2005 Chevrolet Uplander problems
The Chevrolet Uplander is a minivan manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors for model years of 2005–2009, replacing the Venture and the Astro. Marketed over a single generation, the Uplander was offered in short and long wheelbase variations — each with foldable and removable second and third row seating; a V-6 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission.
Heavily based on GM's predecessor minivans, the Uplander was initially marketed with those vehicles, the Venture and Astro. The minivan and its rebadged variants, the Saturn Relay, Buick Terraza, and Pontiac Montana SV6, were manufactured at GM's Doraville Assembly and were discontinued in 2008 when GM left the minivan market, ended production and closed the Doraville Assembly plant.
The Uplander was marketed in the United States, Canada, Chile, Mexico, and the Middle East.

ONLY WAY TO GET ROLLING IS TO PUT THE AUTO TRANS LEVER TO NEUTRAL AND TWIST THE IGNITION KEY TO CRANK POSITION AND LET KEY SETTLE TO RUN POSITION. THE IGNITION SWITCH ITSELF HAS A SPRING DETENT AND IT SETS IN A POCKET AT RUN. SO THIS SWITCH HAS A SPRING THAT OVER TIME WEAKENS AND ALLOWS THE WHOLE KEY CYLINDER ANS SWITCH TO DROP OUT OF RUN AND SHUT OFF THE ELECTRICAL. SOLUTION WAS TO PUT IN A NEW SWITCH OR JUST USE A SINGLE KEY INSTEAD OF A FULL SET OF KEYS HANGING FROM THE KEY SLOT.. THE FULL REPLACEMENT OF THE SWITCH RUNS 350$, PRTS AND LABOR.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: SEVERAL TIMES SINCE PURCHASING MY 2005 CHEVY UPLANDER, THE IGNITION HAS JUST SHUT OFF. NORMALLY THIS WAS WHEN IDOLING SO I WASN'T TOO SURE. HOWEVER, IT JUST TURNED OFF WHEN I WAS DRIVING 65 MPH ON A MAJOR EXPRESSWAY IN CHICAGO. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. THIS IGNITION SWITCH IS THE SAME ONE THAT IS CURRENTLY IN THE GM RECALL, YET IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED YET. PLEASE RECALL ALL VEHICLES WITH THIS IGNITION SWITCH AS MOST VEHICLES HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECALLED. WHY WAIT ON THE RECALL UNTIL MORE PEOPLE ARE IN ACCIDENTS AND POSSIBLY DIE? IT ISN'T WORTH THE RISK.

I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THIS WAS THE SAME IGNITION AS ALL THE OTHER VEHICLES THAT HAVE BEEN RECALLED, YET THIS ONE WAS NOT ON THE LIST. LUCKILY SHE HAD HER WITS ABOUT HER AND PULLED INTO THE CENTER TURN LANE. BUT THE ISSUE PERSISTED, GENERALLY ONLY WHEN TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE OR WHEN SHIFTING THE VEHICLE INTO DIFFERENT GEARS (PARK, REVERSE, DRIVE, ETC.). IT COST ME $312 TO FIX THIS ISSUE BETWEEN PARTS AND LABOR *TR

- Summary: THERE ARE 4 RECALLS LISTED ON THIS SITE FOR MY VEHICLE. I AM CURRENTLY HAVING THESE LISTED PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE. I CALLED GM AND THEY REFUSE TO PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS DUE TO "MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY". I TOLD THEM THAT A WARRANTY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A RECALL AND THEY AGREED! HOWEVER, GM WILL NOT COVER THESE REPAIRS! I CALLED THE PHONE NUMBER GIVEN ON THIS SITE AND WAS TOLD THERE ARE NO RECALLS........ I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A GM VEHICLE AND I WILL EXPOSE THEM EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-11-01
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: IT IS DIFFICULT TO PINPOINT THE FIRST OCCURRENCE. APPROXIMATELY 1 YEAR AGO, MY WIFE MENTIONED THAT HER 2005 UPLANDER WOULD STALL AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING. SHE SAID THERE SEEMED TO BE NO PATTERN TO WHEN IT WOULD HAPPEN EXCEPT SHE WAS ALWAYS MOVING AND AFTER STOPPING IT WOULD ALWAYS RESTART. WE TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO FOUND NOW ISSUES WITH THE CAR. I STARTED DRIVING IT AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, UNTIL THE DAY I REALIZED THAT ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS TAP THE KEY AND IT WOULD TURN OFF. I PUT MY WIFE'S KEYS IN AND SLIGHTLY TOUCHED HER KEY CHAIN AND IT TURNED RIGHT OFF. I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I WAS SEEING. THEN I READ ABOUT THE GM RECALL ON KEY CYLINDERS FOR ALL THESE CARS BUILT AROUND THE SAME TIME AS MINE. I CONTACTED GM AND THEY TOLD ME OUR CAR DIDN'T QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL. I THEN READ A RECENT ARTICLE STATING THAT OUR UPLANDER HAS ONE OF THE RECALLED CYLINDERS BUT THEY DEEMED IT "SAFE" IN OUR CAR. SAFE IS COMPLETELY INACCURATE. ANY VEHICLE THAT IS SHOWING THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE FIXED AT GM'S EXPENSE. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-10-01
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TRANSMISSION HAS SHIFTED HARD OCCASIONALLY. NOW THE TRANSMISSION WHEN SHIFTING FROM FIRST TO SECOND DELAYS THE SHIFT ALMOST AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL. EVENTUALLY IT FINDS SECONDS AND CONTINUES DRIVING FINE. CHEVY DEALER SAYS "EVERYTHING IS WITHIN SPECS" BUT TO REPLACE THE "POSSIBLE PROBLEM" PART IT IS $2000 PLUS. I HAVE READ HUNDREDS OF OTHER COMPLAINS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUES. HOWEVER NO RECALL TO BE SEEN. *TR

My 2005 Chev uplander has 180k, still runs great. I have only ever done regular maintenance and replacement stuff like rotors, pads, and tires. It's been terrific!
-
I am confident in my assessment of the Uplander. Despite experiencing rust on the exterior molding (which is made of plastic), I am satisfied overall. While the miles per gallon rating is 19/26, my personal experience has been that it is a gas guzzler and I am disappointed with the mileage. However, the Uplander is comfortable and the heated seats are especially helpful for those with back problems. Additionally, the car is easy for my disabled husband to get in and out of. Although the rear seats can be difficult to put in the upright position, one area for improvement would be to increase visibility to the rear passenger side for oncoming traffic. Overall, I am confident in my evaluation of the Uplander's strengths and weaknesses.
-
A very fun and practical ride. We're glad to hear that you're enjoying your Up Lander in the great outdoors of Da UP of Michigan. It has lots of power and handles great.
-
This is our first van, and it's fantastic! The exterior is beautiful, and the interior is just as nice! I'm 6'-4
-
Well designed. LT suspension is excellent. 17

We're sorry to hear about the issues you've been experiencing with your '05 Uplander. It sounds like the outside trim has been causing some trouble, even after being replaced twice. Additionally, you mentioned a loud rattle sound under the dash and the airbag needing to be tightened. We understand how frustrating this must be. If you're ever in the market for a new vehicle, we would recommend considering the Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
Roberto Kirlin 2024-11-12
I strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle. Despite being a new purchase, it has had numerous issues including a malfunctioning stereo that required multiple services, faulty automatic doors and keyless entry, poor quality tires, and a broken back windshield wiper motor. My initial apprehension about the vehicle's cheap interior was unfortunately justified. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this vehicle to anyone.
Osvaldo Wilderman 2024-09-05
With upgraded seats and all-electric features, this vehicle is very comfortable. The auto start is a great feature. However, the power can be a bit noisy. The handling is adequate thanks to the upgraded suspension, traction control, and stability control.
Fern Harvey 2024-08-05
The car has several design flaws that can cause inconvenience and safety hazards. The driver's seat does not adjust low enough, causing blind spots and obstructed vision for taller drivers. The lack of armrests causes passengers to fall over during turns, and the cup holders are not secure enough to hold cups in place. Additionally, the sliding doors pose a safety risk as they can close unexpectedly, potentially causing injury. In a previous accident, the OnStar system did not activate and the airbags did not deploy. These issues need to be addressed to ensure the safety and comfort of the driver and passengers.

I recently filed a complaint with BBB regarding my GM van. Unfortunately, it has been in the shop numerous times since I purchased it, with 5 visits for the same issue. I have found GM's customer service to be lacking, and it seems they do not prioritize consumer satisfaction. As a result, I have decided to never purchase a GM product again. I hope that GM will work with me to resolve this issue, but if necessary, I will have to demand arbitration due to Lemon Law. It's a shame that I seem to have bought a lemon.
