Common 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio problems
The Volkswagen Cabrio, produced in 1999, has been reported to have several common problems by owners. These issues span across various areas of the vehicle, including electrical systems, engine, and exterior components.
One of the most frequently reported problems is electrical issues. Owners have reported instances of the brake light and ABS warning light staying on, accompanied by malfunctioning headlights, AC, and wipers. Interestingly, some owners have observed that these issues can be temporarily resolved by turning the car off and on again or by flashing the brights. This suggests that there may be a problem with the electrical system's grounding or a potential draw on the battery.
Another common problem area is the engine. Owners have reported issues such as the engine light staying on and experiencing rough idling and acceleration. These issues can be particularly concerning as they may indicate more serious problems with the engine or its associated components.
The exterior of the 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio has also been reported to have issues. Some owners have reported problems with door molding falling off, suggesting that there may be issues with the car's exterior components' durability or installation.
Additionally, there have been reports of power windows failing, which can be a significant inconvenience for drivers and passengers alike. This issue may be related to the electrical system, as power windows rely on electrical components to function properly.
Overall, the 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio has been reported to have several common problems across various areas of the vehicle. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to more serious concerns that may require significant repairs or replacements. As with any vehicle, it's essential to stay on top of regular maintenance and address any issues as soon as they arise to minimize potential damage and ensure the vehicle's longevity.

I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AND THE GARAGE USED AUTHENTIC VW PARTS FROM A DEALERSHIP DOWN THE ROAD. MY CABIO HAS THE GOLF CHASSIS BUT CALLED THE CABRIO WHICH IS THE CONVERTIBLE VERSION. ALL MY CAR CARE BOOKS ADDRESS THE GOLF VERSION. I AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHY VW WILL NOT REIMBURSE ME FOR THE PARTS AND LABOR FOR THIS SAME REPAIR. Everyone else says that they have no pick up...they must be mistaken! I have the zippiest car around. I actually prefer driving my car to my mom's Jaguar XK8.
-
The Cabrio is a blast to drive, although it could use a bit more power. The German engineering is evident both inside and out, with a level of perfection that is hard to match. If you're in the market for a Cabrio, the new style is definitely the one to go for. SC

This vehicle drives like a dream. It has very little road noise. However, the heated seats tend to heat in spots, which can cause discomfort.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that the VW 99 Cabrio is in excellent condition and drives really well. It has a sleek black exterior and comfortable black leather seats. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to take it for a spin!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. Before buying it, I read many reviews and decided to take the gamble. I bought it with the intention of having it last through the end of undergrad and grad school. I'm happy to say that it was a trooper and lasted! I didn't have much trouble with it at all, except for when I cracked both the front and rear windows (my own fault). Luckily, it was very reasonable to replace them. Although the car doesn't have much power, I still love it. In fact, I even added a roof rack to make it my own little SUV. I'm hoping that VW will release a newer version in the coming years, so that when mine eventually starts to show its age, I can buy a new one!

My first car was a VW, but unfortunately it turned out to be quite a pain. Despite having troubles within the first 3 months of owning it, including top leaks, the issues only got worse. The seals around the top had to be replaced three times, which was very expensive. Additionally, there was a mystery trunk leak that rendered it practically useless, and numerous electronic issues. I even had to spend over $1,000 to get it to pass Oregon emissions after driving it cross-country from Florida to Oregon. Now, the auto top will no longer come down and my mechanic estimates a minimum of $1,000 to fix it. Despite my love for VWs, I have decided to give up and shop for a new car.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with this car. While it hasn't been the best fit for me, I think it could work for others. I've had some trouble with the electronics, but I know that German cars are known for their great driving experience. Unfortunately, I've had to replace some parts, like the gauge cluster, alarm module, window pinch sensor, and cruise control relay. Additionally, the leather wears out a bit faster than I would like. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 99' Cabrio that I purchased back in 2004 from a VW dealership. At the time, I decided to invest in a 2 year warranty for an additional $2,000. Unfortunately, in the past year, I have had a few issues with my car that were not covered by the warranty and ended up costing me over $3,000. It's been a bit frustrating, to say the least. For example, just two weeks after purchasing the car, I had to replace all 4 brakes, pads, etc. The dealership claimed that I must have left the emergency brake on and didn't cover it either time, which was a bit unbelievable. Additionally, my car had two different engine problems and now my passenger side door won't open. Despite these issues, I'm still hopeful that I can find a solution. I'm currently shopping for a Toyota, but I wanted to share my experience with you all. Thanks for listening!

I strongly advise against purchasing any VW products. Despite being driven less than 6,000 miles per year, my 6-year-old car has experienced multiple issues, including the replacement of the convertible top operator twice, air conditioning failure, delamination of the cloth top seams, and occasional malfunctioning of the electric window operators. These persistent issues have led me to conclude that this car is a lemon.
Keeley Murphy 2024-06-05
I replaced two wheel bearings, an axle, strut assembly, and a dry rotted EGR vacuum tube when the car only had 35k miles. Unfortunately, the stereo doesn't sound good and lacks bass. I have had some issues with the dealer service, especially when my second gauge cluster died after 12 months and 1 day from my last replacement. I contacted VW of North America, but they did not take responsibility for the quality of their parts. Despite this, I would recommend considering other options before purchasing this car.
