1998 Ford E-150 problems
The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).
With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).
The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 1998 Ford E-150 problems
The Ford E-150 1998, like any other vehicle, has its share of common problems that owners have reported. One of the most common issues is an exhaust leak from broken manifold bolts. The exhaust manifold is responsible for collecting emissions from the engine, burning them up, and sending them out via the exhaust pipe. The manifold is bolted to the engine, which exposes it to extreme heat and temperature changes. Over time, the constant expanding and contracting can snap the bolts or studs that attach it to the engine, leading to an exhaust leak. This issue is more prevalent in the Ford Triton family of engines, which use aluminum heads instead of cast-iron. Aluminum expands more under heat than cast-iron, making it more likely to have snapped bolts or a cracked exhaust manifold.
The cost of repairing snapped manifold bolts can be quite high, around $1,200, due to the manual labor involved. The exhaust manifold is located at the heart of the van, making it difficult to access and work on. Therefore, unless you're a mechanic or very automobile-savvy, it'll be challenging to accurately judge the exhaust manifold bolts when viewing the van before buying.
Another common issue with the Ford E-150 1998 is related to the O2 sensors, specifically the P0156 code for bank2 sensor2. This code indicates a problem with the oxygen sensor, which measures the unburnt oxygen in the vehicle's exhaust system. A faulty oxygen sensor can lead to inefficient fuel burning, reduced fuel economy, and even damage to the spark plugs and catalytic converter. Replacing the faulty O2 sensor should resolve the issue, but if the problem persists, there might be another underlying issue causing the sensor to read incorrectly.
Lastly, acceleration problems in the Ford E-150 1998 can be caused by various issues, such as a loose gas cap, faulty oxygen sensors, or a weak battery. When the check engine light illuminates, it's essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to identify and address the root cause of the problem. Ignoring the check engine light can lead to more severe issues and costly repairs down the line.

We bought this thing when the kids were small. We've done very little to it besides routine maintenance. It's not practical in the city, but it's great for trips. We take it to horse shows and soccer trips. We can haul anything we want--and anyone. No problems with roominess. Gas mileage is comparable to a big SUV. Plus, it tows too!
-
This vehicle provided many reliable years of service and was our workhorse. It was even better than I expected. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The mileage was also better than expected.
-
I can understand your concern about the body roll caused by the large steel shell. The current mileage of 211,985 and fuel consumption can also be challenging. However, with proper maintenance, this vehicle can still provide a satisfying experience overall.
-
I bought this custom E 150 Van with 4.6/V8 to pull my boat and take my family on longer trips. It's a great vehicle with lots of space, and the TV/VCR keeps things quiet with the kids. It beats the SUV I had before the Van. The engine is strong enough, and the gas mileage is around 15-16 MPG on the highway. I've never had any mechanical problems, and winter tires make it drivable in the snow. I would definitely buy it again!
-
Your vehicle has been incredibly reliable and has required very little service. In fact, people often mistake it for a new car even though it's been 7 years since you got it. It might even become a collector's item!

The ownership experience of this vehicle has been frustrating due to the need for frequent repairs and maintenance. Despite spending $1000 to fix the issue, the vehicle still stalls upon backing. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the customization package overloads the chassis, causing these problems. As a result, I have decided not to purchase a Ford vehicle again.
Domenic VonRueden 2024-09-16
This van was a great work van, except for the transmission. I put 250,000 miles on it, but unfortunately had to replace the transmission three times. However, I did a lot of stop and go driving, which may have contributed to the issue.
Darron Jacobson 2024-09-03
During the two years that we owned the vehicle, we invested $6,000 in repairs. Despite our efforts, the van continued to experience issues, and we ultimately had to dispose of it. Unfortunately, we are still paying for the repairs we did. This experience has left us hesitant to purchase a Ford again. The repairs we did included the timing belt cover seal, alternator, new engine, and catalytic converter (which was the final straw). The van even let us down during a vacation in the first summer that we owned it. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience.
Hermann VonRueden 2024-07-21
Fortunately, I had purchased the 70000 mile extended warranty which proved to be a wise decision. Despite experiencing multiple issues with my vehicle, including a transmission failure at 50000 miles and an engine leak at 65000 miles, I was able to get them fixed with a new longblock. Although I faced some challenges with a faulty radiator that was replaced by Ford, which I had to pay for, I am still satisfied with my purchase. While the V6 standard engine may not be the best option, I am confident that newer models will perform better. It is worth noting that my 1990 model has 200000 miles on it and is still going strong. Overall, I would recommend this vehicle with the proper warranty and caution against the V6 standard engine.

Coolant leaks along with rebuilt engine at 42,000 (Yes, I did have the extended warranty, it is a Ford!). The van is slightly underpowered but works well for around town driving. The interior has a large cargo space and removable seats, making it very flexible.
