Tesla Model y problems

The Tesla Model Y is a battery electric mid-size crossover SUV produced by Tesla, Inc. since 2020. The vehicle was presented in March 2019 as the company's fifth production model since its inception after the Roadster, Model S, Model X and Model 3.
After its 2019 introduction, the Model Y started production at the Fremont Factory in California, US in January 2020. Production at Giga Shanghai, China was added in December 2020, and at Giga Texas, US since late 2021. Deliveries from Giga Berlin, Germany started in March 2022.
The Model Y is based on the Model 3 sedan, with around 76 percent of parts being shared between the two. While most Model Y are configured with two-row seating, in the US the Model Y offers optional third-row seats for a seven-passenger seating capacity.
In 2023, Tesla delivered 1.2 million Model Ys, making it the world's best-selling vehicle that year, surpassing Toyota Corolla and becoming the first electric vehicle to claim that title. With at least 2.16 million units delivered since its start of production up to December 2023, the Model Y is also the most popular electric vehicle of all time.

- Summary: After being parked on a suburban street for about 3 hours, our Tesla Model Y experienced a complete loss of power-steering assist, requiring extreme hand-over-hand effort to turn the wheel and making it dangerous to drive. Warnings of "Steering assist reduced" and "Lane departure avoidance features unavailable" appeared on the display. After a 3-week wait, we finally got the vehicle to Tesla service, who diagnosed the issue and claimed that it was due to "...rodent damage to steering rack harness". They claim to have repaired the damage and the vehicle is again usable. Repair bill was $990. I have the vehicle and it is available for inspection. I cannot verify cause of the issue nor the repairs as they are not visible without a partial disassembly of the vehicle. No parts were returned to me (as I requested), so I must assume that none were actually replaced.

- Summary: I own a 2020 Tesla Y with Hardware version 3 and after a few weeks of a free trial, purchased Tesla's Full Self-Driving Software (FSD) version 12.3.6. Since then, the FSD software was updated to version 12.5.4 and then 12.5.4.1. FSD version 12.3.6 had some safety issues. But version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 has had more issues that have resulted in nearly having accidents that I have had to suddenly avoid. FSD version 12.3.6 issues: 1. Wandering outside of center yellow dividing stripes when on a curvy two-lane roadway 2. Failing to yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn and oncoming traffic was not clearly in view due to a curvy two-lane road 3. Attempting to make a left turn into a busy intersection when the turn signal was still red FSD version 12.5.4 and 12.5.4.1 additional issues: 1. Attempting to enter a two-lane roadway from a stop sign, when the perpendicular traffic was active and they had no stop sign, requiring me to slam on the brakes. 2. Sudden and erratic braking on a two-lane roadway, including directly under a signal, when no objects, people or other vehicles were in front of me, which nearly resulted in the vehicle behind me hitting me in the rear 3. Software sending a tone and screen alert to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to a "System Failure." 4. Software sending a tone and screen alert that to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to "one or more cameras blocked," when no cameras were blocked.

- Summary: The car locked my toddler inside his car seat because the 12v battery died died as soon as we put him in his seat and closed hid door. There was absolutely no warning before that battery had died, indicating that it was low. Because of the way a Model Y is designed, there is no mechanical way to open the door when the 12V battery dies. The toddler is incapable of manually unlocking the door from inside when the electrical button doesn’t work. This is a huge safety issue and can result in death of children if not resolved by Tesla

- Summary: Brought the vehicle in for tire replacement and alignment on 08/15/2024. Right front tire was wearing on the outside. Tesla service technician found bolt had backed out and jammed on rear subframe. This caused vehicle to pull to the right and presented a potential safety issue. The bolt secures a link between the wheel assembly and subframe. Tesla service center claims that I must have had an accident or hit a pothole etc. The vehicle has not been involved in any accident or hard bumps. I suspect this is an assembly issue . A properly installed bolt would not come loose.

- Summary: Tesla has automatic windshield wipers that are supposed to engage at various wiper speeds when rain is detected. The system does not activate soon enough or at an appropriate speed. Example: In rain situations on a highway when passing a large truck, the amount of spray on the windshield will completely occlude visibility at critical moments. Also if driving through a neighborhood in a drizzle, when kids are walking to school, the wipers do not adjust properly occluding visibility at critical moment’s. Potential solution : In both cases above the Tesla cameras detect the truck and the pedestrians, this data should be used to increase wiper activation and frequency. Tesla also collects user input data from drivers and perhaps collecting data when drivers activate their wipers compared to what the cameras are seeing will help adjust the wiper activation algorithm.

- Summary: I have been getting "RCM2_a626" error for "front passenger safety restraint system fault. It comes and goes. Apparently it is a common issues among tesla owners. When I first filled for the error they quoted $2000 for replacing front passenger seat. The error went away so I canceled the appointment. Then it came back in a random fashion and getting more frequent. This time, in addition to replacing the front passanger seat cushion, "they're retrofitting "SBR in OCS Equipped Front Passenger Seat." I'm not sure what that means. If this is a common issue, there must be something to do with manufacturer QC.

- Summary: we were in a head-on collision (not our fault) in April. The police determined the combined speed of the crash impact to be 60-65 miles per hour. The 2020 Tesla Y did not deploy its airbags. And as far as we can determine, the accident was not automatically recorded by the Tesla as it should have been. Because the airbags did not deploy, I sustained a fracture to my sternum that traverses over to my collarbone. We both have TBIs and other injuries. With that kind of an impact, one would expect an airbag to protect oneself, yet it did not. There were no warning lights/messages/etc from our vehicle. We are asking that you please look into this safety matter. (Especially since you are part of the push to have us own electric cars, they need to be safe for us). I do not know how much longer the Tesla will be available to inspect.

Vehicle year: 2021
We absolutely love our Model Y Performance! The handling and performance are excellent, making every trip exhilarating. The front seats are very comfortable and have copious adjustments. In the 27,000 miles we have owned our Tesla, we have not had to return to the dealer for any problems. People frequently stop us to chat about our Model Y, which is always a fun experience. While the factory fit and finish may not match most other vehicles, we still highly recommend it. There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to adjusting most car functions on a computer screen, but it's a new experience that we find exciting. Driving on mostly flat interstates in the Midwest gives us a comfortable, realistic range of 225 miles, which is far short of the claimed 303 miles. However, we have found that driving around town, hilly or slow-speed driving may give us as much as 30 miles per 10% of battery energy. When reaching the risky limit of about 250 miles, it's best to be at the charging station. Note that due to regeneration of battery charging on deceleration, driving in stop and go traffic gives better mileage than highway driving. Our Model Y Performance came with 'summer tires', which means it's not recommended to drive in ice or snow and/or temperatures much below freezing. We suggest parking it until Spring or changing to all-season tires. Installing mud flaps and applying the accessory plastic protectors on the front curve of the rear fenders is recommended. We also paid to have a plastic wrap professionally installed over the entire front bumper to protect it from bugs and other road debris. As far as recharging is concerned, we just plug the car into a 115v 12amp wall or outside outlet using the factory mobile connector. We highly recommend the Model Y Performance to anyone looking for an exciting and comfortable driving experience! This connector was included with the car when I purchased it, but now it is a $200.00 option. However, charging the battery from a regular outlet is a slow process. To charge the battery faster, you can use a home 240 volt outlet, such as the one used for your electric clothes dryer. If you live in an apartment or do not have a garage, there are other options available. Another common concern is finding recharging stations when you are away from home. We frequently drive our Tesla on interstate highways and there are many Tesla-installed 'Superchargers' available nationwide. However, they are not as common as gas stations, so it is important to remain vigilant about your remaining charge. It is not necessary to maintain your electric vehicle battery at or near full charge, just as it is not necessary to keep the fuel tank in your gasoline car full. If you experience a breakdown, such as running out of battery or getting a flat tire (without a spare), you can contact Tesla Road Assistance for rescue via the car's computer or your mobile phone. This service is available for the four years of factory warranty. If you are not experienced with a high-performance vehicle, it may be prudent to reduce the power from 'sport' to 'chill' on the control menu until you have mastered the vehicle. Inexperience with this fast vehicle can lead to a bad outcome.

I had a great experience testing and buying a Tesla. The staff were all nice, but I found more help online than in-store. After testing several EVs from other brands, the Tesla Y felt truly special. It drove well, was super comfortable and intuitive, and no other EV felt as unique. Other brands struggled to be car-like and were just fussy and unnecessary. The runner-up for me was the Ioniq 5 LTD, but it was more expensive and the dealer experience was a turn off. Tesla just lets you demo the vehicle, and I took it out several times. The only warning is to carefully follow referral program rules as Tesla won't budge if you botch the sequence ahead of placing an order. Aside from that one snafu, it was as easy as ordering and picking up an iPhone. The updates were decent, the Tesla crew was always kind and helpful, and I didn't feel beat up by the sales process. I've owned a lot of cars over the years, and none are as comfortable and sporty as the Y. I love the simple design, it has the best stereo I've ever experienced, and charging and connectivity are seamless. Most of all, there's not an overwhelming brand play with Tesla. You get in, tap the brake, and drive. I rented a Tesla while visiting my family, and my only gripe was the valet key, which is no substitute for the phone key connectivity. If Hertz just bought Tesla fobs for their fleet, the experience would have been much better. With the card, you don't get the same perimeter detection as with a fob, which can feel a bit out of sync with the greatness of their phone key and app. However, I have no concerns about the build quality or any other rumors. The EV feels solid and is an absolute blast to drive. Overall, it feels way ahead of the dated MFG + dealer network one has to muddle through. I can definitely see myself driving this EV for a long time. Best of luck with your search!

Vehicle year: 2021
We went from a disappointing BMW X5 to a car that we both truly enjoy driving. Thanks to a Canadian tax adjustment, all-electric vehicles used for business purposes can be depreciated by $50,000 in the first year, which saved us a lot in taxes right away. With premium gas prices going over $1.50 a litre, the fuel savings are huge. Despite having a busy household with fridges and freezers, the added electricity use is barely noticeable. The $600 Tesla charger was installed in about 3 hours by our electrician, and it was a breeze. We have an existing 200 amp panel, and the car charges overnight when needed. The smartphones serve as the keys, and we got used to the touch screen in minutes without any help. If we can do it, anyone can. We bought the car in December and immediately got snow tires. Due to the poor local roads, we went with 18-inch rims for more cushioning, and the ride is somewhat firm anyway, so it's a bit smoother with more rubber. Fit and finish problems seem to be a thing of the past, and our car is as well put together as our neighbours' two Subarus. We haven't bothered to nitpick as it doesn't seem to warrant the time. It's well laid out, and we love the minimalist styling. The cargo space is huge, certainly enough for most real estate staging, and the front and back seats have lots of room. We drove 200 km in mid-winter at -25 with a full load of 3 adults and their skis, clothing, food, cat, etc., and it used about 50% of a charge, leaving us with 88% to 38%. There was still plenty left to run around and then hit the Supercharger at the grocery store. A 40-minute charge is about what it takes to get around the market. The range drops in the cold, no question, but you shouldn't be driving if you can't figure that out. My Volvo goes from a summer range of 500 km to a winter range of 350 km per tank, so it's not unknown to vary. The car has more acceleration than we will ever use, and the power delivery is nice and smooth, so much nicer than a fossil car. We've driven 8000 km, and we haven't needed any services yet. I suppose it will tell us if needed. The previous X5 had been in the shop twice by then.I highly recommend this vehicle for families. Two of my friends have Model 3s and have had similar positive experiences. As of the May 2022 update, we have driven almost 30,000km and have not needed any services, which has saved us a lot of money. The best part is not having to spend money on gas, which can cost between $1.90 to $2.09 per liter for regular and up to $2.40 for high test. To go 400 km, it takes about a tank of gas or one electric recharge at home. While gas would cost around $150.00, a home charge would only cost around $8.00. Even charging at the Supercharger would only cost about $35.00, which is still a significant saving. Aside from the observation that Elon can be difficult, the Tesla and the Supercharger network are both genius. If Ford, GM, and other companies don't step up and build a proper charging network to compete with Tesla, they will never be able to compete. Unfortunately, non-Supercharger installations are poor and second-rate compared to what I have seen so far. It's a shame because I would like to check out an electric Ioniq in the future. Overall, I highly recommend going electric. It's like going from dial-up to 5G.

I recently purchased the Model Y Performance and I am absolutely in love with it! As a 42-year-old male, I can confidently say that this car has made driving fun again. The pros are endless: the acceleration and instant torque at any speed are truly impressive, and the one pedal driving is a game changer. I love how the car comes to a stop by itself and automatically holds the car in place when stopped. The fact that I don't need keys and can just use my cell phone to get in and out is fantastic - everything turns on and off automatically. The music and movies sound amazing, and the free autopilot works great, making short or long trips much more pleasant. Supercharging is simpler than a gas station, and the navigation to chargers is automatic in the maps. The remote control of the car via the app for climate, charging, video monitoring, cracking windows, unlocking, etc. is wonderful to use, and the car is always at the right temperature. As an anal engineer, I had zero issues with quality control - they must have really improved. With the performance, I have had so many people comment on how good the car looks. Grey with Uber wheels and a white interior is the way to go if you want a good looking car. No more gas stations, oil changes, brake replacements, and having free miles with my solar system is great! Plus, it's cheaper than every other competitive EV with this performance level. When comparing with the rebates I got, it's 17k less than Mach E GT and 24k less than EV6 GT. And the best part? I don't have to deal with the crooks at the dealership. Super easy pick up and no extra fees. I just bought a Ford Maverick also and they tried to drop $2900 bucks of extra crap on a $28k truck! Never again. The only con I can think of is that it's a somewhat rougher riding car compared to the LR, but it's way better than my Mustang, and it's much faster than the Mustang. Plus, it's a performance car with sweet looking low profile tires, so it's expected. Overall, I highly recommend the Model Y Performance to anyone looking for a fun and reliable car.I highly recommend this car! It has great speed and a sleek look that make it worth the investment. While it can be a bit noisy on the road due to its lowered ride and low profile tires, it's important to remember that this is a performance SUV. Although it doesn't have CarPlay, the existing system is still very functional. I do wish the maps showed police locations like WAZE, but that's a minor issue. The only downside is that native garage door control requires paying for MyQ, which costs $48 a year. However, it does work very well. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and love driving this car. It's a great value and has no competition from Tesla. Buy one!

I love my Teslas! My first one was an early production 2018 Model 3 and my newest addition is a 2021 Model Y. I've owned both M and C class Mercedes in the past, but I prefer the ride quality of my Teslas. They may not float like a Benz, but I'll take that any day over the endless costly engine troubles I experienced with my previous cars. I even drove my Model 3 from NYC to CO without any issues! While I do agree that Tesla could improve its human interaction and accessibility, I have to say that this Model Y is an absolute joy to drive. The seats are comfortable and it runs quietly. I haven't had any panel gap or paint issues, and my only complaint is that they no longer include NEMA adapters. Ordering and delivery were a breeze, and I'm so happy to have avoided the shady car dealerships. I do think that once more legacy brands come out with range-worthy full EVs, Tesla will have to step up its feature offerings. However, those legacy brands will also need to have a comparable supercharger network to compete with Tesla.

As a new Tesla Model Y owner, I was hoping for a seamless journey with a cutting-edge electric vehicle. Unfortunately, my experience has been anything but smooth. I encountered a mysterious crack in the front windshield within the first month, which Tesla attributed to a rock strike. Although I found this explanation perplexing, I had to bear the repair costs of approximately $2000. During my drive from Redmond, WA to Portland, OR, I faced a blown tire in a blizzard. Tesla's roadside assistance was not very helpful, and their suggestion to book a hotel and wait for service was impractical given the severe weather conditions and my family's well-being. Although they eventually sent a service truck to replace the tire, their insistence on taking the damaged tire to their service center was another point of frustration. The discovery of a second damaged tire, with an additional cost of $420 for replacements, was a significant inconvenience, causing us to miss work and school. Comparing my experiences with cars from other brands like Nissan, Toyota, and Honda, I can't recall facing such issues. My decision to switch to Tesla was driven by a desire to embrace environmentally friendly technology and to benefit from the purported long-term economical advantages of an electric vehicle. However, this series of events has led me to question my decision. As of now, I'm left with the task of coordinating the retrieval of my tire from Portland and addressing the bubble in the second tire, which renders my car undriveable.Hello! I just wanted to remind you that every purchase, especially one as significant as a vehicle, comes with its own set of challenges. I hope you don't mind me sharing my experience as a Tesla owner. It's not just about the technical difficulties, but also about the expectation of support and service that should accompany any high-end product. I remain hopeful for a resolution and believe that sharing my story might help others in making informed decisions. My journey with Tesla continues, and I'm eager to see if the coming weeks bring about a change in my current perspective.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my long range model Y that I've been driving for 2 months now. According to the site, it should drive 326 miles, but I've noticed that it usually drives around 260-270 miles on a full charge. Even with completely shut off climate control and no passengers, my car only drives a maximum of 200 miles per full charge. Based on my experience, I don't think I can recommend it. Instead, you might want to consider a hybrid Acura which gives almost 50 mile/gl.

I recently purchased a TESLA and unfortunately experienced some issues with the car. The driver's window malfunctioned and the tire light came on within two months of owning the vehicle. Although it was inconvenient to have to take the car to the service center, the staff were able to assist me in a timely manner. While I did have a disagreement with the service center regarding a tire replacement, I appreciate their efforts to resolve the issue. Overall, my experience with TESLA has been mixed, but I do appreciate the eco-friendly aspect of the car. I would recommend doing thorough research before investing in this technology.

I've been the proud owner of the 2023 Model Y since March of the same year and, overall, I really like the car. However, I do have a few safety concerns that are important to me. Firstly, there are no aural or visual warnings for perpendicular crossing traffic while in reverse, which can be a bit of a worry when backing out of our driveway onto a 30 MPH street. Additionally, the cameras don't provide a wide enough view to see past the width of the driveway by more than a few feet, nor are they clear enough to spot pedestrians walking behind the car while backing out of a parking space. While there is a warning on the screen for traffic in lanes on either side of the car, it can be difficult to see the warning for the car to the left if it's in a blind spot. I was surprised to find that Tesla doesn't have a yellow warning light in each side view mirror, as my 2014 Camry did. Lastly, while on cruise control, the car will abruptly brake if there is a vehicle crossing perpendicular to the road I'm on, even if it doesn't warrant taking my foot off the gas pedal. If given a choice, I would much prefer an aural warning first, and then automatic braking if needed. I hope that the 2024 models will address these issues, as I would have preferred to wait for the improvements.

We were excited about the idea of owning an electric vehicle and decided to go all-in with a Tesla. We opted for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to our expectations. We found out that the feature couldn't be used at night due to the interior camera monitoring the driver's alertness, which was a bit disappointing. However, we understand that safety is a top priority. We did experience some phantom braking, which was a bit scary, but overall, the Model Y was a great car. We eventually decided to trade it in due to the issues mentioned above, as well as our love for spontaneous off-road trips, which made charging a bit of a challenge.
