Toyota Venza problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Venza is a five-passenger mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market, beginning with its introduction in 2008 and now in its second generation — with a hiatus for model years 2018–2019.

The first-generation Venza was based on the XV40 series Camry platform and marketed between 2008 and 2017 — and shared the platform with the AL10 series Lexus RX. The second-generation model is a rebadged Japanese-market XU80 series Harrier and has been sold since September 2020.

The name "Venza" is a mix of "Venture" and "Monza."

Toyota Venza

Is the Toyota Venza a reliable car?

The Toyota Venza Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 3rd out of 26 for midsize SUVs. The average annual repair cost is $444 which means it has excellent ownership costs. Repairs are less severe than average, and the frequency of these issues is average, so major repairs are not common for the Venza.

What are the issues with Venza?

2 Common Toyota Venza Problems

  • Musty and Moldy A/C. Toyota air conditioners smell like mold in numerous vehicles. ...
  • Rodents Chew Soy-Coated Wires. Somewhere in the mid-2000's there was an industry-wide push by automakers to replace plastic and glass-based wiring insulation with a more eco-friendly soy-based coating.

Why is the Toyota Venza not popular?

The current Venza is often critiqued for its poor cargo capacity compared to competitors, lacking SUV features/options like roof rails or any usable towing capability, but it also offers a claimed best-in-class EPA efficiency rating of 39 MPG combined.

What is the disadvantage of Venza?

Minimal Cargo Capacity

Unfortunately, there isn't too much cargo capacity in the Toyota Venza. It's much smaller than most of the competitors in its class, which proves to be a problem. You'll only find 28.8 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat.

  • Summary: My wife owns this Toyota Venza. On October 9, 2024, I took the vehicle to the dealership for maintenance and all regular checkups passed. No sensor lights nor problem lights were on during the incident. On October 16, 2024 my wife was parking in a spot to pick up the mail in our community's mailbox. She pressed the brake and tried to park the vehicle when suddenly the motor accelerated over the parking lines on its own to a small hill continuously. My wife tried to press the brake multiple times with no success and the motor continued accelerating on its own. My wife turned the steering wheel to the right to avoid running into the hill or flipping the vehicle over. Once turned, the vehicle continued accelerating crossing over a neighborhood street and finally crashing into a neighbor's wall. Once it crashed the wall, all air bags were deployed and the vehicle rebounded back into the street where my wife was eventually able to shift it into parking. Once parked, the vehicle wouldn't start or move at all. Thankfully, there were no fatalities but my wife crashed into a wall and had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for the bruises in her legs and body from the air bag impact. Additionally, our community is gated and thankfully there is little traffic but this problem in a main road or highway could easily injure or kill people. We reported the accident to the local police and filed a report with them. We also notified insurance of the crash and have started a repair claim but the vehicle has not been inspected for any damages or problems. We have video recording of the incident which we will use for insurance and can provide as part of this complaint.

Latest negative Toyota Venza car reviews

  1. Leon West 2025-03-13

    Vehicle year: 2012

We received our brand new Venza in September 2010 and have since driven it for 56,000 miles. Unfortunately, we have experienced a number of issues with the vehicle, both major and minor. These have included problems with the transmission, electrical issues such as check engine lights and malfunctions with the nav/radio unit, as well as troubles with the sunroof. Despite these issues, we have found the ride to be comfortable and enjoyable. However, we have noticed that the fuel mileage is not as good as we had hoped, averaging just 16.5 mpg on mostly highway driving. For comparison, our 2010 Full size GM Yukon V8 gets 19mpg. Overall, we have had some challenges with our Venza, but we still enjoy driving it.

  2. Milton Conroy 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 2009

It's a good-looking car with great trunk space that's wider than many SUVs. The 6-cylinder engine provides great acceleration and the car is fairly nimble when driving around town. However, Toyota cut too many costs with this car. The plastic dash and faux wood inserts look cheap, and the leather looks like shiny vinyl. Additionally, the cabin can be quite loud at high speeds, and the low profile of the 20-inch tires means you feel every bump. Despite having 13 JBL speakers, the sound quality is average. The navigation and backup camera work fine, but the screen resolution is quite low. Unfortunately, at 30k miles, the steering column had to be replaced, and at 36k miles, the transmission is starting to whine.

  3. Carmine Nienow 2025-02-16

    Vehicle year: 2012

Toyota should have made some easy changes to improve this car. Despite being less than 2 years old, a significant number of people have complained about the tire size, cost, and fast wear. It is concerning that neither Walmart nor Costco carry a tire this size, and local shops are charging $1,250 to replace all 4 tires, which wear out very quickly. This issue needs to be addressed promptly by Toyota.

  4. Abdullah Dicki 2025-02-04

    Vehicle year: 2011

I recently purchased a 2011 Venza, but unfortunately, I am not satisfied with its handling. At highway speeds, it requires constant attention to keep it straight and tends to wander out of the lane. Additionally, the ride is not as smooth as I had expected. Despite checking the tire pressure, which was set at 32 psi, the issue persisted after two separate 2-hour trips. I suspect that the electronic steering may be the cause of the problem. In comparison, my 2007 Honda Accord handles exceptionally well and requires very little attention to stay straight. Although I had intended for the Venza to be my primary road trip car due to its larger interior, I am now reconsidering my options.

  1. Richmond Buckridge 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 2011

I had the 2011 Venza and it was the best car I ever owned! Although it was a SUV, it was a bit bumpier on certain roads than I expected. Unfortunately, I had to sell it because my husband didn't trust the dealership on the latest repair they said was needed. (He used to work on cars but is unable to now). However, it was the first vehicle I could slide into and get out of without any trouble. The interior was so roomy that everyone commented on it. If new Venzas are manufactured again, I will definitely check them out. Currently, I am leasing a Lincoln and I am very disappointed as it does not live up to my expectations of a luxury vehicle. The Venza has it beat by miles! I have emailed Toyota a couple of times asking if they would build the Venza again because I want another one with the same look.

  2. Jonathon Koch 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 2021

I've been driving my Venza Limited for 6 months now without any issues. Although it's not a race car, the acceleration is a big step up from the second generation Chevy Equinox I was driving. When driving in sport mode, the acceleration is even nicer. I didn't even bother trying to pass slow-moving vehicles in my Equinox. Even when driving aggressively, I'm averaging 36mpg. My best is about 52mpg for a short 20-mile trip across town and back. Toyota has been using this platform and engine for nearly 3 years (Harrier in Japan), so there's no need to be fearful about buying a first model year. The safety features are a big step up as well. Perhaps the biggest compliment, other than a droning engine when pushed hard, is that you don't even realize you're driving a hybrid most of the time. The regenerative braking is extremely smooth. The seats are extremely comfortable, and the JBL sound system sounds great. The Venza is much quieter than the RAV4s that I test drove before purchasing my Venza. It's not Lexus quiet, but having the extra sound deadening makes the audio system sound even better. It does lack handy storage and has less cargo space than a RAV4, but the interior looks WAY nicer. Before purchasing, I studied up on the eCVT, and it is absolutely nothing like a standard CVT, which has a metal belt that eventually wears out. Although it doesn't have gears like a standard transmission, it does have gears rather than a belt. Weber State University has this excellent video discussing the hybrid transaxle, which is really a better term for the transmission in this vehicle: https://youtu.be/O61WihMRdjM. We received about 8 to 10 inches of snow right before spring came, so I took my Venza out to test its all-wheel-drive function in the fresh snow, and I couldn't get it to handle poorly no matter how hard I tried. The computer system would send power to the appropriate wheels extremely quickly to keep the car driving straight.I really appreciate the fact that there is no mechanical drivetrain connecting the back wheels, just an electric motor that is computer controlled. I am happy to report that after 6 months and about 6,000 miles, I am still extremely pleased with my Toyota Venza purchase. If you are considering a hybrid (and you definitely should be), this car should definitely be on your short list!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you purchased your car back in November 2011 and have been experiencing a bumpy ride. That's a shame, especially since you love everything else about the car. Have you tried changing the tires? I know it can be expensive, but it might be worth a shot. I've seen other people complain about the same issue, so you're definitely not alone. Let me know if you need any help or advice. Best of luck!

I've only had my gray XLE AWD for a few days, but so far, I'm pleased. I was looking for a reliable, good-looking ride with decent MPG and utility that's reasonably fun to drive. The Venza is great-looking, and the sheet metal, which hasn't changed since the model was introduced in 2009, looks fantastic from all angles. It's enhanced with the bold 20

I love my new hybrid SUV! It's sleek and beautiful both inside and out. Plus, it's fast on the highway and gets great MPG. Even the basic model comes with plenty of options, and they're all hybrid and AWD no matter which one you choose.
