1982 Mazda Rx7 problems
The Mazda RX-7 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, rotary engine-powered sports car that was manufactured and marketed by Mazda from 1978 until 2002 across three generations, all of which made use of a compact, lightweight Wankel rotary engine.
The first-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the SA (early) and FB (late), is a two-seater 2-door hatchback coupé. It featured a 12A carbureted rotary engine as well as the option for a 13B rotary engine with electronic fuel injection in later years.
The second-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the FC, was offered as a 2-seater coupé with a 2+2 option available in some markets, as well as in a convertible body style. This was powered by the 13B rotary engine, offered in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms.
The third-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the FD, was offered a 2+2-seater coupé with a limited run of a 2-seater option. Some markets were only available as a 2-seater. It featured a sequentially-turbocharged 13B REW engine.
More than 800,000 RX-7s were manufactured over its lifetime.

Common 1982 Mazda Rx7 problems
The Mazda RX7 1982 is a popular sports car known for its unique rotary engine and handling capabilities. However, like any other vehicle, it has its own set of common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most common issues with the Mazda RX7 1982:
- Idling problem: Another common issue with the Mazda RX7 1982 is poor idling. This problem is caused by a malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). If you are experiencing erratic idling, where the revs are not remaining constant, then this is the most likely cause. To resolve this issue, you will need to remove the TPS, clean it, and then refit it to the vehicle. You may also need to adjust the sensor slightly to fix the problem.
- Suspension problems: The Mazda RX7 1982 is known for its handling capabilities, but suspension problems can affect its performance. If you are hearing a knocking noise coming from the suspension, it is most likely caused by the rear suspension bushes failing. This knocking noise will be most noticeable when driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces. To resolve this issue, you will need to replace the rear suspension bushes.
- Door trim problems: The trim around the inside of the door is prone to breaking in the Mazda RX7 1982. This trim is known for being poorly made and flimsy. If you have a broken handle, storage pocket, or damaged trim, you will need to replace the broken parts to resolve the issue.
- Electric radio antenna failure: One of the most common issues reported by owners of the Mazda RX7 1982 is the failure of the electric radio antenna. This issue is relatively cheap and easy to replace, but it can be a nuisance if you rely on the radio for entertainment during your drives.
- Motor rebuild: If the Mazda RX7 1982 has been sitting in a garage for a long time, it may require extensive repairs, including a motor rebuild. This is because the rubber hoses and vacuum lines, brake calipers, cylinders, and lines may need to be replaced. Additionally, the carburetor may need to be rebuilt.
- Flooding: If the Mazda RX7 1982 has been flooded, it may require deflooding. This process involves taking out the two bottom spark plugs and cranking the engine for a few seconds to spit out any gunk in the engine. After cleaning the spark plug holes and reinstalling them, you can try to start the engine again.
In summary, the Mazda RX7 1982 is a popular sports car known for its unique rotary engine and handling capabilities. However, it has its own set of common problems that owners have reported over the years, including clutch failure, idling problems, suspension problems, door trim problems, electric radio antenna failure, motor rebuild, and flooding.
Are rx7s reliable?
People mention the rotary thing quite a bit and its unique nature, but unless you want to rebuild it I don't see that it's too relevant. I've owned two RX-7's: a 1982 and a 1985. I never had any engine issues with mine in terms of components. I found it to be very reliable overall, but I liked tinkering with them.
Why is the RX-7 illegal?
Any Mazda RX-7 produced after 1995 is not allowed or is banned in the United States. This is because of the left-hand driving configuration of the vehicle. This means that if you want to own one, you have a couple of options. One is to find a used RX-7 in the United States that is a 1995 year model or older.
