1998 Toyota T100 problems

toyota logo

The Toyota T100 is a full-size pickup truck produced by Toyota between 1992 and 1998. It was developed strictly for the US (and Canadian) markets, where larger pickups have a sizable market share.

History

As Toyota firmly established itself in the North American compact pickup truck market in the 1980s through 1990s, the company offered a truck that was larger than the compact as an alternative to the traditional North American full-size pickup truck market. North American Toyota dealers had long been clamoring for a full-sized Toyota truck, especially in light of the high percentage of Toyota Pickup owners who moved on to domestic full-sized trucks. The T100 reflected a philosophy of designing products specifically for localized international markets, where traditional products sold and made in Japan wouldn't sell well. This approach is also demonstrated with the introduction of the mid-size Toyota Camry (XV10) which was larger than the compact Toyota Camry (V30) in 1991, and again in 1997 when the Toyota Sienna replaced the slow selling Toyota Previa.

Rumored for many years before, the 1993 Toyota T100 boasted a full-size (8 ft) pickup bed but retained the engine and suspension setup of its smaller and older sibling, the compact Toyota Truck. Although the T100 was a bit larger than the competitive mid-size Dodge Dakota, it was still markedly smaller than full-size American pickup trucks of the time. This meant that the T100 occupied its own niche in the truck market. Before introducing the T100, the company reflected on its history of commercial truck manufacture and products they offered in the past. Past products started with the Toyota G1, the Toyota FA, the Toyota BX, the Toyota Stout, the Toyota ToyoAce, and the Toyota Dyna, and its market successes with their Hino Division. Though economical, reliable, and practical, the T100 was slow to be accepted by traditional buyers of full-size competitors, while it was larger than both the Toyota Truck followed by the Toyota Tacoma compact trucks. Wary of the market pushback of competing directly with the Big Three, Toyota chose this somewhat smaller size (and limited lineup) so as not to risk blowback and import quotas. The T100 was designed and engineered for the North American market and was not sold in Japan.

Although sales were slow at the start, the T100 sales did reach into the mid 40,000 vehicles sold range (1996) in the United States. Sales of the Chevrolet C/K were roughly 700,000 per year, while sales of the Ford F-Series surged from 550,000 to nearly 850,000 and Dodge from 100,000 to 400,000 with the introduction of the new Dodge Ram in 1993. Sales of the T100 fell approximately 30 percent when the new Ram went on the market in October 1993, 11 months after the T100's launch in November 1992.

Common 1998 Toyota T100 problems

The Toyota T100, produced in 1998, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the starter, with 29 owners reporting that their vehicles won't crank due to a faulty starter. This problem can be caused by various factors, such as a worn-out starter motor, a damaged solenoid, or a malfunctioning electrical system.

Another common problem reported by Toyota T100 owners is related to the engine. Some owners have experienced misfires, particularly on cylinder number 4, which can cause the engine to sputter and shut off unexpectedly. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty spark plugs, damaged ignition coils, or clogged fuel injectors. In some cases, replacing the spark plugs, wires, and coil packs may not solve the problem, and a more in-depth diagnosis may be required.

The brakes are also known to be a problem area for the Toyota T100. Some owners have reported that the front brake pads wear out quickly, requiring frequent replacement. This issue can be caused by various factors, including the design of the brake system, the quality of the brake pads, and the driving habits of the owner.

The transmission is another area where the Toyota T100 has been known to have problems. Some owners have reported that their transmissions have locked up or failed, particularly on 5-speed manual models. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a lack of maintenance, a faulty clutch, or a damaged transmission.

Finally, some owners have reported issues with the starter motor, which can continue to run for a minute or more after the engine has started. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a faulty solenoid, a damaged electrical system, or a malfunctioning starter motor.

In summary, the Toyota T100 has several common problems that owners have reported, including issues with the starter, engine, brakes, transmission, and starter motor. These issues can be caused by various factors, and may require professional diagnosis and repair.

Is the 98 Toyota T100 a good truck?

Best Truck-True workhorse & A+ Reliable

Good gas mileage for truck that delivers so much in terms of reliability and function. Owned many Toyota trucks and the T100 is my favorite. Super low cost to own, easy to self-service, will carry/tow way more than you would expect and drives nice.

Why did the Toyota T100 fail?

But, in typical Toyota fashion, the company decided that truck buyers didn't need a V-8 or massive bulk. So the Japanese automaker combined a full-size eight-foot bed with a smaller cab and V-6 engine to achieve better fuel economy. American truck buyers of the 1990s weren't having it. The T100 was shunned.

How many miles will a Toyota T100 last?

The 3.4L is a good motor but you must do preventive maintenance on valve cover gaskets and timing belt. These motors will easily get 250K+ miles if this is done.

How reliable is the T100?

MOST RELIABLE VEHICLE I'VE EVER OWNED

I drove it for 20 1/2 years. We never put more than $4,000 in it including oil changes. My granddaughter has been driving it for 2 years. The integrity of the body is AMAZING.

Is Toyota T100 a good car?

T100 has super reliablilty, gas mileage & comfort

Reliable, easy to do routine maintenance like oil and filter changes. We always get compliments on it. It is 350k miles and still going strong after nearly 24 years. Nobody beats Toyota.

Why did Toyota stop making the T100?

In theory, a full-size pickup truck from Toyota in the early-1990s sounded like a recipe for success. However, in practice the T100 was a commercial failure, never selling more than 40,000 units in a single year when some Big Three competitors were selling upwards of 700,000.

BASICALLY I BELIEVE THAT THE BLOWER IS CREATING TOO MANY VOLTS THAT CAUSES THE WIRES TO OVERHEAT AND MELT TOGETHER. THERE WAS NO FIRE BUT IT DOES SMOKE WHEN IT SHORTS OUT. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-12-05
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: CALIPERS ON THE BRAKES OF TOYOTA T100 PICKUP TRUCKS LOCKUP CAUSING IRREPAIRABLE DAMAGE TO BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. THIS NECESSITATES REPLACEMENT OF THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY AND ROTOR-HUB PARTS AND SIGNIFICANT LABOR COST ($931). THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN LESS THAN 18 MONTHS ON MY 1998 T100. WHEN I PROMPTED THE DEALERSHIP TO PAY FOR MATERIALS THE SECOND TIME, THEY TOLD ME IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WITH T100, TUNDRA AND TACOMAS. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO PREVENT OR AVIOD THE SITUATION AND THEY WILL NOT ABSORB THE MATERIAL COSTS (APPROX $450) FOR THE SECOND REPAIR BECAUSE IT WAS A "MECHANICAL FAILURE" OF THE CALIPERS. WHEN I SUGGESTED TO THEM THE FACT ITS A KNOWN ISSUE AMONG TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPAIR SHOPS SHOULD MAKE IT A RECALL ISSUE. IT WAS THEIR EQUIPEMNT, INSTALLED BY THEM THAT WAS FAILING. MY REQUEST FOR DISCOUNT IN THE SECOND REPAIR WAS DISMISSED. I SUSPECT THE PROBLEM IS CONTINUING, BASED ON AN INTERMITTEN NOISE AND HESITATION IN THE FRONT RIGHT OF THE TRUCK NOW AND AGAIN AND EXCESSIVE BRAKE PAD SOOT ON THE WHEEL RIMS. TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION AND OWNERS SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO FORK OUT $931 EVERY YEAR TO MAINTAIN BRAKES. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO A THIRD REPAIR OF THIS TYPE.*AK

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-07-28
  • VIN: JT4UN22D7W0
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: ON JULY 28, 2004, MY 1998 TOYOTA T-100 4X4 SUFFERED A COMPLETE LACK OF STEERING CONTROL AS I STARTED DOWN MY DRIVEWAY. THE CAUSE WAS A STEERING ROD RELAY THAT BROKE IN TWO. I HAVE THE FAILED PART. IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN EITHER A TWO-PART FAILURE OR A FLAW IN THE ORIGINAL CASTING. ONE-HALF OF A CROSS-SECTION THROUGH THE BREAK IS BRIGHT GRAY STEEL WITH THE ROUGH SURFACE CHARACTERISTIC OF FATIGUE FAILURES, THE OTHER HALF IS COMPARATIVELY SMOOTH AND THE SAME RUST-COLOR AS THE OUTSIDE OF THE PART. MY TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN USED FOR ROCK-CLIMBING, NOR HAS IT BEEN RAMMED INTO A SOLID OBSTACLE SUCH AS A CURB OR LARGE POTHOLE. THE ONLY TRAUMA IT HAS BEEN SUBJECT TO IS LOW-SPEED MANEUVERING IN HEAVY SNOW AND ICE. ALTHOUGH THE FAILURE DID NOT CAUSE DEATH OR DAMAGE, IF IT HAD OCCURED A FEW MINUTES LATER, I WOULD HAVE BEEN DOING 60 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. WHILE I DON'T THINK TOYOTA OWES ME ANYTHING ON A SIX-YEAR-OLD VEHICLE, I AM WORRIED THAT THIS FLAW MIGHT REPRESENT A BAD BATCH OF STEERING ROD RELAYS. IF SO, THEN THERE ARE OTHER T-100S OUT THERE THAT COULD KILL THEIR OWNERS.*AK

Positive 1998 Toyota T100 car reviews

  1. Jarvis Hirthe 2024-11-22

    1. The truck is 207 inches long, which means it can easily fit in my garage or a parking ramp. 2. It has a 6-foot box and 4 feet between the fender wells. 3. It can even seat up to 6 people in a pinch. I have been the proud owner of this truck for 14 years, and if any manufacturer made a similar truck today, I would buy it without hesitation. I have no complaints whatsoever.

  2. Gillian Walsh 2024-11-20

I bought my T-100 brand new in December 1997 and even after almost 6 years, I still love it just as much as the day I bought it. It's surprising that it wasn't a popular seller back then because I have had at least 5 people ask me if I want to sell it in the past 2 years. I have never had any problems with it and it performs excellently in the snow. The bed is also spacious enough to haul whatever I need. The only minor issue is that the front of the truck is slightly uneven, but it's hardly noticeable unless you stare at it for a while. Overall, I think this is an amazing truck that should definitely have a higher resale value.

  3. Rosario Cremin 2024-11-11

I've driven this truck hard, but I've always maintained it. I've done all of the work myself, except for the timing belt, and it's never broken down. Even with 105,000 miles on it, it still runs and looks like it's brand new. It's definitely the best vehicle I've ever owned, and I still love it - especially because it's red! I've upgraded it with Bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs and a K&N air filter, which has given it a slightly better response and more power. I must have gotten lucky with this one, because it can keep up with or even beat a lot of V8's - probably because it's a lighter truck. Best regards, Griff.

  4. Newell Marks 2024-10-09

Your truck came to me with 144,000 miles on it. It drives great on the highway, straight and true and smooth. It takes the bumps like a pickup, but then that's what it's called. I previously owned a '79 4WD Toyota, and this truck is like a Cadillac to me. It has a reasonable sized rear bed with an extra back seat for shopping and inside packages. The 4WD sits as tall as all its bigger brothers and sounds great! Even after my wife drove it into the end of the garage, with a new bumper and headlight, it looks the same as before. This is one tough truck!

  5. Sanford Satterfield 2024-10-06

Toyota has built a great truck! I've driven my truck across the country twice with a full load, and I never had a single problem. With 76,000 miles on the truck, I've only had to do routine maintenance to keep it running smoothly. Although, I must admit, the driver seat can get a little uncomfortable on long drives.
