, they only stated that they would take my comments into consideration. At this point, even the dealership is advising me to either purchase an additional warranty or trade it in. I will most likely be trading it in at the end of the CPO, but I hope that this information helps you make an informed decision.

I was really hoping to find a hard top, four seat convertible within my price range. Unfortunately, my options were limited to this car and the Chrysler 200, which I wasn't interested in. After purchasing the brand new 2012 model, I experienced some leaks. Despite VW's inability to diagnose the issue, I remain hopeful that we can find a solution. It's been a bit frustrating dealing with VW America, but I'm confident we can work together to resolve the issue.

I purchased this car two years ago with 36k miles. Although I have encountered some issues, overall it has been a great experience. Some cosmetic issues have arisen, such as the air vent direction pick breaking off on 3/4 vents, my passenger visor falling off and needing replacement, and the upholstery on both door panels coming loose. Additionally, one of my window buttons has broken and the rear seat headrest came off. While these issues are frustrating, I still enjoy driving this car. The pros of this car are that it is fast and zippy, allowing me to easily navigate through traffic. The screen and system are user-friendly, and the Bluetooth connection never fails. The sound system is also impressive for such a petite car. Although it requires frequent maintenance, I still love everything about this car (except for the aforementioned issues). I am grateful for the experience of having a convertible, but I am excited to explore other options once my payments are finished!

I purchased a 2012 EOS in April 2011. As of December 24th, 2011, the car has only been driven for 3,100 miles and has had 3 water pumps replaced. Thankfully, the car has not broken down yet, but after the car warms up, the water pumps build up pressure and a screeching noise can be heard from under the hood. The first water pump was found by accident when I had only driven 400 miles. I heard the noise when I got out of the car to retrieve something and brought it back to the dealer. They informed me that VW had a batch of defective water pumps and replaced it. I recommend standing outside your EOS and listening for the noise. My car is currently being replaced.

Hi there! We've had the car for about 30 of the 36 month lease. Unfortunately, during that time, the car has been in the shop for more than 60 days total (we lost count!). We've had a few issues with major oil leaks, parts failures, and the transmission needed to be repaired twice. The parts had to come all the way from Germany! Despite these challenges, we're still glad we chose to lease and we're looking forward to finding a new car soon.

I bought this car used and I absolutely love it! It reminds me of my 2000 Mercedes SLK, which I adored. Although it's not quite the same sports car as the SLK, it's perfect for me now that I'm a bit older. One of the great things about this car is the small back seat, which is perfect for my two Scotties. Another advantage is that it's a SULEV, just like the SLK, which means I can drive it as an automatic or shift it for a bit of fun. On the highway, I get an impressive 31-32mpg at 70-75, although it's not quite as efficient on city streets (26-28MPH) and it requires premium gas. Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and fun ride!

Your car sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you found the perfect vehicle for your needs. Although there was a minor issue with the top leaking during a car wash, it's great that VW was happy to take care of it. The top going down smoothly and the turbo providing a lot of power for a four-cylinder engine are both impressive features. It's also great to hear that your car performs well at high altitudes. Overall, it sounds like you made an excellent choice with your car!

I was looking for a convertible and had previously shopped around, but ended up testing other soft tops. After a few months, I was able to get an excellent year-end deal and have now had the car for 8 months and 5K miles without any issues. It's an absolute blast to drive and the size is perfect for my needs. I also appreciate that it's not a very common car on the road. When I was deciding whether to buy it, I had to rely on owner input since I didn't know anyone who had one. I hope that my input can help others who are currently shopping. Overall, I'm very happy with the car and plan to keep it for a long time. Additionally, my insurance company offers a great extended warranty, so I'm covered for 7 years and 100,000 miles.
