2003 Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common 2003 Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Grand Vitara, produced from 1997 to 2016, is known for its reliability and cross-country ability. However, like any vehicle, it has common problems that owners have reported over the years.

  • Clutch Failed: The 2010 Grand Vitara has faced clutch failure issues, with an average repair cost of $2,000 and typically occurring at around 11,000 miles.
  • Turbo Failure: The 2008 Grand Vitara has experienced turbo failure, with an average repair cost of $12,600 and typically happening at around 27,000 miles.
  • Not Working Properly: The 2004 Grand Vitara has had problems with various components not functioning correctly, with an average repair cost of $1,200 and typically occurring at around 79,000 miles.
  • Air Conditioning Problems: Owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly the condenser fan motor failing, making it difficult for cool air to blow through the system.
  • Timing Chain Problems: Drivers have experienced problems with the timing chain, particularly when the tensioners fail, causing a rattling noise from the engine. The average quote for a timing chain replacement on a Suzuki when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar is £825.50.
  • EGR Valve Clogging: The Vitara is known for its EGR valve becoming clogged with carbon, causing problems such as loss of engine power and rough engine idling. The average quote for an EGR valve replacement on a Suzuki is £212.97 when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar.
  • DPF Problems: The Vitara's diesel particulate filter (DPF) is prone to issues, particularly due to the model needing regular clean oil changes.
  • Power Steering Issues: Some Grand Vitara models have experienced problems with the power steering, specifically the pulley belt adjuster pulley, which can deteriorate and break due to heat and weak plastic components.
  • Airbag Issues: There have been instances of the front passenger side airbag becoming loose, which is not a common issue but should not be ignored. Replacement airbag units are available, but due to the safety and chemical hazards associated with airbags, it is recommended to have professionals install them.
  • Water Pump Seizure: The Grand Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps seizing up, which can cause the engine to stall. In most cases, both a new water pump and a new timing belt will need to be ordered to resolve this issue.

These common problems should be considered when purchasing or maintaining a Suzuki Grand Vitara, but they do not necessarily detract from the vehicle's overall reliability and cross-country ability.

  • VIN: JS3TD62V534
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THIS COMPLAINT IS RELATED TO AN EXISTING RECALL ON MY 2003 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA. WHILE DRIVING TWO DAYS AGO, THE THROTTLE CABLE BECAME STUCK AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP ACCELERATING. I WAS ULTIMATELY ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND TURN IT OFF. AFTERWARD, I DISCOVERED AN OPEN RECALL FOR THE THROTTLE CABLE HOUSING. HOWEVER, THE RECALL WAS ISSUED BEFORE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW FROM THE SUZUKI DEALER IN 2004. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ON JANUARY 9, 2004, THE RECALL WAS ISSUED IN DECEMBER 2003. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS ILLEGAL FOR SUZUKI TO HAVE SOLD THE VEHICLE WITH AN OPEN RECALL. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL. SUZUKI'S NEGLIGENCE PUT ME IN GREAT DANGER AND RESULTED IN TOWING AND OTHER COSTS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE RECALL WAS PROPERLY HANDLED BEFORE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I HAVE CONTACTED SUZUKI MOTORS OF AMERICA TO DESCRIBE THIS PROBLEM, BUT THERE ONLY OFFER IT TO FIX THE RECALL ITEMS FREE OF CHARGE. THEY HAVE NOT ACKNOWLEDGED THEIR ERROR IN SELLING THE VEHICLE WITH AN OPEN RECALL, NOR ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ADDITIONAL COSTS I'VE INCURRED AS A RESULT OF THEIR NEGLIGENCE. *TR

Negative 2003 Suzuki Grand vitara car reviews

  1. Brad Schmidt 2024-09-16

This car has several issues, including transmission fluid leaks, oil burning, constant use of the A/C, and a rattling noise that is concerning. These problems began at only 18,000 miles, despite my regular maintenance efforts. However, I am confident in my ability to address these issues and find a solution to improve the car's performance.

  2. Clinton O'Keefe 2024-07-11

Overall, I have had some issues with the car, particularly with the alignment, door locks, body molding, radio, and tires. Unfortunately, the dealer has not been very attentive and has not been able to resolve the issues despite multiple attempts. However, I do appreciate the car's good pick-up and sturdiness. While I would not personally buy another car from this brand or recommend it, I understand that everyone's experiences may differ. As for the dealer, I cannot recommend Bill Seidel based on my own experiences. Thank you for taking the time to read my feedback.

  3. Eli Howell 2024-06-14

This car has experienced electronic issues since its inception. The air conditioner recently malfunctioned, and upon inspection, it was discovered that the hoses leading to and from the condenser had corroded. Additionally, the lights, speakers, and remote unlock features have all presented issues. However, we can confidently address and resolve these problems.

  4. Nathaniel Klocko 2024-04-03

Your car looks great both inside and out! However, it seems like it may not perform as well in snowy or rainy conditions.

  5. Orrin Bradtke 2024-01-18

Since it was new, it has been wandering all over the road and has had 9 front-end alignments, but unfortunately, it will not hold them for more than a week. It needed struts, front brakes, a fuel tank, and the computer went bad. The four-wheel drive also stopped working, and the tires need to be replaced at only 9000 miles. Other than that, there are no other problems to speak of...

Positive 2003 Suzuki Grand vitara car reviews

  1. Marcellus Hodkiewicz 2025-01-04

The 2003 GV is a fantastic compact SUV with plenty of power. It has the best power to weight ratio, 4WD system, and price in its class. The ladder box frame and McPherson suspension make for a great value. Don't overpay for a CRV, RAV4, Tribute, Santa Fe, Liberty, Xterra, Escape or Vue. The GV offers the best bang for your buck and has a better interior than all of the above. It handles very nicely too and is priced great at $$! However, it may not be suitable for families, serious towing, or very long driving trips. It also depreciates quickly and requires rust proofing every year to prevent rusting. Additionally, the sound system could be improved and the wind noise gets loud at 120 km/h. The engine can also get noisy at around 4000 RPM and the ABS feels a bit

  2. Jermey Terry 2025-01-03

I've only had my Grand Vitara for about 2 months, and it's my first time driving an SUV. I absolutely love it! It's roomy enough for my son, but not too big. The only downside is the gas mileage. I have to fill up 2-3 times a week, even though I don't travel out of town much.

  3. Milton Jacobi 2024-10-11

Hi everyone! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on my new car with you all. It's my first new car here in America, and I bought it straight from the dealer with zero miles. I absolutely love driving it every day, even for simple things like going to work. The v6 engine is really strong and has great pickup, and the brakes and comfort are top-notch. I can't say enough good things about this car - it's just beautiful! I feel like I made a great decision and saved a lot of money by buying it.

  4. Dario Boehm 2024-10-07

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Suzuki Grand Vitara Limited since 2/2002. It has been an absolute pleasure to own! I only had one recall on it, but I was notified of it promptly and it was taken care of. The only thing I wish it had were side-curtain airbags and a GPS system, but it seems like those features were added in the 2006 model. Thanks for listening!

  5. Charley Davis 2024-09-12

I'm so glad to hear that you're happy with your purchase! It sounds like it's just the right size for your lovely family of four.
