toyota logo

The Toyota Venza is a five-passenger mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market, beginning with its introduction in 2008 and now in its second generation — with a hiatus for model years 2018–2019.

The first-generation Venza was based on the XV40 series Camry platform and marketed between 2008 and 2017 — and shared the platform with the AL10 series Lexus RX. The second-generation model is a rebadged Japanese-market XU80 series Harrier and has been sold since September 2020.

The name "Venza" is a mix of "Venture" and "Monza."

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH6NJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am the primary driver of our 2022 Toyota Venza. On [XXX] I had just taken the car through the Splash automated car wash on [XXX] and I was navigating into an adjacent space for use of the vacuum cleaners. As I took my foot off the accelerator to put the vehicle into Park, it suddenly and unintentionally accelerated. It crossed the driveway entrance to the car wash, jumped a curb which was actually the top of retaining wall for the parking lot of the adjacent business, and sailed over the retaining wall into the parking lot which was over 2 feet lower than the level of the car wash. I was able to bring the car to a stop without hitting anything, but 3 tires were blown out and severe damage occurred to the underside and front end of the car (we are awaiting estimates of the damage to the car). The airbags did not deploy. I had a minor shoulder bruise from the seat belt but no other injury. The car is at an auto repair shop awaitinng estimates and adjuster inspection. No report has yet been filed with Toyota but we expect to file today. No independent service center or other inspection has been done yet. There was no warning system notification prior to the incident. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-24
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH9NJ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Headlights cast a shadow at night — particularly to left. Vision obscured in shadow area and cannot see what is in road. As well, turning corners think something is in road because of shadow and want to pull away. This is definitely a hazard and has been reported on Toyota nation and seems to effect more than the venza and needs to be addressed because it is a safety issue. I bought the vehicle used on 2/23/24 and had no idea this was an issue has been reported but not fixed.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH2NJ
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: There looks like 4 or 5 lines of top layer crack like stretch marks on the windshield in 3 different locations. It doesnt look like a normal crack when it was hit by a rock. And they are scratchy and scratching the windshield wiper blades.
2024-02-26

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-25
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH2NJ
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Three times now over the past 4 months, including an incident yesterday, when I try to accelerate from a stop, the car just rolls forward slowly as if in neutral, but there is zero acceleration power for about 5 seconds, and then it engages and accelerates like normal. There are no warning lights, no codes, no nothing at all, including acceleration power. The car acts as if everything is fine, but it doesn't accelerate at all for several seconds. Every time that this has happened has been when I was pulling out into traffic on a very busy road. I am about to call the dealership about this issue, but since there are no warning lights activated, there won't be any codes that will show up, and they won't be able to diagnose the problem. When I searched online, "Toyota Venza won't accelerate", there are at least a half dozen people in forums that I've found that have experienced the exact same issue, which hasn't been resolved because the car doesn't register any issues, so the dealership can't find any system codes indicating that there is a problem. I am incredibly concerned about this because the entrance to my neighborhood is on a steep incline, and I usually have to quickly accelerate onto the main road, which is very busy and has a blind curve on the left hand side. Random failure to accelerate is incredibly dangerous already, but at least twice a day every day I have to pull out of my neighborhood. I am very concerned that one of these acceleration failures will end up getting me or one of my family members seriously harmed or killed if this isn't addressed soon. Venzas are lesser known models, so there are limited numbers of them on the road, but this issue is a serious safety hazard that is going to get someone killed if not addressed, it's only a matter of time.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-04
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH7NJ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: No acceleration from stop, sudden loss of power. I was stopped, coming out of a parking lot, getting ready to do a right turn onto a main road. I let go of the brake pedal, and when I applied pressure to the gas pedal, there was no acceleration, like the engine was stalled. The car crept forward slightly, but could not accelerate at any measurable speed. After about 3-4 seconds, it finally started accelerating as normal.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-09
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH3NJ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Headlight / Dashboard design of this vehicle is defective. With DRL lights only on, the dashboard fully lights up, misleading a driver into believing they have their headlights and taillights turned on. This kind of defective design is not limited to Toyota, can also be seen on many other Honda and Nissan vehicles. This needs to be addressed urgently, as many drivers drive without correct illumination at night, and they are a hazard to other drivers.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-29
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH8NJ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When driving in slowed traffic the car would not accelerate for 3-5 seconds. No warning lights appeared. I had slowed to 5mph and upon pressing the gas pedal the car had no response and put me in danger as all traffic around me accelerated and the Venza would not respond to gas pedal. I removed foot from pedal and tried again and after sustained gas pedal for 3 seconds the car slowly resumed movement.

  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Front window screen cracked from bottom right corner to center.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-23
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH6NJ
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: There is an acceleration issue that only happens sporadically. From a stopped position (stop sign/stop light) when I let go of the break and start acceleration with the gas pedal, it doesn't work. Even if I press down more in the gas pedal, it merely creeps- as if it were in neutral. It happens with turns or going straight. I have no clue what could be causing it. The breaks still work, and the gas pedal starts working again after about approx 10 or 15 ft of rolling. When the gas begins working again its a smooth engagement- no jarring or revving. And it only happens sporadically, maybe 8 times since I bought it in 2022. I have had it looked over at the dealership twice and they found nothing and are not willing to fix this issue- as they say there isn't one. I worry greatly that this will result in a crash.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-17
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH5NJ
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: RECENTLY PURCHASED WITH 35,000 MILES AS A CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE. AT 36,000 MILES, HAVE NOTICED A CRACKED WINDSHIELD THAT RUNS THE WIDTH OF THE WINDSHIELD JUST ABOVE WHERE THE WIPERBLADES SIT. THERE IS NO VISIBLE MARK ON THE OUTSIDE FROM ANYTHING HITTING IT. AFTER LOOKING ON LINE, I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE FOR THE VENZA.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-12
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH8NJ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: WHEN DRIVING AFTER DARK IT LOOKS LIKE A SHADE GOT PULLED DOWN OVER 1/2 OF THE WINDSHIELD PLUS ANOTHER BLACK SPOT UNDER THAT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE HAD MANY COMPLAINTS. I HAD THEM ADJUST THE HEAdlamps up a little bit but now everyone is blinking brites at me and even pulling off the road the next thing will be a road rage driver. it is impossible to drive after dark without the brites on you can not see road signs because the headlamps aim down if you go down a hill all you see is a few feet ahead it is definately a severe safety concern toyota dealer said it was the way the headlight is designed and if they get enough complaints they might do something but right now my new car i bought is sitting in my garage because it is not d safe to drive except during the day i have had other people in the car and they all say the same thing (who pulled the shade down) its that bad

  • VIN: JTEAAAAH4NJ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Small rock flipped up by car in front of me, hitting the windshield. Windshield immediately cracked about 21". Have owned many cars with rock chipped windshields, but none have ever cracked immediately, or as badly, as this car! This pebble should have left maybe a small chip. Looked online, and other Venza owners are reporting the same thing. Glass or design is a problem.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-31
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH3NJ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: There is a black shadow/blotch/blob in the driver side headlight. This blob bounces with the headlights depending on road condition. It is extremely distracting when driving at night. I live in an area with minimal streetlights and am often on dark, country roads with abundant wildlife. This blob both obscures my vision and leads me to think there’s an animal on the road. I find the lack of clarity and the distraction hazardous. Yes, this problem has been confirmed by a dealer. No, there has not been an inspection by any of the parties mentioned. This problem has been an issue since purchase in October 2022.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-28
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH1NJ
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Windshield without any chips cracked while sitting in my driveway, presumably due to the heat of the day. It was 85 degrees. The crack starts at the drivers side edge and extends to just past the rear view mirror from 4 to 6 inches from the bottom edge of the windshield.

The contact stated that the failure recurred within less than 3 months. The auto glass company had previously replaced the front windshield with an OEM part. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,500.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-22
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH5NJ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: On multiple occasions, my 2022 Venza does not accelerate when hitting the gas pedal after coming to a complete stop. I can press the pedal all the way to the ground but it is delayed by 3-5 seconds and just idles slowly into the intersection. This is happening when turning onto streets where you need to accelerate quickly to avoid oncoming traffic on left turns, and to not get rear ended when making right turns. No dash lights come on, the safety system is not engaged, no warning lights. The Venza is less than a year old and has 7k miles. I’ve seen several threads online of this exact issue happening on other 2021+ Venzas. The local Toyota dealer will not inspect without a $175 fee even though it passed the last safety check fully, is under warranty and I’ve provided exact date/time stamps of when this occurs and have dash cam footage showing the conditions and delay in acceleration. Corporate Toyota is unresponsive to emails and calls as well. This is extremely dangerous and is going to cause an accident.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-09
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH6NJ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My 2022 Toyota Venza Hybrid experienced a sudden acceleration when I was pulling very slowly into my relative's garage driveway while my foot was still on the brake pedal. It crashed into the garage door at fairly high speed severely damaging the vehicle's front end. All front airbags were deployed. The garage door was destroyed and the two cars parked inside the garage were bumped a short distance forward resulting multiple damages to their front/rear bumpers and their bodies. The wall inside the garage was also damaged. No alarm/warnings were given and Autobrake completely failed to deploy.

  • VIN: JTEAAAAH1NJ
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: We have a 2022 Toyota Venza Limited with 5,020 miles. We have had the car for around 7 months. The windshield has excessive pitting and chipping. When the Sun hits the windshield at a certain angle the pitting and chipping causes visual impairment. The Venza is driven mainly on local street.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-24
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH6NJ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The outside mirrors did not open, maybe weather related. The outside temperature registered 15 degrees or lower. In Pennsylvania and other states require outside mirrors for the deaf and hard of hearing. Two dual mirrors are required, placing disabled drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other drivers at risk. There should be a recall on vehicles with similar mirrors that automatically do not open. John Ramos

VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-10
  • VIN: JTEAAAAH9NJ
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: High frequency vibration of the Driver side external mirror at speeds above 45 miles per hr. As a result it impossible to make out vehicles and vehicle details beyond 15 meter behind. It's hard to focus the eyes to mirror. Could be happening to passenger side to but undiscernible from driverside. Vehicle issue found less than 5 days from the date of delivery(1st Sep 2022). Toyota doesn't have a solution is what the dealer is saying trying to get replacement mirror. Issue had been confirmed Toyota refusing to provide replacement or acknowledgement of the problem. Problem with Toyota Safety sense DRCC, LDA, LTA, ETC. There is a body roll, at high speed and cornering vehicle feel unstable. During DRCC if the speed is set say at 70 miles, one has ability to accelerate more by pressing the accelerator. Say the speed is increased to 80 miles per hr. The car doesn't sometime start slowing down after taking foot off the pedal. Sometime the speed continues to increase where the car should start slowing down when pressing of the pedal stops. Had to force brake due to safety concerns and possibility of a accident with the vehicle at the front. Tested few times same behavior. The lane keep is finicky and many times just doesn't provide the visual confirmation at the gauge and misbehaves in cornering in a major way. Keep assist looses control and strat drifting to the left and the applied force tends to pull or force to the left the car left. Pull more to the left during cornering and the assist forces to the left on its own instead of staying in the middle of the lane. High speed cornering feels unstable and with DRCC acceleration and speed doesn't account for vehicle stability. Had to brake multiple times to make sure the vehicle stability is not compromised. There seems to some level of system issue that is not getting addressed though this is a tested platform.

Negative 2022 Toyota Venza car reviews

  1. Emmanuel Schiller 2024-08-18

I've been driving my new Venza for just over 2 months and have put on just over 2000 miles. I absolutely love the way it drives and looks! However, I have experienced some issues with the information screen randomly shutting off three times and occasional difficulty connecting to my iPhone. Additionally, I've noticed that I'm only getting around 554 miles to a tank, despite Toyota stating that it should be closer to 566 miles per tank. Despite these issues, I still find the Venza to be a fun and sporty small SUV. UPDATE: Overall, I'm happy with the car itself, but I do have some concerns about the gas tank. Toyota claims that it has a 14.5 gallon tank with an estimated gas mileage of 566 miles per tank, but I've never been able to put more than 11.5 gallons of gas in my tank (even when I've pushed it to 3 miles to empty) and have never gotten better than 440-460 miles to a tank. I feel like I've been misled and that Toyota needs to address this issue. I've heard that the RAV4 had a similar problem, so perhaps Toyota should consider a recall. I hope Toyota will do better in the future and be more transparent about the real numbers.

We had the car for about a month and had driven 810 miles when it unexpectedly had to be towed due to a dead battery and logic reprogramming. Fortunately, we were at home and not stranded on the road. Although completing the towing form online was a bit frustrating as it did not accept the Vin number, Toyota kept us updated throughout the process. We now make sure to always have our smartphone with us. Occasionally, we have had some trouble with the Venza not shifting gears properly, which was not an issue with our previous Honda CRV. Despite this, we are pleased with the car's performance and fuel efficiency, averaging about 42 miles per gallon. As retired seniors, we do not take many long trips, but we appreciate the parking sensors and cross traffic alert. The XLE model we chose had most of the features we wanted, although the storage could have been better designed. Overall, we are happy with our purchase and enjoy the car's comfortable ride and peppy performance.

  3. Max Lowe 2024-05-10

I'm really enjoying my new Venza, but unfortunately I've had to jump start it twice since purchasing it due to the starter battery not having enough power to start the car. I mainly use this car for running errands, but it seems that the 12volt starter battery needs you to drive more than one mile in order to recharge. I've taken it into the dealership twice and they recommended a trickle charge, which I am doing. However, I must admit that I'm a bit hesitant to use this car for multiple short trips as I've lost confidence in its ability to start. It's frustrating to have to put the car on a trickle charger after running errands, but I'm hopeful that this will resolve the issue.

  4. Okey Howell 2024-03-09

I recently purchased a loaded Limited with Star Gaze and I'm happy with the initial experience. The Venza is returning 39-42 MPG, which is impressive compared to other Toyota Hybrids I've owned in the past. Although the Avalon Hybrid was nicer, I prefer the Venza's easier in/out height. The new Venza caught my attention while I was driving a 2020 Subaru Outback Touring, which was good but lacked style and fuel efficiency. As someone who drives 30K+ per year, I decided to switch back to a hybrid due to rising gas prices. The Venza is stylish, has a nicely appointed interior, and has enough get up and go for its size. Although the driving dynamics are not sporty, I'm okay with that. The Star Gaze roof is interesting, but living in Sunny SWFL, it stays covered. The touch screen is better than the Subaru, but I would like some basic knobs. The interior storage is smaller than I'm accustomed to, but I hope I can live with it. Although I'm a bit disappointed in the tire/road noise, especially on not perfectly smooth pavement, I'm overall happy with the Venza. Update after about 6 weeks: Although I tend to trade cars every couple of years, this is the first time I've regretted my choice so quickly.I apologize for my mistake in choosing the Venza based on its impressive online appearance, as it did not live up to my expectations in person. Unfortunately, due to limited inventory, I had to order it without being able to spend time with it beforehand. While I have owned many other Toyota Hybrids in the past, including luxurious models like the Avalon and Lexus ES300 Hybrid, I found the Venza to be lacking in certain areas. Although it has a nice interior and good looks, the limited interior storage and cargo capacity were disappointing, and the ride quality was harsh for a vehicle in its price range. Additionally, the touch screen was challenging to use and lacked basic buttons or knobs. Despite these issues, the Venza is still a good car and I expect it to be dependable. However, I would recommend potential buyers to carefully consider their needs and preferences before making a purchase. Maybe its sibling for other markets, with some lipstick and high heels to make it flashier for the USA market. I wasn't that impressed. However, I eventually traded it for a Highlander Platinum and found that it was exactly what I should have bought in the first place.

I have a limited trim, without the optional frost/no frost skylight. I really enjoy the steering, braking, and accelerating. The cameras for parking and avoiding garage door collisions are clear and useful. The lane centering works well, although it sometimes goes off because it can't find the lane markers. Similarly, the adaptive cruise control loses the vehicle in front more easily than my Subaru. Overall, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 could use some improvement. There is some occasional buzzing of the steering wheel that I don't understand. Additionally, there is too much wind noise on the highway. However, I have no complaints about the CVT, braking, switching from battery to gas operation, or tap-tap-tapping to adjust sound volume, fan speed, etc. On a 500 mile trip, the seat remained comfortable despite my 36” legs! Just be careful when getting in and out of the passenger seat, but once inside, it's fine.

This vehicle is fantastic! I've had it for 8 months and my fuel mileage overall is an impressive 47.3 MPG, well above the posted figures. It's also incredibly comfortable, and most importantly, my wife loves driving it. It's just so easy to like! However, there are a few downsides to consider. It's much smaller than my 2015 Venza, and there's not enough storage in the back for my liking. Even a couple of suitcases and a cooler fills the back FULL! Additionally, there's not enough nick-nack storage. The caddie won't hold a full-size Sig or 1911, spare glasses, and whatever else I need. But don't worry, you don't need to buy the top model. We bought the middle model with a couple of add-ons and saved about $4k. Overall, we're very happy with this car!

A lot of reviewers call the Venza Toyota's version of a Lexus SUV. It's not. However, the Venza is still an impressive vehicle. It's loaded with cool tech, has great body styling, and is priced competitively. While there may be more road noise than some luxury vehicles, it's still a great option for those looking for a stylish and affordable SUV.

2 Yr. Update: I've driven 100,000 miles (I drive a lot) and I'm happy to report that I haven't had a single issue. The factory tires lasted an impressive 70k miles and I've only had to pay for regular maintenance. In my original review, I mentioned that I was consistently getting 45-46.5 mpg driving as I normally do (southern climate) and I'm still thrilled with the mpg! The Venza Limited handles well and while Toyota's safety features can be a bit annoying, it practically drives itself on cruise. After reading the manual and watching some tips/tricks videos online, many of the tech features are easier to understand. The 360° camera is a dream and the upgraded seats are actual a/c, not just ventilated. The only downside so far is the cabin lighting, which is quite dim and there is no central dome light. I've had to use my phone flashlight a few times to find something in my purse.

We began our search for a new SUV with extensive online research. After reading reviews, I was excited about the prospect of owning a CX5. However, during the test drive, I found that the exterior was not as appealing as the online photos, the interior was just average, and the driving performance was too tight for my liking. Additionally, there was significant turbo lag when accelerating. On our way home, we passed a Toyota dealer and I was immediately drawn to the elegant yet sporty Venza in coastal gray. After taking it for a test drive, I was blown away by how enjoyable it was to drive. The ride was smooth and luxurious, the interior was beautifully designed, and it was equipped with all the latest technology. Plus, thanks to the electric motors, it had instant acceleration at any speed. Sometimes, a car just ticks all the boxes that are important to you, and for me, that car was the Venza. My wife loves it too, and as an environmentalist, she was impressed with the mileage (we're averaging 40 mpg, 45 around town) and has decided to sell her Mini Cooper because the Venza has significantly lower emissions. We're now in a friendly competition to see who can achieve the best eco-driving score (which she's likely to win because I prefer driving in sport mode). Saving the planet has never been so enjoyable!
