2022 Tesla Model y problems

The Tesla Model Y is a battery electric mid-size crossover SUV produced by Tesla, Inc. since 2020. The vehicle was presented in March 2019 as the company's fifth production model since its inception after the Roadster, Model S, Model X and Model 3.

After its 2019 introduction, the Model Y started production at the Fremont Factory in California, US in January 2020. Production at Giga Shanghai, China was added in December 2020, and at Giga Texas, US since late 2021. Deliveries from Giga Berlin, Germany started in March 2022.

The Model Y is based on the Model 3 sedan, with around 76 percent of parts being shared between the two. While most Model Y are configured with two-row seating, in the US the Model Y offers optional third-row seats for a seven-passenger seating capacity.

In 2023, Tesla delivered 1.2 million Model Ys, making it the world's best-selling vehicle that year, surpassing Toyota Corolla and becoming the first electric vehicle to claim that title. With at least 2.16 million units delivered since its start of production up to December 2023, the Model Y is also the most popular electric vehicle of all time.

Common 2022 Tesla Model y problems

The Tesla Model Y, while a popular choice for those looking to make the switch to electric vehicles, has had some common problems reported by owners. These issues range from minor electronic glitches to more significant hardware malfunctions and safety concerns.

One of the most frequently reported problems is related to the bodywork and non-motor electrics. This includes issues such as bodywork damage, kerbing on the wheels, and signs of wear and tear on the interior. While these issues may not be as critical as some of the other problems reported, they can still be a source of frustration for owners and may require costly repairs.

Another area of concern for Tesla Model Y owners is the infotainment system. Some owners have reported erratic behavior and occasional malfunctions, which can impact the overall user experience. While these issues may not pose a safety risk, they can still be a source of inconvenience and may require professional attention to resolve.

One of the more significant safety concerns reported by Tesla Model Y owners is related to the power steering system. Between late 2017 and early 2022, more than 400 Model 3 or Model Y owners reported power steering failures to the automaker. Some of these failures were accompanied by outages of other safety systems, such as stability control. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigated these complaints in late July 2021, but Tesla had known about more than 30 times that number of complaints since 2017. Despite this, Tesla has sought to shift some of the resulting repair costs to customers, alleging that they abused the cars or that the parts were out of warranty.

In addition to these specific issues, Tesla as a brand has been criticized for its approach to customer service and communication. Some Model Y owners have reported frustrations with delayed service appointments and a lack of communication from dealerships, leading to a mixed overall picture.

Despite these issues, the Tesla Model Y has shown promise in terms of innovation and reduced traditional mechanical problems. However, there is still room for improvement in electronic reliability and consistency in dealer service. As with any vehicle, it is important for potential buyers to do their research and be aware of any common issues before making a purchase.

How long will 2022 Tesla Model Y last?

According to vehiclehistory.com, the Tesla Model Y will last 300,000-500,000 miles. The battery will have no issues getting to this point, but there are some flaws in the exterior design that could impact the life. Much of what you do will affect the lifespan of your innovative vehicle.

Is the Tesla Model Y reliable vehicle?

In comparison, the Tesla Model Y achieved an overall score of 79 out of 100, with a "Quality & Reliability" rating of 73 out of 100, an impressive "Driving Experience" rating of 88 out of 100, and a solid "Resale" rating of 81 out of 100, in 2022, which was the best-rated year for the vehicle.

What is the suspension problem with the Tesla Model Y?

A Tesla owner says he got a $14,000 repair bill one day after buying a Model Y. A new report suggests it's part of a much bigger problem. A Tesla owner received a $14,000 repair bill for a day-one issue with his Model Y, Reuters reported. He said the Model Y's suspension broke with only 115 miles on the odometer.

Did Model Y get slower?

You're paying for what you get here since the new Model Y also accelerates slower with a 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. That's significantly slower than the five-second dash from 0 to 60 mph with the base trim of the all-wheel drive Model Y that's no longer.

Negative 2022 Tesla Model y car reviews

  1. Nicholas Kreiger 2024-11-15

We were excited about the idea of owning an electric vehicle and decided to go all-in with a Tesla. We opted for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to our expectations. We found out that the feature couldn't be used at night due to the interior camera monitoring the driver's alertness, which was a bit disappointing. However, we understand that safety is a top priority. We did experience some phantom braking, which was a bit scary, but overall, the Model Y was a great car. We eventually decided to trade it in due to the issues mentioned above, as well as our love for spontaneous off-road trips, which made charging a bit of a challenge.

  2. Jack Bartell 2024-10-05

My Tesla Model Y Performance has experienced several issues, including paint problems, rattling noises, issues with doors, noisy brakes and suspension, a leaking trunk and frunk, and a problem with the windshield. Additionally, the temperature sensor had to be replaced and the back plastic shield was lost during the rainy season. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in the quality of my vehicle and will continue to work with the service team to address any concerns.

  3. Alexzander Marks 2024-10-02

I recently purchased a Model Y for $71,800. Unfortunately, on the first day, we noticed that the AC wasn't working properly. By the second day, it had completely stopped working and displayed a message indicating that it required servicing. When I contacted customer service, they confirmed that it needed to be serviced, but unfortunately, they were unable to schedule an appointment for over a week. Additionally, I was hoping to pair my garage door remote, but was informed that I needed to purchase Homelink for an additional $377. I also needed a charger to plug into my home outlet, but was disappointed to learn that it no longer comes with the vehicle. I had to order it separately, and it still has not shipped. Overall, I'm a bit frustrated with these issues, but I'm hopeful that they will be resolved soon.

  4. Jermain Hilpert 2024-09-01

I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your 2022 Model Y. It sounds like you are committed to electric vehicles, which is great to hear! While Tesla may not be the right fit for you, there are many other options out there to explore. In the meantime, I hope you are able to get your car serviced soon and that the issue is resolved quickly.

  5. Ariel Zemlak 2024-08-06

I recently purchased my third Tesla, a 2022 Model Y, after previously owning a 2016 Model S and a 2019 Model X. While I have experienced some challenges with the semi-driverless and self-parking features not being included and the Key FOB being an additional cost, I have found the overall experience to be positive. Although using the phone as a key can be inconvenient and the physical key can be difficult to use, I am confident that these minor issues can be resolved. While I have considered exploring other options such as the Cadillac Lyric, I remain a loyal Tesla customer and look forward to future innovations.

Positive 2022 Tesla Model y car reviews

  1. Agustin Toy 2025-01-02

I've owned this car for two years and have had a few minor issues that I was able to fix at home. Although I have other cars, my family and I tend to gravitate towards driving this one. There has been a lot of buzz around Tesla lately, and it seems that Edmunds' ratings have been affected by this hype. It appears that they have intentionally lowered the rating of other cars to boost Tesla's rating. For instance, the Model Y has a much larger storage capacity than the BMW ix, yet the Tesla only received an 8 rating while the BMW received an 8.5. Really? Additionally, it's unreasonable to continue to complain about the lack of Apple CarPlay when Tesla's system offers better options and visualizations.

  2. Bertha Willms 2024-10-25

Hey there! I'm a car guy through and through! My collection includes a 2006 Land Cruiser, a 2022 Ram Power Wagon, and a race car. I have to admit, I was never really attracted to the idea of driving an EV. But after having the Model Y for almost a year and putting around 11,000 miles on it, I can confidently say that I wouldn't switch back to an ICE as my daily driver. This vehicle does everything my previous DD, a 740i, did - except it's faster, handles better, and I believe it's safer. It has almost as much room and is incredibly intuitive. Unlike most other vehicles, which are built with the understanding that you will adapt to their systems and instrument cluster to take full advantage of the vehicle, Teslas are overwhelmingly software-driven. This allows them to be infinitely adjustable and customizable to your needs. Plus, the fact that it's an EV and costs a fraction of an ICE in daily use with virtually zero upkeep is just the icing on the cake. While most car companies, including the European brands, have gone to EV, they should also take notice of Tesla and start building vehicles with the end-user in mind!

  3. Luigi Schoen 2024-10-08

One year after purchase, and compared to 23 new cars purchased across our history, our Tesla Model Y Performance is (by far) the best car we've ever owned. The fit and finish on the car is absolutely perfect, and the car has had no service requirements of any kind. We're planning ahead for the only two service items the car will need: rotating tires and filling the windshield washer fluid reservoir. The car was delivered to our house by Tesla, and the one upgrade we ordered (automated connection to our garage door opener) was installed at our home by a Tesla technician. For the past year, my wife has not had to stand at a gas station to fill the car, nor needed an oil change, nor any kind of scheduled service. At nearly 500HP, this car outperforms all of my previously-owned Corvettes and my Mercedes S-Class. We charge at home, so the car is plugged in overnight 2-3 times per week (like my iPad or my phone). In fourteen months, we've driven 9,146 miles, and the total charging cost has been $308.75 (compared to an estimated $2,625 in gasoline for the same driving). (All these analytics are tracked by the phone app.) The car has a magnificent sound system, a gorgeous interior, every electronic amenity you can imagine, and Tesla updates the car with new features at no charge every month. The car has the highest safety rating of any car, the lowest theft rate of any car, and allows remote monitoring through its eight cameras. The car also records video 360 degrees around the car when the horn is blown, or should an accident occur. It knows when we're approaching home and opens the garage door, sounds a chime when it sees the light has turned green, and shows a visualization of the road and all the cars around us as we're driving. The heat-pump keeps the car warm or cool when parked, so you never get into a hot or cold cabin. It also has a special 'Dog mode' that holds a comfortable temperature when the dogs are left in the car while we duck into a store. We can even see the dogs on our phones using the internal camera. The security system is top-notch, allowing us to see all around the car from the app. The navigation system is superb, using the large screen for tons of detail. Road trips are fun and easy, with the Advanced Autopilot essentially driving the car on Interstates and highways (under our supervision, of course). This seriously reduces fatigue, with the navigation mapping out charging options and times along the way. Every charger is located at a good place to take a break or get a meal. We're planning to add another Tesla to our household this coming year, as there's nothing else that even comes close.

  4. Cristopher Koelpin 2024-09-12

I'm really impressed with it! It ticks all the boxes for safety, fun, and speed!

  5. Guido Flatley 2024-06-25

Great in snow and ice, handles well on curvy roads, has a great range and supercharges fast. Best of all, you get to drive right past all those gas stations. It's a great way to go for anyone tired of high gas prices. It may take a little time to get accustomed to the braking system, but it's a very minor adjustment considering all the benefits.
