2012 Toyota Venza problems
The Toyota Venza is a five-passenger mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market, beginning with its introduction in 2008 and now in its second generation — with a hiatus for model years 2018–2019.
The first-generation Venza was based on the XV40 series Camry platform and marketed between 2008 and 2017 — and shared the platform with the AL10 series Lexus RX. The second-generation model is a rebadged Japanese-market XU80 series Harrier and has been sold since September 2020.
The name "Venza" is a mix of "Venture" and "Monza."

Common 2012 Toyota Venza problems
The Toyota Venza, introduced in 2009, has been a popular choice for those seeking a stylish crossover with a spacious interior and substantial wheels. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints:
- Engine Problems: Engine troubles are one of the most common problems reported by Toyota Venza owners. These issues include excessive oil consumption, engine stalling, misfires, and loss of motive power. The root causes of these problems can be defective sensors, dirty air filters, and worn-out spark plugs. Inadequate engine maintenance is also a significant factor contributing to these problems.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are prevalent, especially in the first-generation Venza, produced between 2008 and 2015. Reported issues include delayed shifting, grinding during acceleration, unstable ride quality, weird noises, a burning smell coming from the engine bay, and outright failure. These issues can be caused by worn-out or damaged transmission components, low transmission fluid levels, or faulty sensors.
- Faulty A/C System: Issues with the air conditioning system are another common problem reported by Toyota Venza owners. These problems include diminished airflow, hot air blowing from the vents, and unsettling odors coming from the vents. These issues can be caused by overcharged or low refrigerant, clogged cabin air filters, dirty condenser or evaporator coils, compressor malfunction, and underperforming blower motors.
- Interior Accessories: Sunroof, moonroof, and broken interior components are the biggest faults with the inside of the Toyota Venza. These issues can be caused by faulty components, wear and tear, or manufacturing defects.
- Steering Troubles: Some Toyota Venza owners have reported rattling during steering, while others have reported that the car drifts and whines as they turn. These issues can be caused by loose components, worn-out steering components, or alignment problems.
- Brake Faults: In earlier models, the brakes wore out far before the average lifespan. Others reported needing to pump their brakes to stop. These issues can be caused by worn-out brake components, low brake fluid levels, or faulty brake sensors.
- Windshield Cracking and Visibility Problems: Many Venza owners have reported issues with windshield cracking, which can be caused by impact damage, extreme temperature changes, or low-quality glass. These issues can affect visibility and safety while driving.
These are some of the most commonly reported problems with the Toyota Venza, based on owner complaints. Regular maintenance and servicing can help avoid many of these issues. Toyota has also issued recalls related to some of these problems.

- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: ON A BRAND NEW 2012 TOYOTA VENZA, PURCHASED NEW WITH 12 MILES ON IT, IN MARCH OF 2012, THERE IS COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF RUST ON TOP OF THE PAINT ON THE HOOD, FRONT BUMPER, AND SURROUNDING SIDE PANELS, DOORS, HATCH, AND BACK BUMPER. NOTE, THE MAJORITY OF THE RUST IS EVOLVING ON TOP OF THE PAINT, WHERE NO BARE METAL IS EXPOSED. IT CAN BE BUFFED OFF, BUT THIS ONLY TEMPORARILY SOLVES THE PROBLEM, AS THE RUST CONTINUES TO GROW, EVEN AFTER REMOVAL. ON THE FRONT BUMPER AND HOOD, THERE ARE LARGE RUSTING SPOTS WHERE SMALL CHIPS EXPOSING METAL, LESS THAN 1CM (CONSIDERED TO BE FROM GRAVEL) EXIST. FOR VISUAL AFFECT, IT LOOKS AT THOUGH SOMEONE DIPPED A LARGE PAINT BRUSH IN ORANGE PAINT AND SPLATTERED/SPECKLED IT OVER THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. *TR
AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-12-23
- VIN: 4T3BA3BB1CU
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: NO INCIDENT, JUST A SAFETY QUESTION. I PURCHASED THIS 2012 VENZA A FEW DAYS AGO AND WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THAT THE FRONTAL PASSENGER CRASH TEST WAS 2 STARS (OUT OF 5). FOR 2013 IT WAS 4 STARS FOR THE SAME TEST. I AM TRYING TO DETERMINE WHETHER THIS CAR (VIN NUMBER) WAS MADE BEFORE OR AFTER TOYOTA MADE SAFETY MODIFICATIONS THAT LED TO THE 4 STAR FRONTAL PASSENGER RATING. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS NOT HELPFUL AND SUGGESTED CONTACTING NHTSA. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR ME AS I CARRY MY GRANDCHILDREN IN THIS CAR AND IF THERE IS A SAFETY CONCERN IT WILL HAVE TO BE RETURNED. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. PS - I SENT THIS NOTE YESTERDAY BUT INCLUDED THE WRONG VIN. THE VIN ENTERED ABOVE IS NOW CORRECT. *TR
STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-12-27
- VIN: 4S3BH665116
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT; JUST A QUESTION. I HOPE THAT YOU CAN POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I PURCHASED THIS 2012 TOYOTA VENZA FROM A DEALER WHO CLAIMED EXCELLENT SAFETY RATINGS. BUT I SEE THAT THE 2012 VENZA PASSENGER FRONTAL CRASH RATING IS ONLY 2 STAR. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER WHO TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WAS MADE AFTER THE SAFETY WAS IMPROVED (IT IS LISTED AS 4 STAR FOR THE 2013 MODEL), BUT COULD NOT SUPPORT HIS CLAIM THAT MY CAR WAS 4 STAR RATHER THAN 2 STAR. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME AS I CARRY MY GRANDCHILDREN AND WOULD NOT ACCEPT A 2 STAR RATING. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE TO FIND OUT IF THIS VIN WAS BEFORE OR AFTER THE SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS WERE MADE AND THEY COULD NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION, AND WOULD NOT REFER ME ON TO SOMEONE WHO COULD. CAN YOU DETERMINE IF THIS CAR HAS A 2 STAR OR A 4 STAR FRONTAL PASSENGER SIDE CRASH RATING (OR REFER ME TO SOMEONE WHO COULD FIND OUT)? I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE THIS HELP - OTHERWISE I WILL BE FORCED TO SELL THIS CAR. MY THANKS IN ADVANCE. *TR

- Summary: I PURCHASED THE 2012 VENZA IN JUNE OF 2012 WITH HIGH HOPES. THE OPTIONS AND LOOK WERE PHENOMENAL. HOWEVER, THERE IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. IN OCT. OF 2012 THE REAR PASSENGER WINDOW BURST WHILE DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY. TODAY, 05/13/13, I STARTED THE CAR AND PUT IT IN REVERSE AND THE REAR WINDOW SHATTERED. MY CONCERN NOW - I HAVE A SUNROOF AND PANORAMIC WINDOW WHICH I AM CONCERNED WILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUES. TOYOTA NEEDS TO UP THEIR EXPECTATIONS - JUST BECAUSE THEY PURCHASED GM DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN LOWER THE STANDARDS. *TR
2012 Toyota Venza recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2012 Toyota Venza.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW:CURTAIN
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2009-2015 Venza vehicles. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) wiring may become damaged with regular use of the driver-side door.
- Consequence: Damaged wires may cause the air bag sensor to become inoperable, preventing the deployment of the side and curtain air bags on the driver side and increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the driver-side front door wire harness, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 19, 2021. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 21TB01/21TA01.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.
- Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
- Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Venza. It's actually the 4th Toyota I've owned, and I have to say, it's definitely my favorite. I've been really impressed with how well it handles in deep snow - it's made driving in the winter so much easier! Plus, it's perfect for weekend trips to the lake or just running errands around town. I've only had to replace the tires twice in the 110,000 miles I've put on the car, but I'm pretty serious about rotating and caring for them. I've also replaced the brakes and battery, but other than that, it's been really low maintenance. I know some people have complained about the interior, but I think it's just fine for an everyday car. Overall, I'd definitely recommend the Venza to anyone looking for a reliable and practical vehicle. Let me know if you have any questions!

I bought a 2010 Venza V6 2wd with approximately 20k miles on it in the summer of 2010. It's been a great car for me! I've put a little over 98k on the odometer since then and I haven't had any problems or issues at all. As someone who loves cars, I used to trade every year, but I realized that was just too expensive. That's why I wanted a car that I could keep for at least 150k miles and still look good, and I definitely made the right choice with this Toyota. It has plenty of power and I'm averaging around 20 MPG between city and highway driving. I did have a cosmetic issue with one of the wheels - if you scrape a curb, the paint can start to peel off in large chunks - but other than that, I'm very happy with my purchase!

The Yokohama Parada Spec-X 420 has a treadwear rating of 194 per set of 4, and with tax in Texas, it costs $915 when installed at Discount Tire. While Goodyear offers a cheaper tire at $125 each, it has a lower tread rating and a more aggressive tread that can result in more road noise. Although the Goodyear option can be installed for under $600, it would be inferior to the Yokohamas. It's important to keep in mind that this car is a more comfortable alternative to an SUV, and therefore, the cost of its tires will usually be almost as much, if not more.

I've had the 2011 Venza for a month now and it has been an absolute pleasure to drive. What we initially liked about it has now turned into love! This car is incredibly comfortable with plenty of headroom, legroom and width. Even my three sons who are all 6'3

The v6 AWD is definitely the way to go! It's very comfortable, has excellent power, and is surprisingly economical given its size. Plus, it's exceptional on snow and heavy rain covered roads.

I love the utility and spaciousness inside the vehicle, but I have had to replace the door panels at only 30k miles because they didn't hold up. Additionally, my visor fell apart. While the inside of the vehicle is made of plastic, the seats have held up well thanks to the really nice buttery leather I had added after purchase.

We have been experiencing three issues with our 2011 Venza. Firstly, small animals are getting under the hood and into the interior of the car, mainly the glove compartment. This is due to a design flaw that exposes openings on each side of the vehicle where water drains off the windshield that are not screened to prevent this from happening. Secondly, the gas mileage is poor. We have the base 4 cylinder engine and it is not getting the posted mileage. Lastly, there are serious problems with being able to see in the rear of the vehicle, making backing up in traffic a real challenge.

Firstly, I want to say that I really like the car. It performs well and is efficient, with good pickup and an impressive MPG for a crossover (especially on the highway, averaging 26). However, there are a few things that can be frustrating. The Navigation system can be difficult to use, with many features disabled while the car is in motion. Additionally, it can be challenging to add a phone or modify contacts. Another issue is that the audio screen does not stay on for very long, which can be annoying when listening to music. Finally, the screen's angle can make it difficult to read in bright sunlight. Overall, though, I still think the car is great.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Venza! It sounds like you made a great choice in switching from your Volvo XC90. The back seat room sounds amazing - it's always great to have enough space for everyone to be comfortable. And it's even better that you don't have to have the driver's seat all the way back to get that leg room! I'm happy to hear that you're getting good gas mileage, too. Even driving around town, 24MPG is impressive! The interior sounds lovely, especially with the added leather. Thanks for sharing your experience with us - it's always great to hear from happy customers like you!

We bought our 2011 Venza brand new and have had it for six and a half years, during which we put 68K miles on it. We did experience some issues with the alarm going off for no reason, but after 6-7 repair visits (one overnight), the problem was finally resolved. Occasionally, the steering makes a whining or creaking sound. Recently, we had some trouble with the sun visors on both the driver's and passenger's side, as they wouldn't stay up or down and obstructed our view. Unfortunately, the CD player no longer works and a CD is stuck in the unit, which means we have to replace the whole audio system. Additionally, the paint on the front bumper is coming off and the clear plastic covers on the headlights have fogged over. While the mileage is not quite what Toyota claimed, we still get about 21-23 on the highway. Although the sticker price was $40k, we were disappointed with the overall performance of the vehicle. However, we recently traded it in for a new Mazda and received $12,500 for it, despite the car being in excellent condition, always serviced, no accidents, non-smoker, etc. Overall, this car was not the best we've ever owned in 50 years, but we're glad to have moved on. Lastly, we did experience some minor issues such as the seam on the driver's leather seat opening, the clips on the engine air filter being broken, and the glove compartment being misaligned.
