The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen since 2017. Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.

Overview

Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.

The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

Common Volkswagen Atlas cross sport problems

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a two-row SUV with a focus on providing space, road presence, and a familiar badge at a competitive price. It has been designed with the unique requirements of North American families in mind, offering plenty of scale at an affordable price. The 2024 Atlas Cross Sport is available from $36,715, which is lower than the average price for a new, non-luxury vehicle in the U.S.

However, the Atlas Cross Sport has been criticized for not being engaging enough from behind the wheel or distinctive enough in its features to eclipse its competitors, such as the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and Mazda CX-90. The new Atlas is good, but it may not be memorable until Volkswagen's fully electric options are available.

One of the most common problems with the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is its reliability. Consumer Reports predicts that the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport will be less reliable than other new cars based on limited data from the Atlas Cross Sport and the Volkswagen brand scores. The reliability data is obtained from a questionnaire sent to subscribers, asking them to note any problems with their cars that occurred in the past 12 months. A typical model has about 200 to 400 samples for each model year.

Another issue with the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a recall campaign for some of its SUVs due to a potentially catastrophic engine problem. Contaminants on engine rod bearings could damage the oiling circuit, leading to wear and damage inside the engine and eventually a catastrophic failure. The recall impacts 1,323 Atlas SUVs and 695 Atlas Cross Sports built between June 16 and July 25 of this year. Volkswagen expects only about 2% of those 2,018 vehicles will have a problem. However, considering the engines can completely fail, resulting in less of oil containment and even a fire, this is a issue worth addressing quickly.

In summary, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has been criticized for not being engaging enough from behind the wheel or distinctive enough in its features to eclipse its competitors. The new Atlas is good, but it may not be memorable until Volkswagen's fully electric options are available. Additionally, the Atlas Cross Sport has been predicted to be less reliable than other new cars based on limited data from the Atlas Cross Sport and the Volkswagen brand scores. Lastly, there is a recall campaign for some of its SUVs due to a potentially catastrophic engine problem.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-19
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1V2GC2CA6MC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The recall has been an ongoing issue; since I am from a smaller valley, Imperial Valley, my dealership has not been able to provide the parts for the repair, this is a major recall seeing as the passenger seat airbag may not deploy. I see no urgency to repair and no customer care. I personally have had to call the dealership asking for updates multiple times and no one is able to assist with the repair due to not having parts. I use my vehicle to rent on the TURO app and this has held up part of my income due to not being able to list the vehicle due to the safety concern. A prompt response or repair would greatly be appreciated from the dealer if they truly car about the safety of their customers.

  • VIN: 1V2AE2CAXRC

After pulling onto a major highway, the car stopped in front of oncoming traffic and the rpm’s shot up. After letting off the gas and pressing again, the car then shifted and was able to drive. Stalling on a major highway puts me and others at risk of crashing if I am unable to move my vehicle suddenly. No warning lamps were present then or now. According to my owners manual, I am to alert the NHTSA and Volkswagen. My next step is to reach out to Volkswagen.

  • Summary: Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am writing to express my frustration with the ongoing issues with my Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. Despite repeated repair efforts, the situation has become unsustainable. As a one-car household, visiting the dealership multiple times a month is both financially and personally stressful. While the service department has been excellent in trying to address the problems, the recurring issues are straining my relationship with the dealership. I need a reliable vehicle, especially given the $19,000 down payment we cannot afford to lose. We chose the SE model for ethical reasons (no leather), but it has been problematic, and we are now open to other solutions. Here is a list of issues we’ve encountered over the last 10 months: Atlas Number 1 (2 months): Loose exhaust shield Auto Start/Stop feature not functioning Start button unresponsive Rear windows would not close Infotainment system freezing Dashboard speaker grill falling off Rattle in rear door Atlas Number 2 (7 months): Front bumper damaged; required body shop repair Driver's window scratched and replaced Front parking sensors failed Windows malfunction and don’t auto close Infotainment system freezing; display going black Console cover broke twice Headlights repeatedly replaced, failing calibration Backup camera feed going black; needed replacement Headlight control module needed replacement Rattle in front door Dashboard speaker grill falling off Persistent front-end shake at highway speeds (tires rebalanced twice) Steering-responsive headlights fail to return to center, requiring a vehicle restart Recent repairs haven’t resolved these issues. The headlights still fail to center, the infotainment system continues to go black, and the backup camera still malfunctions. A software update is expected in January, but I need a solution in the meantime. Please help us resolve this situation—it's financially and practically unsustainable.

Latest negative Volkswagen Atlas cross sport car reviews

  1. Fausto Towne 2025-11-21

    Vehicle year: 2022

The car's performance is commendable, however, the frequency of issues experienced within a short period of time is concerning. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this car for purchase or use.

  2. Owen Kohler 2025-11-19

    Vehicle year: 2022

As a long-time Honda enthusiast, I was in the market for an SUV and initially considered the Passport. However, I wasn't quite sold on its appearance. That's when I came across the Cross Sport and fell in love with its sleek and stylish design. A friend who owned a Passat warned me about the potential high cost of repairs due to German over-engineering, which was a concern since I had previously owned a BMW that cost me a fortune in repairs. Despite my reservations, I decided to lease the Cross Sport for 33 months to ensure any issues would be covered by VW. Unfortunately, I experienced some minor issues right from the start, such as the foot sensor on the rear hatch not working correctly and the airbag sensor needing to be fixed twice. Although there is now an official recall, the parts are not yet available from VW. Additionally, the infotainment system has some function buttons that work intermittently, and the dash/interior lighting also has some issues. These electronic problems are difficult to diagnose and fix, which is inconvenient since I have to repeatedly take the car to the dealer (40 miles round trip) without any resolution. Unlike Honda, VW does not offer rentals while your car is in the shop, which makes it challenging to leave the car for a thorough inspection since I need it to get to work. Despite the car's gorgeous appearance, roominess, and plush interior, the overall experience has been frustrating. The V6 engine has poor gas mileage, but I anticipated that. I cannot wait until my lease ends so I can find another car. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend VW due to poor dealer service, non-existent manufacturer support, and spotty quality.

The dealer service has been poor, and the manufacturer's support has been non-existent. I would seriously consider other options before choosing a VW.

  4. Bart Pfeffer 2025-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2024

Consider looking elsewhere for a more reliable vehicle at this price point. This car has required a new steering rack, new sway bar links, new AC Schrader valves, 3 air bag modules, and a new transmission after two separate leaks, all in under 10,000 miles. It is worth noting that other owners have reported similar issues.

  5. Kole Kohler 2025-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2022

This vehicle has proven to be extremely unreliable, with numerous recalls and persistent electrical issues. Unfortunately, the customer service provided by VW service centers and VW reps has been subpar. I strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle, despite its attractive appearance.

  1. Favian Orn 2025-11-21

    Vehicle year: 2021

I owned a 2021 Cross Sport SE Premium for 14 months before trading it in. While I loved the Cross Sport and miss it dearly, I believe my particular vehicle had some issues. However, I don't think this is necessarily the case for all Cross Sports. Despite the issues, I found the car to be comfortable and a joy to drive. In my opinion, it is also the most beautiful car on the road. Unfortunately, I did experience some problems with the car. The first issue was a strut rattle, which the dealership initially couldn't find. After a second visit, they replaced a part of the strut, which fixed the rattle. The second issue was with the crash avoidance system. The first time it engaged, it almost caused an accident with a motorcycle cop behind me, even though I was far enough back to avoid a collision. I turned the system off to prevent this from happening again, but it still engaged twice in one week, causing the brakes to make a grinding noise. Before I could take it to the shop, the car turned itself off at a red light with an error message saying the door was open. It took several attempts to get the car started again. The service department initially refused to believe that the anti-collision system could have caused the damage to the rotors, but I was able to prove otherwise with a recent inspection. The electrical issue turned out to be a sensor, and I had to take it back to the shop a few months later for the same door sensor issue. Despite these problems, I still have fond memories of my time with the Cross Sport.Along with the door sensor replacement, they also had to replace the wiring harness in the door, which they now believe was the root cause of the sensor failure. Four times was enough for me to realize it was time to move on. Although I would have liked to get another Cross Sport, they didn't have any available with the same or better features as mine. Additionally, the gas mileage was not great, but that's to be expected with a V6 engine.

  2. Koby Gutmann 2025-11-17

    Vehicle year: 2020

I had no idea that VW had released the Cross Sport. A couple of years ago, we test drove the full-size Atlas and enjoyed it, but it felt a bit too large for our needs. Recently, when we were in the market for a new car, I contacted our VW salesperson, who assured me that I would love the new Cross Sport. Initially, I was considering the Tiguan or Honda CRV, but after test driving those, and then the new Cross Sport, the decision was easy. I am in love with the features of the SE Tech model, and I opted for the 20” tires with the panoramic sunroof, which was totally worth it! The IQ headlights are fantastic for driving, and the wireless Apple CarPlay is a great addition. I went for the black and gray interior, and the VW paint is truly unique. This vehicle offers plenty of space and luxury, and it looks fantastic!

  3. Ashton Beahan 2025-11-16

    Vehicle year: 2020

Congratulations on your new 2020 SEL Premium R Line! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your new SUV and that it's exceeding your expectations. It's always exciting to try something new, especially when it turns out to be such a positive experience. The gas mileage of 21.7 MPH is impressive, and it's great that it takes regular gas. The interior room sounds spacious and the features of the SEL Premium R Line are impressive. The 480 watt Fender audio system sounds like a great addition, and the adjustable seating is a nice touch. The storage space is also impressive, especially with the rear seats folded. The 5 foot sunroof is a wonderful feature, too. It's clear that the exterior styling is a standout feature of the Cross Sport, and it's great to hear that you've received so many positive comments on it. It's always nice to have a vehicle that brings you joy. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I purchased this vehicle in November 2020 and I'm thrilled with my decision. The 2.0T AWD engine drives very smoothly and has enough power for driving around town. It's a great SUV for big and tall people or anyone who prefers a spacious cabin.
