2003 Toyota Celica problems

The Toyota Celica (/ˈsɛlɪkə/ or /sɛˈliːkə/) (Japanese: トヨタ・セリカ, Hepburn: Toyota Serika) is an automobile produced by Toyota from 1970 until 2006. The Celica name derives from the Latin word coelica meaning heavenly or celestial. In Japan, the Celica was exclusive to the Toyota Corolla Store dealer chain. Produced across seven generations, the Celica was powered by various four-cylinder engines, and bodystyles included convertibles, liftbacks, coupés and notchback coupés.

In 1973, Toyota coined the term liftback to describe the Celica fastback hatchback, and used the name Liftback GT for the North American market. Like the Ford Mustang, the Celica concept was to attach a coupe body to the chassis and mechanicals from a high volume sedan, in this case the Toyota Carina. Some journalists thought it was based on the Corona due to some shared mechanical parts.

The first three generations of North American market Celicas were powered by variants of Toyota's R series engine. In August 1985, the car's drive layout was changed from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive turbocharged models were offered from 1986 to 1999. Variable valve timing came in certain Japanese models starting from December 1997 and became standard in all models from the 2000 model year. In 1986, the six-cylinder Celica Supra variant was spun off as a separate model, becoming simply the Supra. Lightly altered versions of the Celica were also sold through as the Corona Coupé through the Toyopet dealer network in the 1980s and as the Toyota Curren through the Vista network in the 1990s.

The Toyota Celica Liftback GT won Motor Trend Car of the Year (Imported Vehicle) in 1976.

Common 2003 Toyota Celica problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Toyota Celica 2003, here are the common problems associated with this car:

  • Rough Idling and Misfires: Some Celica models experience rough driving, occasional misfires, backfires, and a lit check engine light. This issue is linked to valve performance problems in the 1.8-liter engines, specifically related to soft valve seats that wear down quickly. Resolving this requires rebuilding the cylinder head with new valves.
  • ABD Warning Light: Owners have reported the ABS light being illuminated without a noticeable loss of brake power. This issue is common in Celicas with high mileage and is typically caused by a worn-out wheel speed sensor. Replacing the sensor and cleaning the mounting area can resolve this problem.
  • Incorrect Gear Changes (All automatics): Some automatic Celicas may experience issues with gear changes not occurring at the correct time. This problem is often attributed to a misadjusted throttle position sensor or a broken shift solenoid, which can be replaced with parts readily available.
  • Braking Issues: Owners have noted decreased brake effectiveness and a grinding sound when brakes are applied. This problem can arise from rusted brake discs due to long periods of inactivity. Resolving this involves ordering new brake discs and pads to replace the worn-out components.
  • Sluggish Engine: A common complaint is a sluggish engine performance while driving, which is typically caused by a dirty fuel filter. Cleaning or replacing the fuel filter can help resolve this issue and improve engine performance.
  • Squealing Sound When Starting: Some owners have reported a loud squealing sound during cold starts, which is often linked to faulty tensioner pulleys. Replacing these pulleys can eliminate the noise and prevent further issues.

These common problems with the Toyota Celica 2003 highlight various issues that owners have faced, ranging from engine failures to braking issues. Addressing these problems promptly can help maintain the car's performance and safety.

  • VIN: JTDDR32T730
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

ON 10/08/2006, THE SAME PROBLEM WAS ENCOUNTERED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PUT FUEL IN THE VEHICLE. FUELING IS NOW DIFFICULT AND VERY TIME CONSUMING. ONLY ABOUT ONE-TENTH OF A GALLON CAN BE PUMPED BEFORE THE FUEL PUMP AUTOMATICALLY SHUTS OFF. THIS APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY FUEL BACKING UP IN THE FUEL INLET PIPE AND FUEL SPLASHING BACK OUT. TOYOTA HAS BEEN CONTACTED AND A SERVICE APPOINTMENT SCHEDULED AT A LOCAL DEALERSHIP. HOWEVER, I GOT THE IMPRESSION THEY ARE RELUCTANT TO REMEDY THIS FREE OF CHARGE SINCE THE PROBLEM WAS SUPPOSEDLY FIXED 3 YEARS AGO. *NM

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-04-04
  • Crash: 1
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THIS CONCERNS A 2003 TOYOTA CELICA GT WITH A POPPING NOISE IN THE FRONT END WHEN BACKING AND TURNING. THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE IT; NO REPAIRS WERE DONE. IT DEVELOPED A HUM FROM THE RIGHT FRONT AND A SQUEEK IN THE REAR. A NON-TOYOTA MECHANIC RODE WITH ME AND DIAGNOSED A BAD FRONT WHEEL HUB/BEARING. TOYOTA REPLACED IT. IT STOPPED THE HUM AND THE SQUEEK, BUT NOT THE POP. WE TOOK IT FOR A TIRE ROTATION, BUT THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS WORN DOWN TO THE STEEL BELT SO THE TIRE SHOP WOULDN'T DO THE ROTATION. THE CAR HAD A PROBLEM IN THE RIGHT FRONT. WE BELIEVED THE POPPING NOISE AND TIRE WEAR WERE CONNECTED. WE TOOK IT BACK TO TOYOTA. THEY DID A WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND ADJUSTED THE BRAKES. IT DIDN'T STOP THE POP AND THE STEERING SEEMED TO HAVE A PROBLEM; IF THE WHEEL WAS TURNED SLIGHTLY IN EITHER DIRECTION, THE CAR MADE DANGEROUSLY SHARP DIRECTIONAL CHANGES. MY SON TOOK IT BACK TO TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD "IT'S A SPORTS CAR; IT'S SUPPOSE TO BE THAT WAY." TWO DAYS LATER, THE CAR WAS WRECKED. THE CAR VEERED TO THE LEFT AND HIT A CONSTRUCTION BARREL, DROPPED ABOUT A FOOT OFF THE LEFT SHOULDER, AND HIT A CEMENT CURB. I SPOKE TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT THE PROBLEMS, THE INABILITY ON THEIR PART TO DUPLICATE AND FIX THE PROBLEMS AND THE STEERING CHANGES. HE TOLD ME TO CONTACT TOYOTA PRODUCT LIABILITY BECAUSE THE CAR PROBLEMS WHICH THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE OR FIX. I AM WAITING FOR A TOYOTA INSPECTOR TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES. BMW ISSUED TSB THAT REQUIRED THEM TO REPLACE THE STEERING RACK AFTER THE SUSPENSION OR WHEELS WERE REPAIRED; IF NOT, THE STEERING COULD LOCK UP. TOYOTA HAS WORKED ON THE FRONT SUSPENSION, BUT NEVER PERFORMED AN ASSOCIATED STEERING FIX. I CONTEND THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM; TOYOTA FAILED TO FIX IT, ADDED TO THE PROBLEM (STEERING) CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE CAR. WAS TOYOTA AT FAULT?

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egative 2003 Toyota Celica car reviews

  1. Burley Quigley 2024-09-12

After I explained the problems I was having with my Celica GTS with an Automatic transmission to the Toyota representative, he informed me that there was nothing mechanically wrong with the car and that it was performing exactly as it should. Although I was disappointed with this response, he did confirm that Toyota planned to continue manufacturing this car. However, I must warn you that the car lacks power when accelerating from a stop, and I have experienced no acceleration even when flooring the gas pedal. Therefore, I would not recommend purchasing this car.

  2. Ron Konopelski 2024-07-25

I think the Celica is an okay car, but it can be a bit tricky to handle due to its light weight. It's important to be cautious, especially in wet conditions, as it can hydroplane quite easily. Unfortunately, I was in an accident because of this issue. Overall, I do like my car, but I wish it was safer. At first, I thought the problem was with the tires, but even after getting new ones, I still had to be careful.

  3. Isaias Moore 2024-06-18

This car takes too long to get going. When you press the gas pedal, it takes about 5 seconds to respond (when you are at 7000 rpm). I understand that it is designed this way, and it does handle corners and turns well, but I still feel that it lacks power and feels sluggish when starting. At least a 6-cylinder Grand Am can make the tires squeal when you floor it. Apparently, a manual transmission is a must for this car since you need to rev it up to about 7,000 rpm and drop the clutch to have a good start off the line. I'm just disappointed because I was looking for something sporty, but this car doesn't have the oomph I was hoping for.

  4. Keshawn Kris 2024-02-12

Comparing this 2003 model to the previous '99 model, the rpm redline is lower, which lowers performance in acceleration. This is a bit frustrating, as I really enjoyed the performance of the older model. I wish Toyota had kept the redline higher. Hopefully, they will consider this feedback for future models.

Positive 2003 Toyota Celica car reviews

  1. Kyle Goldner 2024-11-25

I got this car during the spring break of '04. From the moment I sat down in it, I knew this was the car for me. Simply put, the looks are amazing. The redesign of the tail lights is great. They look like the redded-out versions people have been buying. Although I have found that the power is lacking a little, the way it handles turns makes you soon forget about that. I love this car and wouldn't trade it for anything else right now. So, why not stop reading this and go drive one? It's not just a chick's car, it's a driver's car!

  2. Rudolph Kulas 2024-11-08

I love this car! It's been my dream car for years! I got it for my birthday and it's been working perfectly!

  3. Jasper Kohler 2024-11-07

The Celica is a blast to drive! It also gets fairly good gas mileage and has plenty of room in the trunk, especially when you put the rear seats down. It's a wonderful car for those of us without little kids. ;-)

  4. Torrey Crist 2024-11-06

This is my first brand new car at the age of 40. I wanted a car that was sporty yet economical, and this car suits me perfectly since I am only 5'1

  5. Mackenzie Schneider 2024-11-05

I was so excited from the moment I laid eyes on The Celica GT 2003! Its front design is absolutely beautiful, and the unique hood adds to its charm. Not only is it well grounded with great traction, but it also has fantastic gas mileage compared to my 6 cylinder SUV, which is such a gas guzzler.
