The Toyota Mirai (Japanese: トヨタ・MIRAI, Hepburn: Toyota Mirai) (from mirai (未来), Japanese for 'future') is a mid-size hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) manufactured by Toyota, and is the first FCV to be mass-produced and sold commercially. The Mirai was unveiled at the November 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of November 2022, global sales totaled 21,475 units; the top-selling markets were the U.S. with 11,368 units, Japan with 7,435 and the rest of the world with 2,622.

Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2016 model year Mirai has a total range of 502 km (312 mi) on a full tank. The MPG-equivalent combined city/highway fuel economy rating was 66 mpg‑US (3.6 L/100 km; 79 mpg‑imp), making the Mirai the most fuel-efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle rated at the time by the EPA, and the one with the longest range. In August 2021, the second-generation Mirai set a world record of traveling 1,360 km (845 mi) with a full tank of 5.65 kg (12.5 lb) of hydrogen.

Sales in Japan began on 15 December 2014 at ¥6.7 million (~US$57,400) at Toyota Store and Toyopet Store locations. The Japanese government plans to support the commercialization of fuel-cell vehicles with a subsidy of ¥2 million (~US$19,600). Retail sales in the U.S. began in August 2015 at a price of US$57,500 before any government incentives. Deliveries to retail customers began in California in October 2015. Toyota scheduled to release the Mirai in the Northeastern United States in the first half of 2016. As of June 2016, the Mirai was available for retail sales in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, and Norway. Pricing in Germany started at €60,000 (~US$75,140) plus VAT (€78,540).

Common 2020 Toyota Mirai problems

The Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, has been praised for its innovative approach to sustainable transportation. However, some owners have reported issues that affect the functional range and performance of their vehicles, particularly with the 2020 model year.

One common issue reported by Toyota Mirai drivers is range anxiety, which is the fear of running out of fuel before reaching a charging or refueling station. This discrepancy suggests a possible software or hardware issue that hinders the full driving range of the vehicle.

Another issue reported by some Toyota Mirai owners is the premature failure of the climate system. One user reported that the heater in their Mirai activated on its own and would not turn off, even after several attempts to reset the system. This problem is particularly concerning in a vehicle that costs around $60,000, as it suggests a lack of quality control or durability in the climate system components.

In addition to these specific issues, the Toyota Mirai has also been criticized for its lack of accessibility for installing child seats. Several owners have reported that the Mirai's child seat latches are not immediately visible and are difficult to use, requiring significant strength to lift up the seat cushion. This issue is particularly concerning for families with young children, as it suggests that the Mirai may not be a practical option for everyday use.

Overall, while the Toyota Mirai represents an innovative approach to sustainable transportation, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of the potential issues that have been reported by some owners. These issues include range anxiety, premature failure of the climate system, and lack of accessibility for installing child seats. By being informed about these potential issues, buyers can make a more informed decision about whether the Toyota Mirai is the right vehicle for them.

Negative 2020 Toyota Mirai car reviews

  1. Zion Stehr 2024-11-16

When I purchased this car, the dealer presented me with a lot of information comparing its predicted resale value to other green technologies. Unfortunately, after 2.5 years, the car's value has significantly decreased to less than $10K, and fuel costs have risen. Despite the high fuel costs, Toyota does not offer continued support, and the car's high price tag and plummeting value make it difficult to sell. I would advise against purchasing this car until the infrastructure develops further in the next 5-10 years. Update 2/7/22 - I ended up paying the difference to get out from under the car. My rating remains the same.

As I was in between cars, I decided to rent a car through Turo. One of the options available was a 2020 Mirai, which was significantly cheaper than other sedans. The owner was very enthusiastic about the car, but I found it to be a bit unusual in appearance, resembling a cross between a Prius and a Beluga whale. Despite its unique design, the interior was comfortable and looked and felt nice. However, the car's performance was not up to par with today's standards, as it had a 153 HP motor for a 4000 pound car. I was lucky that I didn't have to refuel, as I've heard that obtaining Hydrogen fuel can be a nightmare. The car's handling was also subpar due to its narrow tires and less than aerodynamic design. Overall, I feel that the Mirai may not be the best choice for everyone, but it could still be a good option for some. It's important to consider your needs and preferences before making a decision.

  3. Akeem Connelly 2024-07-27

The Toyota Mirai has some drawbacks that we have experienced, such as being stranded due to hydrogen pumps being offline or out of fuel, and having to drive out of our way to reach inconveniently-located hydrogen filling stations. Additionally, the mileage efficiency is not as good as advertised. However, there are many other great green cars available that are more efficient and smarter than the Mirai. If you're looking for a fun and efficient green car, consider the VW e-Golf, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, Kia Soul, Hyundai Kona, or Ionic. By installing a home charger, you can avoid the inconvenience of stopping at a gas pump, whether it's for hydrogen, gasoline, or diesel.

  4. Marco Nader 2024-05-19

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced a foul odor in their Mirai? Today, I parked my car in the office garage space, which is a closed building, and when I returned in the afternoon, I noticed a strong gas odor in and around my Mirai. It was really scary! I immediately took the car to the dealership. Has anyone else experienced this before?

  5. Cleveland Krajcik 2024-04-02

Although it was a challenging situation, we were able to find a solution by purchasing a used Ford Fusion when we were unable to refuel our Mirai due to a lack of hydrogen availability. Despite the difficulties we faced, we persevered and successfully refueled our vehicle. We hope that in the future, there will be more reliable and accessible hydrogen stations to make refueling easier for everyone.

Positive 2020 Toyota Mirai car reviews

  1. Marlin Block 2024-11-11

If you have a hydrogen station nearby, this is your car! Once you've done the math, you'll realize you have a solid, heavy, and quiet commuter that Toyota pays you to drive. Plus, it's rarer than a Ferrari or Bentley on LA roads, and with every mile, you'll see your net worth rising. Few other cars can do that! However, it's not a Porsche. 16,000 miles later: PRO - I still can't get my head around the fact that I'm enjoying a free new car for 36 months! CON - Body damage from an accident is EXPENSIVE! You better have good insurance.

  2. Johnny Murazik 2024-11-06

I absolutely adore my 2019 Mirai! It was listed at $17,000 in 2023 with only 11,000 miles on it, so it was practically brand new. It even came with the $15,000 H2 card that lasts for six years, which is amazing! I live in Simi Valley and use the Thousand Oaks or Mission Hills fuel stations, so it's perfect for my daughter's commute to Moorpark College. The car is built on a Lexus chassis, so it's heavy and feels incredibly safe. The interior is also nicely finished, which is a bonus. I feel incredibly fortunate that the fueling situation works out so well for me. I do worry that I'll have to trade it in for next to nothing when my fuel card runs out, but for now, it's a fun little car!

  3. Maynard Gleason 2024-07-07

Living in a condo can make it difficult to install solar panels and electric chargers. In my case, I have a sidewalk on one side, my neighbors' two cars on either side, and a driveway behind me, leaving me with no space to put a charger. Fortunately, I have two fueling stations on my commute, which makes things easier. The only downside is that the car is larger than my previous Prius, making it harder to find compact parking spots.

  4. Gideon Shields 2024-06-21

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your car for the past week! It's great to hear that you're impressed with its performance, ride quality, and quiet interior. While fueling may be a bit pricey without Toyota's assistance, I'm glad to hear that the process was easy for you. I understand that storage space may be limited, but it sounds like the wireless phone charger in the center console is a convenient feature. Overall, it's wonderful to hear that you're happy with your outstanding and well-built car!

  5. Marcus Emmerich 2024-04-29

It's way more convenient than a battery EV and super refined.
