2010 Subaru Outback problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

History

The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.

Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.

The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.

When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 4S4BRBCCXA3
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brake system failed when the brake lines burst at the four way connector on the right, rear side of the vehicle. There were no indicator lights lit on the dash until after losing all braking. Luckily I was traveling slowly and was able to roll to a stop safely. This is due to corrosion on the brake lines in the area of the four way connector. There is a small inspection door on the cover for this connector, so the issue is easily seen. This has been an issue for Subarus in the past with many recalls for this issue on similar models. Unfortunately the recalls end in 2009 for Outbacks while mine is a 2010. Obviously this issue has not been corrected by the manufacturer.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-08
  • VIN: 4S4BRBKC7A3
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I see many many complaints about the head gasket material Subaru used was not compatible with the very fluid that is needed for the cars engine to not blow up.....coolant. Subaru knows the head gasket material is ruined by the coolant it needs but has left us consumers to deal with a very costly, devastating issue such as what I just want through and am still in the middle of a fight with dealer who sold me a car for 10995 and I had it 2 weeks....coolant blew everywhere had to fight with dealership to get them to tow it. I was yelled at, hung up on, calls not returned all while I have no car no way to work and as a [XXX] and a child to raise, I do not have options and live by a thread and paycheck to paycheck.....It should not be allowed that Subaru doesn't fix that since it is a manufacturing defect that they made it incompatible with the coolant it needs. POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-02
  • VIN: 4S4BRBAC9A3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle has an automatic transmission and it stalls when stopping. There is no warning light on the dash. This happens more frequently when the vehicle is warm, in early operation it may only hesitate or run rough while stopping. A warm a stop is more likely to stall the vehicle than a slow stop. Hard braking at operating temperature will stall the vehicle without fail. This has been happening since I bought it and it occurs with each drive every day.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-13
  • VIN: 4S4BRCKC5A3
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brakes completely gave out while the vehicle was being driven, without warning. The BRAKE light did not turn on until after the car had been stopped and restarted and the brakes had already gone out. Fortunately, the vehicle was being driven on a side street, and it was able to coast into a parking lot. Had the brakes given out before then, when it was on the highway, the outcome could have been far worse. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic. The mechanic stated that once they removed the cover over the rear junction box near the fuel tank, they found the junction box to be corroded away. The vehicle has been to several mechanics over the past several years, and none of them have ever identified any issues with the brakes or brake lines. Subaru had issued a recall for the same issue but for model years 05 to 09.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-26
  • VIN: 4S4BRCLC0A3
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: This is not about my car, but instead many different cars. When a cars lights are set to it's parking lights or running lights position, often located on the turn signal stalk, at night it appears to the driver that their headlights are on, when in fact only the "parking lights are on in front. This is a problem, but not what I'm reporting. When in the parking light position (at night), it appears the headlights are on because there's some light out front AND the instrument cluster is lit up as well. Here's the defect in design, the brake lights are NOT on, completely dark at the rear of the vehicle, so drivers are driving on the highway thinking their headlights and brakes lights are on, when they're not. When the parking light position is active, it should include the brake lights. Can't imagine how many rear-enders are because of this design flaw. *The rotating light switch on turn signal stalks often get unknowingly rotated out of Auto or the headlight position when the turn signal is repeatedly used.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-23
  • VIN: 4S4BRBKC5A3
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: While driving at highway speed the tire separated at the seam of the sidewall and tread. Tire tread depth was between 9–9.5/32nd on the tire. 225/60 r17 tire. Because of the complete separation of the tire and how sudden the separation occurred, it caused the vehicle to lose control, thankfully the driver was able to get control of the vehicle and get it start safely. The safety of all occupants and vehicles on the roadway were put at risk. Tire was taken to the retailer (car dealership), retailer and consumer contacted the manufacturer who stated this is not a manufacture defect.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-15
  • VIN: 4S4BRCCC0A3
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: My daughter was concerned with the car making strange squeaking sounds on turning and braking and so I met her where her car was parked in a lot and drove it for less than 1 minute and could tell something was very wrong and that it didn't seem safe to drive home. My husband came to check as well and zeroed in on the problem being the front driver's side tire/suspension. Fortunately the Subaru dealership was less than .5 away and my husband drove it there (with flashers on). It was determined by the dealership that the subframe had rusted through (we have photos uploaded below) and a new one was ordered and replaced within the week. The materials and labor for that alone cost $1944.37. Control arm bushings, rear toe arms, and alignment were also completed. The total cost of the repair was $3281.14.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-15
  • VIN: 4S4BRCCC0A3
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while his daughter was reversing out of the driveway, the vehicle was making an abnormal clicking sound. The contact's daughter was able to continue driving; however, the suspension was not stable. The contact and his wife test drove the vehicle and noticed that the suspension was unstable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the front subframe was severely corroded. The dealer diagnosed that the subframe, bushings, and the rear toe links needed to be replaced; and an alignment needed to be performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: 4s4brckc1a3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The car will die/stop working at stop signs and at abrupt stops. The problem has been confirmed by a Subaru dealer, and it is a known safety concern, as Subaru put out a safety bulletin but came up short in actually recalling the cars affected. It has been confirmed as a faulty torque converter by a dealership service department. There have been no warnings or messages prior to the problem happening. It is a HUGE safety concern, as the car will die at lights and busy intersections, causing traffic to stop abruptly. It is an accident waiting to happen!!! Because my vehicle is out of warranty, Subaru will not cover the cost of replacing this DANGEROUS system failure.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-08
  • VIN: 4S4BRCKC1A3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Recently, while driving home in traffic, with the car in drive while braking, my car stalled in the middle of the road. Since then, it has happened 4 times. Upon breaking while the car is in Drive, the car stalls and Check Engine Light, Battery, Engine Oil, Oil Temp, AWD, and Traction Control Warning Light come on. When I shift the car into Park, turn off the car, and restart, the lights go away and the car runs smoothly. This is a huge safety concern when the car fails while I am actively driving and has almost caused accidents. I took the car to the dealership and they said that it needs a new torque converter (see Subaru Service Bulletin 16-90-13R https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10140492-9999.pdf). This is a huge safety liability and this issue should be recalled as the car stalling in the middle of traffic is dangerous.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-26
  • VIN: 4S4BRBCC5A1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I have a 2010 Subaru Outback that has significant corrosion on the rear four-way brake joint connector that can lead to a serious accident. There was a campaign that addressed this very issue (NHTSA ID: 14V-311) but it did not include 2010 Outback even though it had the same design. This issue is very serious.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-18
  • VIN: 4S4BRBAC3A3
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Takata recall. The contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that he received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V007000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool showed no recall associated with the VIN. Consumer would like to cancel the investigation.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01
  • VIN: 4s4brccc6a3
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: About three years ago; there was a recall for the headlights. Subaru did replace the headlights, but I have replaced the headlights two additional times since then. And I currently have a headlight out a marker light out. I also last year had all of my marker lights burn out.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-29
  • VIN: 4s4brckc1a3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Outback started jerking forward with an increase in RPMs and noise from engine. Malfunction was very alarming and could result in a traffic accident...especially at higher speeds and in traffic. No warning lamps/messages indicated from vehicle. Took vehicle to Subaru dealership and rode with mechanic. Was told by dealership that a new CVT (transmission) is needed at a quoted cost of $9,000+ (with only 110k miles on the vehicle). Found that a warranty extension was offered by Subaru (2017 CVT Warranty Extension Bulletin Number 16-107-17R) for customer complaints about this issue but not a recall. Contacted Subaru of America. Subaru of America offered minimal assistance and would not honor the extended warranty due to just falling outside of extended warranty period (due to driving fewer-than-average miles per year).
2022-01-11

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-01
  • VIN: 4S4BRBACXA1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while coming to a complete stop, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. Additionally, the vehicle would make abnormal sounds and the gear shift indicator light would disappear from the instrument cluster. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the dealer could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was taken to four independent mechanics. The last mechanic diagnosed that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V297000 (Electrical System) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired and remained with the independent mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
2021-12-13

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-15
  • VIN: 4S4BRBKC8A3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: CVT was given a warranty extension. Subaru is aware that this is a KNOWN issue, otherwise they would not have given a warranty extension. A loud squealing occurs and a the RPMs increase when driving. This occurs in slower speed areas as well as on the highway. This is a dangerous problem as the transmission could give out while driving on the highway or interstate. The driver would then be forced to slow to a lower mph and possibly cause an accident. Since this is a known problem with this year, a recall should be given for Subaru to repair this CVT problem in all models. At the very least, if a person calls in to have this problem resolved, they should repair the problem since it's a known issue.
2021-11-17

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-16
  • VIN: 4S4BRBCC1A3
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Failure of rear hydraulic braking system (brake lines) due to corrosion. Steady loss of fluid due to corrosion around the double brake line union underneath rear passenger side. Plastic cover prevents corrosion issues from being spotted prior to it becoming a catastrophic failure. Vehicle has been inspected by a service center. The "brake" warning lamp illuminated in the dash to alert the drivers of a possible problem, but a significant amount of fluid was lost.

  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Legacy vehicles manufactured November 26, 2008, to June 7, 2013, and 2010-2014 Outback vehicles manufactured January 9, 2009 to June 7, 2013. • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback vehicles equipped with an automatic or CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, certain model year 2012-2013 Impreza vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, and certain model year 2013 XV Crosstrek vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. • Consequence: The engine may inadvertently start and run for up to fifteen minutes. The engine may continue to start and stop until the fob battery is depleted, or until the vehicle runs out of fuel. If the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area, there is a risk of carbon monoxide build-up which may cause headaches, dizziness or, in extreme cases, unconsciousness and/or asphyxiation.

Negative 2010 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Ewald Cormier 2024-10-26

Wow, it seems like my car is always in need of maintenance. Whether it's the headlights burning out frequently ($110/each) or the Check Engine light coming on every few months, it can be frustrating. However, I do appreciate that it gets great gas mileage, regularly achieving 31+ mpg.

  2. Aiden Dicki 2024-10-17

Title says it all. I have never put $2500 into a car at 80K. I have previously owned Toyotas and Hondas, but unfortunately, I have experienced way too many recalls and minor issues. Therefore, I am looking to sell my car and move on.

  3. Elwyn Cremin 2024-08-07

If you're in the market for brake rotors that are resistant to rust, you may want to consider replacing the factory-installed ones. The factory alignment may not be ideal for windy days on the open road, and there may be issues with water intrusion and the driver's side window. Additionally, the premium sound system may not meet your expectations, and you may need to clamp loose heat shields to prevent rattling. However, after switching to a Prius V, I was pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness and upgrades it offered. My wife can still load kayaks inside and have a friend sit behind her for a comfortable ride to their destination.

  4. Jerrod Larkin 2024-07-22

I hope you've been enjoying your leased car for the past two years! As your lease comes to an end, I wanted to share some feedback on my experience driving it. While it's great for getting around town at moderate speeds, I found it a bit challenging to drive on longer trips. The sightlines can be disorienting and the CVT delay can take some getting used to. Additionally, the blind spots can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially when driving on the highway. As someone who's used to driving in the NYC area, I know how important it is to feel confident on the road. That being said, I've found that sticking to the slow lane and keeping speeds under 65mph has helped me feel more comfortable. My boyfriend shares my sentiments and has also found the design and windshield angle to be a bit unsettling. Overall, I think this car is great for short trips and city driving, but may not be the best fit for longer journeys. Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with you!

  5. Ignatius Mills 2024-07-01

This is a great snow car, but unfortunately it developed the well-documented front-end shimmy almost immediately. Many of the convenience and entertainment features are quirky or poorly implemented, such as a Nav system that is horrendous and can't be read with polarized sunglasses. We decided to trade the vehicle in after Subaru finally admitted that their proposed fix to the shimmy problem would not really fix the problem. Gas mileage was mid-20's in town, 30 and up on the highway. The dealership process was generally poor. However, we appreciate your feedback and hope to improve our services in the future.

Positive 2010 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Jerrell Windler 2025-01-08

It's always interesting to see the reactions when Subaru releases a new car. Personally, I used to drive a 1997 OB with a 5-speed and loved it, but had to give it up due to poor ergonomics. Being 6'3

  2. Benjamin Osinski 2024-11-06

This is my fourth Subaru and it's my favorite so far. The car is well-built and feels tight. The 3.6 engine is strong and smooth, and works well with the 5-speed auto. The navigation system is easy to use and the Harman Kardon stereo sounds great. The interior room is much improved over previous generations and overall it is well laid out. As expected, this car handles the snow and cold with ease and is a blast to drive.

  3. Khalil Williamson 2024-10-29

Purchased Limited 3.6 new, have driven 5950 miles. It's been a great SUV so far, with 19.5 mpg in town and 28 mpg on the highway. It's also very quiet, even at high speeds. I would definitely consider purchasing it again.

  4. Dayton Dickens 2024-08-18

Congratulations on reaching 20,000 miles! It's great to hear that you haven't experienced any of the issues that some other owners have reported. While it would be nice if Subaru included some of the features found on other cars at this trim level, such as automatic door locks and turn signals on mirrors, I completely understand why you feel more secure driving this car than any other car or truck you've driven since 1963. As a fellow car enthusiast, I can appreciate your love for cars and your extensive driving experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Rick Ankunding 2024-05-17

It took almost 12 weeks from the order date until delivery, but it was definitely worth the wait. This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned, and I absolutely love driving it. The acceleration and braking are very responsive, and it drives like a much more expensive vehicle. The 3.6 engine has great power and still gets very good gas mileage, averaging 21 mpg in the city. The seats are extremely comfortable, and the sound system is excellent. The vehicle's performance in snow is outstanding, as it holds the road like a magnet even in deep snow. While the hands-free phone system is disappointing and not easy to program or use, the heated seats work great. However, it would be preferable if they turned off automatically when the engine is turned off.
