Toyota Mirai problems

The Toyota Mirai (Japanese: トヨタ・MIRAI, Hepburn: Toyota Mirai) (from mirai (未来), Japanese for 'future') is a mid-size hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) manufactured by Toyota, and is the first FCV to be mass-produced and sold commercially. The Mirai was unveiled at the November 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of November 2022, global sales totaled 21,475 units; the top-selling markets were the U.S. with 11,368 units, Japan with 7,435 and the rest of the world with 2,622.
Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2016 model year Mirai has a total range of 502 km (312 mi) on a full tank. The MPG-equivalent combined city/highway fuel economy rating was 66 mpg‑US (3.6 L/100 km; 79 mpg‑imp), making the Mirai the most fuel-efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle rated at the time by the EPA, and the one with the longest range. In August 2021, the second-generation Mirai set a world record of traveling 1,360 km (845 mi) with a full tank of 5.65 kg (12.5 lb) of hydrogen.
Sales in Japan began on 15 December 2014 at ¥6.7 million (~US$57,400) at Toyota Store and Toyopet Store locations. The Japanese government plans to support the commercialization of fuel-cell vehicles with a subsidy of ¥2 million (~US$19,600). Retail sales in the U.S. began in August 2015 at a price of US$57,500 before any government incentives. Deliveries to retail customers began in California in October 2015. Toyota scheduled to release the Mirai in the Northeastern United States in the first half of 2016. As of June 2016, the Mirai was available for retail sales in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, and Norway. Pricing in Germany started at €60,000 (~US$75,140) plus VAT (€78,540).

Common Toyota Mirai problems
The Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include range limitations, difficulty in installing child seats, premature failure of the climate system, and lack of access to hydrogen fueling stations.
One of the main problems with the Toyota Mirai is the range limitation. The Mirai is designed to provide a driving range comparable to gas and diesel-powered vehicles, but owners have reported difficulty in achieving the advertised range of 400 miles. A Motor Trend driver reported problems with the vehicle's range, stating that the actual driving range was closer to 250-270 miles, which is significantly less than the advertised range.
Another common problem with the Toyota Mirai is the difficulty in installing child seats. The Mirai's child seat latches are not immediately visible and next to impossible to use, making it nearly impossible to install car seats in the vehicle. This issue has been reported by several owners, with one user stating that they had to use a lot of strength to lift up the seat cushion to access the latches, and their wife couldn't do it at all.
The Mirai's climate system has also been reported to fail prematurely. One user reported that the climate system malfunctioned, and the heater activated on its own and wouldn't turn off. This issue is particularly concerning in a vehicle that costs around $60,000, as it shouldn't happen in a car of this price range.
Lastly, the lack of access to hydrogen fueling stations is a significant problem for Toyota Mirai owners. The Mirai's fuel cell technology requires hydrogen to power the vehicle, but the infrastructure to support this technology is not yet widespread. This lack of access to fueling stations has been reported to cause headaches for Mirai owners, particularly those who live far from hydrogen fueling stations.
In summary, the Toyota Mirai has several common problems that affect its functional range and performance. These issues include range limitations, difficulty in installing child seats, premature failure of the climate system, and lack of access to hydrogen fueling stations. While Toyota has issued recalls for some of these issues, such as the glitch in the software that shut down the vehicle's hydrogen-power system, other problems, such as the range limitations and lack of access to hydrogen fueling stations, remain unresolved.
Are Toyota Mirai reliable?
Depending on how often you drive your used Toyota Mirai, this could add up to quite a lot of money indeed. In addition, edmunds.com indicates that a used Toyota Mirai has an average consumer review score of 3.2 out of 5. Thus, the Toyota Mirai is not nearly as reliable as many other vehicles of the same size and class.
What are the disadvantages of the Toyota Mirai?
Limited Refueling Infrastructure
Perhaps the greatest disadvantage of owning a hydrogen fuel cell EV is the limited availability of refueling stations. If you're looking to buy a Toyota Mirai, it's crucial to consider the challenges associated with the limited availability of hydrogen refueling stations.
How long does Toyota Mirai battery last?
How long do 2022 Toyota Mirai batteries last? 2022 Toyota Mirai batteries frequently last between 3-5 years, but this is variable depending on weather conditions, driving habits, the type of battery, and more.
What is high mileage for a Toyota Mirai?
Mirai has an EPA-estimated driving range of 312 miles and an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 67 MPGe.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-06
- Number Of Deaths: 1
- VIN: JTDAAAAA4PA
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The warning that is supposed to appear every time the car is started that the car will auto shut off after one hour of idling never once appeared. As a result, my husband did not know the auto shut off feature existed on his car. He fell asleep in his car on a hot summer day and when the car auto shut off after an hour, he died of heatstroke. The lack of a warning coupled with the car auto shutting off after an hour was reproduced and confirmed by an independent service center. The car has not been inspected by anyone else. There were no warnings, messages, or other problems prior to my husband’s death. He was not informed of the auto shut off feature at the dealership at the time of purchase and the dashboard warning never once appeared to alert him such a feature existed. He thought it was safe to sleep in his running car. The auto shut off feature does not work properly as there was no warning on the dashboard and does not safeguard against people or animals being in the car at the one hour mark. Toyota needs to know this is a deadly feature and make some serious changes.

Toyota Mirai 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-07
- Date Complaint: 2022-09-29
- VIN: JTDBVRBD8KA
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: On August 1, 2022, I had only owned the vehicle for a few days, purchased July 28, 2022. Idiot dash lights came on. On the dash display it told me to take it vehicle back to the dealership, Tustin, Toyota, 36 Auto Circle, Tustin, CA 92680 [XXX], Service advisor claimed there was nothing wrong, lights come on when it low on fuel. One of those lights was the RED AIR BAG LIGHT. The dealership was negligent in faulty or no real inspection. I should never of been allowed to drive the vehicle out until the air bar light was dealt with. I drove away, thinking everything was okay but lights and warning signs were still flashing. [XXX] admitted to me that he was only really in charge of tires - nothing else. August 7th I was driving 20 miles per hr in Mission Viejo, residential neighborhood. The right air bag deployed, not accident and the engine was disabled by the computer in the car. I had the vehicle towed to my home and then on Monday, Aug. 8 had it towed back to the dealership, Tustin Toyota. Service writer [XXX] had a mechanic diagnosis; water from a drink had spilled on the passenger floor mat, which shorted out the wiring and circuit board, which caused the air bag to deploy. Had I been on the freeway going 65 mpg, I would have been dead. The engine stops where there is a deployment. It is ridiculous for a car manufacturer to not build the car correctly, and mount wiring, electrical and circuit boards in areas that will not encounter liquid or food issues and the vehicle owner should Not be held responsible for their design negligence. Burying instructions in small type in an owner’s manual that no way takes the time to read is negligent at best. The occupants SAFETY at all times should be the TOP PRIORITY. No one at Geico, my insurance company has ever heard of this happening with ANY car. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

- Date Complaint: 2022-08-09
- VIN: JTDBVRBD8KA
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Purchased this vehicle on 7/30/2022 from Tustin Toyota, 36 Auto Center Drive, Tustin, CA 92782. I also purchased an extended warranty to cover all future repairs for an additional $2,995 call 'extra care'. I had some warning lights come on after only driving the vehicle for a few days. I brought spent for hours waiting for the dealership on Aug. 1, 2022. The diagnosis was there was nothing wrong and [XXX], Advisor, told me it was normal for Mirai vehicle when it gets low on fuel for warning lights to come on. Sunday, August 7, driving at 2:15 pm PST going only 20 miles per hour, on a side street in Mission Viejo, CA, the right side air bags deployed, there was no impact, no accident. The car was inoperable as the electronics sensed there was a collision so the driving mechanism was disengaged. I had the vehicle towed to dealership on 8/8/2022 for repairs. I was there 7 am. At 4 pm. I spoke with [XXX], Advisor, and he told me because water was found on the floor mat on the passenger side, it affected wiring that is underneath the floor mat and caused a short, which caused the Air Bags to Deploy. This is a manufacturers defect to mount vulnerable wiring under a floor mat. I have two warranties on the vehicle and neither warranty wants to pay for the repairs. If all the Mirai all manufactured with this wiring under a floor mat, there needs to be a Factory Recall and this wiring needs to re reouted to avoid major accidents. If I had been driving in a major freeway, I this issue could have caused major accidents and death of myself and other surrounding drivers, as it also disengages the ability to safely drive the vehicle. The only thing that should deploy air bags is a collision - not faulty mounting of wiring under a floor mat. I need immediate investigation and action on this matter as this may affect thousands of vehicles since 2014 made by Toyota. [XXX] Phone / Text. - Summary: UNTIL TWO (2) DAYS AGO, I WAS THE HAPPY OWNER OF A 2017 TOYOTA MIRAI (VIN [XXX]). AT THE TIME OF MY INCIDENT, THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 19,700 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. ON FRIDAY 24 AUGUST 2018 AT APPROXIMATELY 1615 (4:15 PM), I WAS DRIVING MY WIFE TO THE CLEANERS. I WAS ON ALMADEN EXPRESSWAY JUST SOUTH OF THE CAMDEN INTERSECTION IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION. SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE CAR LOST POWER. THE CAR MONITOR SCREEN INSTRUCTED ME TO PULL OFF AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND TO CONTACT MY CAR DEALER. I WAS INFORMED THAT I HAD AN FC FAILURE. AFTER THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT A SMALL ROCK HAD COMPLETELY PASSED THROUGH THE RADIATOR. THE TOYOTA MIRAI IS A HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VEHICLE. THERE IS NO INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE. HYDROGEN FUEL FEEDS A FUEL CELL WHICH COMBINES THE HYDROGEN WITH FREE OXYGEN TO MAKE ELECTRICITY. THIS ELECTRICITY THEN POWERS TWO MOTORS AND/OR THE BATTERY. THE FUEL CELL REQUIRES A RADIATOR FOR COOLING. THIS RADIATOR IS THE ACHILLES HEEL OF THE MIRAI. IT IS PLACED LOW, IN FRONT, ON THE PASSENGER?S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS NO BUMPER TO PROTECT IT FROM COLLISIONS WITH CURBS. IN MY CASE, THERE IS NO PROTECTION FROM ROCKS AND GRAVEL HITTING THE RADIATOR AND DISABLING THE VEHICLE. - VIN: JTDBVRBD8HA
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: THE CHILD SEAT LATCHES FOR CAR SEATS ARE NOT VISIBLE AND PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO USE. BECAUSE OF THE DESIGN AND MATERIAL OF THE SEAT, IT TAKES A LOT OF STRENGTH AND EFFORT TO PROPERLY FIND THE LATCHES AND CONNECT THEM TO CAR SEATS. MY WIFE HAS TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO CONNECT OUR CAR SEATS TO THE LATCH SYSTEM. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH CAR SEAT SHE TRIES IT WITH, SHE IS UNABLE TO CONNECT THE LATCH BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE SEAT IS DESIGNED AND THE AMOUNT OF STRENGTH YOU NEED TO HAVE BECAUSE OF THE WAY YOU HAVE TO CONNECT THE CAR SEATS. ON MOST CARS, I CAN CONNECT A CAR SEAT IN UNDER 5 MINUTES TO THE LATCHES. SOME CARS IN A MINUTE OR LESS. WITH THE MIRAI, IT TAKES ME 5-10 MINUTES TO GET THIS INSTALLED. THE LATCHES WERE MADE MANDATORY TO ASSIST PEOPLE WITH EASE OF CAR SEAT INSTALLATION BUT THE DESIGN OF THE MIRAI HAS MADE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE AND IMPOSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO MANUVER THE SEAT AND JAM THE CAR SEAT CLIPS THOUGH THE SEAT BOTTOM.

The new 2021 model is fantastic both inside and out. I have the Limited Edition which comes with a sunroof, larger wheels, Heads-up-display and other exciting features. Toyota has taken all previous criticisms and addressed them, resulting in the best Toyota model ever. It is incredibly fast, handles corners unbelievably well, has an extremely high level of equipment, and boasts stylish and sporty good looks. It even has a sports mode for when you have the space to use it. By the way, H2 is the fuel of the future - you just might not know it yet.

There are 6 hydrogen stations near your house. Each filling only takes about 3-5 minutes. You'll hardly notice any noise in the car, and the acceleration is both stable and fast. Plus, the interior decoration and shock absorption are comparable to that of luxury cars.

I recently leased a Mirai after searching for an eco-friendly replacement for my VW TDI that was part of the emissions lawsuit. The current lease deal is fantastic, with a monthly payment of $349 + tax and just under $5,000 in total drive off, which is entirely covered by the CA clean air rebate program. Toyota also includes a $15,000 card to cover hydrogen refueling, which should be more than enough for my needs. Although insurance costs more for the Mirai than my VW, the monthly fuel savings make up for it. I chose the Mirai over an EV because I don't want to pay for electricity/charging at work, and the ability to fuel up in 5-10 minutes for a range of ~300 miles is very appealing. While hydrogen fueling stations are still sparse, they are expected to improve in 2017. The Mirai is also more fun to drive than a Prius or the new Prius Prime, with quick acceleration, a nice interior, and an exterior that has grown on me. I believe that supporting the development of fuel cell vehicles and infrastructure is a concrete action we can all take to help limit climate change. Overall, the Mirai has been a cool and easy-to-operate car that I would definitely recommend!

Toyota currently has some great deals available! I was able to get $20,000 off the list price, a $15,000 gas card for 6 years, an $8,000 federal rebate, a $4,500 state rebate, and 0% interest for 6 years. I purchased the XLE with the advanced package for $52.5k and I don't think the limited is worth the extra $20k. After all the rebates and perks, I estimate that I will only be paying $12.5k for the car itself! The ride is super smooth and the safety features are great. The cruise control even drives the car for you on the freeway, even in heavy traffic! I also love the interface, birds eye camera, and the cameras in both the front and rear. The JBL speakers are amazing and the seats are comfortable too! The only downside is that the 402 miles they claim you can drive is only true if you drive 30mph (LA traffic). It's more like a 310 mile range on a full tank. It takes about $95-$100 to fill up a tank (5.6 capacity) and I'm expecting the $15k card to last for 50k miles before I have to start paying for hydrogen myself. Hydrogen can be hard to find sometimes, so if you find a H70 station, use it (you never know when supply chains may dry up). Besides that, I love the car and I'm expecting hydrogen to be the same price as gas in 4 to 5 years or I'm in trouble! 😆

Vehicle year: 2019
We leased our 2019 Toyota Mirai in the first week of May 2019. We previously had a Nissan Leaf from 2014 to 2017. We absolutely love our new car! The car feels incredibly safe and secure, and the 'Warm White' interior is so cozy and comfortable for all four passengers. The high-quality leather seats are a real treat, and we appreciate the longer driving range compared to most other EVs on the market. We were even able to fit our full-size cello in the trunk! Of course, there are a few things that could be improved. The steering wheel is a bit heavy, especially at low speeds, and the windows could have been darker from the factory. We also found the climate control panel to be a bit distracting, as it's located quite low in the center console. Additionally, the active driver assist designed in the mirrors could have been moved more inwards, and the turn signal could be a bit louder. Finally, we wish there was more storage space and compartments inside the car, and the trunk space could be a bit deeper. However, overall we are very happy with our 2019 Toyota Mirai!

We have enjoyed almost everything about this car, but unfortunately, accessing the hydrogen fuel stations has been a challenge. When we purchased the car, we were informed that a station would be opening within six months, which would be a short distance from our home. However, a year and a half later, not only did that not happen, but the two closest stations to us, which are 20 and 30 minutes away, are consistently out of fuel. Over the past six months, we have had to be towed numerous times as we didn't have enough fuel to keep going back and forth to the stations to check if they have fuel. Although Toyota is aware of the issue and offers to pay for Uber/Lyft and car rentals ($50/Day limit), we have had to go without the car for a week on more than one occasion. Unfortunately, there is not enough hydrogen to meet demand, and there are no additional stations on the horizon. We live in Los Angeles (Burbank), so it's not like we're in the middle of nowhere. It has become unbearable, with an hour to and from a station only to find they're out of fuel, waiting days for fuel to arrive, and then having to sit in a tow truck to be towed to a station once they finally get fuel. Simply put, the situation is so bad that we're going to arbitration to get out of the lease. We wish we had never leased this car.

The Mirai has a breakthrough fuel cell technology that has positive ramifications on the environment. However, I cannot recommend this car to others due to a design flaw that causes coolant leaks. The issue arises from the way the Mirai takes in air from the front grill to supply the fuel cell with oxygen, exposing many of the internal components to the external environment. Toyota has refused to acknowledge their design mistake and has forced customers to pay for the repair, which is not covered by the warranty. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that this problem will be fixed in the design, leaving the car unprotected from any stone on the road. It is important to be aware of this widespread issue before considering purchasing the 2018 Mirai.

The Mirai is a great car overall. However, I have noticed a decrease in the total mileage range per full tank after refueling. Despite Toyota's claim of a 310 mile range, I have only been able to achieve 212 miles after 4 months of use. I have taken it to the dealer, but they were unable to find any issues. While they suggested it may be related to my driving habits, I believe it is a matter of the number of miles per full tank of fuel immediately after refueling. Have any other Mirai owners experienced a similar issue?

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Mirai. I've noticed that there are more hydrogen stations available now, which is great news! However, like with any other EV, sometimes the charging stations can experience network errors. On a full tank, I was able to travel up to 320 miles, which is pretty impressive. That being said, for longer trips, I still prefer gas vehicles as my first choice. Thanks for listening!
