Toyota Camry hybrid 2008 problems
The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- VIN: 4T1BK46K08U
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I am experiencing significant glaring on my windshield as a result of my melting dashboard reflecting on the windshield. This problem is making my car unsafe to drive. The glare becomes extremely intense with rain and night driving. After researching this issue today, apparently Toyota is well aware of this safety issue but did not notify me about a program to replace my dashboard. I am only becoming aware today that there was a program to fix this issue. I understand this same problem has been reported by many other Toyota Camry owners. I contacted Toyota today to report my concerns and requested assistance to remedy this safety problem. The Toyota rep. recommended I file a complaint here with NJTSA. Also Toyota will see if they can arrange for me to bring my car in to a Toyota Dealer for an inspection.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-08
- VIN: 4T1BK46K18U
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: My Camry has the reflection from the dashboard causing vision issues looking out of the front windshield. Also the dash is very sticky and peels off if your finger nail hits it. I know Toyota had a TSB on this issue but when I reach out to them they said they knew about the issue but my car is out of the timeframe. If it is a safety issue it should not have a time limit, you need to be able to see out of the front windshield clearly? I have reach out to other dashboard repair companies and they will not touch this car due the TSB that was issued on the car. They say it is not repairable and I need a new dashboard.

- Summary: No complete failure has happened as I chose to not drive the vehicle as I feel it is unsafe. The rear trailing arm body mounts rust to a point that I feel the structural integrity is compromised. At first glance the mount appears intact but after tapping lightly with a small hammer pieces of the mount fall off leaving a large portion of the mount missing. I have attached pictures of the mount before checking the mount and after to show how much of the mount is left. If this mount were to fail it could cause loss of control of the vehicle and a crash.

Dealer diagnosed wrong last year stating 12v battery needed replacement. I did the $500. It did NOT fix the problem. Now dealer states actuator pump failure - replace/fix price approx $4,000. I asked for diagnostic readouts to prove to me that they have it right this time. (I'm over 50 hours into this ABS failure) he refused and would not agree to refund my money if I would go ahead with their advised repair. My car has only 116,000 miles on it! I've checked around & it seems that my model should be part of recall/repair. I've gotten nothing written from Toyota when I have inquired in writing. Extremely dangerous, this failure!

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 4T1be46k88u
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I was driving on the highway and I smelled something burning towards my left. I looked at my door panel and saw the window switch on fire. I immediately pulled over to the side of the freeway. I opened the door, got out, and attempted to put out the fire. If I did not react fast enough I could have easily have got trapped on the driver side and would have to try to rush out of the passenger side as I wouldn’t have any control of opening the driver door or window. I had no success of extinguishing the fire and then called 911. I answered their questions and they were dispatched. I got lucky and a good samaritan had a fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire. Five minutes later the firefighters showed up. Eventually, the door panel melted to the ground from the heat. Firefighters went through the car to determine if the fire was out. They gave the okay, took my information, and left me with an inspection number. CHP also came by to check on me. He didn’t leave any inspection numbers. The car is available for inspection if need be. The was no warning lamps, messages, etc. I’m not sure if the problem has been reproduced the dealer or independent shop.

There were no warning lights illuminated. Upon inspecting the engine, the contact noticed there was no engine oil in the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the vehicle had consumed an excessive amount of engine oil, causing the engine to fail. The independent mechanic advised the contact to tow the vehicle to the local dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as there was no recall associated with the VIN and the vehicle warranty had expired. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-02
- VIN: 4t1bb46k68u
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: Brake actuator failure is too common in this vehicle. Needs to be an open warranty without limitation. This is a safety issue Toyota should be handling. On June 25, 2014, Toyota initiated a Warranty Enhancement Program (ZE1) to extend warranty coverage for the brake actuator assembly and skid control ECU/brake pedal stroke sensor in certain MY 2007 to 2011 Toyota Camry hybrid vehicles. Toyota's program covers repairs related to two conditions: internal malfunctions of the Brake Actuator assembly; and overly sensitive monitoring logic for the Brake Pedal Stroke Sensor. Melting dash is ridiculous as well. I can only imagine what kind of cancer I will be getting from inhaling the noxious fumes from the melting dash.
Toyota Camry hybrid 2008 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the Toyota Camry hybrid 2008.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.
- Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. Those owners may contact Pontiac Customer Care at 1-800-762-2737.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
- Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
- Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with our 2008 Hybrid Camry that we purchased in November 08. It's such a quiet car that you have to check if the power is turned on. Our first driving experience in a Hybrid was a trip of about 225 miles, which involved climbing from sea level to over 4,500 ft. I was amazed that the car had no problem climbing hills or keeping up with traffic. On this road trip, we averaged 42 miles per gallon, which is even better than what Toyota stated. I'm sure the car is capable of doing even better, but if you can get over 722 miles on a tank of gas (17.2 gallons), you're doing great! The key to getting great gas mileage on a hybrid is to avoid jack rabbit starts and keep your speed down. Thank you for reading!
-
I've had my Hybrid since Feb 08 and I absolutely love it! The gas mileage is fantastic, getting around 36 mpg around town and up to 44 mpg on our family trips which average about 6 hours of driving time. However, I must admit that I am a bit disappointed with the navigation system as it is not very user friendly. Our previous Nissan had a much easier system to use.

After conducting extensive research, I decided to purchase a Toyota Prius. However, upon test driving the vehicle, I found that it did not meet my comfort standards. Instead, I opted for the Hybrid Camry and was immediately impressed with its exceptional comfort and beautiful all-leather interior. The display screen and hands-free Bluetooth with voice command features have also made driving much safer and more convenient. I have been using this car as my primary mode of transportation for over two weeks now and have yet to refill the tank. Overall, I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase and highly recommend the Hybrid Camry.
-
I test drove several hybrids before settling for the Camry, and what won me over was the handling, the ride and the smooth transition from gas to electric. I currently have about 2900 miles on my Camry and have even taken it on a road trip and my fuel average is 39.9 miles per gallon. Much better than the EPA estimate for the 2008 model. Coming from a VW suv that got 16.5 mpg this is a god send, since the prices of gas keep rising. I got the fully loaded Camry with leather and navigation. This is the best car I have ever owned. Thank you Toyota

I've had my Toyota for 8 months and unfortunately, the paint is chipping. The dealer has not been able to assist me with this issue and I am currently waiting for the Toyota representative to help me resolve it. Additionally, I have been experiencing lower than expected mpg, averaging around 32 mpg even when driving above the speed limit. As fuel efficiency was a key factor in my decision to purchase this vehicle, I am disappointed with this outcome. While the ride quality is not the best, it is something I can tolerate. However, the paint and mpg issues have been a source of frustration. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
