Common Mini Cooper 2006 problems
The Mini Cooper, introduced in 2006, has faced several common problems that have been reported by owners, which include issues with the power steering, transmission, engine cooling, exhaust, and body hardware.
Power steering issues are a prevalent problem in the Mini Cooper, with some owners reporting noisy power steering and failure of the power steering pump
Engine cooling issues have also been reported, with some owners experiencing coolant leaks and overheating engines
. The engine cooling system should be thoroughly checked during the pre-purchase inspection. The exhaust system is generally strong, but signs of damage from grounding should be examined closely.
Body hardware issues are also common, with some owners reporting slow-opening and closing windows, locks, and latches, as well as tailgate and trunk or hatch problems.
In summary, the Mini Cooper has several common problems that owners should be aware of before purchasing. These issues include power steering problems, transmission issues, engine cooling problems, exhaust issues, and body hardware problems. A thorough pre-purchase inspection should be conducted to ensure that the vehicle is in good working condition and that any potential issues are identified and addressed before purchase.
What is the problem with 2006 Mini Cooper?
The Mini is generally a solid performer, but there are a couple of known problems areas. The power steering is noisy, and there are reports of the failure of the power steering pump. The CVT transmission could be troublesome and should be carefully checked by someone experienced with this type of transmission.
Is 2006 a good year for Mini Cooper?
Although the 2006 Mini Cooper can be rather slow in base trim, it has all of the things that made it so popular in the first place: an accessible price, miniature dimensions for urban convenience and fun -- in both its style and its go-kart handling.
What is the most common problem with Mini Cooper?
Issue #1: Engine Overheating in Mini Cooper S (2007-2010)
Oil cooler leaks have also been reported on some vehicles. These problems cause the engine to gradually overheat, leading to coolant loss and severe damage if left unchecked. Head gasket failure is a common result of the engine overheating in the R56 Cooper S.
What year is bad for Mini Cooper?
According to Consumer Reports surveys, Mini Cooper released from 2006–2012 is considered the worst years. Having said that, there have been problems in the earlier 2000's as well. First and second-generation MINI's had quite a few problems, of which the most significant was the transmission malfunction.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-18
- VIN: WMWRE33556T
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: BMW issued a Recall 15V-205 Safety Recall, to cover the Airbag sensor in the passenger seat of my vehicle, a 2006 Mini Cooper S. The failure error was in the airbag sensor in the passenger seat, and the system warned of potential hazard with the passenger airbag. My car had a recall fix in 2018 for this fault. Now some 4 years later the same fault has arisen in the same sensor and system. I returned to BMW Mini who carried out the previous recall to have this fixed again. They said that while their repairs and parts generally carry an 8-year warranty, they do not warrant Recall repairs. They wanted over $2,000 to fix this issue. As this is a repeat of the original fault, and the car has under 100,000 miles I believe it should be covered, as their repair and or part has again failed. The date below is when I took it for the recall and was refused the warrenty repair.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-06
- VIN: WMWRC33506T
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The electro-hydraulic power steering system stopped working on my 2005 Mini Cooper. The was a recall for 2002 to 2005 mini power steering pump failures but the problem continued thru 2011 because the fix that mini Cooper came up with was inadequate. The essentially put a band-aid on the problem and left car owners holding the bag. I, in fact, had the auxiliary pump that mini came up with replaced and the power steering problem continued because their fix was no good. I have an appointment with the Mini Cooper dealership to look at my car in about 2 weeks. They've told me that I'm not covered by the recall even though they ordered a recall of 86,000 cars for the problem in 2015. Not having power steering in any vehicle is very dangerous. The problem first occurred and remains after 2 years. The problem was reproduced by an independent repair service that I have used for years.

APPARENTLY AFTER READING ONLINE QUITE A BIT THIS IS A PROBLEM AND THERE IS NO RECALL OR EVEN A CAMPAIGN OR BULLETIN. THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR. DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUE ALONE I'M FRANKLY SHOCKED. APPARENTLY BMW DEALERS ARE CLEANING UP DUE TO THE EXPENSE OF THE REPAIR. I'M LOOKING AT A MINIMUM OF $1500. - Summary: POWER STEERING PUMP PROBLEM FOR MINI COOPER R50 BOUGHT MY R50 PRE-OWNED 125000 KMS ON THE ODO FROM A DEALERSHIP(NOT A MINI DEALERSHIP) AS A PRESENT FOR MY DAUGHTER IN MARCH 2019. I ALREADY KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG. OBSERVED A LEAK IN THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR. DEALER SUPPOSEDLY FIXED THE PROBLEM BY REPLACING SOME HOSES. AFTER A MONTH, I TRIED STARTING THE CAR UP AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. I WAS LUCKY TO STILL BE AT HOME THAT TIME. RECHARGED THE BATTERY AND STARTED THE CAR. TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND NOTICED A SOUND. TRACED THE SOUND TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP NOT TURNING OFF EVEN IF THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY SO IT WILL NOT DO A FULL DISCHARGE. BOUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT I PURCHASED IT FROM AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE ISSUE WAS WITH THE PS PUMP. DID RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A COMMON ISSUE RELATED TO THIS PUMP ALREADY AND BMW HAS OFFERED EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE PUMP AND PERIPHERALS LIKE HOSES AND RESERVOIR COVERING 2003 TO 2005 MODELS DUE TO THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS AND POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC ISSUES A FAILED PUMP CAN BRING. I ASKED THE LOCAL BMW SERVICE CENTER IF I COULD AVAIL BUT THEY SAID MY VIN WAS NOT PART OF THE COVERAGE. I NEEDED THE CAR TO WORK AND I WANTED IT DONE RIGHT SO I HAD THEM REPLACE THE PUMP. THIS COSTED ME 1500 CAD++ I BELIEVE THAT THIS SHOULD STILL BE COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY BECAUSE THE SYMPTOMS ARE THE SAME AND THAT THE PUMP IS CONFIRMED TO BE AN ORIGINAL BY THE MINI SERVICE AND MAY VERY WELL STILL BE THE SAME ONE FROM THE PREVIOUS MODELS AND BMW SHOULD OWN UP TO THIS.

Mini Cooper 2006 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the Mini Cooper 2006.
- Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 MINI Cooper and Cooper S vehicles manufactured January 5, 2005, to November 28, 2006, and 2005-2008 MINI Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Convertible vehicles manufactured January 5, 2005, to July 31, 2008. Due to manufacturing, installation, and exposure issues, the front passenger seat occupant detection mat may not function properly and, as a result, the front passenger air bag may not deploy in a crash.
- Consequence: An improperly functioning mat may cause the passenger frontal air bag to be inactive when the seat is occupied, and in the event of a crash, the air bag will not deploy, increasing the passenger's risk of injury.
- Remedy: MINI will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupant detection mat, free of charge. The recall began on October 12, 2015. Owners may contact MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

I've only had it for a week, but I absolutely love it! It's definitely the cutest thing on the road. The car drives like a dream and hugs the road tightly, even without the Dynamic Stability Control or the Sport Suspension. The Harmon Kardon stereo is amazing, you can even hear piano jazz at 65 miles an hour with the top down. Power windows and top are standard, and you can even put the top down with the remote! The warranty covers all service for 3 years, and the 'Ultimate' plan covers tire and windshield damage too. The only minor drawbacks are the backseat leg room and the tiny trunk, but if you're not too fussed about those things, this car is perfect for you!

I purchased my 2006S in October 2010. It gets around 27 mpg in the city and 30-34 mpg on the highway. The sunroof can be quite hot as there is no shade, but I am having it limo tinted. The performance is great, but the ride is quite stiff and potholes feel like craters. However, it has great handling and is fun to drive. The oil change at the Mini dealer is over $100, but it holds its resale value well. I had to buy a bra for it as the front attracts all rocks. Even though Mini dealers are few and far away and costly, I feel like a kid again at 65! It turns heads wherever I go, especially since it's bright red. However, I would recommend getting rid of the run-flat tires, but then you have no spare.

Congratulations on your purchase of the 06 JCW! It's great to hear that you have no regrets and that you're enjoying the driving experience. While the ride may be on the rough side and there may be some noise from the wind and a/c, it's good to know that the car's reliability has been on par with your previous BMWs. The JCW's limited slip differential, aero body kit, and brakes certainly make a noticeable difference in cornering compared to the standard S. Thank you for the tip about dark colors for guys, it's always helpful to have insider knowledge. Enjoy your ride!

Your car sounds amazing! I love that you have the Cooper Convertible in Purple Haze. It must be so much fun to drive on both the street and the highway. It's great that your students think it's an awesome car and always want to go for rides. Even your son was surprised to find out that it attracted a lot of young women asking about the 'Italian Job' car. It seems like your car is a real conversation starter!

The Mini Cooper S with JCW tuner kit is a tight, fast pocket rocket that loves to be thrown into tight corners. The fun factor is definitely a 10!

I purchased this car almost a year ago for $11,000. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the brakes and rotors ($300), as well as the supercharger ($2,200). Additionally, a full synthetic oil change costs around $80, and it can be difficult to find a quick oil change place that will service this car. While the car is visually appealing and sporty, it sits low to the ground and can be challenging to exit, especially for taller individuals. It is also prone to scuffing on the bottom when encountering bumps or uneven surfaces, which can be frustrating. Overall, I would not recommend this car unless you are prepared to invest a significant amount of money in maintenance and repairs.

We really enjoy driving the '06 Mini Cooper S! If you're looking to enhance the driving experience, you might consider adding a stiffer rear sway-bar. However, we have had some challenges with Mini's customer service and reliability. Despite these issues, we believe that the Mini Cooper S is a great car. We did experience some trouble with the passenger seat air bag sensor cycling on and off, which is a safety concern. We recommend exploring other options if you're in the market for a new car.

I had some trouble with my previous car, unfortunately. Despite purchasing it from a reliable dealer, it spent over 30 days in the shop for the same issue four times. The car had a tendency to misfire, causing a loss of power, and the sensor lights, such as the DSC, would come on without reason. Additionally, the digital gauge for average gas consumption would read 99.9 even when the car was at a standstill. The central lock also had a tendency to sporadically unlock the passenger door when the key was removed. Thankfully, the dealer bought the car back and I am now driving a 2007 VW GTI, which I believe is a better value for the money. The only thing I miss is the character of the MINI, even though it was not as reliable.

Our MINI has been with us since May '06, and it has been a perfect city car due to its ability to park anywhere. It has great power and can easily accommodate two men and a dog. However, we have been disappointed with its fuel efficiency, as it is only getting 14 mpg in the city, even after the break-in period. We have taken it to the dealer for inspection, but they insist that nothing is wrong and that low mileage is typical for this model. Despite this, we still believe that our MINI should be more fuel-efficient, especially since it is marketed as a car that

I've been driving my MINI Cooper S for about 9 months and it's been a great experience. Although, I did have to have the transmission replaced by the dealer due to a faulty flywheel design. Overall, I would definitely recommend the car. However, it's important for potential buyers to be aware that there may be some quality issues to deal with.
