Tesla Model y problems

The Tesla Model Y is a battery electric mid-size crossover SUV produced by Tesla, Inc. since 2020. The vehicle was presented in March 2019 as the company's fifth production model since its inception after the Roadster, Model S, Model X and Model 3.
After its 2019 introduction, the Model Y started production at the Fremont Factory in California, US in January 2020. Production at Giga Shanghai, China was added in December 2020, and at Giga Texas, US since late 2021. Deliveries from Giga Berlin, Germany started in March 2022.
The Model Y is based on the Model 3 sedan, with around 76 percent of parts being shared between the two. While most Model Y are configured with two-row seating, in the US the Model Y offers optional third-row seats for a seven-passenger seating capacity.
In 2023, Tesla delivered 1.2 million Model Ys, making it the world's best-selling vehicle that year, surpassing Toyota Corolla and becoming the first electric vehicle to claim that title. With at least 2.16 million units delivered since its start of production up to December 2023, the Model Y is also the most popular electric vehicle of all time.

- Summary: After being parked on a suburban street for about 3 hours, our Tesla Model Y experienced a complete loss of power-steering assist, requiring extreme hand-over-hand effort to turn the wheel and making it dangerous to drive. Warnings of "Steering assist reduced" and "Lane departure avoidance features unavailable" appeared on the display. After a 3-week wait, we finally got the vehicle to Tesla service, who diagnosed the issue and claimed that it was due to "...rodent damage to steering rack harness". They claim to have repaired the damage and the vehicle is again usable. Repair bill was $990. I have the vehicle and it is available for inspection. I cannot verify cause of the issue nor the repairs as they are not visible without a partial disassembly of the vehicle. No parts were returned to me (as I requested), so I must assume that none were actually replaced.

- Summary: I own a 2020 Tesla Y with Hardware version 3 and after a few weeks of a free trial, purchased Tesla's Full Self-Driving Software (FSD) version 12.3.6. Since then, the FSD software was updated to version 12.5.4 and then 12.5.4.1. FSD version 12.3.6 had some safety issues. But version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 has had more issues that have resulted in nearly having accidents that I have had to suddenly avoid. FSD version 12.3.6 issues: 1. Wandering outside of center yellow dividing stripes when on a curvy two-lane roadway 2. Failing to yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn and oncoming traffic was not clearly in view due to a curvy two-lane road 3. Attempting to make a left turn into a busy intersection when the turn signal was still red FSD version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 additional issues: 1. Attempting to enter a two-lane roadway from a stop sign, when the perpendicular traffic was active and they had no stop sign, requiring me to slam on the brakes. 2. Sudden and erratic braking on a two-lane roadway, including directly under a signal, when no objects, people or other vehicles were in front of me, which nearly resulted in the vehicle behind me hitting me in the rear 3. Software sending a tone and screen alert to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to a "System Failure." 4. Software sending a tone and screen alert that to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to "one or more cameras blocked," when no cameras were blocked.

- Summary: The car locked my toddler inside his car seat because the 12v battery died died as soon as we put him in his seat and closed hid door. There was absolutely no warning before that battery had died, indicating that it was low. Because of the way a Model Y is designed, there is no mechanical way to open the door when the 12V battery dies. The toddler is incapable of manually unlocking the door from inside when the electrical button doesn’t work. This is a huge safety issue and can result in death of children if not resolved by Tesla

Tesla service technician found bolt had backed out and jammed on rear subframe. This caused vehicle to pull to the right and presented a potential safety issue. The bolt secures a link between the wheel assembly and subframe. Tesla service center claims that I must have had an accident or hit a pothole etc. The vehicle has not been involved in any accident or hard bumps. I suspect this is an assembly issue . A properly installed bolt would not come loose.

- Summary: Tesla has automatic windshield wipers that are supposed to engage at various wiper speeds when rain is detected. The system does not activate soon enough or at an appropriate speed. Example: In rain situations on a highway when passing a large truck, the amount of spray on the windshield will completely occlude visibility at critical moments. Also if driving through a neighborhood in a drizzle, when kids are walking to school, the wipers do not adjust properly occluding visibility at critical moment’s. Potential solution : In both cases above the Tesla cameras detect the truck and the pedestrians, this data should be used to increase wiper activation and frequency. Tesla also collects user input data from drivers and perhaps collecting data when drivers activate their wipers compared to what the cameras are seeing will help adjust the wiper activation algorithm.

- Summary: I have been getting "RCM2_a626" error for "front passenger safety restraint system fault. It comes and goes. Apparently it is a common issues among tesla owners. When I first filled for the error they quoted $2000 for replacing front passenger seat. The error went away so I canceled the appointment. Then it came back in a random fashion and getting more frequent. This time, in addition to replacing the front passanger seat cushion, "they're retrofitting "SBR in OCS Equipped Front Passenger Seat." I'm not sure what that means. If this is a common issue, there must be something to do with manufacturer QC.

- Summary: we were in a head-on collision (not our fault) in April. The police determined the combined speed of the crash impact to be 60-65 miles per hour. The 2020 Tesla Y did not deploy its airbags. And as far as we can determine, the accident was not automatically recorded by the Tesla as it should have been. Because the airbags did not deploy, I sustained a fracture to my sternum that traverses over to my collarbone. We both have TBIs and other injuries. With that kind of an impact, one would expect an airbag to protect oneself, yet it did not. There were no warning lights/messages/etc from our vehicle. We are asking that you please look into this safety matter. (Especially since you are part of the push to have us own electric cars, they need to be safe for us). I do not know how much longer the Tesla will be available to inspect.

Vehicle year: 2020
I recently purchased a Model Y to replace my daughter's Jeep that she took to college. I opted for this model over a new BMW X3 and it has been a completely new driving experience for me. One of my favourite features is the fact that I don't have to use the brakes for all highway and most stop-and-go driving. The autopilot with auto lane change is also a great addition. After just two weeks with it, I feel awkward switching back to a conventional car. The vehicle is spacious and has excellent acceleration, as well as a great sound system with many modern features. Although there have been some manufacturing issues with the headlights and taillights assemblies, some body panels not being well aligned, and some loose plastic panels in the trunk area and rubber gaskets around the doors, I assume these issues will eventually be resolved with time. So, if you can wait a bit, it may be worth it. For me, the early driving experience with this technology outweighs the wait.

I've had my Model Y for six months now and it's been a great investment. I got it as a hedge against not being able to get petrol, given government policies. The pros are numerous: it's fast, the seat comfort is the best, handling is good (though not quite BMW-like), home charging is a big plus, the tech is superb, and the build quality has been good except for one annoying rattle. I haven't had to charge on the road yet, but knowing Tesla has the best network allays my range anxiety. One pedal driving is also great. When I had to use the Tesla Service Center, they were very good, but unfortunately there was no provision to ask questions. Taking delivery was shorter in time than gassing up my ICE vehicle. The only cons I've found are the lack of Apple CarPlay and S-XM, an annoying rattle, no ventilated seats, and poor rear visibility. While the minimalist design is nice, there's too much reliance on the center touchscreen with too much buried in the menus. Having to go into the touch screen to open the glove box is too much, and the same goes for the wipers, etc. There's too much reliance on the Tesla app and no provision for asking questions in advance. I do worry that once Tesla opens up the Supercharger network, we'll have waits for all the other models that will crowd in. However, overall, if you're going electric, Tesla is definitely the way to go... now!

Vehicle year: 2020
It's great to see so many reviews from owners, even those who may not be completely satisfied with the Model Y. While it may be considered an expensive car, it's important to remember that Teslas are first and foremost pieces of technology with wheels. As pioneers in the industry, it's understandable that some may feel the Y is a bit overpriced. However, my personal experience with the Y has been nothing short of amazing. From the firm ride that keeps me connected to the road, to the well thought out interior and extremely comfortable seats, I have loved every moment with my Y. Even the backseat is surprisingly roomy, comfortably accommodating my family of four, all of whom are over 6 feet tall. Overall, I highly recommend the Model Y to anyone looking for a unique and enjoyable driving experience.Hey there! I've heard from some friends that the Model Y has more room than you might expect from the outside. Just keep in mind that it's built for a maximum of 5 people, so if you have 3 kids and will consistently be riding at full capacity, you may want to consider other options. Overall, if you're looking for a car similar to the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 and want to reduce your carbon footprint, the Model Y is a great choice!

Vehicle year: 2020
After we ordered our new Model Y, we came across several reviews that made us nervous. Some of them talked about the body panels not aligning and poor paint quality. However, when our Y was delivered to our home by the dealer touchless, we did a complete inspection of the vehicle and found no body alignment issues. The paint was applied perfectly and looks phenomenal. We ordered the multi-coat red, which added a little to the purchase price, but it was well worth it. This vehicle has amazing speed, much better than our I.C.E. (Acura RDX), which we thought was pretty peppy. It handles beautifully. Although the lack of gauges, speedometer, etc. was a little disconcerting at first, we quickly found that the touch screen was not a problem or challenge. The regenerative braking was an easy transition after driving for a short while. There are different settings available to allow you to set the braking to your comfort. We chose 'hold'. With this setting, as you reduce pressure on the accelerator, the car will begin to slow down. If you remove your foot completely, the car will come to a complete stop over a reasonable distance. You still need to monitor and gauge when and if you need to fully apply the brake. We especially like the fact that regenerative breaking actually takes the energy from the car's momentum and feeds it back to the battery. Plus, there is less need to replace brake pads, etc. Although the touch screen is a bit daunting at first, with the Tesla online tutorials, other owner's YouTube videos, and the readily available manual, we are mastering it with ease. We have added a matte protection screen to eliminate unwanted sun glare and fingerprints. The center console comes in piano black and is a fingerprint magnet. We had it wrapped in carbon fiber to eliminate this problem. This was done after-market.It's great to hear that you're considering the Tesla Y! One thing we've noticed is that it has a surprising amount of cargo space, even more than our Acura RDX. Additionally, there's plenty of leg and head room, and the windshield offers a wide view. While the back window is a bit small, the great side mirrors and sensors make up for it by advising if another vehicle or object is too close. Overall, we highly recommend the Tesla Y if you're in the market for an all-electric vehicle. Thanks for considering it!

Tesla has done the R&D and has the superior infrastructure for EVs. We really liked local driving the Tesla Model Y Longrange, as we did all our charging right at home in the garage. We really didn't know how advanced this EV was for doing long trips until we started driving long trips. The 300 plus mile range is great and quite frankly after240 miles, we were ready to stop and use facilities and grab a sandwich & drink. By the time we were ready to leave (25 minutes or so) we were fully charged again. I know that non Tesla charging stations just can't perform like this. We simply plug in and the charge station automatically does everything including charge rate and billing. With the new 250 super chargers, and charging was unbelievably quick. Don't get suckered by those manufacturers trying to follow Tesla's lead.

Vehicle year: 2020
I recently returned an Audi Sportback after its lease ended and decided to switch to a Tesla Model Y. To provide some context, my other car is a 2020 Volvo XC90. In my experience, the Model Y's ride quality is not great, especially on the rough roads in the NYC area. It's quite bumpy and you'll feel every little imperfection on the road. I've even had to lower the tire pressure to make it more bearable. The steering is also a bit vague and doesn't inspire much confidence at high speeds. However, the acceleration is impressive and the range is decent, providing around 250 miles on a full charge. The technology is mostly good, although some features feel a bit gimmicky. The sound system is decent, but not as good as the upgraded speakers in luxury vehicles. The seats are comfortable and supportive, but they do feel a bit cheap. Overall, while the Model Y has its flaws, it's still a decent car with plenty of space and legroom. It may not be the best fit for those used to luxury brands and sports cars, but it's still worth considering.Autopilot is okay, but it is basically useless without FSD. It won't change lanes and will deactivate the auto steering, making a loud alert noise. However, the pilot assist in Volvo is not as advanced, but at least it will not deactivate auto steer when you change lanes, which some may find more useful. If you just want to follow a car in a lane, then this works, but so do every other adaptive cruise control with stop and go that comes standard in basically every car nowadays. This is an honest review after owning it for 3 months now. I read a review in MotorTrend, in which they said the ride quality of this car is worse than pickup trucks. Amen. I didn't test drive, and it's my fault. I was trigger happy sitting at home during Covid-19. I also happened to read the MotorTrend review after buying this car. Update Sep 2021 after 11 months of ownership - I dropped the rating to 1 star. The ride is just unbearable. Recently, we rented a Kia while on vacation abroad, a cheap compact car, which had a better ride than this. The car now has a lot of rattles and noises coming from the headliner, back seats, seat belts, etc. Autopilot is unreliable as anything. I really can't understand why people call it great and advanced. Without FSD, it's useless unless you want to follow a car in a single lane without changing it till your destination. Full range has now dropped to 306 from the 326 originally. Also, you rarely get more than 225-250 in a single charge unless you baby it. Handling is so poor and almost dangerous at higher speeds. The sound system and technology are the saving grace in an otherwise poorly made, half-baked product with a lot of fandom.

We recently experienced an issue with our brand new Model Y, which unfortunately resulted in some damage to our garage. Despite having less than 450 miles on it, the car accelerated unexpectedly and drove itself into the back of the garage, causing damage to both the car and the wall. We had the car towed to the Tesla service center, where it was evaluated by the unintended acceleration team after a few weeks. Although we were disappointed that Tesla denied any problem with the car and would not release the event data recording, they did inform us that we could recover the data ourselves if we purchased a $2000 set up from Tesla. As owners of a Tesla Model 3, we are very familiar with the Tesla platform and electric cars in general. We have reported the issue to the National Traffic Safety Administration and have hired a law firm to represent us in arbitration with Tesla. We hope that Tesla will acknowledge the issue and work towards a resolution. We encourage anyone considering purchasing a Tesla to do their research and make an informed decision. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I purchased a MY performance model in August 2021, but unfortunately it was gone by December 20th. While I loved the performance - no pun intended - there were just too many challenges. As someone who enjoys driving and going places in my car, the Tesla hamstrung me too much. I found myself constantly having to stop and charge, which was a hassle. It didn't help that I didn't have a home charger due to my older electric (100amp service), which made things even more difficult. Additionally, the 21 inch wheels made for a rough ride and the car had a 'tinny' feel, like it was cheaply made. The reliance on the screen for everything also made it less user-friendly. In my opinion, it would have been a good 'second' car, but it's not quite there yet for me. Of course, your mileage may vary. All in all, I'm not against Teslas, but they still have some room for improvement.

The Tesla Model Y is a promising vehicle that offers a glimpse into the future of transportation. However, based on my personal experience with a three-year lease, it may not be ready for prime time just yet. I encountered some issues with battery life, tires, wheels, software, windshield wipers, and door handles. Despite these challenges, the digital experience is very cool, and the updates are an interesting idea. The Tesla team is competent and nice, and they are always ready to help with any issues that arise. Overall, the Tesla Model Y has great potential, and I look forward to seeing how it evolves in the future.Yet, unfortunately, the product they received was not up to the expected standard, and they were not given an apology or financial compensation for the issues that should have been covered under warranty. During my lease, I noticed that Elon took control of Twitter/X, and it was interesting to observe the car's brand value decrease during this time. Some people may be concerned about this when considering the brand. In my opinion, one person does not represent the entire company, but it is understandable to be brand conscious. Overall, I was disappointed with this car and would not recommend it. However, I remain open-minded about the EV category and look forward to seeing improvements in battery technology. For my next car, I am considering a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.

Tesla auto service can be improved. Consider booking appointments in the afternoon and hiring more staff to handle customer inquiries. Additionally, the all-glass roof may not be suitable for those living in hot climates. Tesla should work on improving the reliability of their electronics. While my personal experience has not been ideal, I believe Tesla has the potential to improve and provide better service in the future.
