2015 Subaru Wrx problems

subaru logo

The Subaru WRX is an all-wheel drive sport compact car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru, originally based on the Impreza created for the World Rally Championship in 1992. Subaru claimed the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental". Starting with the 2015 models, the WRX lineup has been split from the Impreza, with a different body style that is not offered as an optional hatchback/wagon, being introduced as the separate Levorg model.

Impreza-based models (1992–2014)

The first three generations of the WRX, sold until the 2015 model year, were based on standard Impreza platforms, and replaced the Subaru RX hatchback and sedan.

The initial first-generation WRX models were based on the Impreza sedan (GC chassis code). They were followed by wagons (GF) in 1993 and the first upgraded WRX STi version, introduced in 1994. Several limited edition first-generation coupés were offered in the late 1990s and early 2000s which were never sold in the US and are highly sought after by Subaru enthusiasts.

The second-generation WRX (GD/GG chassis codes for the sedan/wagon, respectively) was brought over to the United States domestic market for model year 2002, with the STI being brought over for model year 2004. The initial "bugeye" front end styling (2000) was superseded by the "blobeye" in 2004 and the "hawkeye" in 2006. Under an agreement between Fuji Heavy Industries and General Motors, Saab sold its own version of the WRX, marketed as the Saab 9-2X, for the 2005 and 2006 model years. The 9-2X was available in both a standard (Linear) and performance (Aero) package, the latter was essentially identical to the second-generation WRX wagon, mechanically.

The third-generation WRX were sold as chassis codes GE (sedan) and GH (hatchback, replacing the earlier wagon version) initially; the third-generation WRX STI was sold with a widened chassis and was available only as a widebody hatch (GR). For the 2011 model year, the third-generation WRX sedan and hatch were moved to the GV and GR wide-body chassis variants, respectively, and a widebody sedan version of the STI (GV) was marketed. The Impreza was redesigned and the fourth-generation was first marketed for model year 2012, making it a distinct model from the WRX, which continued on the third-generation GV/GR chassis until 2014 in most markets.

The fourth-generation WRX were given the VA chassis designation and marketed as a separate model from the Impreza starting in 2015.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-05
  • VIN: JF1VA1A64F9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I first noticed the car engine began making a loud ticking sound and significantly lost power as I exited the freeway heading toward my home after work. After towing the vehicle to the Subaru dealership, they tore apart the engine and found a connecting rod bearing had failed. It had slid out between the rod and crankshaft and shattered in the oil system sending shards of metal into the engine and all components that the oil touches. Every component that oil touches needed to be replaced. Prior to this problem, maintenance and oil changes were performed according to Subaru's specifications. Had the engine completely failed on the freeway during my commute home (during rush hour traffic) I could have caused an accident and possibly hurt myself and others. Subaru inspected and kept the components that were faulty though they never accepted responsibility for the failure of the components. There was absolutely no indication nor warning signal prior to the failure of the connecting rod bearing. Subaru blamed me for the component failure saying the vehicle was not properly maintained though they never asked me for proof of maintenance. I had to pay $7868 to repair the car to it's original mechanical state.

  • Summary: I OWN A 2015 WRX LIMITED CVT. WHEN I GO TO MY CAR TO GO TO WORK AND I START IT, THE CAR SPUTTERS. I'VE ONLY NOTICED THIS ON COLD STARTS ONLY, ONCE THE CAR IS WARMED UP IT'S FINE. FOR SOME REASON THOUGH WHEN THE CAR IS SPUTTERING ON START UPS IT WILL TRIP MY CEL AND BASICALLY PUT THE CAR INTO 'GET HOME' MODE, BUT IT ONLY SEEMS TO TRIGGER THE CEL WHEN IT WANTS TO. THE CAR WILL ALWAYS SPUTTER ON START UP BUT SOMETIMES THE CEL WILL COME ON AND I CAN'T USE THE DRIVE MODES AND SOMETIMES IT WON'T COME ON. NO MATTER WHAT I DO I CAN'T GET THE CAR TO STOP SPUTTERING. I'VE CLEANED PRETTY MUCH EVERY SENSOR I COULD AND NOTHING WORKED. I SCANNED THE OBD2 PORT AND GOT P0300 FOR RANDOM MISFIRE, WHICH TELLS ME ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-14
  • VIN: JF1VA1A65F9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ~70 MPH AND SUDDENLY LOST ALL THROTTLE RESPONSE, THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE ONLY LOOSE SPEED. ENGINE STARTED TO SHUTTER TO LOW RPMS, AND BECAUSE OF THIS DRASTICALLY LOST SPEED AND NEARLY GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC WHILE MOVING TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY TO PULL OVER. AFTER EVENTUALLY PULLING OVER, ENGINE CONTINUED TO SHUTTER TO LOW RPMS AND COULD NOT HOLD AN IDLE - WOULD JUST STALL AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO START IT UP. CAR WAS TOWED TO CLOSEST DEALERSHIP AND AFTER WAITING 4 DAYS FINALLY HEARD IT WAS THE ENGINE WIRE HARNESS THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. RESEARCHING THE ISSUE I FOUND THAT SUBARU MADE A DESIGN CHANGE FOR THE WIRE HARNESS TO PREVENT WATER/MOISTURE FAILURE WHICH IS MOST LIKE WHAT HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE. STUCK WITH A $1400 BILL DUE TO A DESIGN FLAW, I DECIDED TO PURCHASE A 2020 MODEL WHICH HOPEFULLY DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. AFTER CALLING SUBARU OF NORTH AMERICA AND EXPLAINING THE SITUATION, THEY OFFERED ME $1000 TOWARDS THE NEW PURCHASE. IT WAS A KIND GESTURE HOWEVER I QUESTION IF IT IS SOMEWHAT ADMISSION OF GUILT FOR THE DESIGN FLAW. 2015 WRX 138K MILES WAS METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED WITH ALL NECESSARY MAINTENANCE COMPLETED AT PROPER INTERVALS AND OIL CHANGES EVERY 3-4K MILES.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-10-08
  • VIN: JF1VA1G61F9
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: DECIDED TO GET MY SPARK PLUGS REPLACED, AND GOT A COMPRESSION TEST DONE WHILE THAT SERVICE WAS DONE FOR CONVENIENCE. COMPRESSION CAME OUT LOW ON ONE SIDE OF MY FA20DIT ENGINE. WITH MORE RESEARCH, BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS DIRECT INJECTED, THERE IS OBVIOUS BUILD UP ON THE INTAKE VALVES, CAUSING BAD AIR FLOW. THIS IS NOT A WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-04-30
  • VIN: JF1VA1J68F9
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY ON MY WAY TO WORK NOT FOLLOWING ANYONE CLOSELY. I DID NOT GO UNDER ANY OVERPASSES OR TREES AND I HAD MY SUNROOF CLOSED WITH THE SHADE VISOR OPEN AT THE TIME. ALL OF A SUDDEN MY SUNROOF EXPLODED OUT OF NOWHERE (LOUD BOOM) AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF GLASS FELL ON ME INTO THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY, THERE WAS NO ONE NEAR ME ON EITHER SIDE AND I KEPT MY COMPOSURE UNTIL I PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY TO LOOK AND CLEAR THE GLASS FROM MY SEAT AND THE PASSENGER SEAT. WHEN I INSPECTED THE SUNROOF GLASS, IT LOOKED LIKE SOME OF THE BROKEN PIECES ARE FORCED IN AN UPWARDS MANNER AS IF DUE TO PRESSURE OR TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATION. I CHECKED OVER THE REST OF MY VEHICLE AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS CHIPS AND DEEP SCRATCHES FROM THE GLASS THAT DAMAGED MY ROOF, SHARKFIN ANTENNA, AND MY TRUNK AREA WHICH I WILL NEED TO HAVE REPAIRED TO AVOID RUST. I WAS COMPLETELY SURPRISED BY THIS INCIDENT AND GOT A FEW SMALL CUTS ON MY HANDS FROM CLEANING THE GLASS OFF SO I COULD DRIVE BACK HOME. I HAVE DASHCAM FOOTAGE (THAT CAN BE PROVIDED AS WELL) OF ME DRIVING DURING THIS OCCURRENCE AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING THAT WOULD HAVE HIT THE SUNROOF TO DAMAGE IT IN SUCH A WAY. THERE WERE ALSO NO OBJECTS THAT WENT INTO MY CAR'S CABIN FOLLOWING THE BREAKAGE. I WAS READING OVER OTHER SIMILAR REPORTED ISSUES AND THIS APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM THAT IS SPREAD ACROSS VARIOUS MAKES AND MODELS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. THIS IS DEFINITELY A FACTORY DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF AND COVERED BY MANUFACTURERS AS IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE.
2018-12-10

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-04
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I'M TRYING TO FIND THE AGENCY RESPONSIBLE FOR REGULATING CAR ENTERTAINMENT INTERFACES. THE NOTE 9 WITH ANDROID AUTO HAS TWO DEFECTS ONE WHERE THE NAVIGATION BAR DOES NOT RESPOND TO TOUCH INPUT. AND THE SECOND IS THAT TOUCH CONTROLS FOR THE GPS NAVIGATION SCREEN. THE PHONE HAS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR TWO MONTHS AND SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THIS ISSUE ON THE SUPPORT FORUMS, NEITHER GOOGLE NOR SAMSUNG HAS FIXED THE ISSUE OR GIVEN A TIMELINE ON WHEN WE CAN EXPECT THE ISSUE. THIS IS INCREDIBLY DISTRACTING TO THE DRIVER WHEN USING THE INTERFACE, EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT ANDROID AUTO IS SUPPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH.

Negative 2015 Subaru Wrx car reviews

  1. Muhammad Bailey 2024-06-15

Hey there! Let me start by saying that I used to own a 2004 WRX and I absolutely loved it. I would have kept it forever if I hadn't unfortunately totaled it. When I went to purchase a 2015 WRX, I thought I had done my research, but unfortunately, I didn't do it correctly. At only 300 miles, the check engine light and cruise control came on flashing, and while at a stop light (in neutral), it felt like it was going to stall. I took it in and they fixed it, but around 2,000 miles later, the same thing happened again. Not only did the check engine and cruise control lights come back on, but the ABS and hill assist lights came on too, and the rough idling kept happening. I took it in and they kept it for an entire month. When I got it back, there was a very loud gear grinding sound coming from the engine bay (while in neutral). I took it in for the third time and they said it was normal and that all new WRXs make the same noise. But that's not true! I honestly wouldn't recommend this model to anyone. You're better off buying a 2014 model, or even a GTI or Lancer. Subaru usually stands behind their products, but this car is just garbage.

  2. Doris Gerlach 2024-05-07

I recently traded in my Mustang GT for a WRX with CVT, but unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. The car's electronics, such as the radio, Bluetooth, and seat heaters, were outdated and not up to par with modern standards. The radio had poor reception and the sound quality was subpar. Additionally, the Bluetooth would randomly disconnect, regardless of whether I was using my iPhone or Android phone. The car also developed several rattles, and the ride was harsh with unbearable road noise. The front paint was flaking off, and although most of these issues were well documented in service bulletins, no fixes were identified. Furthermore, the AWD was not as good in snow as I had hoped, as the back end would overdrive and cause it to slide out. As a result, I decided to trade it in for another Mustang.

  3. Julio Kerluke 2024-05-01

Buying a 2015 year model with 50K miles could be risky. The car has had several issues since 2014 July, including battery and AC compressor failure, front strut mount failure, brake pedal squeaking, clutch pivot ball squeaking, oil pump replacement, clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing failure, alternator and belt tensioner replacement, and engine whining. Unfortunately, the dealership was unable to resolve the engine whining issue before my PT warranty expired. Additionally, my driver seat squeaks, plastic trims rattle, and the leather on the steering wheel has peeled off. The washer fluid sensor also failed at 59k miles. Despite these issues, I still have a soft spot for Subarus.

  4. Mikel Beatty 2024-03-11

I am extremely disappointed with my recent car purchase. Despite positive reviews, the clutch began to malfunction after only 1200 miles. Although I had purchased an extended warranty, the service response was unsatisfactory, with the promise of only one repair before being left to deal with the issue on my own. This appears to be a recurring issue across multiple forums, indicating a lack of support from Subaru for their product. Additionally, during a car wash, the air from the blower caused the wiper arm to detach, and once again, Subaru did not provide any assistance. As a result of these experiences, I have decided to move on from this brand.

  5. Baylee Bashirian 2024-03-01

As the original owner of a 2015 WRX, I have always run synthetic oil and high octane gas in it since day one. Despite my diligent maintenance, the engine experienced a total failure during a recent business trip. Fortunately, I was able to safely pull over to the side of the road, but this incident could have had much more severe consequences. With 100,000 miles on the car and one year left of financing, the repair estimate is $11,000. It is important to exercise caution when considering this model, as there may be underlying issues that could pose a risk to drivers and passengers alike.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the 2015 WRX Premium model. After reading numerous car reviews and seeing the praise this vehicle was getting from many automotive journalists, I was convinced that this was the car for me. I know it may seem strange to buy a car without taking it for a test drive first, but I decided to put a deposit down in March anyway. I opted for no leather seats, which was an option I could live without. According to the owner's manual, I had to keep the revs under 4000 RPM for the first 1000 miles, and let me tell you, it was quite the challenge! However, I must say that the car looks even better in person and it really grows on you. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. Let me know if you have any questions!

I've driven an M5, 370Z, Mustang GT, and several other BMWs. For the money, this is by far the best!

What a fun car! I absolutely love the sound of the engine. In fact, I rarely turn on the stereo because the engine sound is just that good. Unfortunately, the Bluetooth isn't great, so I usually use a headset instead.
