Common 1999 Saturn Sc problems

The 1999 Saturn SC2 has several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems fall into various categories, including engine, accessories-interior, and exhaust system issues.

Engine Problems

One of the most common engine problems in the 1999 Saturn SC2 is related to the water temperature sensor. This issue can cause the car not to idle while at a stop or in neutral. The water temperature sensor is fragile and can crack easily. Replacing it is a simple and inexpensive solution that can fix the problem.

Another engine problem in the 1999 Saturn SC2 is the failure of the engine, transmission, clutch, and exhaust. However, some owners have reported that these components have not given them any problems and still have no signs of wearing out even after 130,000 miles.

Accessories-Interior Problems

The 1999 Saturn SC2 has several accessories-interior problems, including power locks dying, air conditioning dying, and locks breaking on the driver door. These issues are not major problems, but they can be inconvenient for the car's owner.

Exhaust System Problems

The 1999 Saturn SC2 has exhaust system problems, including the catalytic converter about to break. This issue can cause the car to fail emissions tests and can be expensive to fix.

Other Issues

Other issues that have been reported by owners of the 1999 Saturn SC2 include wheel bearings going bad, fuel filter replacement, idle pulley bearings going out, and valve cover gasket replacement. These issues can be expensive to fix, but they can be prevented by keeping up with regular maintenance and tune-ups.

In summary, the 1999 Saturn SC2 has several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems include engine, accessories-interior, and exhaust system issues. Regular maintenance and tune-ups can help prevent some of these problems, but others, such as the water temperature sensor issue, can be fixed with simple and inexpensive solutions.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-05-12
  • VIN: 1G8ZH1273XZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON MAY 12, 2012 I TRIED TO START MY CAR AND IT WOULDN'T TURN OVER. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE REPLACED THE IGNITION MODULE (PART NUMBER LX386) ON MY 1999 SATURN SC2. THEN ON DECEMBER 5, 2013, I WAS DRIVING ON THE GRAND CENTRAL PARKWAY IN NYC AND MY CAR DIED. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY MAKE MY WAY OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE BUSY PARKWAY. I WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND ONCE AGAIN I HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE THE IGNITION MODULE. I'M WONDERING WHY MY CAR ISN'T ON THE RECALL LIST FOR THE GM IGNITION SWITCH AS I HAVE NOW HAD TO REPLACE THIS PART TWICE IN THE PAST 2 YEARS AND I'M VERY WORRIED THAT I CURRENTLY HAVE A FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH IN MY CAR WHICH COULD LEAD TO A DANGEROUS CRASH WHERE MY AIRBAGS WON'T DEPLOY. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-18
  • VIN: 1G8ZN1284XZ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TODAY I WENT TO PUT MY 1999 5 SPEED SATURN SC1 INTO REVERSE. WHEN I DID, I FELT A POP AND WAS STUCK IN REVERSE. AFTER REMOVING THE CONSOLE, WE FOUND THAT THE PLASTIC BUSHING HOLDING THE GEARSHIFT ROD TO THE CABLE HAD SNAPPED. (LUCKILY I WAS IN A PARKING LOT WHEN THIS OCCURRED). THIS COULD'VE BEEN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. SATURN REFUSES TO SELL THE BUSHING BY ITSELF AND WILL ONLY SELL IT AS A PART OF A $250 GEARSHIFT CABLE KIT, EVEN THOUGH THE BUSHING IS THE ONLY BROKEN PART. THE SERVICE/PARTS EMPLOYEE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND IF THE BUSHING WERE MADE OF METAL AND NOT PLASTIC IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE BROKEN. WE TEMPORARILY WIRED THE ROD TO THE CABLE TO GET HOME, BUT DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL IT IS PERMANENTLY FIXED. IT IS A RIP-OFF THAT SATURN WILL NOT SELL THE REPLACEMENT PART FOR A REASONABLE PRICE. *TR
