2020 Tesla Model y problems
The Tesla Model Y is a battery electric mid-size crossover SUV produced by Tesla, Inc. since 2020. The vehicle was presented in March 2019 as the company's fifth production model since its inception after the Roadster, Model S, Model X and Model 3.
After its 2019 introduction, the Model Y started production at the Fremont Factory in California, US in January 2020. Production at Giga Shanghai, China was added in December 2020, and at Giga Texas, US since late 2021. Deliveries from Giga Berlin, Germany started in March 2022.
The Model Y is based on the Model 3 sedan, with around 76 percent of parts being shared between the two. While most Model Y are configured with two-row seating, in the US the Model Y offers optional third-row seats for a seven-passenger seating capacity.
In 2023, Tesla delivered 1.2 million Model Ys, making it the world's best-selling vehicle that year, surpassing Toyota Corolla and becoming the first electric vehicle to claim that title. With at least 2.16 million units delivered since its start of production up to December 2023, the Model Y is also the most popular electric vehicle of all time.

Common 2020 Tesla Model y problems
The 2020 Tesla Model Y, an all-electric small luxury SUV, has been praised for its long battery range, stunning acceleration, convenient Supercharger network, and roomy seating. However, it has also faced some common problems reported by owners, including touchscreen freezing, condensation in the headlights, and a few reports of the steering wheel coming loose.
One of the most widespread complaints from 2020 Model Y owners is the touchscreen freezing, which has been reported within the first 1,000 miles. Pressing and holding both buttons on the steering wheel typically restarts the screen, which resolves the problem. Tesla has also released many over-the-air updates to improve the reliability of the screen.
Another issue reported by some Model Y owners is condensation in the headlights, which has been observed around 5,000 miles. This problem is caused by the seals on the headlights in some production runs failing, allowing water to enter the light assembly. Tesla has been replacing headlights on affected models for free as part of a warranty service.
Additionally, there have been reports of the steering wheel coming loose, and in a couple of cases, coming off. Tesla has been replacing the steering wheel on affected models and is still investigating the source of the issues. The 2020 Tesla Model Y has 16 recalls, including a serious recall covering suspension knuckles that may fracture, increasing the risk of a crash.
The touchscreen freezing issue is likely due to software bugs, which Tesla has been actively addressing through over-the-air updates. The condensation in the headlights is a hardware problem related to the seals on the headlights, which Tesla has been addressing by replacing the headlights on affected models. The steering wheel coming loose or off is a more serious issue that Tesla is still investigating, but it has been replacing the steering wheel on affected models.
In summary, the 2020 Tesla Model Y has faced some common problems, including touchscreen freezing, condensation in the headlights, and steering wheel issues. However, Tesla has been proactive in addressing these issues through over-the-air updates, warranty replacements, and ongoing investigations.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE4LF
- Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: After being parked on a suburban street for about 3 hours, our Tesla Model Y experienced a complete loss of power-steering assist, requiring extreme hand-over-hand effort to turn the wheel and making it dangerous to drive. Warnings of "Steering assist reduced" and "Lane departure avoidance features unavailable" appeared on the display. After a 3-week wait, we finally got the vehicle to Tesla service, who diagnosed the issue and claimed that it was due to "...rodent damage to steering rack harness". They claim to have repaired the damage and the vehicle is again usable. Repair bill was $990. I have the vehicle and it is available for inspection. I cannot verify cause of the issue nor the repairs as they are not visible without a partial disassembly of the vehicle. No parts were returned to me (as I requested), so I must assume that none were actually replaced.
STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE6LF
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I own a 2020 Tesla Y with Hardware version 3 and after a few weeks of a free trial, purchased Tesla's Full Self-Driving Software (FSD) version 12.3.6. Since then, the FSD software was updated to version 12.5.4 and then 12.5.4.1. FSD version 12.3.6 had some safety issues. But version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 has had more issues that have resulted in nearly having accidents that I have had to suddenly avoid. FSD version 12.3.6 issues: 1. Wandering outside of center yellow dividing stripes when on a curvy two-lane roadway 2. Failing to yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn and oncoming traffic was not clearly in view due to a curvy two-lane road 3. Attempting to make a left turn into a busy intersection when the turn signal was still red FSD version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 additional issues: 1. Attempting to enter a two-lane roadway from a stop sign, when the perpendicular traffic was active and they had no stop sign, requiring me to slam on the brakes. 2. Sudden and erratic braking on a two-lane roadway, including directly under a signal, when no objects, people or other vehicles were in front of me, which nearly resulted in the vehicle behind me hitting me in the rear 3. Software sending a tone and screen alert to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to a "System Failure." 4. Software sending a tone and screen alert that to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to "one or more cameras blocked," when no cameras were blocked.

- Summary: The car locked my toddler inside his car seat because the 12v battery died died as soon as we put him in his seat and closed hid door. There was absolutely no warning before that battery had died, indicating that it was low. Because of the way a Model Y is designed, there is no mechanical way to open the door when the 12V battery dies. The toddler is incapable of manually unlocking the door from inside when the electrical button doesn’t work. This is a huge safety issue and can result in death of children if not resolved by Tesla

- Summary: Brought the vehicle in for tire replacement and alignment on 08/15/2024. Right front tire was wearing on the outside. Tesla service technician found bolt had backed out and jammed on rear subframe. This caused vehicle to pull to the right and presented a potential safety issue. The bolt secures a link between the wheel assembly and subframe. Tesla service center claims that I must have had an accident or hit a pothole etc. The vehicle has not been involved in any accident or hard bumps. I suspect this is an assembly issue . A properly installed bolt would not come loose.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE7LF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Tesla has automatic windshield wipers that are supposed to engage at various wiper speeds when rain is detected. The system does not activate soon enough or at an appropriate speed. Example: In rain situations on a highway when passing a large truck, the amount of spray on the windshield will completely occlude visibility at critical moments. Also if driving through a neighborhood in a drizzle, when kids are walking to school, the wipers do not adjust properly occluding visibility at critical moment’s. Potential solution : In both cases above the Tesla cameras detect the truck and the pedestrians, this data should be used to increase wiper activation and frequency. Tesla also collects user input data from drivers and perhaps collecting data when drivers activate their wipers compared to what the cameras are seeing will help adjust the wiper activation algorithm.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE9LF
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
- Summary: I have been getting "RCM2_a626" error for "front passenger safety restraint system fault. It comes and goes. Apparently it is a common issues among tesla owners. When I first filled for the error they quoted $2000 for replacing front passenger seat. The error went away so I canceled the appointment. Then it came back in a random fashion and getting more frequent. This time, in addition to replacing the front passanger seat cushion, "they're retrofitting "SBR in OCS Equipped Front Passenger Seat." I'm not sure what that means. If this is a common issue, there must be something to do with manufacturer QC.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE4LF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: When driving over 45 miles approximately the steering becomes sticky and hard to move. Feels like a bump in the rack and pinion and then it jerks which would cause a car to hit other vehicles or be out of control.
AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-10
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE8LF
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: we were in a head-on collision (not our fault) in April. The police determined the combined speed of the crash impact to be 60-65 miles per hour. The 2020 Tesla Y did not deploy its airbags. And as far as we can determine, the accident was not automatically recorded by the Tesla as it should have been. Because the airbags did not deploy, I sustained a fracture to my sternum that traverses over to my collarbone. We both have TBIs and other injuries. With that kind of an impact, one would expect an airbag to protect oneself, yet it did not. There were no warning lights/messages/etc from our vehicle. We are asking that you please look into this safety matter. (Especially since you are part of the push to have us own electric cars, they need to be safe for us). I do not know how much longer the Tesla will be available to inspect.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE4LF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When I went to my local garage to have a wheel rotation and wheel alignment done, they discovered that my rear driver side break hose was leaking. They also discovered that the rear passenger side break hose was showing similar wear/damage. I had the car towed to Tesla repair center because the replacement parts were backordered for the local garage. At the Tesla repair center, I asked if this was a potential build quality issue or something else, which they couldn't answer. Besides tire related items, like new tires and wheel alignment, all my other servicing was done thru Tesla. They noticed that they had done some half-shaft lubrication work that would have required them to disassemble the breaks. Of course they are not going to speculate or admit wrong doing. Therefore, in my mind, the issue was either original build quality from the factory or maybe the Tesla service mechanic not properly reassembling the breaks during one of the service visits. Just incase this was a factory build issue, I wanted to put in this incident so it can be counted towards any tally that NHTSA maybe keeping.
STEERING,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-20
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5YJYGDEFXLF
- Components: STEERING,WHEELS
- Summary: Tesla Model Y 2022 lost steering control April 20, 2024 Vehicles - Model Y While backing out of indoor parking garage Steering wheel locked up! Before I could hit the brake the car collided with the cement wall in the garage. Causing some damage to right side. I tried a system reset, no luck. Called Tesla they had me go into diag mode and try a few things with no success. They sent a tow trunk and took to car to the Tesla Highland Park then to the Collision center – they could not unlock the steering wheel and called in people from the FTS (Field Technical Support) team to look at it. Very UNSAFE, it could have been much worse. I do not trust the car anymore!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE6LF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I ordered a used Tesla Model Y (VIN [XXX] ) on [XXX]. At the time of purchase, the car had 31,540 miles and was picked up from the Stockton, CA location on [XXX]. Since then, the car has performed pretty well, however I’ve recently experienced a slew of issues with the dashcam function of the vehicle. I’ve taken the vehicle into Tesla Service on two separate occasions, however they were unable to fix the problem and now I’m hesitant to drive the vehicle. One of the primary reasons I chose a Tesla Model Y was for the safety and security of having a car with a built-in dashcam and now that works infrequently. I’ve taken the vehicle into Tesla twice for this issue and they have been unable to fix nor offer a solution for this issue. I now get several alerts a night about the dash cam not working while the vehicle is parked and not in operation and other issues are coming up including the mirrors not re-aligning and the screen of the vehicle not operating upon first getting into the car in the morning. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS PROBLEM

STEERING,SUSPENSION,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-05
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE1LF
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,AIR BAGS
- Summary: I am writing to file a complaint against Tesla, Inc. for refusing to repair recurring suspension issues that were supposedly addressed through previous recalls. As an owner of a 2020 Tesla Model Y (VIN: [XXX] ), I have experienced numerous problems related to the vehicle's suspension system, steering, and safety restraints, which I believe pose serious safety risks. My vehicle has undergone multiple repairs at Tesla service centers for issues such as squeaking noises when turning, vehicle shutdowns while driving, steering difficulties, and excessive tire wear. Many of these problems are related to the vehicle's suspension system, which has been the subject of several recalls by Tesla in recent years, including recalls [XXX],[XXX], [XXX], and [XXX]. Despite these recalls supposedly addressing the suspension issues, my vehicle continues to experience problems. Most recently, on [XXX], I brought my vehicle to a Tesla service center for a loud and distinct sound coming from the steering system. The service center diagnosed the issue and recommended repairs to the front half shaft assembly, front damper assembly, and front lower lateral links, with a total estimated cost of $3,670. These issues should be covered under warranty and are directly related to the previous suspension recalls. However, Tesla has refused to cover the repairs under warranty. Furthermore, I have experienced recurring issues with the front passenger safety restraint system, which required a retrofit of the Occupant Classification System (OCS) on two separate occasions. This suggests that the initial repair was ineffective and that the system may have an underlying design flaw. I request that the NHTSA investigate these issues and take appropriate action to ensure Tesla addresses these safety concerns and honors its warranty obligations. I have attached documentation detailing the repair history, invoices, recall notices, and correspondence with Tesla. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I could not use navigation, crusie control, FSD, and all cameras. So, I brought in service to check but they could not fix the issue and want to replace car computer which i have to pay for the issue i did not cause. This is unresponsible that i got it from them. I am not sure if this manufacter defect or firmware issue that cause it. But this is not something that i have ability to cause it. Now with this safey recall i could not update software since there is no option for to do so.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-25
- VIN: 5YJYGDEE8LF
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: When I picked up my Tesla Y from a body shop I was informed that my two front tires were worn down, to the core, on the inside rim of the tire. It was as though they were aligned wrong. I was strongly encouraged to drive straight to a tire shop for new tires. At the tire shop two representatives confirmed it would be too dangerous to drive on my existing tires as they were very badly worn. I immediately bought 4 new tires and went to have them aligned. The alignment shop was unable to align the tires due to a worn out knuckle bushing.

Not sure why people complain about the ride quality on the performance version. We love ours! It handles incredibly well and it loves to lay waste to gas guzzling cars. So fast! We're never going back to a spewer. Electric cars are the future.

Hi there! It looks like the hatchback has the same features as before, but with more room and power. Isn't that great?

I received my car on May 31st, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was initially worried about potential issues, given the complaints I had read online. However, I was relieved to find that my vehicle only had a minor gap issue that doesn't affect its functions, and it has been working well for over 11 months now. To me, the Model Y is like a sports car in SUV form. Compared to my previous Lexus RX, this one definitely has more personality and better performance! Even my wife's Lexus IS doesn't come close. Going on a steep climb on a highway is so effortless, thanks to the powerful electric motors. I found that I can achieve the advertised EPA range estimate with about 70% city and 30% freeway driving. What I love about the Tesla Model Y are its pervasive supercharger network and seamless charging integration, over-the-air software updates, great driving experience, roomy interior and storage, and (still in beta) full self-driving capabilities. I can't think of many things I dislike about the car, because every time I'm out on the road, I just enjoy the driving experience.

This car is truly amazing! I previously owned a LR AWD Model 3, but needed more space for my small family. I decided to trade it in for a LR AWD Model Y and I couldn't be happier. The Model Y takes everything that is great about the Model 3 and makes it bigger, with more cargo space, legroom, and headroom. Although it may not have the same sporty drive due to its larger profile, I believe that pretty much everything else is better. From the practicality to the heat pump, it's a huge step up!

The driving experience is absolutely sublime when it comes to acceleration and handling. I have found the seat comfort and quietness to be unmatched in previous cars, including Lexuses. I must say that my buying experience was better than with dealers. Additionally, the service costs have been nonexistent to date.

Hi there! I had my first experience with a Tesla Model Y in early August 2020. Unfortunately, I had to go back a few times for services, and each time it took a couple of days. They didn't come as a 'mobile service' as stated, and I couldn't even order a loaner in advance due to Tesla's policy. It wasn't cool to be without a car for a few days, even though Uber was offered. I've never experienced such issues with a brand new car before, and the customer service wasn't great either. I miss owning a Mercedes, which always felt like a more luxurious treat.

The Elon fest is not living up to expectations. While it has great speed and some impressive technology elements, it falls short in fit and finish, and its range performance is worse than advertised. Additionally, there have been reports of a nauseous AC smell and fast degrading tires. As a result, I would not consider buying a Tesla again.

The Tesla Y's heater stopped working, leaving my family to freeze in zero-degree weather, despite the car being only a month old. Unfortunately, the only option for service is through the app, with no easy emergency call available. As a confident statement, I would like to assure you that this issue will be resolved promptly and efficiently, as Tesla prides itself on providing top-notch customer service.

Constant battery and motor problems have taken away the joy of riding my car and made me anxious when driving it. I always worry if it will stop and won't start again or if I will make it to my destination. However, I must say that the car drives beautifully! The interior design is a bit Spartan and the suspension could be softer, but overall it's a great car.

I'm afraid they might be disappointed when they have to deal with all the problems.
