1991 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 1991 Honda Civic problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1991 Honda Civic, here are some common problems with this car:

  • Persistent Brake Light Issues: Some owners experienced problems with the brake lights not turning off, even with the key out of the ignition. This issue could be linked to electrical components or the brake system.
  • Heater/AC Blower Malfunction: Complaints included the heater/AC blower not working correctly for certain settings, such as only working on specific levels. This could indicate issues with the blower motor or the climate control system.
  • No Heat Despite Blower Working: Owners reported situations where the blower worked, but no heat was produced. This could be due to problems with the heating system, such as a faulty heater core or blend door issues.
  • Intermittent Starting Problems: Some owners faced situations where the car would not start, but the engine would turn over, indicating potential issues with the ignition system or fuel delivery.
  • Climate Control Faceplate Damage: Complaints mentioned cracked climate control faceplates, which could affect the functionality of the climate control system and may require replacement or repair.
  • Idle RPM Fluctuations: Owners reported idle RPM cycling from high to low and irregular idling behavior. This could be related to issues with the idle control system or vacuum leaks affecting engine performance.
  • Dome Light Activation While Driving: Some owners noted that the dome light would turn on briefly while driving, especially during turns. This could be caused by electrical issues or faulty switches triggering the dome light.
  • Squeaky Steering Wheel: Complaints included a squeaky steering wheel, which could be due to worn components in the steering system or the need for lubrication and maintenance.
  • Squeaky Hatch: Owners reported squeaky noises coming from the hatch area of the car. This could be related to worn hatch components or the need for adjustments to eliminate the noise.

These common problems reported by owners of the 1991 Honda Civic highlight various issues ranging from starting and electrical problems to climate control and interior concerns. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnosis and repairs can help maintain the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-12-09
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I OWN A 1991 HONDA CIVIC 4-DOOR SEDAN. I WAS HAVING MY CAR WORKED ON FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY UNRELATED WHEN, ALL OF THE SUDDEN, THE AUTOMATIC SEATBELT (SHOULDER HARNESS) ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE STOPPED FUNCTIONING. IT WILL NO LONGER RUN ALONG THE TRACK WHEN MY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR IS OPENED. I AM UNSURE ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF THIS FAILURE ON ITS ABILITY TO PROVIDE SAFETY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT. I KNEW OF HONDA'S "LIFETIME WARRANTY" ON THEIR SEATBELTS AND TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT FIXED. THEY CLAIMED THAT THE WARRANTY DOES NOT ACTUALLY COVER THE NEEDED FIX DUE TO ITS LIKELIHOOD OF BEING AN ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION. AFTER THOROUGHLY READING THROUGH THE WARRANTY, IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE WARRANTY DOES NOT CLEARLY DISTINGUISH BETWEEN ELECTRICAL AND NON-ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS - THUS MY COMPLAINT. *TR

I HAVE READ SEVERAL PLACES THAT HONDA OF AMERICA IS TRYING TO CHARGE OWNERS FOR REPLACEMENT OF A SYSTEM THAT IN MY OPINION FOR THE SAFETY OF CAR OWNERS, SHOULD NOT FAIL IN THE LIFETIME OF THE CAR. AND IF IT DOES FAIL I FEEL THAT HONDA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING OR REPAIRING THE AUTOMATIC RESTRAINT SYSTEM ON ITS VEHICLES. *TR

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-15
  • VIN: 1HGED3641ML
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I TOOK MY HONDA IN TO HAVE RETRACTABLE SEAT BELT SYSTEM CHECKED OUT BY HOLMES HONDA, CLIVE, IOWA. PROBLEM IS THE SEATBELT WARNING LIGHT FLASHING AND BUZZER GOING OFF, AND TENSIONERS NOT WORKING PROPERLY DRIVERS SEAT BELT FEELS LOOSE, DOESN?T TIGHTEN WHEN BRAKES APPLIED. I HAD MENTIONED TO SERVICE MANAGER THAT ON THE ALLDATA WEBSITE FOR THAT YEAR OF VEHICLE FRONT SEAT BELTS WAS A RECALL ISSUE, AND THAT ALSO IN MY RESEARCH I HAD FOUND THAT HONDA CORP DOES WARRANTY THEIR "SEAT BELT SYSTEM" FOR LIFE OF VEHICLE. WHEN I PICKED CAR UP, SERVICE MANAGER STATED THEY WOULD NEED LOTS OF SERVICE DIAGNOSTICS TO PINPOINT PROBLEM AND THAT IF I WANTED IT FIXED RIGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE AN EXPENSIVE FIX. I DON?T FEEL I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC, AND PARTS WHEN IT SHOULD BE COVERED BY HONDA. SERVICE MANAGER DID STATE THE SEAT BELTS ARE WARRANTIED THROUGH HONDA BUT THAT ANY ELECTRICAL COMPONENT THAT IS PART OF SYSTEM IS NOT WARRANTIED. I STATED HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF VEHICLES THAT ANY ELECTRICAL COMPONENT OF THE SEAT BELTS, IS PART OF THE SEAT BELT "SYSTEM". WHAT I NEED IS ADVICE ON HOW TO GET SEAT BELT SYSTEM FIXED AND WHETHER HONDA CORP SHOULD COVER ALL CHARGES. AS IT IS NOW WE DON'T FEEL SAFE IN VEHICLE AND I?M UPSET A DEALERSHIP WOULD COMPROMISE SAFETY OVER TAKING CARE OF A CUSTOMER RIGHT.

SEAT BELTS,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-03-20
  • VIN: JHMED3657MS
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: THE AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT ON MY 1991 HONDA CIVIC FAILS TO CLOSE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. IT IS STUCK IN THE "OPEN" POSITION INTERFERING WITH DRIVING AND NOT PROVIDING ANY SHOULDER RESTRAINT. THE COMPONENT THAT RIDES ALONG THE FRONT DOOR TRACK WHERE THE SEAT BELT OPENS AND CLOSES WILL NOT MANUALLY MOVE ALONG THE TRACK. IT APPEARS, THIS IS THE WAY THE SEAT BELT IS CONSTRUCTED, IT CAUSES TENSION OR PULLS ON THE COMPONENT THAT SLIDES ALONG THE DOOR. THAT MAY CAUSE AN OBSTACLE TO MY SEAT BELT CLOSING. I PREVIOUSLY HAD A FAULTY DOOR LATCH ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, WHICH I HAD REPLACED WITH A NEW DOOR LATCH, AT MY OWN EXPENSE. THE DOOR LATCH FAILURE WAS MAKING THE SEAT BELT OPEN AND CLOSE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. THE OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE SEAT BELT ALSO DAMAGED THE SUN VISOR. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR WITH SUCH A FLAKY SEAT BELT AND WOULD LIKE HONDA TO REPAIR THIS DEFECT ACCORDING TO THE TERMS OF THE WARRANTY. *JB

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-08-30
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JHMEE285XMS
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC AT A LIGHT BEHIND ANOTHER CAR WHEN MY CAR WAS REARENDED. THOUGH I WAS WEARING BOTH SEATBELTS (SHOULDER AND LAP), THE SHOULDER BELT FAILED TO LOCK UP WITH THE IMPACT AND I WAS THROWN AGAINST THE STEERING WHEEL, FRACTURING MY STERNUM. OF THE THREE CARS REARENDED, I SUFFERED THE ONLY INJURY. THE SEATBELTS ARE WARRANTED FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR, YET HONDA REFUSES TO ADMIT THAT THERE WAS ANY FAILURE, HAS NOT CONDUCTED ANY MEANINGFUL TEST OF THE SEATBELT FAILURE AND REFUSES TO HONOR THE WARRANTY AND REPLACE THE SEATBELTS. HONDA WOULD NOT COME TO AN ARBITRATED SETTLEMENT WITH THE CA DEPT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS OTHER THAN OFFERING ME A $100.00 DISCOUNT ON THE FULL PRICE OF BELTS AND INSTALLATION. I WANT HONDA TO HONOR ITS WARRANTY AND PAY FOR THE FULL REPLACEMENT OF THE BELTS. THOUGH THE CAR HAS OVER 150,000 MILES, IT IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION AND IS OTHERWISE RELIABLE.*AK

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE HOOD LATCH FAILED CAUSING THE HOOD TO FLY OPEN ON THE FREEWAY AND SLAM INTO THE WINDSHIELD. ON BOTH OCCASIONS THE WINDSHILED WAS BROKEN. ON THE SECOND OCCASION THE IMPACT WAS SO GREAT IT COMPLETLEY SHATTERED THE WINDSHIELD AND KNOCKING THE REAR VIEW MIRROR OFF THE BODY OF THE VEHICHLE. ON BOTH OCCASIONS I HAD TWO PASSENGERS WITH ME. I HAVE SINCE THEN SEEN ABOUT 20 OR MORE 1991 HONDA CIVICS WITH REPLACED HOODS AND LITTLE OR NO DAMAGE TO THE BODY OF THE VEHICHLE, THUS LEADING ME TO BELEIVE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER 1991 HONDA CIVIC OWNERS.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-06-30
  • VIN: JHMED364XMS
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: MY PASSENGER SIDE SEATBELT BEGAN RETRACTING IF I WOULD BRAKE SUDDENLY, OR IF I WENT OVER A BUMP, AS THOUGH THE DOOR WAS OPEN. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO SAID IT WAS A DEFECT WITH THE DOOR LATCH AND HE HAD SEEN THIS SAME PROBLEM BEFORE. ON 7/3/01, I SPOKE WITH MICHELLE ALBERT AT AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO AT (800) 999-1009 AS THE SEATBELTS ARE WARRANTIED FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR AND THIS WAS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. SHE AGREED TO HELP ME WITH THE REPAIR JOB, FOR BETWEEN $100 AND $200. I HAD THE REPAIR DONE AND SENT HONDA A COPY OF THE BILL. THEY SENT ME A LETTER BACK SAYING THEY HAD NO RECORD OF MY CONVERSATION WITH MICHELLE ALBERT, AND THAT DUE TO THE AGE OF THE CAR THEY WOULD NOT REIMBURSE ME FOR ANY PART OF THE REPAIR. I SENT THEM ANOTHER LETTER STATING HOW DISAPPOINTED I WAS AT THEIR LACK OF CONCERN FOR MY SAFETY. I FEEL THEY ARE TRYING TO GET OUT OF THEIR SEATBELT WARRANTY ON A TECHNICALITY (I.E., THAT SINCE IT IS THE DOOR LATCH THAT IS CAUSING THE SEAT BELT TO MALFUNCTION, AND NOT THE SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY ITSELF, THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO REPAIR IT). ALSO, IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW WITH THE CAR ITSELF, SINCE MY SMALL LOCAL MECHANIC HAS SEEN THE SAME PROBLEM BEFORE, AND THAT HONDA SHOULD HONOR ITS COMMITMENT TO PROVIDE A WORKING SEATBELT FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR.*AK

Positive 1991 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Domingo Williamson 2025-01-09

I can't believe I was smart enough to buy this car! My combined city/highway mileage is still about 33 MPG. My most expensive repair has been under $500. After 14 years of moving large dogs and lots of stuff, she is beginning to show a little wear, but is as solid and peppy as ever. I'm predicting she has another 10-12 good years, which is fortunate, since 1991 was the last year Honda made this little gem.

  2. Candelario Gibson 2024-11-24

Sorry to hear about the troubles you had with your Honda in the last year. It sounds like it was quite a frustrating experience. On the other hand, it's great to hear that your Mitsubishi Mirage has been much more reliable with hardly any repairs needed at 103K miles. It's important to consider all options when looking for a new car and not just rely on brand hype. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This is a great car to drive! It's surprisingly powerful for a 1396cc engine, thanks to the DOHC and twin carburetor. It also has a good amount of torque.

I've owned this car since early 2002, when it was already old. Despite having 55,000 miles, its book value is only a paltry $1,770. However, I would never trade it in because no replacement could ever measure up.

We've owned this car for 13 years and it has been through a lot of repairs, including 3 timing belts, cv boots, 2 axles, a gas tank, a radiator, A/C repairs and 3 brake jobs. However, my wife has driven it back and forth to work (100 miles a day) without oil in the car more than once and without water in the radiator, yet the engine remained undamaged. Surprisingly, the car still managed to get us home every time the timing belt broke. This car seems to have great 'timing' on when to decide to breakdown. It's like our guardian angel!
