2000 Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common 2000 Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Grand Vitara 2000 is generally known for its reliability, but there are some common problems that owners have reported based on the search results.

  1. Faulty switchgear and controls: The JD Power customer satisfaction survey has highlighted some faulty switchgear and controls in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2000. This can include issues with the interior lighting, power windows, and other electronic features. It is recommended to check all switches and knobs to ensure they are functioning properly before purchasing a used Grand Vitara.
  2. Electrical issues: Electrical problems were a weak spot in the previous model, and the Grand Vitara 2000 has also experienced some electrical issues. These can include problems with the battery, alternator, and starter motor. It is important to check the service history for any missed stamps and buy only if there is a full record.
  3. Off-road damage: The Grand Vitara 2000 is known for its off-road capabilities, but this can also lead to damage to the underside, bumpers, and suspension. It is recommended to check for any off-road damage, particularly on the underside, bumpers, and suspension.
  4. Suspension-related recall: There was an important suspension-related recall on V6s and diesels over concerns that the studs on the front strut mountings may shear. Suzuki dealers fitted upper and lower reinforcement plates to the suspension turret and new strut mountings. It is recommended to check if the recall has been addressed in the vehicle's history.
  5. Power steering issues: Some owners have reported issues with the power steering, which can be caused by weak plastic components in the pump belt adjuster pulley. Heat is causing the plastic to deteriorate and break. If your Grand-Vitara is still under warranty, then a Suzuki dealer will usually replace the pulley for free. If you’re not covered by warranty, you can order a replacement pulley and install it yourself fairly easily.
  6. Airbag issues: There have been reports of loose airbags, particularly on the front passenger side. This isn't too common, but it's an issue that you shouldn't ignore. Replacement airbag units are available, but it is recommended to leave this job to professionals due to the safety risks and the presence of harmful chemicals and explosives in airbags.
  7. Air conditioning problems: The air conditioning condenser is known to fail, causing the air conditioning to not blow out ice cold air on the coldest settings. This can be an expensive part to replace, but replacement condensers are available at a lower price.
  8. Timing chain cover gasket failure: There have been reports of oil leaking around the timing chain cover, caused by the timing chain cover gasket failing. This can be fixed by fitting a replacement timing chain cover gasket.
  9. Faulty passenger seat sensor: Later models of the XL7 have experienced issues with the passenger seat sensor, causing the seatbelt alarm to sound even if the seatbelt is secured. New sensors are available and are easy to install.
  10. Water pump issues: The Grand-Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps, which are prone to seizing up. This can cause the engine to stall. In most cases, you will need to order both a new water pump and a new timing belt from BreakerYard.

These common problems should be taken into consideration when purchasing a used Suzuki Grand Vitara 2000. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues and ensure a long-lasting and reliable vehicle.

Negative 2000 Suzuki Grand vitara car reviews

  1. Korbin Schowalter 2024-09-29

I bought this car after doing extensive research. At first, I was thrilled with its great performance, adequate gas mileage, and its ability to carry a lot of stuff while still being able to convert easily for passengers. Plus, it's really fun to drive! However, I started experiencing mechanical problems around 40,000 miles. The front axle seal came out of position causing leakage three times, which was a very costly repair. Finally, the root cause was determined to be the ring and pinion. The dealer and Suzuki picked up the cost, but three months later, I had another costly repair involving the air conditioner. Although I love this car, I don't think I'll buy another one because of the many problems I've had. I must say, though, that the dealer service was excellent. I guess I was lucky there.

  2. Pierre Hills 2024-06-29

The vehicle has accumulated 40,000 miles and has undergone two tire replacements. It has been noted that there is a transmission fluid leak and oil consumption. The fuel efficiency is lower than the manufacturer's specifications. Overall, there are some areas of concern that require attention.

  3. Dane Koepp 2024-02-24

The air conditioning unit malfunctioned and it took approximately two weeks to receive the necessary replacement part. The car's gas mileage is only 17 mpg and there is a persistent vibration that is quite bothersome. Despite my efforts to contact Suzuki's 800# for the past two months, I have only been able to speak with the factory representative twice, and both times he informed me that he would be unavailable for approximately three weeks. While I have considered trading in the car, the significant depreciation of these vehicles means that the car is worth thousands of dollars less than the loan payoff.

  4. Alfonzo Greenholt 2024-01-24

I have owned this vehicle for two years and unfortunately, I have experienced numerous and costly repairs for leaking seals, transmission oil leaks and A/C problems. It has been a frustrating experience and I would not consider purchasing this type of vehicle again. I have found that my extended warranty has not covered any of the repairs and the service has been quite slow in returning the vehicle to me.

Positive 2000 Suzuki Grand vitara car reviews

  1. Merritt Yost 2024-11-27

Very well built SUV! The electronic 4WD operates great. The vehicle is very easy to handle because of its size, but also very comfortable inside. The interior is really nice, and all controls are conveniently located. There's lots of room, especially when the rear seats are folded down. The rear door/tailgate opens very easily and widely, making loading items extremely easy. I had a Suzuki Sidekick prior to this, which had 300,000 miles and was still running!

  2. Hilbert Brakus 2024-09-17

It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your Gran Vitari JLX+ for almost 2 years now! It's impressive that you haven't had to take it in for any repairs. By changing the oil and filter every 3000 miles and washing it once a week, you're taking great care of your mini SUV. If you're considering a mini SUV, I highly recommend choosing the Gran Vitari JLX+ over the Kia, CRV, RAV4, or Tracker. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I bought this car used and didn't know if we would like it. However, we love it! It's been great and we haven't had any problems.

I love it! I drove it for over 12 years in Miami, then had it shipped to Georgia. I drove it for another 8 years here, and then gave it to my son. Unfortunately, he wrecked it 😢. I should have kept it. I would love to buy another one.

I had this car for a year and I never had a problem. It accelerates quickly. The Grand Vitara will outspeed the Honda CRV, KIA Sportage, Toyota Rav4, and the Geo Tracker. This car is a great deal for the low price. It also provides a smooth ride. The engine is not loud when driving at high speed.
