Toyota Venza problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Venza is a five-passenger mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market, beginning with its introduction in 2008 and now in its second generation — with a hiatus for model years 2018–2019.

The first-generation Venza was based on the XV40 series Camry platform and marketed between 2008 and 2017 — and shared the platform with the AL10 series Lexus RX. The second-generation model is a rebadged Japanese-market XU80 series Harrier and has been sold since September 2020.

The name "Venza" is a mix of "Venture" and "Monza."

Is the Toyota Venza a reliable car?

The Toyota Venza Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 3rd out of 26 for midsize SUVs. The average annual repair cost is $444 which means it has excellent ownership costs. Repairs are less severe than average, and the frequency of these issues is average, so major repairs are not common for the Venza.

What are the issues with Venza?

2 Common Toyota Venza Problems

  • Musty and Moldy A/C. Toyota air conditioners smell like mold in numerous vehicles. ...
  • Rodents Chew Soy-Coated Wires. Somewhere in the mid-2000's there was an industry-wide push by automakers to replace plastic and glass-based wiring insulation with a more eco-friendly soy-based coating.

Why is the Toyota Venza not popular?

The current Venza is often critiqued for its poor cargo capacity compared to competitors, lacking SUV features/options like roof rails or any usable towing capability, but it also offers a claimed best-in-class EPA efficiency rating of 39 MPG combined.

What is the disadvantage of Venza?

Minimal Cargo Capacity

Unfortunately, there isn't too much cargo capacity in the Toyota Venza. It's much smaller than most of the competitors in its class, which proves to be a problem. You'll only find 28.8 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat.

  • Summary: My wife owns this Toyota Venza. On October 9, 2024, I took the vehicle to the dealership for maintenance and all regular checkups passed. No sensor lights nor problem lights were on during the incident. On October 16, 2024 my wife was parking in a spot to pick up the mail in our community's mailbox. She pressed the brake and tried to park the vehicle when suddenly the motor accelerated over the parking lines on its own to a small hill continuously. My wife tried to press the brake multiple times with no success and the motor continued accelerating on its own. My wife turned the steering wheel to the right to avoid running into the hill or flipping the vehicle over. Once turned, the vehicle continued accelerating crossing over a neighborhood street and finally crashing into a neighbor's wall. Once it crashed the wall, all air bags were deployed and the vehicle rebounded back into the street where my wife was eventually able to shift it into parking. Once parked, the vehicle wouldn't start or move at all. Thankfully, there were no fatalities but my wife crashed into a wall and had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for the bruises in her legs and body from the air bag impact. Additionally, our community is gated and thankfully there is little traffic but this problem in a main road or highway could easily injure or kill people. We reported the accident to the local police and filed a report with them. We also notified insurance of the crash and have started a repair claim but the vehicle has not been inspected for any damages or problems. We have video recording of the incident which we will use for insurance and can provide as part of this complaint.

Latest negative Toyota Venza car reviews

  1. Loy Sipes 2025-05-09

    Vehicle year: 2010

I really like my vehicle, but I've had some issues with the Toyota service department. In the first year and a half of owning my fully loaded 2010 Venza AWD, everything was great. However, I recently had to get an extensive rear suspension repair due to a clunking noise in the rear, and unfortunately, the noise has returned just 3 months later. Additionally, the transmission started to shudder and slip, but Toyota replaced it, saying that it's a fairly common issue with the AWD model. Despite these issues, my car only has 27,000 careful miles. It does have a few squeaks and rattles, but overall, it's a great car.

  2. Reese Jones 2025-05-04

    Vehicle year: 2012

It's unfortunate to hear that your Venza has developed a hole in the floor carpet on the driver's side, especially with only 32,000 miles on it. It's understandable to be concerned about the quality of materials used by Toyota. Despite purchasing an extended warranty, the dealer and Toyota have stated that it is considered a wear item. Hopefully, the rest of the vehicle will hold up better for you.

  3. Berry Lindgren 2025-04-28

    Vehicle year: 2014

I bought this car brand new and have taken it to three different dealerships: one in Texas, one in Georgia, and the other here in Florida. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the brake pedal travel, which has caused me to almost hit the car in front of me on numerous occasions. It's been a very scary situation and has made me consider selling this car. The dealerships have all informed me that it's a design issue with this car and can't be fixed or improved. It's a shame because it's such a well thought out utility-sized vehicle. However, I'm hopeful that I can find a solution to this problem soon.

  4. Leon West 2025-03-13

    Vehicle year: 2012

We received our brand new Venza in September 2010 and have since driven it for 56,000 miles. Unfortunately, we have experienced a number of issues with the vehicle, both major and minor. These have included problems with the transmission, electrical issues such as check engine lights and malfunctions with the nav/radio unit, as well as troubles with the sunroof. Despite these issues, we have found the ride to be comfortable and enjoyable. However, we have noticed that the fuel mileage is not as good as we had hoped, averaging just 16.5 mpg on mostly highway driving. For comparison, our 2010 Full size GM Yukon V8 gets 19mpg. Overall, we have had some challenges with our Venza, but we still enjoy driving it.

  5. Milton Conroy 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 2009

It's a good-looking car with great trunk space that's wider than many SUVs. The 6-cylinder engine provides great acceleration and the car is fairly nimble when driving around town. However, Toyota cut too many costs with this car. The plastic dash and faux wood inserts look cheap, and the leather looks like shiny vinyl. Additionally, the cabin can be quite loud at high speeds, and the low profile of the 20-inch tires means you feel every bump. Despite having 13 JBL speakers, the sound quality is average. The navigation and backup camera work fine, but the screen resolution is quite low. Unfortunately, at 30k miles, the steering column had to be replaced, and at 36k miles, the transmission is starting to whine.

    Vehicle year: 2023

'Hi there! I've been the proud owner of a 2022 XLE for seven months now, and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations! With 8000 miles on it, the MPG keeps getting better and better. I always drive in ECO mode, and I haven't noticed any lack of power. While it would have been nice to have navigation at this price point, I didn't think it was worth the extra $2000. Instead, I installed a Garmin that does the job just fine. Recently, we went on a 2000-mile trip, and even at 75 to 80 MPH, the MPG was an impressive 46! The ride and handling were also better than expected. However, I was a bit disappointed that there's no power for the passenger side seating, and the OEM tires are not suitable for winter conditions in PA. I'll definitely have to replace them with all-weather tires this winter. But overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and would definitely buy it again. UPDATE: After a lot of thought and a long search, I decided to purchase a 2022 Venza XLE. This is my first hybrid, but my 5th Toyota, and I must say, I'm very pleased with the quality of the car. The MPG, ride, quietness, and handling are all top-notch. The only change I'm making is getting new tires, as the OEM Bridgestone tires are not suitable for western PA snow. While I'm not a fan of the $8 per month charge for connection to alerts after one year, I still think the car is the nicest one I've ever owned and plan to keep it for the remainder of my life. Well done, Toyota! Don D'

    Vehicle year: 2010

I must say, it sounds like you had quite the journey in finding the perfect car! After test driving a Prius and realizing that your Cadillac CTS wasn't the most comfortable for long trips, it seems like the Venza was the perfect solution. The passenger comfort in both the front and rear seats, with the added bonus of reclining rear seats, is truly impressive. It's spacious enough for four passengers and their luggage, with plenty of storage options. The controls are user-friendly, the doors open wide, and there are plenty of cubbyholes and pockets for storage. The ride and acceleration are excellent, and the AWD operates smoothly and seamlessly. Not to mention, the styling is fantastic and it's no surprise that you receive many compliments. It's wonderful to hear that you're still happy with your decision a year later!

  3. Kadin Wilderman 2025-05-10

    Vehicle year: 2022

The Venza has made a comeback after a 6-year absence, but many people are unsure of what it is. In my opinion, it doesn't quite fit the SUV category as it lacks the utility of most vehicles in this class. Although it is based on the Rav4, it doesn't offer the same amount of usable space. However, there are several reasons why I was drawn to this vehicle, including its hybrid technology, stylish design, and car-like handling. It has not disappointed me, although it does have some tradeoffs in terms of functionality. Despite its size, there is less room inside compared to other vehicles, partly due to its swoopy styling. Additionally, there are no cubbies or tie-downs in the rear, which can make it difficult to keep groceries in place. Nonetheless, there are two outstanding features that make this vehicle stand out. Firstly, it features AWD, and the drive train is pure mechanical genius. The switch from battery power to engine is flawless, and I was able to achieve an impressive 46 MPG on a recent 20-mile leisurely drive on country roads. Secondly, the JBL audio system that comes with the 12” head unit is amazing. It is optional on the XLE and standard on the Limited model, and the sound and clarity have to be heard to be believed. Lastly, the technology aspect of this vehicle is impressive, and it is an obvious preliminary to self-driving vehicles. The vehicle reads road signs and lane guidance, which is a great feature. There is too much to cover in this short review, but I would say that seniors and empty nesters would be the ideal candidates for this vehicle. It is not designed for young families with kids and a dog, and the price of admission may be a consideration. After owning this vehicle for 6 months, I can say that while it is not perfect, its operation is extremely smooth. The transmission is more like an electric vehicle, and the power is steady and adequate for lane merging on interstates.I usually achieve between 45 and 47 MPG at fill up, which is truly amazing. After one year of ownership and 15K miles, I have adapted to the touch screen over knobs, although it is debatable which is better or easier to use. The location of frequently used controls such as the steering wheel heater and rear hatch is my largest dislike, as they are not easily visible. Even the gas cap release is hard to see at night until you open the driver door. It seems that the design emphasis is on pretty rather than functional. In January, I had to make a tire change due to an alignment issue that I missed, which tore up the front end. I got away from the low rolling resistance model that was noisy, as I wanted a better all-weather aspect. This did cut the mileage by 2 or 3 MPG's.

Yes, it's a Toyota and a crossover, but we've had two and they have been some of the best cars we've ever owned. The Venza has an impressive amount of space and can fit a 77” sofa, a full-size in-ground basketball hoop, and even a very heavy 6-foot-long credenza (buffet table) in the trunk with the seats down (at different times)!!!! While it may not be the fastest car out there, it is reliable and durable. It's a unique and enjoyable car to own, and we highly recommend it. We have never had any issues with our Venza!

I purchased my 2013 Venza LE AWD last April, so I have almost had it for a year now. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. I was drawn to the exterior design when it was first released several years ago. The interior of the car is spacious all around, providing ample room for my kids in the back and the car is wider than most. As a larger individual, I appreciate the width of the driver's seat. Additionally, it has a generously sized trunk. While the electric steering may take some getting used to (feeling a little loose at first), and the ride may be a bit rougher compared to most American-made cars, it is still a great car to drive. I highly recommend taking it for a long test drive before making a purchase. It is worth noting that this car performs exceptionally well in snowy conditions.
