The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen since 2017. Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.

Overview

Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.

The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

Common 2022 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport problems

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to electrical issues and the emergency brake system.

Electrical Problems:

Several 2022 VW Atlas owners have reported electrical problems, which can range from minor inconveniences to significant safety concerns. One owner reported that all the windows rolled down on their own during the winter, causing potential damage to the interior and raising concerns about theft. Other issues include the infotainment system no longer turning on instantly, delayed touchscreen and sound, and delays in connecting to CarPlay. These electrical issues can significantly impact the driving experience and may require multiple trips to the dealer for repairs.

Emergency Brake Problems:

The 2022 VW Atlas is equipped with a Forward Collision Avoidance Emergency Braking System, which uses sensors onboard to detect an imminent collision and automatically stop the car without the driver's help. This can be a significant safety concern, as the emergency braking system is designed to prevent accidents and protect drivers and passengers.

In addition to these specific issues, the 2022 VW Atlas has also been reported to have several other common problems, including engine stalling caused by a fuel system leak, which increases the chance of fire risk.

These issues can significantly impact the driving experience and may require multiple trips to the dealer for repairs. If you are experiencing any of these problems with your 2022 VW Atlas, it is essential to contact your dealer and seek assistance as soon as possible.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-13
  • VIN: 1V2WE2CA9NC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine has shut off on multiple occasions since we bought it in 2022. It appears to shut off at traffic lights and we are given the indicator message to start car manually. Typically when this happens we have to put the car in park and restart the engine. Just the other day 5/13/24 this happened again while I was sitting at a traffic light and I put the car in park and restarted the engine and as soon as I did it, the car shut off again, it did this 3 times in a row before I was able to get the car moving. We have taken it to the dealer and there are no error codes they can find and they cannot mimic what is happening either. This is a huge safety issue as I am highly afraid one of these times that I will be stopped at a light trying to get my car to start and will get rear-ended or worse.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-05
  • VIN: 1V2JE2CA4NC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: We bought a 2022 black Atlas Volkswagen in April 23, 2022. In December 2023 we noticed persistent braking system issues, loud horrible grinding squeling noises and squeaking brakes at different speeds. It felt like a metallic scraping/grinding sound when in reverse and forward when coming to a stop at low speed. Also random emergency braking approaching traffic light intersections. We brought the car to the dealer Flagship Volkswagen immediately and they gave a us a January 8, 2024 appointment. The mileage in was 17,476 and their diagnostic was crystallized discs. They proceeded and cut the four discs. They charged us $256. On January 24, 2024 we returned to the dealer with exactly the same problem and a mileage of 17, 925. Their diagnostic this time was that the brakes have enough friction surface left and that the unit was working correctly and should be under observation by us.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-05
  • VIN: 1V2LC2CA3NC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I currently am leasing a 2022 Volkswagon Cross Atlas Sport that currently has 26,000 miles on it. In October, I noticed when I press on the brakes of my car, there is a loud grinding and squealing sound both inside and outside of the car. It is so bad, that I tend to not push the brakes all the way down. I brought my car to be serviced to Jack Daniels Volkswagon in Fair Lawn, NJ. They said they checked the brakes and they were in good condition and didn't need to be replaced. I left there and the car continued to squeal and grind when the brakes are pressed. I brought the car back last week to have them checked again and was told that they definitely hear the noise, but the brakes are still fine and they will not repair them. They are telling me there is nothing they can do and that I have to live with the noise and the feeling of the brakes being unsafe. I was upset and dissatisfied with their answer so I tried to call Volkswagon corporate and they told me the same answer, that I have to live with it. The girl at the repair shop told me that other Volkswagon cars are experiencing the same thing but there is no recall yet. She explained that it might be possible to change the rotors and it may correct the noise. All I would like is for someone from Vokswagon to approve the change of my rotors paid for by them to see if that will eliminate the noise or to rectify the situation. I feel unsafe whereas I can't even fully press down on my brakes without the noise and grinding being heard in and out of the car. I can't believe that I was told to live with it by the Volkswagon corporation and that noone would try and fix the manufacturers brake error.

  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Breaks vibrate and squeal when making a slow stop. Dealership stated was just debris, but it continues to do this repeatedly. Online this appears to be a known issue throughout the Volkswagen brand and dealership give the same reasoning, but the problem continues to persistent for all owners who have reported it. The dealerships appear to have been instructed to use the same reasoning for the issues, but never repair/resolve the issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 1V2WC2CA8NC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brakes began squealing and grinding about 6 months ago, I had the car a little over a year and didn’t understand how the pads could be worn. I noticed that when the grinding occurs it is a little slower to stop when braking. I immediately took it to VW, they heard it, checked them and said they were basically brand new. If I wanted to change them it wouldn’t be under warranty. It continued so I took it to Mavis for a second opinion. They told me the pads are like brand new as well but it looked like there was grease all over the pads and they cleaned them up. It didn’t make a noise for about 1 week and then back at it and the grinding and slow braking is happening. This is a concern and I don’t like driving the car because im nervous I won’t be able to brake. I’ve looked online to see if there was anyone else experiencing this and there are tons of threads stating the same thing. How has VW not been required to correct this?

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
  • VIN: 1V2JE2CA4NC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Purchased April 2022, and once the weather got cooler, brakes make a horrendous grinding, squeaky noise, sounds like metal on metal. Have brought into dealership multiple times to no avail until a few months ago, confirmed that it is a known issue, but nothing they can do about it. Said there is a build up of some kind on the brakes that has to warm up before it will go away, which is why it is prominent when weather is cooler. My concern is that typically, grinding, squeaking are usually signs that the brakes make have issues. Dealer is saying brakes or fine, so do I have to wait for brakes to go out, run into something or someone before they can validate that brakes are not safe and are defective?

The car has not been in any accidents. This is the second incident with the coolant system, but the first time its being reported to the dealer. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-24
  • VIN: 1V2HC2CA2NC
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was driving on the highway, when out of nowhere, the emergency brake assist was activated, causing the car to brake out of nowhere and almost causing a multi-vehicle collision. It was during rush hour, so luckily, due to traffic, I was only driving between 20-30mph. The car in front of me was at a safe distance and nothing passed in front that would have been a cause for the emergency brakes to be activated. This is extremely dangerous and could have resulted in a very bad multi-vehicle collision had the car behind me been just slightly closer. This is the second time that this has happened. The first time I was driving down a local street doing approximately 15mph, no rain, no debris in the road, and out of nowhere the emergency brake activated and brought me to a full stop. I’m very concerned now as I am often driving with my toddler in the car and this has now happened twice for no apparent reason.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
  • VIN: 1V2DC2CA7NC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Airbag Error keeps going off and flashing on the dashboard. Airbag sensor keeps chiming like a person is sitting in the front seat without using seatbelt when there is no one in the front seat and without anything on the seat that may weigh enough to set the sensor off. No active recalls are shown for the 2022 Atlas Cross Sport but there appears to be a similar recall with the 2018-2021 models.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-27
  • VIN: 1V2HE2CA7NC
  • Components: ENGINE

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
  • VIN: 1V2JE2CA8NC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I purchased my car in July 2022 and started having issues with it within 3 months. I’ve have my car at the dealer 4 times for them to look at… 1 - the brakes (grinding, scraping noise, squeaking that can be fetl in the pedal). I was told each time that the rotors and brake pads aren’t compatible. VW knows about the problem but doesn’t have a fix for it. They say they clean the pads and that the car is safe to drive (really?). 2 - the infotainment system. On several occasions I cannot switch from one media system (Sirius XM, FM, AM, blue tooth, etc…), when I turn my car on, the screen shows “initializing” but nothing happens. It just sits there. Today was a first; the whole system shut off and the screen was blank. No radio, no phone, nothing. I’ve made several videos to show the dealer what the system is doing and they tell me it just needs an update, yet I still have the problem. 3 - the front assist light comes on but doesn’t engage or when I am stopping it will engage so hard that it nearly stops my car on a dime (if I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt, I would have been on the floorboard). 4 - the remote start doesn’t work, from my fob or the app on my phone. The dealer was able to make it work once and said it was fixed. Hasn’t worked since. I only have 7,900 miles on my car and I just want it permanently fixed.

Negative 2022 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport car reviews

  1. Allan Mayer 2024-10-12

That car has been in the garage many times. Four times for a board in the door that they did not find at first, and then a piston that took two days in the garage. When I was on my way to Florida, I did not receive any reimbursement for expensive hotels/meals. The car runs nicely above 30 miles speed, but below that, shifting is weird. I will never buy a VW again. The service was terrible, but riding it is okay, not great.

  2. Cristina Medhurst 2024-09-19

I purchased a 2022 Cross Sport V6 SEL R-Line in July 2022. Unfortunately, I noticed that the start-stop system was not functioning properly by August. Despite taking it to the dealer multiple times, the issue persisted, and I eventually traded it in for a 2023 Cross Sport R-Line SEL. While I love the look and drive of the car, I have had some issues with it. However, some people may find the car's energy and drive worth the occasional headache. The car dominates the road with its wide body ride and feels very safe, especially during heavy rain in South Florida. Overall, I cannot recommend this car to those looking for reliability or dependability, but if you're willing to pay for the German drive feel, it's a great car.

I leased the 4-cylinder turbo SE with tech package, but unfortunately it does not come with a memory seat option. After less than a year and only about 9000 miles, I noticed that the brakes started making a grinding noise with any level of moisture on the pad. When I brought it to the dealership, they said there was nothing to be done because the pads were still new. The ride quality is also a bit jerky, which can be disturbing when going over any irregular surface. However, the vehicle does provide a safe feeling from inside due to its size and thick sheet metal. The only downside is that I cannot wait to turn it in at the end of the lease. Lastly, I noticed that the passenger side wiper arm angle is wrong, which causes even a brand new wiper blade to stutter when going up. Although the dealership said the angle was fine, I hope they can fix it soon.

I'll skip the 'admiration' part of the vehicle description. We purchased our vehicle brand new from a dealership in Canada and it ran smoothly for the first 5,000 km. However, we've had a few issues since then. The media system has been malfunctioning, the plastic part over the driver's head rattles, the brakes are defective, the outside sensors are malfunctioning, and the outside mirror squeaks. Every time we bring these issues to the dealer's attention, they request that we 'replicate' the issue according to VW requirements, which has resulted in us spending hours in the dealership waiting room. Hopefully, the dealership will improve their service in the future.

I see that you've had quite a few SUVs in the past, including two Acura MDXs, two Honda Pilots, a GMC Acadia, a Dodge Durango, and a Ford Expedition. I'm glad to hear that you think the VW Atlas Cross Sport is the best of them all! It sounds like you're really enjoying the luxury SUV.

  3. Terrill Simonis 2024-10-11

The car handles very smoothly and is super comfortable. I highly recommend it!

  4. Tyrique Parisian 2024-09-22

You'll find the drive to be very comfortable with great road visibility. Although, it would be even better with a heated steering wheel and improved gas mileage.

I absolutely love how agile it is despite its beefy appearance! The only thing I wish it had was memory seats. Other than that, it's perfect! It did take me a little while to get used to its size, but now I wouldn't change a thing. Plus, it shares the same DNA as some amazing cars like the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley SUV, Porsche Cayenne/Macan, and Audi A8. By the way, I always carry around a fold-up ladder and windshield cleaner because I'm too short to reach my glass! :)
