The Toyota Corona (Japanese: トヨタ・コロナ, Toyota Korona) is an automobile manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota across eleven generations between 1957 and 2001. On launch, the Corona was Toyota's second-highest product in their range, just below the Crown. The Corona was marketed in the JDM at Toyota's Toyopet Store dealership channels, and the Corona was one of Toyota's first models exported to other global markets, followed by the smaller Toyota Corolla.

The Corona played a key role in Toyota's North American success. Having previously entered the North American passenger car market in 1957 as Toyopet, the company met little success, withdrawing in 1961. The company re-entered the North American market in June 1964, rebranded as Toyota, introducing its third-generation Corona with more modern technology and numerous standard features. Toyota advertised the car prominently, with the company's first television commercial featuring the Corona. The car was well received, winning the 1969 Road Test Import Car of the Year. The Corona helped boost U.S. sales of Toyota vehicles to more than 20,000 units in 1966 (a threefold increase), making the company the third-best-selling import brand in the United States by 1967. In 2014, editors at Car and Driver called the Corona one of the best Toyotas ever made, arguing that Toyota survived long enough to thrive in America because of the Corona.

By 1968, the Corona name was used on a larger platform, marketed as the Corona Mark II. The Corona itself was marketed under a numerous nameplates worldwide, including in European markets as Carinas, and a variant of the Corona was offered in various markets as the Carina. The Corona was ultimately replaced in Japan by the Toyota Premio; in Europe by the Toyota Avensis; and in Asia, Pacific markets, and the Americas by the Toyota Camry.

The nameplate corona derives from the Latin word for "crown", the sedan taking its place just below Toyota's similarly named flagship, the Toyota Crown.

Common 1981 Toyota Corona problems

The 1981 Toyota Corona is known for several common problems that affect its engine, transmission, and fuel system. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  1. Engine Problems: The 1981 Toyota Corona was fitted with a Holden 1.9-litre overhead-valve four-cylinder engine in some markets, which was prone to misfiring. If the engine is a Holden engine, the compression ratio was 8.7:1, but it's likely to be less than that now. If the engine runs well, it's recommended to continue using unleaded with an additive. However, if it's a Toyota engine, it's best to run it on regular or premium unleaded with a commercial lead replacement additive available from your servo.
  2. Fuel System Problems: The 1981 Toyota Corona was also known for fuel system problems, including issues with the carburettor and fuel pump. A faulty carburettor can cause poor fuel economy, rough idling, and difficulty starting the engine, while a faulty fuel pump can cause the engine to stall or not start at all. The fix for these issues is to replace the carburettor or fuel pump.
  3. Transmission and Drivetrain Issues: The 1981 Toyota Corona was known for transmission and drivetrain issues, including problems with the automatic transmission. The transmission can slip, shift erratically, or not engage at all, which can be caused by a faulty transmission or a problem with the engine itself. The fix for these issues is to replace the transmission or have it rebuilt.
  4. Suspension and Steering Issues: The 1981 Toyota Corona was known for suspension and steering issues, including problems with the steering and struts. The struts now have KYB shocks and a weld-on coil-over sleeve, so the ride height and camber can be set to suit the wheels. However, if the steering is not good from the factory, it can cause problems with the car's handling and stability.

It's important to note that these are common issues that affect the 1981 Toyota Corona, but not all cars will experience these problems. If you're considering buying a 1981 Toyota Corona, it's recommended to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing to identify any potential issues. Additionally, regular maintenance and servicing can help prevent these issues from occurring or becoming more serious.
