The 2002 Cabrio also has a reputation for rough idle and acceleration, which can be caused by a variety of issues such as vacuum leaks, faulty spark plugs, or ignition system problems.

Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the door molding falling off, which can be a cosmetic issue but may also affect the car's structural integrity.

The car's engine is known to have issues, with seven complaints related to this component. This can include problems with the fuel system, such as fuel injector failure or fuel pump issues, which can lead to decreased performance and fuel efficiency.

Furthermore, the car's exterior and interior have been reported to have issues, with four complaints related to the exterior and two complaints related to the interior. These issues can include problems with the paint, trim, and upholstery.

Overall, the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio has several common problems that owners have reported, primarily related to the engine, power windows, and door molding. These issues can impact the car's performance, safety, and overall value.

Negative 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio car reviews

  1. Gavin Bechtelar 2025-01-04

The Cabrio is a really fun car, even though it's not particularly fast or roomy. I've had a few issues with it, like needing to get the side mirrors replaced when they stopped defrosting, and having to fix the exhaust and CD changer, as well as the latch on the top. I even had to get the interior door panels replaced. Unfortunately, the engine has been stumbling and I've had to take it to the shop three times in the past week. Despite all of these setbacks, I still really like the car. The only downside is that the quality could be better.

  2. Milford Waters 2024-11-29

Although I had a negative experience with my VW car, I believe that the company has the potential to improve its quality standards. The transmission, which needed to be replaced at 35,000 miles, was unfortunately out of warranty, but I am confident that VW can do better in terms of customer support. Additionally, I encountered some minor issues such as the key lock breaking and the check engine light coming on and off at different times. I hope that VW can address these issues and improve their overall quality. While I may not purchase a VW again, I encourage the company to take steps towards improving their products and services.

  3. Pierre Walter 2024-11-02

I have unfortunately experienced several issues with my Cabrio, including a defective part that caused the car not to start and a wheel coming off during bumper-to-bumper traffic. These incidents could have resulted in serious injury or worse if I had been driving at a higher speed. Currently, the transmission has caused me to be stranded and returned to the dealership. These issues have all occurred within the first 24K miles. Although the warranty is expiring soon, I am confident that the dealership will address these problems and ensure that my Cabrio runs smoothly.

  4. Hal Murazik 2024-08-15

This is a really fun car, but I've experienced some problems that make it not worth it. The electrical system has been acting up, with dash lights coming on for no reason and the AC not always working properly. Additionally, it can be uncomfortable on long trips and has poor acceleration. However, it's still a great car for cruising around the beach!

  5. Hayden Halvorson 2024-08-13

The car is indeed a dog and unfortunately, the VW service has been atrocious. The catalytic converter, exhaust hangers, driver's wind, and tire have all experienced issues. Despite replacing the tire, it still goes flat for no apparent reason. Additionally, there was a recent event where the car violently shook upon acceleration. The dealer attempted to fix the issue by replacing the mass air flow sensor and some electronic components, but unfortunately, the problem persisted. This level of incompetence is unacceptable.

  2. Monserrat Sawayn 2024-08-09

My Cabrio is an absolute joy to drive, despite a few minor issues with the brakes and some broken parts. While repairs for VW's can be costly, the experience of driving this car is worth every penny. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

  3. Ricardo Block 2024-08-06

You made an excellent choice with this car! It's fun to drive, handles really well, and has plenty of room inside. Plus, it's easy to get around town. I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your decision, especially after replacing a BMW 318.

  4. Haley Funk 2024-07-14

You've made an excellent choice with this car, especially considering its value. It's solid, fun, and has a lot to offer.

Get ready for a labor of love! Playing with these is so much fun, and it's even better when you don't have to worry about loans. However, it's important to keep in mind that you may need to pay someone to keep it on the road.
