2007 Pontiac Solstice problems
The Pontiac Solstice is a sports car that was produced by Pontiac. Introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, the Solstice roadster began production in Wilmington, Delaware, starting in mid-2005 for the 2006 model year. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4 L I4 engine, producing 177 hp (132 kW) and 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) of torque. The exterior styling of the production Solstice is similar to that of the 2002 Solstice concept that preceded it. Production of the Solstice was to be running before summer 2005, but delays at the Wilmington plant pushed volume production to the fourth quarter. The new hardtop targa top 2009 model was announced in mid-2008. The Solstice uses the GM Kappa platform, which also underpins the Saturn Sky, Opel GT, and Daewoo G2X. It was the brand's first two-seater since the Pontiac Fiero was discontinued in 1988.
The Solstice was nominated for the North American Car of the Year award and Design of the Year award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) for 2006. It was a runaway hit for Pontiac, with 7,000 orders in the first 10 days of availability and 6,000 more orders before winter. Although first-year production was planned at 7,000, GM apologized to customers for delays and increased production, delivering 10,000 by March 1.
Following the 2008 economic recession, GM discontinued the Pontiac division. Production ended with the closure of the Wilmington Assembly plant in July 2009.

Common 2007 Pontiac Solstice problems
The 2007 Pontiac Solstice has received criticism for several issues, including recalls, build quality, reliability, and practicality.
- Build Quality: The Pontiac Solstice suffered from build quality issues due to General Motors' hurried production. The car was rushed into production, leading to various issues with different iterations of the Solstice.
- Reliability: The Solstice has some reliability issues, which negatively impact its overall performance. For instance, the cast iron header is prone to cracking, which can cost around $450 to replace. Additionally, the battery placement is inconvenient for replacement, requiring jacking up the car and removing the inner fender to access the battery.
- Practicality: The Solstice is far from practical, with a severe lack of trunk space and minimal storage within the cabin. The cupholders are also problematic, with low-grade plastic that becomes brittle and breaks over time, making them useless. The battery placement is another impractical feature, as it requires more effort to replace compared to most cars.
These issues have contributed to the Pontiac Solstice being considered one of the biggest sports car flops of the century, despite its initial positive reception and potential as a fun and inexpensive compact sports car.
What was the biggest problem with the Pontiac Solstice?
Rushed into production, the Pontiac Solstice was a stylish two-seat roadster that never quite lived up to its looks. It was powered by a 2.4-liter, 177-hp four-cylinder engine that sounds and feels harsh when revved. Wide spacing between the gear ratios in the five-speed manual is a major flaw.
Is a 2007 Pontiac Solstice a good car?
Edmunds says. With sexy styling, satisfying performance, tenacious road-holding and a bargain price, the 2007 Pontiac Solstice is certainly tempting. But serious enthusiasts will get more thrills out of the more refined Mazda Miata, which feels lighter on its tires and more connected to the driver.
How many miles will a Pontiac Solstice last?
may need to be replaced but again the motor if taken care of should be fine . There have been many examples of NAs going strong at 250,000 miles. It appears that a well maintained 2.4 that is not abused can last nearly forever.
Why did Pontiac stop making the Solstice?

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
- VIN: 1G2MG35X27Y
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: I bought a 2007 Pontiac Solstice recently from an individual. I saw online that there was an airbag recall. I called my local Chevy dealer and they ordered the recall kit. I brought the car in and they did the fix. However, the airbag, on the passenger side, problem still existed. Sometimes, when my 110 lb. wife got in the passenger side, the airbag would read "ON", and sometimes it would not. So I took my car back to the dealer today. The service manager showed me a bulletin from General Motors, that said the passenger, had to weigh at least 150 lbs. for the airbag to work. I feel this is a real safety concern and need to know how to get this safety issue resolved.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-16
- VIN: 1G2MB35B57Y
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2007 Pontiac Solstice. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, an unknown warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the failure was linked with NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V061000 (Air Bags); however, the vehicle was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-21
- VIN: 1G2MB35B37Y
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While applying the brakes the car down shifts hard, locking up and jerking. Many others had reported this problem in online forums. Stating a power train or module issue. Very dangerous not knowing if your car my jerk into someone or something out of your control.
AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-09
- VIN: 1G2MG35XX7Y
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: New in 2007 Pontiac Solstice. In May of 2018 the recall 17036 was completed at 28,000 after waiting several months for the solution and then several months for the part to arrive. PPS passenger seat weighted sensor module failed again August 2023 at 36,000 miles. Repair only lasted 8,000 miles. I was told this module controls the passenger seat air bag. I was also told that if module fails the passenger seat air bag will not deploy putting the passenger in an unsafe position. The passenger present light will be off when seat is occupied. The DIC (information display) will only read service air bag until the fault code is corrected. I use this to mainly to monitor coolant temperature of the engine although it has other functions. There will also be a red warning light on in the middle of the dash cluster. Visiting the forums there are many on their third and fourth repair. The recall should be reopened. One quote I received was for over $ 1,200. I do not feel I should have to pay out of pocket for a safety issue. In order to protect my passenger that is why I paid to have the recalled part replaced again. Your passenger is also your lifeline. Yes, I know it is out of warranty on this Safety incident. Many say the manufacturer should cover the safety issues. I feel dealership should cover this expensive safety issue at the directive of manufacturer.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-31
- VIN: 1G2MB35BX7Y
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Service Air Bag warning light is on for passenger seat. Had the PPM replaced and still does not work. Dealer said I need to replace the Front Impact Sensor. Is this covered on a recall? The cost is almost $500.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
- VIN: 1G2MB35B37Y
- Components: AIR BAGS

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-01-01
- VIN: 1G2MB35B37Y
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Had a recall for the airbags a few years ago. I got it "fixed" at that time but soon after getting it done, the "check airbags" light came back on. I've been chancing it each time I get behind the wheel because of the hassle I went through with dealing with the recall. The first GM location I went to wanted to charge me. The second GM location that "fixed" the airbag was over an hour away so I had to inconvenience someone to go back and forth with me to drop off and pick up the car days later. Then as mentioned, soon after the "repair", the light was back on so I believe they just put a band-aid on the problem but didnt really fix it. Now after coming very close to a collision, I want to get this repaired but do not feel I should pay for it. This is a safety concern and reading through the complaints, it appears many are having the same reoccurring issue. Car only has 55,000 miles.
AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
- VIN: 1g2mg35x07y
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: The airbag sensor in the passenger seat has been recalled before, their only fix was to wrap it in tape, which does not solve the issue, this is a continuing problem for owners of kappa platform cars (Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, etc.) for years and gm continues to ignore it, it is absolutely a safety issue due to the exorbitant price of the fix many people will just continue to drive the vehicle with no functioning passenger airbag.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-02
- VIN: 1g2mb35bx7y
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When I was slowing down to come to a stop at 15-20mph it suddenly hard shifted and jerked like the brakes came on but I did not have my foot on the brake. The back tires squealed like they locked up or something. Lucky no one was behind me or I may have gotten rear ended. My care has 50K miles and this is the first time this has happened. I drove straight home and it did it 4-5 times more on the way home? Any ideas as to what the problem may be? This is definitely a safety issue. From what I have read this looks like this has been an ongoing issue for awhile.. Has this issue been looked at before? If so, what is the resolutions?

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-15
- VIN: 1G2MG35X57Y
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The airbag safety indicator shows a fault, indicating the passenger airbag is not operational. I researched the cause since we have no local GM dealers and the forums show this issue was addressed by a recall notice. However, this care was not part of that recall. I will be happy to have it inspected but don't want to pay the outrageous prices for a dealer inspection, especially since the closest shop is 25 miles away and I don't want it left outside (never been in rain).

2007 Pontiac Solstice recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2007 Pontiac Solstice.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. The Passenger Air Bag Suppression System (PPS) sensor may become bent or damaged within the front passenger seat, possibly disabling the front passenger air bag.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, if the front passenger air bag does not deploy as intended, the front passenger has an increased risk of injury.
- Remedy: The remedy for this recall is still under development. A permanent remedy is currently under development. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 17036.
- Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
- Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
- Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GMs recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT:SEAL
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE REAR AXLE PINION SEAL DOES NOT MEET ALL OF THE SPECIFICATIONS AND MAY EXPERIENCE A FLUID LEAK.
- Consequence: A REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILURE MAY CAUSE LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER AND POSSIBLY LOSS OF CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Solstice - I absolutely love it! It's great on gas and surprisingly comfortable to drive, despite its small size. The car handles turns smoothly and the ride is very smooth for a small roadster!

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that while the car is sweet, it doesn't have much cargo room. Take care!

I'm so glad to be driving this car! It's definitely a head-turner. Although it's a two-seater, my 6-ft husband finds it comfortable. The interior is a bit tight, so it might not be the best choice for larger individuals. I did notice that there's quite a bit of plastic in the interior, and the window switch can be a bit difficult to reach. One thing to keep in mind is that the back window isn't replaceable on its own - the entire roof needs to be replaced. Also, be aware that dealers may add an extra charge due to market demand. Overall, have fun and enjoy the ride!

This is a great vehicle! I test drove the roadster, which was fantastic, but when I test drove the GXP I just couldn't resist. I was set on a new sedan until I got behind the wheel. It's even peppier than my '04 Grand Prix GT and handles great. It's very fun and unique. I just wonder what it will be like in the winter.

I waited for 7 months to get my GXP. But it was definitely worth the wait! I was pleasantly surprised by how much power this small car has. It truly is a sports car in every respect.

It's still too early to tell as I only dropped it off at the dealer last week due to an intermittent 'no starter when you turn the key' problem. But I'm excited to test it out more when I get the car back! Overall, I find this car to be really enjoyable to drive. The 2.0 turbo really takes care of the weak performance that kept me from buying the first year's model. The handling is on par with cars that cost $10k+ more (I've even driven a Crossfire!). Even on an 11°F day with cold tires and roads, this car drove like it was on rails - the suspension set-up is perfect, in my humble opinion. The only thing I found myself wishing for was the ability to reach the seat angle knob while driving, but that would take a skinny-armed contortionist.

I have mixed feelings about my car. I've had it for 2 months. I love the way it looks and driving a manual transmission convertible can be fun. People in those BMW Z4s always look at me instead of me looking at them now. However, I have experienced some issues with the transmission and gear ratios. If you're considering buying a Solstice, you may want to ask other owners about the 'clunk' and 'differential' problems they may have experienced. GM claims the clunk is normal and has no remedy for the problem. Additionally, the A/C and rear differential can make some annoying whining noises. Lastly, be prepared to pay a 3k-6k markup on this car like I did. If you want the car, I recommend finding a dealership that will sell it for MSRP. It will be well worth it.
