The Subaru WRX is an all-wheel drive sport compact car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru, originally based on the Impreza created for the World Rally Championship in 1992. Subaru claimed the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental". Starting with the 2015 models, the WRX lineup has been split from the Impreza, with a different body style that is not offered as an optional hatchback/wagon, being introduced as the separate Levorg model.

Impreza-based models (1992–2014)

The first three generations of the WRX, sold until the 2015 model year, were based on standard Impreza platforms, and replaced the Subaru RX hatchback and sedan.

The initial first-generation WRX models were based on the Impreza sedan (GC chassis code). They were followed by wagons (GF) in 1993 and the first upgraded WRX STi version, introduced in 1994. Several limited edition first-generation coupés were offered in the late 1990s and early 2000s which were never sold in the US and are highly sought after by Subaru enthusiasts.

The second-generation WRX (GD/GG chassis codes for the sedan/wagon, respectively) was brought over to the United States domestic market for model year 2002, with the STI being brought over for model year 2004. The initial "bugeye" front end styling (2000) was superseded by the "blobeye" in 2004 and the "hawkeye" in 2006. Under an agreement between Fuji Heavy Industries and General Motors, Saab sold its own version of the WRX, marketed as the Saab 9-2X, for the 2005 and 2006 model years. The 9-2X was available in both a standard (Linear) and performance (Aero) package, the latter was essentially identical to the second-generation WRX wagon, mechanically.

The third-generation WRX were sold as chassis codes GE (sedan) and GH (hatchback, replacing the earlier wagon version) initially; the third-generation WRX STI was sold with a widened chassis and was available only as a widebody hatch (GR). For the 2011 model year, the third-generation WRX sedan and hatch were moved to the GV and GR wide-body chassis variants, respectively, and a widebody sedan version of the STI (GV) was marketed. The Impreza was redesigned and the fourth-generation was first marketed for model year 2012, making it a distinct model from the WRX, which continued on the third-generation GV/GR chassis until 2014 in most markets.

The fourth-generation WRX were given the VA chassis designation and marketed as a separate model from the Impreza starting in 2015.

Common 2013 Subaru Wrx problems

The 2013 Subaru WRX is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners, including engine issues, transmission problems, and various other mechanical and cosmetic concerns.

One of the most significant issues is engine failure due to piston detonation. This problem is the subject of a lawsuit, which alleges that the piston detonation can cause severe damage to the engine, particularly to the piston and piston ringlands. The proposed class-action lawsuit includes all current and former owners or lessees of the 2009-2018 Subaru Impreza WRX and WRX STI, suggesting that this is a widespread problem affecting multiple model years.

Another engine-related issue is related to oil lubrication. The lawsuit claims that the engines allegedly have severe problems with oil lubrication to the bearings and crankshafts, which doesn't create enough lubrication to properly protect the engines from problems. This can lead to engine damage and failure, which can be costly to repair.

Transmission problems are also common in the 2013 Subaru WRX. One issue that has been reported is throwout bearing noise.

Cosmetic issues are also common in the 2013 Subaru WRX. For example, the windows may be crooked or have rattles, which can be distracting and may require adjustment or replacement.

Finally, it's worth noting that the 2013 Subaru WRX is subject to a recall for Takata airbag inflators, which can become unstable over time and lead to violent and sometimes deadly airbag deployments. The recall is for both driver and passenger side inflators in certain 2010-2014 model years, but is limited to certain states.

In summary, the 2013 Subaru WRX is known for several common problems, including engine failure due to piston detonation, oil lubrication issues, transmission problems, cosmetic issues, and a recall for Takata airbag inflators. These issues can be costly to repair and may affect the overall reliability and safety of the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-13
  • VIN: JF1GR7E61DG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING (AKA THROW OUT BEARING) IN THE VEHICLE PREMATURELY WEARS OFF, RESULTING IN LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. MY WRX MADE SQUEAKY NOISE IN THE COLD MORNING, BUT DISAPPEARS IN AFTERNOON. IT JUST COMES AND GOES, SO I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST NOISE AT FIRST. FEW DAYS LATER, I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, AND AS SOON AS I STEPPED ON MY CLUTCH, I FELT SOME GRINDING NOISE, AND WHITE SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT FROM MY FRONT HOOD. MY CLUTCH WAS NOT ENGAGING ANYMORE AND I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO CRUISE AND PULL THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY. MY TECHNICIAN SAID THE THROW OUT BEARING MAY SLIPPED OUT, CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION. SUBARU RELEASED NEW DESIGN FOR THEIR BEARING AND THERE IS A TSB FOR 2015-2017 SUBARU WRX, BUT NOT FOR 2011-2014, WHICH SHOULD BE FIXED TOO! HTTP://WWW.SUBISPEED.COM/INSTRUCTIONS/TSB-CLUTCH-RELEASE-BEARING.PDF THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT "THROW OUT BEARING" ON ONLINE FORUMS FOR SAME MODEL YEARS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ISSUE IN US ROADS...

POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-09-29
  • VIN: JF1GR7E64DG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE CLUTCH PEDAL ON MY 2013 WRX MAKES A LOUD CREAKING NOISE EVERY TIME IT'S DEPRESSED. WHEN I INVESTIGATED THE NOISE, I NOTICED THAT THE ENTIRE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET ASSEMBLY (ATTACHED TO THE FORWARD FIREWALL) SHIFTS APPROX 1/4 INCH EVERY TIME THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. I FOUND THAT THE THREE SPOT WELDS SECURING THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET TO THE FORWARD FIREWALL COULD BE BROKEN. FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE FIREWALL, JUST UNDER THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS, I SAW THE SPOT WELDS PULLING AWAY FROM THE FIREWALL EVERY TIME THE CLUTCH PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THIS ALLOWS THE ENTIRE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET ASSEMBLY TO MOVE, CAUSING THE CREAKING NOISE. IF THE BRACKET COMPLETELY SEPARATES FROM THE FIREWALL, THE CLUTCH MAY BECOME COMPLETELY INOPERATIVE - ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE ALSO READ ONLINE THAT THIS MANUFACTURING DEFECT CAN ALSO CAUSE YOUR CLUTCH TO GO OUT QUICKER. THE FIREWALL NEEDS TO BE RE-WELDED AND REINFORCED AND A NEW CLUTCH NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED. • Consequence: Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. Vehicles that were remedied under the previous campaign still need additional areas rust-proofed.
