2013 Kia Soul problems
The Kia Soul is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2008. Often described and marketed as a crossover since its introduction, the Soul is a hatchback with a box proportion and tall roof, which are designed to maximize its interior space. Despite its SUV-like styling, the Soul was never available with all-wheel drive, instead it is exclusively a front-wheel drive vehicle.
The Soul first appeared in 2006 in the form of a concept model displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The production model made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. During its introduction, Kia stated that the Soul is aimed at the North American market, and targeted towards buyers in the 18 to 35-year old range.
The second-generation model was introduced in 2013 for the 2014 model year, which featured a larger exterior and interior dimensions along with a reworked chassis, while keeping its boxy styling. The Soul is currently in its third generation, which was introduced in 2018 for the 2019 model year. Since 2014, Kia has also marketed a battery electric variant as the Soul EV.
The name "Soul" comes from the homophone of Seoul, the city that hosts Kia's headquarters.

Common 2013 Kia Soul problems
The 2013 Kia Soul has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include:
- Excessive Battery Drain: Another common issue with the 2013 Kia Soul is excessive battery drain, which tends to manifest around 50,000 miles. This problem is often caused by a computer issue that stays on after the car is turned off, leading to a replacement cost of approximately $800.
- Clunky Steering Noises: The 2013 Kia Soul's steering column can become loose as it ages, resulting in clunky steering noises. The only way to fix this issue is to install a new steering column, which can cost around $750, depending on local labor rates.
- Starting Issues: Some owners have reported difficulty starting the 2013 Kia Soul, which may be due to a potential battery issue. The cause of this problem remains unclear, as many complaints do not provide specific details on the issue.
- Noisy Brakes and Premature Rotor Wear: The 2013 Kia Soul's brakes have been reported to make squeaky noises, and the rotors can wear unevenly, with some owners experiencing premature front or rear rotor failure.
- Steering Noise and Vibration: The 2013 Kia Soul's steering can make a clunking noise when turning and vibrate around the 70 mph mark. This issue is not uncommon and can be caused by a poor-quality steering coupler that wears out quickly.
- Potential Fire Risk: The 2013 Kia Soul has been associated with potential fire risks due to engine problems and faulty catalytic converters. The NHTSA has received several complaints about engine fires, with some owners reporting smoke coming from under the hood before the car burst into flames.
- Faulty Airbags: The 2013 Kia Soul has a recall related to airbag components that may detach and become projectiles upon deployment.
- Faulty Catalytic Converters: The 2013 Kia Soul has a recall for faulty catalytic converters that can overheat and cause engine failure, as well as create a fire risk. This issue is caused by a packaging design flaw that leads to high exhaust gas temperatures, damaging the catalytic converters and eventually destroying the engine internals.
These common problems with the 2013 Kia Soul can lead to higher ownership costs due to the severity of the issues and the need for costly repairs. Engine failures, in particular, are a widespread concern, with many owners reporting issues around 100,000 miles. - Summary: I cranked car letting it warm up, pulled out of my park onto main road, got approximately 300 yards to the red light, while sitting at the red light the cars idling went aradic, I opened the driver's side door and looked under the car, the catalytic converter was glowing red, solid red, I tried to pull into the store next to the red light, the check engine light came in and the car had no power when I mashed the gas, people behind me helped me push it into the store, after getting home that evening I checked and seen they had a catalytic converter recall on my car stating that the catalytic converter can catch on fire and harm the engine, I took the car to Kia south in Union city they gave us the run around stating that I had to have a new engine I told them the catalytic converter recall states that the catalytic converter will cause fire and engine damage, before even inspecting the car their tech had already made up his mind that's not what killed the engine, then started stating that my car wasn't under the recall I ask him how us that possible when it did the same thing 749.000 kia cars did, then was called a week later tech saying he couldn't do the recall cause he couldn't get the car to crank, but the tech said he did a diagnostics on I asked how if he couldn't get the car to crank, we took a mechanic to Kia with us, to look at the car ,after looking at the car, the mechanic told us this is the exact same damage that he has work on because of the catalytic converter, the tech showed us a picture on his phone stating the were metal pieces in the oil , that the car was ran out of oil, upon further inspection of his pictures the tech was caught in a lie, the picture wasn't even a picture of my car , our mechanic told the tech that this falls under the recall and Kia knows it.. Kia and the tech acknowledge my car falls under the recall but said I have more than 150.000 miles on it, so if i want it fixed it would cost $8000 dollar for new engine

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
- VIN: KNDJT2A56D7
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Steering wheel shakes violently when going over 75MPH and is extremely shaky on side streets as well. The steering wheel feels like it’s going to fall off! Got it checked out by Kia and they said the Flexible steering coupling needs repairing and it would be over $900 to do so for a part that costs less than $10! I have an extended warranty and I was told the warranty doesn’t cover this issue, but at the bare minimum it seems like it should as it feels dangerous at times to drive the car. Also, this issue should be a recall for Kia as I have seen a ton of other people with this issue! It’s a defect in the car and should be a free recall to be fixed .

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: KNDJT2A63D7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: There is a history of engine failure. The check engine light does not remain on for a diagnostic to be completed. This has been going on for about a year. One day it would run then the next day the engine would fail. It is happening more frequently such as after filling up with gas, waiting at stop lights, reversing, and DURING driving. The vehicle now will not restart when the engine fails. After investigating the failure, I related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V120000 (Engine, Engine and Engine Cooling). Kia's number for this recall is SC176. The manufacturer was notified of the failure due to the local dealership not replacing the catalytic converter due to being “out of warranty”. A case was opened and I am awaiting a response from a caseworker. I have a code in the History: P0172 code, which stands for "Fuel System Too Rich (Bank 1)". What this means in plain language is that there's too much fuel being delivered to combustion chambers on bank 1, or not enough air. Manufacturers are required to fix the problem by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund, or in rare cases repurchasing the vehicle. However, that is not what I’m experiencing rather I am being dismissed and neglected even after the engine failed on the highway going 70mph with a semi-truck behind me nearly running over me. I then had to be towed to the dealership, which was expensive. I have spent thousands of dollars in attempts to repair/remedy this problem to only recently find out that there is a related recall. Kia's number for this recall is SC176. I refuse to drive this car as it is unreliable and unsafe. Also, the recall below has still not been repaired since the Notice was received in 2023. Manufacturer Recall Number: SC284AM NHTSA Recall Number: 23V652 Recall Status:”Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available”

After 2013, CD players are no longer available. However, we have a huge collection that we are proud of. Our top priority was to make it easy for the main driver, who has a paralyzed left leg, to get in and out of the car. We are very pleased with the result.

I recently purchased a 2013 white Kia Soul+2.0L 6A for my wife, who is a teacher in our county school system. Previously, she drove a 2002 Honda Civic LX. We considered both the Honda CR-V and KIA Sportage, but ultimately she fell in love with the design and size of the Kia Soul. Although we could have waited a month for the 2014 model, she was set on the 2013 model. The car drives very smoothly with its 2.0L engine and is loaded with features such as Antilock Brake System, Auto Traction Control System (On/Off controllable), and 8 Airbags! The braking is excellent and although the gas mileage is not as good as expected, we are hopeful that it will improve with time. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase!

We are so glad to hear that your 2013 base Kia Soul has been such a reliable car for you! It's great to know that it's still driving great even after 90,000 miles. 😃👍

We've been enjoying our little car so far, although it's not without its imperfections. But then again, what car is perfect? We did encounter a couple of issues, though. Firstly, the car is equipped with 2 DC outlets just behind the transmission stick, and when we tried to unplug our cell phone charger, the whole housing came out of the dash. It's not broken, but it does seem to be made of cheap plastic. Secondly, we've never owned a vehicle with a black interior before, and we have to say it's not the most practical choice. It shows dirt right away and requires more cleaning. Despite these minor issues, we really like the vehicle.

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been experiencing with your Kia. It sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with the gas mileage, gas gauge, head unit, wheel speed sensor, ignition switch, radio, lights, and wipers. That must have been frustrating and concerning. I hope you were able to get everything resolved and that you're now enjoying a smoother ride. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

The gas mileage is not as good as I had hoped. My 2013 model does not seem to get the expected 25mpg city and 30mpg highway. During a recent trip to Orlando, I had to refuel before returning home to Ocala. However, I find the car to be reliable and great overall. Interestingly, my father's lifted GMC Sierra gets better gas mileage than my car.

If you're considering buying one of these, I would recommend taking it for a test drive on the interstate and rolling the back windows down about halfway. Unfortunately, I experienced some noise and vibration that made it difficult to hold a conversation with my passenger. I also noticed some shaking when I rolled down the driver's window about two inches while the back windows were down. After speaking with several KIA dealers, it seems that this is a known issue with some of their vehicles and cannot be easily resolved. However, they did suggest keeping the windows rolled up at high speeds. I wish I had known about this before purchasing my vehicle, but overall I still enjoy driving it.

This car has been a disappointment due to its poor mileage and quality. The steering column and injectors have already been replaced.
