Tesla Model y problems

The Tesla Model Y is a battery electric mid-size crossover SUV produced by Tesla, Inc. since 2020. The vehicle was presented in March 2019 as the company's fifth production model since its inception after the Roadster, Model S, Model X and Model 3.
After its 2019 introduction, the Model Y started production at the Fremont Factory in California, US in January 2020. Production at Giga Shanghai, China was added in December 2020, and at Giga Texas, US since late 2021. Deliveries from Giga Berlin, Germany started in March 2022.
The Model Y is based on the Model 3 sedan, with around 76 percent of parts being shared between the two. While most Model Y are configured with two-row seating, in the US the Model Y offers optional third-row seats for a seven-passenger seating capacity.
In 2023, Tesla delivered 1.2 million Model Ys, making it the world's best-selling vehicle that year, surpassing Toyota Corolla and becoming the first electric vehicle to claim that title. With at least 2.16 million units delivered since its start of production up to December 2023, the Model Y is also the most popular electric vehicle of all time.

- Summary: After being parked on a suburban street for about 3 hours, our Tesla Model Y experienced a complete loss of power-steering assist, requiring extreme hand-over-hand effort to turn the wheel and making it dangerous to drive. Warnings of "Steering assist reduced" and "Lane departure avoidance features unavailable" appeared on the display. After a 3-week wait, we finally got the vehicle to Tesla service, who diagnosed the issue and claimed that it was due to "...rodent damage to steering rack harness". They claim to have repaired the damage and the vehicle is again usable. Repair bill was $990. I have the vehicle and it is available for inspection. I cannot verify cause of the issue nor the repairs as they are not visible without a partial disassembly of the vehicle. No parts were returned to me (as I requested), so I must assume that none were actually replaced.

- Summary: I own a 2020 Tesla Y with Hardware version 3 and after a few weeks of a free trial, purchased Tesla's Full Self-Driving Software (FSD) version 12.3.6. Since then, the FSD software was updated to version 12.5.4 and then 12.5.4.1. FSD version 12.3.6 had some safety issues. But version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 has had more issues that have resulted in nearly having accidents that I have had to suddenly avoid. FSD version 12.3.6 issues: 1. Wandering outside of center yellow dividing stripes when on a curvy two-lane roadway 2. Failing to yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn and oncoming traffic was not clearly in view due to a curvy two-lane road 3. Attempting to make a left turn into a busy intersection when the turn signal was still red FSD version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 additional issues: 1. Attempting to enter a two-lane roadway from a stop sign, when the perpendicular traffic was active and they had no stop sign, requiring me to slam on the brakes. 2. Sudden and erratic braking on a two-lane roadway, including directly under a signal, when no objects, people or other vehicles were in front of me, which nearly resulted in the vehicle behind me hitting me in the rear 3. Software sending a tone and screen alert to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to a "System Failure." 4. Software sending a tone and screen alert that to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to "one or more cameras blocked," when no cameras were blocked.

- Summary: The car locked my toddler inside his car seat because the 12v battery died died as soon as we put him in his seat and closed hid door. There was absolutely no warning before that battery had died, indicating that it was low. Because of the way a Model Y is designed, there is no mechanical way to open the door when the 12V battery dies. The toddler is incapable of manually unlocking the door from inside when the electrical button doesn’t work. This is a huge safety issue and can result in death of children if not resolved by Tesla

- Summary: Brought the vehicle in for tire replacement and alignment on 08/15/2024. Right front tire was wearing on the outside. Tesla service technician found bolt had backed out and jammed on rear subframe. This caused vehicle to pull to the right and presented a potential safety issue. The bolt secures a link between the wheel assembly and subframe. Tesla service center claims that I must have had an accident or hit a pothole etc. The vehicle has not been involved in any accident or hard bumps. I suspect this is an assembly issue . A properly installed bolt would not come loose.

- Summary: Tesla has automatic windshield wipers that are supposed to engage at various wiper speeds when rain is detected. The system does not activate soon enough or at an appropriate speed. Example: In rain situations on a highway when passing a large truck, the amount of spray on the windshield will completely occlude visibility at critical moments. Also if driving through a neighborhood in a drizzle, when kids are walking to school, the wipers do not adjust properly occluding visibility at critical moment’s. Potential solution : In both cases above the Tesla cameras detect the truck and the pedestrians, this data should be used to increase wiper activation and frequency. Tesla also collects user input data from drivers and perhaps collecting data when drivers activate their wipers compared to what the cameras are seeing will help adjust the wiper activation algorithm.

- Summary: I have been getting "RCM2_a626" error for "front passenger safety restraint system fault. It comes and goes. Apparently it is a common issues among tesla owners. When I first filled for the error they quoted $2000 for replacing front passenger seat. The error went away so I canceled the appointment. Then it came back in a random fashion and getting more frequent. This time, in addition to replacing the front passanger seat cushion, "they're retrofitting "SBR in OCS Equipped Front Passenger Seat." I'm not sure what that means. If this is a common issue, there must be something to do with manufacturer QC.

- Summary: we were in a head-on collision (not our fault) in April. The police determined the combined speed of the crash impact to be 60-65 miles per hour. The 2020 Tesla Y did not deploy its airbags. And as far as we can determine, the accident was not automatically recorded by the Tesla as it should have been. Because the airbags did not deploy, I sustained a fracture to my sternum that traverses over to my collarbone. We both have TBIs and other injuries. With that kind of an impact, one would expect an airbag to protect oneself, yet it did not. There were no warning lights/messages/etc from our vehicle. We are asking that you please look into this safety matter. (Especially since you are part of the push to have us own electric cars, they need to be safe for us). I do not know how much longer the Tesla will be available to inspect.

Vehicle year: 2020
Before purchasing the car, we did a fair amount of research, mostly by watching YouTube videos. As first-time electric car owners, we were impressed with its performance. It's faster than my G37 and as practical as my MDX. The free charging stations in town make the true cost of ownership better than any true competitor. It's hard to find a car this fast with this much practicality at such a reasonable price. We opted for black on black with 20-inch wheels and added tint and paint protection for the front bumper. The fit and finish of this car are very good, and we haven't had any issues so far. We love the speed, handling, and not having to use gas! However, we did encounter some issues with the wheels and tires. If we were to buy again, we would choose the smaller wheel as the ride quality, cost, and efficiency are all worse with 20-inch wheels. The tires don't even last 20k miles.

We received our car in December 2020 and had one issue with a sticking door. However, a technician came to our house and fixed it promptly. We absolutely love the acceleration, comfortable seats, and the convenience of charging at home. We decided to lease this Tesla, but we are already planning to buy the next one. We are extremely satisfied with our purchase. Additionally, we found that Apple CarPlay is unnecessary on the Tesla because their system is already excellent.

Vehicle year: 2022
Great to hear that you're enjoying your car! After your first 2 months and nearly 2,000 miles, it's impressive how much you're loving it. The seats are amazing, the car is nearly silent, and the power is uncanny. Commuting over 100 miles round trip every day can be tiring, but this car makes it almost enjoyable. The standard autopilot system is very relaxing to use, and it works so well that the full self-driving option may not be necessary. Although the center display focused controls are a bit odd, it's great to hear that you're getting used to the minimalist approach. The sound system is excellent, although it would be even better if CarPlay was included. The car is roomy, well screwed together, and best of all, no stops for gas!

Vehicle year: 2022
I'm already into week two with my new Tesla Model Y - Long Range and I must say, it's a winner! I'd give it 4-4.5 stars because of some notable absences, but more on that below. The buying process was a breeze and taking delivery was faster than gassing up my other vehicle. The build quality is excellent, with no issues to report. I find it very comfortable to drive and the size is just right. Acceleration is more than adequate, and while I'd rather have the additional 25 miles of range than the 3.6 second 0-60 acceleration, 4.8 seconds from 0-60 is fine for me. There are loads of after-market add-ons available, and the handling is great. I love the one-pedal driving, and I bought this car as a hedge against expensive gas or none at all. Range anxiety was something I worried about, but home charging takes care of that. It's nice not to have to drive to a gas station, although I suppose living in a condo or apartment would not be as great. In preparation for our annual long trips, I simulated what it would be like charging on the road from the Tesla website. Unlike some other networks, Tesla has Superchargers all over the place, and where there is a gap, there is an EA site, so I got a CCS to Tesla adaptor. So, a 21-hour trip by a gas BMW will now be a 23-hour trip by Tesla. Bye-bye range anxiety! I love the tech; it's intuitive, but some might find it daunting. Doing everything via the Tesla app is a big step forward. Now, for the shortcomings: there's no HUD, no Sirius X-M, no cooled seats, no Apple Carplay, and no mini dash directly in front of the driver. But the Tesla music bundle is fine, so I'm okay without Sirius-XM. However, it gets hot here in Florida, and I sure would like ventilated seats. So, I'm managing without these, but I hope Elon gets the message. I thought of the Model's S and X, but the price increase was daunting, as was the absence of a gear shift lever and directional signal stalk. Forward-looking tech can go too far. But overall, I love it and am pleased with the purchase. I would unreservedly recommend it!

Vehicle year: 2023
I recently purchased a 2021 Model Y after the height of Covid. Unfortunately, the purchase procedure was not very pleasant. However, I would like to remind future buyers to bring their smart phone as it is required to acknowledge the purchase using it. During my visit, I noticed that a customer next to me had an issue with one of their doors not unlocking, but luckily my slightly misaligned doors functioned correctly. Tesla gives you 10 days to report any initial problems, which is a good policy. Overall, the build and material quality are okay, but could be improved for the luxury segment. I have had some issues with trapped moisture obscuring my cameras after rain storms, but Tesla replaced one of the cameras. Unfortunately, the replacement camera was not sealed properly. There are also some oversized/uneven gaps between some body panels, and one door edge has a sharp point where the metal bends. The road noise and cabin vibration is okay, but not great. In comparison, our Volvo S60 was almost 20K cheaper and had better materials, seat comfort, noise isolation, and build tolerances. The rear speakers are mounted to the inside hatch door, so sound quality is affected when the trunk is filled with bags/luggage. Lastly, my battery range has dwindled to less than 85% in two years. Despite these issues, I must say that the dual engine is very fast and the acceleration is super smooth. The cabin is also very roomy and the storage is ample. The sound system is very good, although the interface could use some improvement. The car feels fairly nimble and has great inch-by-inch control when backing into tight spaces or sloped roads/driveways. Although I was not impressed with my customer experience at Tesla, I must say that the pickup process was very efficient and only took about 30 minutes since the financials were all worked out ahead of time. The rear and side cameras provide great visibility, although the poor visibility through the rear window is compensated for. The Supercharger network in CA is fairly extensive and works well, but I mostly charge from home. The Infotainment system has a lot of features and supported services (Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Tune-In, et cetera), but the complex interface can be too distracting while driving. It would be better if the car had more buttons and less screen swiping. The voice recognition for phone and navigation system (addresses) is actually quite decent.

We purchased the Model Y in September 2023 and noticed a significant crack in the roof just six months later. Unfortunately, this issue is not covered under warranty as it is not considered a stress crack. However, we are taking the necessary steps to replace the glass, despite the cost. While we were disappointed with the quality of the glass, we take safety concerns very seriously. We cannot recommend this product at this time.
Sofia Kilback 2025-03-12
Vehicle year: 2021
The best part about this car is how fun it is to drive, especially on winding mountain roads. The acceleration is instantaneous and addicting, and the steering is fairly communicative with no body roll. Additionally, the infotainment system is responsive and has never crashed or had any software issues. Despite its size, the interior is spacious and has plenty of storage. However, there are a few downsides to consider. Firstly, for a car at this price point, the interior is disappointing. It feels cheap and the materials are plain and boring, unlike the sportier seats, inlays, and steering wheel you would expect from a Mercedes AMG or BMW M series car. Secondly, the front seats are too narrow and uncomfortable, causing numbness after just 20 minutes. Thirdly, the lack of an electric sunshade for the glass roof is a letdown, as aftermarket sunshades with cheap plastic hooks are not a premium solution. Fourthly, rear visibility is non-existent, so relying on cameras is a must. Despite these issues, the fast charger network is impressively fast and was one of the reasons I chose the Tesla over other EVs.The last UI upgrade made the screen less intuitive and more difficult to use. It can be dangerous when driving due to the number of steps required to perform simple tasks. Although voice commands are available, only half of them actually work. The phone key is the worst attribute, as the car only recognizes my phone 50% of the time when I approach it. It can be a huge inconvenience, especially when carrying shopping bags or in the rain. While the car is supposed to be advanced, a regular remote key would be much better. The performance suspension is also too stiff, but this can be mitigated by using 19

I'm not entirely sure why some people refer to it as a luxury car. The build quality seems a bit fragile and the road noise can be quite bothersome. Personally, I miss my C-300. However, for the time being, I'm keeping it because there aren't many good options for EVs yet, and if you're interested in technology, Tesla can be quite fun. If you're looking for a comfortable luxury car, you might want to consider other options. While the FSD software is useful and the stop sign recognition is cool, it's important to note that it won't be fully self-driving anytime soon due to the many edge cases in driving. They'll need to go beyond computer vision. One other thing I've realized is that if you're buying an EV for daily commuting and don't plan on using it for long-range travel, you have more options. I haven't driven the car more than 50 miles in a day, but with daily charging, there haven't been any issues, even if the battery only has a range of 150 or 200 miles. It's worth considering how often you'll actually use the car for long-range travel and whether you really need a long-range battery.

Although the experience with my new Tesla Y was not ideal, I was able to identify several areas that required attention. These included the fit and finish, the alignment of the center console and doors, malfunctioning USB-C chargers, and rattling in the rear view mirror console. Despite the initial response from the Tesla Store, I was able to work with them to address these issues. While the repairs were not perfect, they were within the manufacturer's tolerances. Ultimately, I decided to trade in the car, but I am confident that Tesla will continue to improve their products and services in the future.

I've been the proud owner of the 2023 Model Y since March 2023 and overall, I really like the car. However, I have a few safety concerns that are major for me. Firstly, there are no aural or visual warnings for perpendicular crossing traffic while in reverse, which can be dangerous. Secondly, the cameras don't provide a wide enough view to see past the width of the driveway by more than a few feet, nor are they clear enough to spot pedestrians walking behind the car while backing out of a parking space. Although there is a warning on the screen for traffic in lanes on either side of the car, it can be difficult to see if the car is in a blind spot. I was surprised to find that Tesla does not have a yellow warning light in each side view mirror, as my 2014 Camry did. Lastly, while on cruise control, the car goes into an abrupt braking for no reason if there is a vehicle crossing perpendicular to the road I am on. If given a choice, I would much prefer an aural warning first, and then automatic braking if needed. I hope that the 2024 models will address these issues, and new buyers will appreciate the improvements.
