The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 1993 Toyota Corolla problems

The Toyota Corolla is known for its reliability, but like any car, it can have certain issues. For the 1993 Toyota Corolla, some common problems include:

  • Randomly not starting: This problem can be caused by a parasitic draw, which is when the car's electrical system drains the battery when the car is turned off.
  • Engine performance issues in cold weather: Some 1993 Corolla owners have reported experiencing issues with their cars starting and running in extremely cold weather. This can be due to various factors, such as the fuel system freezing up or the battery losing its charge in the cold.
  • Excessive oil consumption: This issue is common in many older Corolla models, including the 1993 model. It can be caused by worn-out piston rings or valve guides, which can lead to the engine burning oil and requiring frequent top-ups.
  • Body and interior issues: Some 1993 Corolla owners have reported issues with the car's body and interior, such as dashboard cracking, trouble with locks, and rattling noises inside.

Despite these common problems, many 1993 Toyota Corolla owners have reported positive experiences with the car, praising its reliability, durability, and fuel efficiency. However, it is essential to perform regular maintenance and inspections to ensure the car's longevity and avoid potential issues.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1993-01-01
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAD A LATENT DEFECT IN THE FORM OF A CRACKED EXHAUST MANIFOLD. AS TIME PROCEEDED, THE CRACK BECAME AN ENTIRE SEPARATION OF THE MANIFOLD NEAR THE CENTER. THIS SITUATION ALLOWS POISONOUS EXHAUST GASES TO ESCAPE WHENEVER THE ENGINE IS OPERATING. THESE GASES ARE PRIMARILY CARBON MONOXIDE -- AN UNSCENTED AND DEADLY GAS -- ALONG WITH OTHERS LESS HAZARDOUS. SINCE THIS IS AN INHERENT DEFECT, EITHER IN THE DESIGN OF THE MANIFOLD OR IN THE QUALITY OF THE MANIFOLD (OR BOTH), I DEFINITELY BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD RECALL THE 1993 TOYOTA COROLLA VEHICLES WITH 1.6 LITER ENGINES AND REPAIR OR REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART. *JB

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-11-11
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: THE FUEL LINE THAT COMES FROM THE GAS TANK TO THE FUEL LINE THAT GOES TO THE ENGINE RUPTURED AT THE CONNECTOR AND STARTED LEAKING WHICH COULD HAVE BLOWN UP MY CAR. TOYOTA HAS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THEIR FUEL LINES. THERE IS A CONNECTOR WHICH JOINES THE TWO FUEL LINES AND THAT IS WHERE THE LEAK OCCURRED. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN NOW I WILL TRY TO AVOID BUYING A TOYOTA WITH THIS TYPE OF CONNECTOR. THE CONNECTOR IS EXPOSED UNDERNEATH THE CAR, AND IT SEEMS IT CAN EASILY BE BROKEN. TOYOTA DID NOT PUT ANY PROTECTION AROUND THIS COUPLER WHICH SEEMS IT CAN EASILY BE BROKEN AND BECOME A HAZARD. I HAD TO GET IF FIXED AND IT COST ME OVER $1,000.00 WHICH INCLUDED A NEW GAS TANK. WHEN I SPOKE WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE ON THIS, THEY DID NOT EVEN CARE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. THEY ARE LUCKY THAT MY CAR DID NOT BLOW UP OR CAUSE A FIRE. ONE DAY I CAME OUT AND SAW GASOLINE DRIPPING ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR, IT WAS THE FUEL LINE THAT STARTED LEAKING. THE COUPLER RUSTED OUT. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT.*AK

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1997-03-17
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 1993 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE INSIDED DOOR HANDLE BROKE ON ME AROUND 1997, AND AGAIN A ABOUT A YEAR LATER. THE HANDLE JUST BROKE IN HALF. I DID NOT REPORT THIS AT THE TIME, BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW THIS WEBPAGE EXISTED. AFTER READING ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS YOU WOULD THINK THAT TOYOTA WOULD STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND ADMIT THEY MADE DEFECTIVE DOOR HANDLES ON THEIR CARS. WHAT IS WORST YET, WAS THAT A PERSON COULD BE TRAPPED IN THEIR CAR, AND NOT GET OUT IF THEY WERE IN A CRASH OR IF SOMETHING HAPPENED. I THOUGHT TOYOTA CARED ABOUT ITS CUSTOMERS. YOU WOULD THINK THE NHTSA WOULD HAVE SEEN ALL THE SERVICE COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE AND MADE TOYOTA FIX THE DOOR HANDLES. *AK

ABOUT A COUPLE YEARS LATER MY BRAKE LIGTHS WOULD NOT WORK NOR MY PARKING LIGHTS AND TURNING LIGHTS. WELL I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER TOYOTA DEALER, AND ON THE LIGHT BULBS THERE ARE TWO SOLDER JOINTS ON THE BULB AND THEY MELTED TOGETHER CAUSING A SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THEY GOT TOO HOT, AND THEY COULD HAVE EVEN MELTED IN THE SOCKET HARNESS. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT REPLACEMENT BULBS THE TOYOTA DEALERS ARE USING BUT BUYER BEWARE. THEY HEATED UP IN THE WIRING HARNESS AND I AM VERY LUCKY THEY DID NOT CAUSE A FIRE. I HOPE THE NHTSA LOOKS AT THE BULBS THAT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS ARE USING AND AT LEAST MAKING SURE THEY ARE SPECT OUT FOR HEAT BUILDUP INSIDE THESE PLASTIC SOCKETS WHICH COULD MELT.*AK

Negative 1993 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Kenyon Towne 2024-11-22

Hi there! I'm the original owner of a '93 Corolla with 170K miles on it. I paid the car off over ten years ago and since then, I've only had to replace the transmission, water pump, front engine mount, and a couple of regular items like brakes and tires. I also replaced the inside door handle a couple of years ago, and luckily the dealer still had the part in stock. All in all, I've only spent about $50 a month on maintenance since paying off the car. It's been a pretty inexpensive car to own and maintain!

  2. Alden Beatty 2024-11-14

This car is pretty decent. I've owned it for 2 years and put about 15k miles on it. I bought it with 120k miles and it has proven to be reliable. It may not handle well in the rain and cornering is just okay, but even at slower speeds, it feels like the tires are going to buckle. On the bright side, it does get decent mileage. However, it is not consistent on pickup. Sometimes it will go, but other times, you have to keep your foot to the floor. The braking is not very good either. My Chevy Cavalier definitely drives and handles better and is more fun to drive, but unfortunately, it broke down at only 110k miles.

  3. Jeremy Morar 2024-11-02

Hey there! This was my car in college. It drove really well, required very little maintenance, and never really needed any service.

  4. Gunnar Sporer 2024-10-28

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your '93 Corolla! It's amazing that you've been able to keep it running so well for over 12 years and 238,000+ miles. Your dedication to regular maintenance and upkeep is truly impressive. It sounds like you've taken great care of your car and it has served you well. I hope you find the perfect Matrix for your needs and have an equally positive experience with your new vehicle. Thank you for sharing your story!

  5. Grayce Bartell 2024-06-03

I bought my Toyota at 117,000 miles. Although the driving quality is good, I have experienced some issues with the brakes on this particular vehicle. I had a full brake job done just one month after purchasing it, and then the rear brakes were done in January. Unfortunately, the air conditioning stopped cooling this summer, and in September I had to replace the master cylinder. The driver's side caliper also needs to be replaced. The only engine work I've had done is a valve cover gasket and a thermostat to ensure heat in the winter. I've seen a maximum of 24 mpg and as low as 18 mpg, but regular maintenance has been inexpensive. Overall, the car is excellent at 147,500 miles.

Positive 1993 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Juvenal Schuppe 2024-11-11

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new in 1993 and it has been the best investment I've ever made. I've taken it on some amazing road trips, from New England all the way to California, down to Florida, and even up to Quebec City and back. The best part is that I've never had any issues with it while on the road, even after seventeen years! Of course, as with any car, I've had to replace a few things recently like the water pump, struts, radiator, and gas tank, but that's just a part of getting older, isn't it? My only disappointment is that Toyota decided to discontinue the wagon model in Europe and replace it with the less attractive Matrix. Nonetheless, with a bike rack on top and plenty of space in the rear cargo area, I always feel prepared for any adventure!

  2. Tevin Krajcik 2024-10-27

I recently purchased this car from a wholesaler for $1,800.00 plus tax, hoping to use it as a work car. Although it needed a set of tires, a good detailing, and a hub-cap, I was pleasantly surprised by its quality. The car is incredibly well-built and reliable, and I am now considering becoming a full-time Toyota customer for life! While it may not handle the best and is a bit slow with the 1.6 and auto trans, it is as quiet and smooth-riding as a much larger car. I am really impressed!

I've owned this car for 4 years now and I'm happy to say that I've never experienced any major malfunctions. It's a great car if you're looking to save some money and prioritize reliability.

Hi there! I've been driving this vehicle for about two years now and I must say, it's been a great companion for me as a college student. It's super dependable and I haven't had any issues with the engine or the car itself. I've been driving around 13,000 miles a year and it's been smooth sailing all the way!

Congratulations on your new car! It's wonderful that it has such low mileage and has been in the family for so long. It's great to hear that it's been performing well for you and is more fuel-efficient than your previous vehicle. I hope you continue to enjoy it for many years to come!
