2023 Toyota Mirai problems
The Toyota Mirai (Japanese: トヨタ・MIRAI, Hepburn: Toyota Mirai) (from mirai (未来), Japanese for 'future') is a mid-size hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) manufactured by Toyota, and is the first FCV to be mass-produced and sold commercially. The Mirai was unveiled at the November 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of November 2022, global sales totaled 21,475 units; the top-selling markets were the U.S. with 11,368 units, Japan with 7,435 and the rest of the world with 2,622.
Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2016 model year Mirai has a total range of 502 km (312 mi) on a full tank. The MPG-equivalent combined city/highway fuel economy rating was 66 mpg‑US (3.6 L/100 km; 79 mpg‑imp), making the Mirai the most fuel-efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle rated at the time by the EPA, and the one with the longest range. In August 2021, the second-generation Mirai set a world record of traveling 1,360 km (845 mi) with a full tank of 5.65 kg (12.5 lb) of hydrogen.
Sales in Japan began on 15 December 2014 at ¥6.7 million (~US$57,400) at Toyota Store and Toyopet Store locations. The Japanese government plans to support the commercialization of fuel-cell vehicles with a subsidy of ¥2 million (~US$19,600). Retail sales in the U.S. began in August 2015 at a price of US$57,500 before any government incentives. Deliveries to retail customers began in California in October 2015. Toyota scheduled to release the Mirai in the Northeastern United States in the first half of 2016. As of June 2016, the Mirai was available for retail sales in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, and Norway. Pricing in Germany started at €60,000 (~US$75,140) plus VAT (€78,540).

Common 2023 Toyota Mirai problems
The Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), has been reported to have several problems by its owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the vehicle's range, which is supposed to be comparable to gas and diesel-powered vehicles. However, drivers have been experiencing noticeable performance and range problems. A Motor Trend driver reported that they could never get anything close to 400 miles, which is the vehicle's advertised range. Instead, they could only get 250-270 miles, and other drivers have reported similar issues. This problem appears to be due to a software and/or hardware issue or defect that substantially hinders the full driving range of the vehicle.
Another problem reported by drivers is related to the vehicle's suspension tuning and steering. The Mirai's soft suspension tuning and syrupy steering magnify the challenges associated with any electric vehicle. This can make the car feel unresponsive and unengaging, which can be frustrating for drivers who are used to more responsive vehicles.
There have also been recalls related to the Mirai's hydrogen-power system. In 2016, Toyota recalled 2,800 Mirai vehicles due to a glitch in the software that shut down the vehicle's hydrogen-power system. At the time of writing, there are no current recalls or class actions against these range issues in Toyota Mirai vehicles. However, if customers continue to report and complain about this problem, there's a high probability of a class action suit and a large recall in the near future.
It's worth noting that the Mirai is a niche vehicle, with limited availability and a high price point. It is only sold in California and through a single dealership in Honolulu, Hawaii. The car is expensive, with base prices ranging from the low $50,000s to the high $60,000s, including the destination charge. However, Toyota provides $15,000 in complimentary fuel for the car and extends its ToyotaCare free maintenance program to three years, which adds value to the car.
In conclusion, while the Toyota Mirai is an innovative and environmentally friendly vehicle, it has several problems that can affect its range and performance. These issues can be frustrating for drivers, especially given the car's high price point. However, Toyota is aware of these problems and has taken steps to address them, including issuing recalls and providing complimentary fuel and maintenance.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
- Number Of Deaths: 1
- VIN: JTDAAAAA4PA
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The warning that is supposed to appear every time the car is started that the car will auto shut off after one hour of idling never once appeared. As a result, my husband did not know the auto shut off feature existed on his car. He fell asleep in his car on a hot summer day and when the car auto shut off after an hour, he died of heatstroke. The lack of a warning coupled with the car auto shutting off after an hour was reproduced and confirmed by an independent service center. The car has not been inspected by anyone else. There were no warnings, messages, or other problems prior to my husband’s death. He was not informed of the auto shut off feature at the dealership at the time of purchase and the dashboard warning never once appeared to alert him such a feature existed. He thought it was safe to sleep in his running car. The auto shut off feature does not work properly as there was no warning on the dashboard and does not safeguard against people or animals being in the car at the one hour mark. Toyota needs to know this is a deadly feature and make some serious changes.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

I took only one for a test ride, but I must say it was one of the best cars I have ever driven. It felt more like a Lexus than a Toyota. The performance was great, handling was amazing, and the styling was out of this world. The comfort was really good, although I had a bit of trouble getting in since I'm 6ft 1, but once I adjusted the seat, it was pretty cool. The way they laid out all the controls was just as close to perfect as possible. Overall, good job Toyota, you outdid yourselves!

The car I own is the most technologically advanced one yet, with the added assurance of Toyota quality, built on a Lexus platform.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Mirai. I've noticed that there are more hydrogen stations available now, which is great news! However, like with any other EV, sometimes the charging stations can experience network errors. On a full tank, I was able to travel up to 320 miles, which is pretty impressive. That being said, for longer trips, I still prefer gas vehicles as my first choice. Thanks for listening!

The car has some issues with handling and acceleration, and there are also concerns about the promised range and refueling. It's important to note that the $15,000 fuel card may not be as valuable as it seems due to the lack of hydrogen. While Toyota promised 312 miles of range, the reality is closer to 200 miles with a full fuel tank. There have also been reports of refueling issues that Toyota has not yet addressed. Despite these concerns, it's important to consider all factors before making a decision. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

It's a great car, but unfortunately, the hydrogen supply is currently very limited. I would suggest waiting until the hydrogen supply is more reliable before considering purchasing this car. As an owner myself, I have experienced long wait times of at least 2 hours every week just to refuel. Even after waiting for that long, there is no guarantee that I will get the fuel I need. It can be frustrating, but I believe that with improvements to the hydrogen supply, this car could be a great investment.

Although the car (XLE 2023) is beautiful and super comfortable, I have been unable to achieve the promised 350-400 miles per fill. Despite my efforts to drive conservatively and even using the neutral gear when going downhill, I have only been able to get up to 280 miles. Additionally, the lack of hydrogen stations within a reasonable distance (within 5 miles) has been a major inconvenience, as the stations are often down and it can take days before I can fill up. Overall, I am disappointed with this purchase.

Does the dealership offer free tire replacement if your vehicle doesn't come with one? Also, have you noticed the lack of hydrogen at stations and the hydrogen nozzle getting stuck frequently, causing a 5-minute wait? Other than that, it's just like any other vehicle.
