2002 Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-01-31
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JS3TD62V424
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: MY 2002 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA (LIMITED 4WD) WAS INVOLVED IN A SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH. IT WAS A HILLY STRETCH OF HIGHWAY NEAR PITTSVILLE, MO AND THERE WAS A LIGHT DUSTING OF SNOW JUST STARTING TO FALL. THE CRUISE CONTROL MADE THE CAR JUMP INTO A LOWER GEAR WHEN ASCENDING A HILL TO KEEP IT AT 55 MPH. THE RPM'S JUMPED FROM ABOUT 2,000 TO 5,000 WHEN THE CAR SHIFTED INTO 3RD GEAR - WHICH CAUSED THE TIRES TO LOSE TRACTION AND I WRECKED INTO 2 HIGHWAY SIGN POSTS AND SKIDDED SIDEWAYS ABOUT 50 YARDS INTO THE CENTER MEDIAN. IT WAS A MIRACLE THAT I DIDN'T ROLL OVER SEVERAL TIMES. IT COST ME $5,000 IN COLLISION DAMAGE TO FIX THE CAR. THE CRUISE CONTROL DOES THIS ALL THE TIME STILL WHEN EVEN ON MODERATE HILLS TO KEEP UP WITH THE SET MPH. IT IS A DESIGN FLAW IN MY OPINION. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR THAT NEEDED TO JUMP UP TO OVER 5,000 RPM'S JUST TO GO 65 MPH AND STAY UP WITH THE SET CRUISE SPEED. THANKS. DWS *TR

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-01-01
  • VIN: JS3TD62V524
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I AM WRITING ABOUT THE SEAT BELTS IN MY 2002 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA. THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT FREQUENTLY LOCKS UP AND DOESN'T ALLOW THE PERSON WEARING IT TO MOVE. I FIND IT VERY ANNOYING AND POTENTIALLY UNSAFE AS WHOEVER IS IN THAT SEAT USUALLY ENDS UP UNBUCKLING IT AND NOT PUTTING IT BACK ON. THIS ALSO HAPPENS IN THE REAR SEATS, ALTHOUGH IT ISN'T AS MUCH OF A PROBLEM AS I GENERALLY DON'T HAVE REAR PASSENGERS. I ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BOTH FRONT BELTS NOT RETRACTING FULLY WHEN WE EXIT THE VEHICLE, I CHECKED WITH THE DEALER, BUT REPLACING THE RETRACTOR WAS QUITE EXPENSIVE AND I FEEL THIS IS A DEFECT AS SEAT BELTS SHOULD LAST LONGER THEN A FEW YEARS. *NM

THE POPPING NOISE CONTINUED ALONG WITH HARD BRAKING, AND THE VEHICLE WAS PULLING TO THE RIGHT IN WHICH THEY STATED THAT THE REAR BRAKES FAILED ALONG WITH THE STRUTS. • Summary: AFTER SEVERAL MISDIAGNOSES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY CAR GOING INTO GEARS THE PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED TWO MONTHS AFTER THE CAR WENT OUT OF WARRANTY. I WAS CHARGED TO FIX THE PROBLEM WHICH WAS COMPLETELY UNFAIR. THE FIRST TIME I BROUGHT THE CAR IN THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID I WASN''T PUSHING HARD ENOUGH ON THE BRAKE. THE SECOND TIME HE SAID IT WAS DO TO THE COLD WEATHER. THE THIRD TIME HE SAID THAT UNTIL THE CAR COULD NEVER GET BACK INTO GEAR HE WAS UNABLE TO FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY. THE FOURTH TIME HE FIXED A PART AND IT STILL HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THE FIFTH TIME I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER SUZUKI DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THE OTHER DEALERSHIP DID NOT INSTALL THE PART CORRECTLY. THEN THE SIXTH TIME THEY SAID IT IS A DIFFERENT PART AND FIXED IT AND CHARGED ME BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS PROBLEM TOOK ONE YEAR AND ONE MONTH TO FIX. THE DISTRICT MANAGER SAID BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY THAT HE WOULD NOT APPROVE THE COST OF FIXING IT. EVEN THOUGHT THE PROBLEM STARTED AFTER ONLY TWO YEARS OF ME OWNING THE CAR AND WAS CLEARLY BACK WHEN IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THE CAR TO THIS DATE STILL DOESN''T HAVE 30,000 MILES ON IT.

Negative 2002 Suzuki Grand vitara car reviews

  1. Boyd Kuphal 2024-11-14

Since it was new, it has been wandering all over the road and has had 9 front-end alignments, but unfortunately, it will not hold them for more than a week. It needed struts, front brakes, a fuel tank, and the computer went bad. The four-wheel drive also stopped working, and the tires need to be replaced at only 9000 miles. Other than that, there are no other problems to speak of...

  2. Albin Lakin 2024-11-13

This car was a decent buy for the money. Although it has an annoying squeaking that the dealer can't seem to fix, it has good amounts of power with 5 speed. The car also has very good lights and provides a smooth driving experience on the interstate. While it may not be the heaviest car on the road and can bounce a bit, it is an inexpensive SUV that provides good value for its price.

  3. King Reichel 2024-08-15

Overall, I have had some issues with the car, particularly with the alignment, door locks, body molding, radio, and tires. Unfortunately, the dealer has not been very attentive and has not been able to resolve the issues despite multiple attempts. However, I do appreciate the car's good pick-up and sturdiness. While I would not personally buy another car from this brand or recommend it, I understand that everyone's experiences may differ. As for the dealer, I cannot recommend Bill Seidel based on my own experiences. Thank you for taking the time to read my feedback.

  4. Dameon Predovic 2024-07-14

You'll find that it performs well in snowy conditions.

  5. Bell Hodkiewicz 2024-04-12

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Suzuki cars. I've had two so far, my first one was a 1987 Samari which I had for 15 years, and now I have a 2002 model. While the 2002 had a few recalls, I made sure to keep up with all the recommended maintenance and it was a reliable and fun vehicle... until recently. Unfortunately, I've been told that the engine needs to be replaced and it's been at the dealer for over two weeks with no estimated completion date. On the bright side, the dealer was quick to give me a rental car. I do miss my Suzuki and I'm hoping it comes home soon! In the future, I might consider leasing a vehicle instead of buying. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2002 Suzuki Grand vitara car reviews

  1. Keshawn Feil 2024-11-29

You have a great looking car! I noticed that it's a black LTD with a front bush bar, rear spoiler, running boards, MP3 player, and chrome after-market AR alloy rims. Sounds awesome!

  2. Jimmy Murray 2024-10-27

Very happy. Great vehicle with great service. Excellent value.

  3. Deshaun Price 2024-10-18

Overall, it's pretty good! The ride can be a bit harsh in cold weather, but it's more tolerable in warm weather. After 14,500 miles, the dash rattles a little, but the paint job still looks new and the rest of the vehicle is solid. It's never been taken off-road and has very few highway miles.

  4. Travis Hudson 2024-10-06

We purchased this vehicle two weeks ago and, overall, we are satisfied with it. However, we did encounter some issues with the cargo area cover, which did not snap out as easily as stated in the owner's manual. Unfortunately, we had to break ours to remove it. Additionally, we have experienced some rattling from the back door, which can be annoying at times. Despite these minor setbacks, we still believe that the Grand Vitara is a great vehicle!

  5. Joel Daniel 2024-08-28

I've owned this vehicle for two years and it has been trouble-free. It gets between 21 and 25 miles per gallon and the engine is powerful enough for this car. If you're looking for a small SUV, this is a great choice. However, if you're looking for a sportscar or an SUV that rides like a Caddy, this may not be the car for you. I believe the person who rated this car a 1.1 may have had a bad experience and should have considered a more expensive, larger car. This car is a great value for the money! I've never had a car that held its value like this one. I've always had to sell or trade them in at a loss.
