2023 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport problems
The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen since 2017. Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.
Overview
Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.
The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

Common 2023 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport problems
Common Problems with the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport 2023:
- Driver-side Rear Trailing Arm Bolts: The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas FL and 2022-2023 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles have been recalled due to driver-side rear trailing arm bolts that may not have been tightened properly. If the bolts loosen and fall out, the trailing arm may fracture, causing a sudden loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Brake Lines Leak: Certain 2023 model year Atlas FL and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles have been recalled due to brake lines that may leak at the threaded connections. A brake fluid leak may increase the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Door Wiring Harness Corrosion: The 2019-2020 Atlas, 2020-2023 Atlas Cross Sport, and 2021-2023 Atlas FL vehicles have been recalled due to door wiring harness electrical contacts that may corrode. This can disrupt the electrical connection and delay the deployment of the driver or passenger front side air bag during a side impact crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Transmission Problems: Some owners of the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas have reported herky-jerky shifting, which seems to happen in all gears but is mostly noticeable at around 20 mph. The car sometimes shifts hard, and slowing down to stop results in abrupt shifting. This issue has been common with the Atlas, and some owners have reported that it does not happen as badly in Sport mode.
- Engine Sluggishness: Some consumers have reported that the engine is too sluggish, but one owner of the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas with a V6 engine found it to be perfectly adequate and capable of performing all necessary tasks. This owner also mentioned that the car felt solid at 104 mph, although it is slower compared to a Dodge Durango Hellcat.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- VIN: 1V2JE2CA1PC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: MY CAR SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. ALSO I HAVE HAD BRAKE ISSUES. GRINDING NOISE AND LOUD NOISE. THEY RELACED THE BRAKE PADS THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR BECAUSE MANUFACTUR PADS WOULD HAVE CAUSE THE SAME ISSUE. NOW MY CAR IS SHAKING WHILE I BRAKE. THEY SAID I NEED NEW ROTORS. WITH THE CAR SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING IS MY MAIN CONCERN. IT HAS SHUT OFF A TOTAL OF 8 TIME SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT. SHUT OFF RADOMLY ON STREET, PARKING LOTS AND FREEWAY GOING 65MPH. I HAVE MY GRAND CHILDREN IN MY CAR A LOT. SO THERFORE, THIS IS A HIGH RISK SAFETY CONCERN OF MINE.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-30
- VIN: 1V2WE2CA9PC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My car cuts off while driving. For instance, I was at a red light, in the left turning lane, and the light turned green. I pressed the gas and it started going and then just cut off. Luckily there was no car behind me. However, I was halfway in the intersection as cars were coming towards me. I had my 3 year old in the car. This is very dangerous. This is just one incident. When backing out of a parking spot, I will get half way out of the spot and it cuts off. I’ve taken it to the dealership, but they won’t help since they can’t duplicate it. I reached out to Volkswagon on Twitter and all they did was have me take it to the dealership again. I received the same, non-concerned, attitude. Nothing has been done. I bought this car brand new. Also, the screen cuts off randomly and has to restart.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-15
- VIN: 1V2KE2CAXPC
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: When car came to a stop at a red light I put my foot on the gas once the light turned green. When I tried to proceed through the light my car was at a complete stall. I had to then place the car in park, power the car off and then power the car back on. The other car behind me almost ran into the back of my car due to the light was green. When I contacted the dealership the service department they told me it was normal and don’t worry about it. If it happens again then to bring the vehicle in.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-30
- VIN: 1V2FE2CA3PC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle simply shuts off with no warning or reason. I should NOT have to explain to anybody how this is a safety hazard to the driver and others around the vehicle. It shuts down while in a car wash and the vehicle is in Neutral. Thus, I have to brake, place the trans in Park then manually restart. The same happens at Stop Lights. All the time this is happening, the vehicle's "Auto On/Auto Off" mode has been manually disabled. VW KNOWS about this issue, although the dealerships like to play dumb, as it has been going on for several years now with still no solution in sight! Had I known about this issue before purchasing the vehicle I would never have purchased it! I would LOVE it if VW would buy back the vehicle and allow me to look for another SUV from an American car manufacturer.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
- VIN: 1V2FE2CA1PC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: UNKOWN Brakes on brand new vehicle are exhibiting behavior that is not normal for a car of this size and relatively young age (miles). Measurably loud brake noise based on manufactures choice of materials in components leave concern on overall safety of brake system based on generally considered (except by dealer / manufacturer of course) unexpected behavior of vehicle braking system.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-05
- VIN: 1V2FR2CA7PC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: This vehicle when using the Navigation system will suddenly show the vehicle 50 to 100+ miles from its actual location, often in the middle of a field or just offroad! I returned to the dealer who installed the recommended "fix" from a technical service bulletin. The software fix did bring the locations closer when the system failed, and instead of 50 to 100+ miles off course, it shows 5 to 15 miles off course. I did a search online and found [XXX] and there are hundreds of complaints about this issue! I believe this to be a MAJOR safety issue, as you can find yourself suddenly what appears to be off course and in an unknown area. What ever is happening also screws up the maps on your iPhone as it apparently grabs the info from the vehicle and projects it on the CarPlay screen. I have multiple photos of the navigation system showing me off road when in the middle of the interstate! I tried to upload them here but they would not. I listed one date for the incident but this is ONGOING! Happens frequently and without warning. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-04
- VIN: 1V2FE2CA1PC
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The components that failed or malfunctioned was the fuel pump & fuel system components. During the 1st incident, while driving at approx. 50 mph, I quickly lost acceleration, which caused me to slow down very quickly until I had no acceleration power - this took a matter of 10 seconds or less. After losing power, the smell of gas consumed the cabin, & the engine was unable to start, resulting in the vehicle having to be towed. This incident happened at 1,005 miles on a brand new car. I had only owned it about 2 1/2 weeks. This happened 2 more times over the course of the next several weeks, but this time on a busy California freeway. I again had to be towed twice. The 3rd incident had an incredibly strong smell of gasoline vapors that consumed the inside AND outside of the cabin. In total, the vehicle (at 3 months old) had been towed 3 times, had 5 fuel pump replacements; and replacement of the fuel rails, fuel injectors, intake manifold gasket, and more. The Carfax report does not show all repairs performed. My life as well as the lives of my husband & children were put at risk when we nearly stalled out on the CA freeway while beginning our family vacation. I believe the most dangerous part was the gasoline vapors that consumed the inside & immediate vicinity of the vehicle. The dealerships code reader confirmed the issues with the fuel pump. The vehicle was inspected by the dealership. The warning lights that illuminated during the incidents were the EPC & check engine light. They illuminated at the immediate onset of the vehicle losing acceleration. I would like to note that this vehicle was eventually repurchased from VW under lemon law. I had to ask for reconsideration after the first request was denied. However, VW eventually made a horrible situation right and we are relieved this vehicle is off our hands. I do feel like I have an obligation, however, to notify NHTSA of these incidents as it could have had a much more devastating outcome.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-24
- VIN: 1V2KE2CA4PC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: The car will stop suddenly at a red light or when slowing in traffic without warning. I have to stop the car, put in park, and restart the engine often when the light turns green and I'm not moving The ACC eco-feature is typically off/disabled, so it isn't the issue. A few scary times being in traffic at a red light and then the car stops working. Not an engine problem. Earlier versions have had a recall, but not my year. May need to consider extending the recall and fix.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06
- VIN: 1V2JC2CA3PC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving on the freeway, the panoramic sunroof exploded. This time, the vehicle has not been repaired and is available for inspection. The explosion could have been caused by the excessive heat. The sunroof cover was closed at the time, but if it was open, the glass from the sunroof exploding could have injured my daughter who was sitting in the back seat. The glass could have flown and injured other drivers as well. The vehicle has not been expected, but when this issue was researched online, it appears that it has happened on other Volkswagen vehicles, and the dealership service center acknowledged that this has happened to others before. The vehicle is scheduled to be repaired at the Volkswagen dealership. No warning lights or prior messages appeared prior to the sunroof exploding.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-28
- VIN: 1V2FE2CA9PC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Multiple issues since purchasing the vehicle in 01/2023. - First evening in the driveway all of the windows went down. The vehicle was not running. This has happened two other times. - I went out to me vehicle one day and the back tailgate had opened on its own. - One day I went out to the vehicle to put something in the back. Opened the hatch and the vehicle started "bucking" and would not stop. This lasted approximately 5 minutes. - Multiple times the vehicle will make a loud POP sound (sounds like a gunshot) and then I lose all media volume. Sometimes it will come back on if I park the car and restart it, but not always. - There was an incident when the car sounded like someone was changing radio stations. It was very loud and continued even when I turned the radio off. The dealership was able to duplicate this and found an electrical connection that was not secure. - There was another incident when all of the dash lights began to flicker and it sounded as if there was a jackhammer in the car. This continued after I parked the car, turned it off, exited and locked the vehicle (I was able to capture this on video). - Navigation will get lost / stuck. It doesn't matter if I'm using vehicle navigation or an app (GoogleMaps, Apple Maps). Once it is stuck, no system will triangulate, so I'm driving blind. - Even though the vehicle has been at the dealership twice (last time for a month) the issue with the POP and no volume and the Navigation getting lost have been recurrent. - Sometimes Apple Car Play will not connect to the car at all.

Negative 2023 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport car reviews
Positive 2023 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport car reviews

I got the top of the line model and I absolutely love it! The driving experience is so luxurious and reminds me of my usual Audi purchase/lease. The car's design is very thoughtful and even though it's big, it drives small and relatively quick (note that I own the 3.6 V6 and didn't test drive the smaller engine). The other car in our household is an Audi Q5, but I always choose to drive the VW Atlas Cross Sport. While I do agree with other reviews that the fuel consumption is relatively inefficient, it doesn't matter much to me since I don't drive much. I would highly recommend anyone to take this beauty for a spin!

I owned a 2021 Cross Sport SE Premium for 14 months before trading it in. While I loved the Cross Sport and miss it dearly, I believe my particular vehicle had some issues. However, I don't think this is necessarily the case for all Cross Sports. Driving it was a pleasure, as it was comfortable and, in my opinion, the most beautiful car on the road. Unfortunately, I did experience some problems. The first issue was a strut rattle, which the dealership initially couldn't find. After persisting and returning for another visit, they replaced a part of the strut, which fixed the rattle. The second issue was with the crash avoidance system. The first time it engaged, it wasn't necessary, and it almost caused an accident with a motorcycle cop behind me. I turned the system off to avoid any further incidents, but it still engaged twice in a week, causing the brakes to make a grinding noise. Before I could get it to the shop, the car turned itself off at a red light with an error message indicating that the door was open. It took several attempts to get the car in park and started again. Fortunately, I had recently had an oil change with a full point inspection, which proved that I had not been riding the brakes. The service department initially refused to believe that the anti-collision system could cause damage to the rotors, but I fought to get VW to pay for the replacement. The only reason I was able to do so was because of the inspection I had two weeks prior. The electrical issue turned out to be a sensor, and I had to take it back to the shop a few months later because I was still having issues with the door sensor. The most recent time, which was the fourth time, was due to the same door sensor issue.Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that during the replacement of the door sensor, the mechanics found that the wiring harness in the door needed to be replaced as well. It turns out that this was the root cause of the sensor failure. After experiencing this issue four times, I decided it was time to move on. While I do believe that the issues were specific to that particular car, I would have purchased another Cross Sport if they had one available that was equal to or better than mine. On a side note, the gas mileage wasn't great, but I expected that with a V6 engine. Take care!

The vehicle has amazing technology, including an 8.0-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth that works flawlessly. The styling is beautiful, with 20-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights/taillights. It also has adaptive cruise control with automatic braking, parking sensors for both front and back, and lane departure and assist features that are fabulous. Additionally, the vehicle is very spacious. Overall, it's a great vehicle, although it could use a bit more pep.
-
I brought the Cross Sport simply because at 6’8 tall there were no other two row SUV’s I could fit in. The car rides nice and has adequate power for a turbo 4. I love all the technology and it’s pretty easy to learn how everything works. My only complaint is the radio. I think VW should’ve made the Fender audio an option. I love my music and the radio is below average. Other than that, I would highly recommend this car.

Love my Red Cross Sport! Amazing interior, great drive and ride and looks absolutely fabulous!!!

Consider looking elsewhere for a more reliable vehicle at this price point. This car has required a new steering rack, new sway bar links, new AC Schrader valves, 3 air bag modules, and a new transmission after two separate leaks, all in under 10,000 miles. It is worth noting that other owners have reported similar issues.
Jamaal Leuschke 2024-11-09
I leased the 4-cylinder turbo SE with tech package, but unfortunately it does not come with a memory seat option. After less than a year and only about 9000 miles, I noticed that the brakes started making a grinding noise with any level of moisture on the pad. When I brought it to the dealership, they said there was nothing to be done because the pads were still new. The ride quality is also a bit jerky, which can be disturbing when going over any irregular surface. However, the vehicle does provide a safe feeling from inside due to its size and thick sheet metal. The only downside is that I cannot wait to turn it in at the end of the lease. Lastly, I noticed that the passenger side wiper arm angle is wrong, which causes even a brand new wiper blade to stutter when going up. Although the dealership said the angle was fine, I hope they can fix it soon.

I'll skip the 'admiration' part of the vehicle description. We purchased our vehicle brand new from a dealership in Canada and it ran smoothly for the first 5,000 km. However, we've had a few issues since then. The media system has been malfunctioning, the plastic part over the driver's head rattles, the brakes are defective, the outside sensors are malfunctioning, and the outside mirror squeaks. It's frustrating that every time we bring these issues to the dealer's attention, they request that we 'replicate' the issue according to VW requirements. I've already spent hours waiting in the dealership waiting room. Hopefully, they will improve their service in the future.
Ervin Lakin 2024-06-24
The car's performance is commendable, however, the frequency of issues experienced within a short period of time is concerning. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this car for purchase or use.

I purchased a 2022 Cross Sport V6 SEL R-Line in July 2022. Unfortunately, I noticed that the start-stop system was not functioning properly by August. Despite taking it to the dealer multiple times, the issue persisted, and I eventually traded it in for a 2023 Cross Sport R-Line SEL. While I love the look and drive of the car, I have had some issues with it. However, some people may find the car's energy and drive worth the occasional headache. The car dominates the road with its wide body ride and feels very safe, especially during heavy rain in South Florida. Although I cannot recommend this car to those looking for reliability or dependability, it is a great car for those who enjoy the German drive feel and are willing to pay for it. On a side note, the stock sound system could be improved, as my 2011 Camry had a better one. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this car, but it is undeniably smooth and sexy. It is currently under warranty, but I worry about potential future issues.
