1999 Suzuki Grand vitara problems
The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).
The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.
The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.
The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.
The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common 1999 Suzuki Grand vitara problems
Based on the information provided in the sources, here is a detailed list of common problems with the Suzuki Grand Vitara 1999 based on complaints from owners:
- Air Conditioning Problems:
- The air conditioning system in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 1999 is prone to failure, leading to a lack of cold air blowing from the system.
- The main issue is often related to a failing condenser, which hinders the system from blowing out ice-cold air on the coldest settings.
- Replacing the air conditioning condenser is necessary to resolve this issue, although it can be relatively expensive.
- Timing Chain Cover Gasket Leak:
- Owners have reported oil leaking around the timing chain cover, a common problem in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 1999.
- This leakage is typically caused by a failing timing chain cover gasket, which may also result in a ticking noise from the timing chain.
- To address this issue, replacing the timing chain cover gasket is essential to prevent further leaks, while replacing the tensioner may be necessary to stop the ticking noise.
- Faulty Passenger Seat Sensor:
- A common complaint involves the seatbelt alarm sounding even when the front passenger seatbelt is secured.
- This issue is often attributed to a faulty passenger seat sensor, particularly prevalent in later models of the Suzuki Grand Vitara.
- Replacing the sensor is a straightforward solution to resolve this problem and prevent unnecessary alarms.
- Engine Stalling and Sputtering:
- Owners have experienced engine stalling and sputtering issues in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 1999, commonly linked to water pump failures.
- The water pumps in this model are prone to seizing up, which can lead to a slip in the timing belt and subsequent engine stalling.
- Resolving this issue typically involves ordering a new water pump and timing belt to ensure the engine operates smoothly.
These common problems reported by owners of the Suzuki Grand Vitara 1999 highlight key issues related to the air conditioning system, timing chain cover gasket leaks, faulty passenger seat sensors, and engine stalling and sputtering. Addressing these concerns promptly and with the appropriate repairs can help maintain the performance and reliability of the vehicle.
What is the common problem with Suzuki Grand Vitara?
The Grand-Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps, which are prone to seizing up. Those pumps run off the timing belt, so seizure leads to a timing belt slip which is causing the engine to stall. In most cases, you will need to order both a new water pump and a new timing belt from BreakerYard.
