The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2017 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2017 Subaru Impreza has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The CVT issues include slipping, overheating, stalling, and trouble controlling engine speed

Another common problem reported by owners is related to the fuel pump. The 2017 Subaru Impreza has a history of having fuel delivery system issues, which can cause the car not to start or run erratically. The fuel pump's impellers have a manufacturing flaw that causes them to deform over time, affecting the fuel pump's capacity to pump. Subaru issued a recall for the 2019 Impreza to replace these fuel pumps with more dense pumps that are less likely to deform. If your car was exempt from the recall, replacing the pump will cost you about $800

The brakes are another area where the 2017 Subaru Impreza has common problems. Many Impreza owners from 2011 to 2015 believe that the brakes are underpowered for the car. They have mentioned unusually long braking distances and sluggish brake pedal response. The brakes are the most important aspect of an automobile's safety. Brakes give you the ability to instantly slow down or stop, which can help avoid serious accidents. When you need your brakes the most, poorly maintained and infrequently tested brakes could fail you. We advise using premium braking fluid to enhance fluid response. Replace the brake kits on each side of the car if you feel that the brakes are also underpowered. A complete set of high-quality brakes costs about $1200

Rusted brake lines are also a common problem with the 2017 Subaru Impreza. All automobiles are prone to rust, but the automaker must make sure that rust or corrosion won't affect the vital parts of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the Subaru Impreza is not one of those vehicles. Brake line issues, including blistering brake lines, have been reported by some Impreza owners at around 30,000 miles. If the lines running from the car to the calipers get damaged by debris hitting them frequently, then they will blister. Replacing the lines costs around $400.

The 2017 Subaru Impreza also has issues with the infotainment system. The most common problem reported by owners is that the screen freezes, not allowing podcasts, occasionally, the main screen for the radio/audio does not fully "boot" upon car start-up for a long time, and the star link system in the car has not worked since they bought it. The radio will keep skipping stations for no apparent reason, and the volume control knob and search/seek/tuning knobs both failed.

Lastly, the 2017 Subaru Impreza has issues with the CVT select lever. A single associate was found using an improper torque wrench technique while tightening a cable nut in the CVT select lever of the 2021 Impreza and Outback. If left loose, the gear selector may not function properly.

In summary, the 2017 Subaru Impreza has several common problems, including CVT issues, fuel pump problems, underpowered brakes, rusted brake lines, infotainment system issues, and CVT select lever issues. These problems can affect the car's performance, safety, and overall reliability. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the car's longevity and safety.

We need help! The car is in perfect condition we have NOT have any issues with the related 'recall' as of today. VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-30
  • VIN: 4S3GTAD65H3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I am logging a complaint regarding my Subaru Impreza 2017 windshield. I bought new in 2017, and it currently has only about 55k miles. The windshield is completely covered (literally thousands) of tiny pinpoint chips. At certain times of day (usually sunset) the glare that this causes is so bad that visibility is very poor and driving is almost scary. I contacted the dealership and they said they haven’t heard of this issue. I drive regular roads and with this low of a mileage, I shouldn’t be having to think about replacing my windshield. I’ve driven cars with triple the mileage and windshields don’t look like this.

  • VIN: 4S3GTAU60H3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: From: [XXX] Date: August 18, 2023 Subject: Complaint Against Subaru for Faulty and Poor Quality Windshield I am writing to file a complaint against Subaru for the faulty and poor-quality windshield in my 2017 Subaru Impreza. On August 18, 2023, while I was driving on I-35, a tiny speck hit my windshield. Within a few minutes of driving, the speck spread into a large crack. I immediately pulled over and contacted the nearest Subaru dealer. The dealer said that the windshield would need to be replaced, and the repair cost would be $1,500. I am concerned that Subaru is ignoring the poor quality of their windshields. I have done some research online, and I have found many other complaints from Subaru owners who have had similar experiences. In some cases, the windshields have shattered while the vehicles were being driven, putting drivers and other road users at risk. I am requesting that NHTSA take urgent action against Subaru. I believe that Subaru violates federal safety regulations by selling vehicles with defective windshields. I urge you to investigate this matter and take appropriate action to protect the safety of consumers. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2017 Subaru Impreza car reviews

I spent two months researching new vehicles and heard a lot of good things about Subaru. I was particularly impressed with the redesigned Subaru Impreza Sport, which boasts impressive exterior and interior design, as well as additional tech and safety features. I purchased the car on Memorial Day weekend, but unfortunately, I've experienced some issues with it. However, the service department at my local Subaru dealer in Connecticut has been very professional and helpful throughout the process. About a week after purchasing the Impreza, the Eyesight feature disabled itself on three different occasions, even on clear and sunny days. I recorded videos of the issues and showed them to the service department, who explained that a software update was needed. The car was returned to me after the update, but the following day, the Eyesight feature disabled itself again, along with the volume control and backup camera. I recorded the issues again and showed them to the service department, who installed updated software and filed an open tech claim on the vehicle. Two weeks later, I went grocery shopping and got out of the car, leaving it running. When I closed the door to open the trunk and retrieve my phone, the car locked itself, and I was unable to unlock it with either the smart key or manual key. I had to walk an hour to get the spare key, but it still didn't work. I called Subaru customer service, and they sent a tow truck to open the door and advised me to take the car to the dealer as soon as possible, as it might be a computer issue. Despite these issues, I appreciate the professionalism and helpfulness of the service department at my local Subaru dealer. The car has been in the service department for 4 days with a pre-existing open tech case. The dealer called me up and stated they couldn't find anything wrong with the car. I must admit, it has been a frustrating 2 months with this car. One would expect these issues with a much older model car, not a brand new one. I have owned Hondas and Nissans and never had any issues with those cars. However, I appreciate that Subaru is trying to do the right thing, especially since this is the first time I have ever purchased a Subaru vehicle. After this is all over, I hope to have a better experience and I am willing to give Subaru another chance.

Hi there! I've owned 5 Subarus so far and I've been a big fan of the brand. However, my experience with my brand new 2017 Impreza Sport hasn't been the best. Within the first week of owning it, the screen went blank and nothing was working. Although it was replaced, the same problem happened again just 2 weeks later. So, in the first month of ownership, it spent 2 weeks in the shop. I'm still having some issues now, where every other time I start the car, the radio resets back to default, deleting all my saved radio stations. I've tried to get in touch with the service manager, but haven't had any luck yet. I'm considering looking into the lemon law, but I've learned my lesson and won't be buying the first year of a redesign again.

I really like Subaru, especially because I live in New York State where we get a lot of snow and this car handles it like a champ. The Impreza has a lot of great features, like the spacious hatchback, which I love. However, there are some downsides to this car. One of the biggest issues is its lack of speed. Despite having a 2.0L engine, it's still pretty slow without a turbo. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great, especially for city driving. I've had a few entertainment issues, but nothing too major. Overall, I had some great trips and memories in this car, but it's time for me to move on to a faster car with better MPG.

All would seem fine if my 2017 Impreza Hatchback had better in-town gas mileage than the (very) low 20s and highway gas mileage that rarely topped 30. Unfortunately, these are major shortcomings that also happen to be costly. After a full year of ownership, the gas mileage has slightly worsened. This is not impressive, especially given the contrast between the EPA figures and real-world experience.

Sorry I couldn't help myself with the title. After reading dozens of reviews online, I decided to test drive a new Impreza, specifically the Sport version, which I found to be the most visually appealing. The interior was comfortable and stylish, with symmetrical lines that were easy on the eyes. The visibility was good, and the brake and gas pedals were conveniently located for easy transitioning. While the CVT transmission lacked torque, the shifting was smooth and the ride was generally quiet. However, the steering felt artificially hard and lacked feedback, making low-speed maneuvers a bit of a challenge. Additionally, the AC and heater vents were a bit difficult to move. Overall, I found the noise levels to be comparable to other cars in its class. While the Impreza may not be a significant improvement over my 99 Accord, it does offer some nice gadgets and improved fuel efficiency. It's worth noting that the lower-end model felt more nimble and had better steering feel than the Sport version.

Great news! This car doesn't have a CD player, but it's still a really nice ride!

Due to the pandemic and virtual high school, we accumulated fewer miles last year - only 36,000 miles. However, there were no mechanical issues, and Subaru issued two recalls that were promptly completed - the ignition coil packs were replaced, and the Subaru STARLINK programming was updated from 3G to 5G. Overall, we still consider this car a great choice for a student, although the city mileage is poor, averaging 22 mpg in the city but over 30 mpg on the highway. At just over 33,000 miles, we replaced the original battery after four years of regular maintenance. The car has served its purpose well as a backup commuter car and will soon be turned over to a high school student for their daily 2.5-mile commute to and from school. The car is not common, which we like, and it handles well on the road, even in heavy rainstorms. Although the mileage does not quite live up to EPA estimates, it still averages around 33-34 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg around town. We have had no issues with oil usage, but we were very careful to break it in during the first 1000 miles. We have enjoyed the Impreza hatchback limited and find it very quiet on drives. We have taken it from Houston to Dallas and once to Austin, and it handles the interstate and farm highways fine. Just hit 15,000 miles and had the third complimentary service with no problems at all. The Eyesight is great and we use it even in heavy traffic. This car is great for keeping up with traffic and has plenty of passing power. While the highway mileage is around 36 and averages 32, which is not as good as I had hoped for compared to our bigger 2014 Subaru Forester that averages 28, the 2 year free maintenance is a great bonus. I also like that it is not super common in Houston, so it stands out in parking lots. The Eyesight system works great, and the second edition update is much smoother than in our Forester. I even use it in stop and go traffic. The lane assist does not really steer the vehicle but nudges you back into your lane if you stray too close to the lines. The blind spot warning is also great, visible on the inside of the outside mirrors, and helps in heavy traffic. The back up reverse will stop if you are about to hit something, and it has already saved me from hitting a car. We bought this car for a soon-to-be teenage driver, so we have all of the safety features available. Before that happens, it will be our backup commuter car (85 mile round trip commute). It is a very nice, comfortable ride, and it cruises easily in Houston traffic at 80-85 (normal speed for Houston). Today, we got 40 mpg on the highway and around town, 29 mpg. The hatch is the best buy, with great space on the inside and very good visibility. Check it out!

I purchased this car primarily for its safety features, which are unparalleled in the market. However, it is worth noting that in order to access these features, one must purchase at least the Premium model of the Impreza, which may be a concern for those on a budget. The 'eyesight' feature is particularly impressive, and the blind spot warning has proven to be extremely helpful. The Adaptive Cruise Control feature is also noteworthy, as it significantly reduces the need to brake. It is worth mentioning that the car tends to rely on engine braking to slow down while in cruise control, which may not be immediately apparent to drivers behind you. Unfortunately, the car's fuel efficiency is mediocre at best, with a combined 31mpg rating that seems somewhat optimistic. It is surprising that a more fuel-efficient car has not been developed in this day and age. Despite this, I ultimately chose the Impreza over other options due to its superior safety features, which outperformed even Toyota's offerings. The audio system, however, leaves much to be desired, with the Apple Play feature working inconsistently and only one USB port in an inconvenient location. Lastly, the radio automatically turning on and off is a minor annoyance that the dealership has acknowledged as a known issue. Overall, the car is cute, runs smoothly, and most importantly, makes me feel safe on the road. Also, I did quite a bit of shopping, and I must say that the Internet price was by far the best price I could get anywhere. Thank you so much, Edmunds!

I affectionately call it my CarPuter. Although it has a myriad of menus, commands, and controls that may seem overwhelming, it is still a great car. Unfortunately, there is a Big Flaw that causes a message to pop up every day or so saying 'Telematics Service in Progress'. This disables the radio, CD, and other features until the car is shut down for a while. Despite seeking help from the salesman, mechanics, and even Subaru HQ in NJ, the issue remained unresolved. However, the service manager promised to work on it for an hour if I bring the car back. It can be frustrating to carry a portable radio for when the message pops up, but the car's mileage, AWD, and safety features make up for it. Although there is no true mute, pressing the volume dial mutes the radio, but it returns to the start of the commercial when unmuted. My previous car, a Mercedes C300, had a mute that worked properly. Additionally, the car cannot be locked from the rear, but the dealer fixed the Telematics bug and the clock and date after ordering a part. Despite some minor issues, I still love my car and can get up to 32 MPG.Hi there! While I'm happy with the mileage I'm getting, I have to admit that I'm still a bit wary of the electronics in my car. There are just so many menus and sub-menus to navigate! However, I recently met a woman who has the same 2017 Impreza as me and she absolutely loves it. She even asked if I got a lemon! So, while I may have some reservations about the electronics, overall I'm still quite pleased with my car. Plus, with gas prices being so high, it's great that I can still get 34 MPG frequently.
