2019 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2019 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2019 Subaru Impreza has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the brakes, fuel pump, infotainment system, and transmission.

  • Denso Fuel Pump Failure: A class action lawsuit has been filed against Subaru for defective Denso low-pressure fuel pumps, which can cause the engine to stall out. The impellers inside the pumps may have been excessively exposed to a drying agent during manufacturing, leading to cracks, fuel absorption, and deformation.
  • Subaru STARLINK Problems: The infotainment system heavily relies on a touch screen interface that freezes randomly, stops responding to touch inputs, and sometimes requires the car to be shut off for over an hour before it starts working again.
  • Transmission Issues: A single factory worker was found using an improper torque wrench technique while tightening a cable nut in the CVT select lever of the 2021 Impreza, potentially affecting the gear selector's functionality. Additionally, there have been reports of stalling due to a defect in the transmission.
  • Rodents Chewing Soy Wires: Rodents are attracted to the soy-derived wire coatings used in many Subaru vehicles, causing costly repairs.
  • Subaru EyeSight Problems: The EyeSight technology has been known to fall asleep on the job, particularly in bad weather driving. It is generally regarded as bulky and an overly expensive upgrade on higher trim levels.
  • Other Issues: Owners have reported issues with the car's battery dying, windshield cracking, steering being too sensitive, stalling, and Bluetooth connectivity problems.

These issues are based on owner complaints and may not represent all 2019 Subaru Impreza vehicles. Potential buyers should consider these problems and consult with a trusted mechanic or dealership for further information.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
  • VIN: 4S3GTAD63K3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Rear wheel bearing premature wear. Originally installed wheel bearings were replaced, under warranty, at 44,137 miles. Same bearings then had to be replaced again at 62,486 miles. Both replacements were done by Beardmore Subaru in Nebraska. A failed wheel bearing at high speed could result in a catastrophic accident, and requiring replacement at these low mileage levels is indicative of poor design or substandard parts.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
  • VIN: 4S3GTAD64K3
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Vehicle sways significantly and continuously left and right in lane at highway speeds, including in low or no wind conditions, since the car was new. This happens regardless of whether eyesight/lane keep assist is enabled or not, and all tire pressures are regularly monitored and at manufacturer recommended levels. Changing tires from the OEM Continental Pro Contact to Michelin CrossClimate 2, while maintaining OEM wheels and 205/55R16 tire size, has not impacted the car's behavior. This weaving occurs at speeds of 50-70 mph on the highway, including on straight, smooth road. Swaying does not disappear with absence of adjacent vehicles influencing air turbulence. Neighboring vehicle air wakes will cause significant additional pushing of the car to the opposite side of the lane. The steering feel of this car on the highway is extremely "floaty" and unsettling. It is challenging to maintain lane with no surrounding cars, and it is extremely dangerous when passing vehicles.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: 4S3GKAD62K3
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering pump on this car makes it feel like it is floating on the road at highway speeds. The tires are like new and have the correct amount of air pressure. As someone familiar with power steering pumps, this behavior is consistent with a pump that is either delivering too much fluid or too little during acceleration. It is a dangerous situation since it gives the driver the impression that the car is losing contact with the road.

This warping leaves a huge gap that exposes the bottom of the windshield and allows debris and water under the hood of the car. I was told this was a known issue with multiple Subaru models. The auto glass specialist I was sent to did not have a fix other than replacing it whenever it warps, which is prohibitively expensive when it only lasts about a year.

Negative 2019 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Ted Goyette 2025-08-22

It sounds like there may have been a few oversights in the quality control of my Subaru. I've noticed a few issues with the automatic transmission shifting at low speeds, which can be a bit jerky and cause a pause when accelerating. Additionally, there have been a few instances where the steering control disappears for a brief moment, which can be concerning. I've also noticed some cosmetic defects, such as an uneven engine hood, water spots on the windshield, and a chip in the backside of the glass touch display. While these issues are a bit frustrating, I'm hopeful that they can be resolved. I've brought them to the attention of the dealer, but unfortunately, they don't seem too concerned. I'm hoping we can work together to find a solution that works for everyone.

  2. Roderick Christiansen 2024-11-09

I purchased the 2019 Subaru Impreza hatchback. After six months, the struts started making a crinkling noise. I took it in and the dealer replaced the struts. Two years later, the struts started making noises again and it was outside the warranty. The dealer insisted on replacing them again. It is unusual for me to have issues with struts, especially after only three years of driving, and regular driving on normal streets, and 30,000 miles. Despite the poor acceleration, especially with passengers, and the wonky phone connection and CarPlay functions, one good benefit is that it has a huge turn radius. Overall, I am disappointed with my purchase.

  3. Hans Zemlak 2024-03-29

I drove my 2011 Impreza happily for 180,000 miles until I finally traded it in for a 2018 model. However, I was disappointed with the new car. Like other reviews here, mine must have been a lemon because it drove jerkily in traffic at low speeds. I took it to the dealer twice, but they said they could not replicate the problem, so there was nothing they could do unless check engine lights came on. They suggested it might be bad gas, but I am sure it was not since it did it most of the time, especially in very warm weather. Unfortunately, I had to trade the car in, and I am no longer driving a Subaru.

  4. Raymond Bartoletti 2024-03-21

The engine in this car could use a bit more power, but overall it's a great choice. The on-dash computer that logs your miles per gallon of gas may not be entirely accurate, as it shows an average of only 24 miles per gallon and 23 miles per hour while driving. While 24 miles per gallon may be more typical of a truck or sporty engine, it's still a decent figure. If you're looking for a fun and affordable option, this car or any Subaru Impreza is a great choice. Keep up the good work, Subaru!

  5. Freddie Bergstrom 2024-01-13

I have encountered several issues with my vehicle, including excessive oil consumption, slow acceleration, frequent driver window malfunctions, and an extreme rev hang. Additionally, the air conditioning system is not functioning properly, only blowing hot air. In hindsight, I regret not purchasing a Prius or a Honda Fit.

Positive 2019 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Haskell Turner 2025-08-21

I wanted to give a big shoutout to Louis Hernandez and Mike Medina, the A+ sales representatives who made my recent purchase of a 2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i such a smooth and enjoyable experience. They were incredibly efficient and even added some wit to the process! In just two hours, I was able to get a much more competitive price for my car compared to other Subaru locations. I was impressed with how hassle-free the paperwork and financing were. After receiving my new Subaru Impreza keys, Louis gave me specific information on how to take care of my new car, including tips for the first 1000 miles. Mike also showed me how to operate the Subaru, from using EyeSight to connecting my phone to StarLink. I've been driving my new Subaru for half a month now and I absolutely love it! The acceleration is strong, the embedded technologies are impressive, and the sleek look is beautiful. Louis even followed up with me several times to make sure everything was going well with my new car. Subaru's customer service is definitely a defining part of the brand and it's one of the reasons why I'm now such a big fan. I know that if anything goes wrong with my car, Subaru will have my back!

I've had this car for 7 months and I must say, there are a lot more pros than cons. Let me list them for you. PROS: The boxer engine lowers the car's center of gravity, making it easy to handle. It's also easy to service, especially when doing oil changes. The Sport Trim makes the car truly feel sporty, especially if you get the sedan; it comes with a spoiler. The phone syncs easily to Bluetooth and the infotainment system. The Sport Trim has a large, easy-to-use radio console. The backup camera on the Sport Trim is easy to see since it uses the large radio console. AWD enables you to drive through rain and snow with absolute confidence. The engine is not as underpowered as people claim; you can merge quickly and change lanes with ease on highways. The rear seats fold flat if you need more cargo room to haul things. CONS: It's a compact sedan, so storage space will be more limited. The center console has limited storage space and there's no compartment space for driving glasses. Be careful raking off lugnuts. For some odd reason, Subaru used fine thread on the lugnut studs (had to replace a couple of them). OVERALL: This is a fun car to drive and it's small yet rugged and reliable transportation. Overall, I give it a rating of 9.5/10.

If you're in the market for a sporty car, the WRX is a great choice. While the acceleration is not mind-blowing, it's still impressive, especially in high RPM's. The handling is phenomenal, and the cargo space is surprisingly good, thanks to the fold-down back seats that essentially give you a hatchback. The sedan is also longer than the hatch, making it more practical. The AWD system is top-notch, making it an excellent choice for winter driving. Overall, the WRX is a reliable and affordable option that handles incredibly well. It's a great alternative to the Civic, and I'm confident that sales will continue to rise!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2019 Impreza Premium (hatch) that I bought in late September 2018. Unfortunately, after 16 weeks, I began hearing a loud clunking noise when I ran over minor road bumps. I took it to the dealership on Thursday 2/7/2019 and I'm still waiting for a prognosis. It sounds like a suspension problem to me. On the bright side, the dealer did give me a 2019 loaner and stated that everything is warranty covered. I did a lot of research before buying and thought I made a good choice, but this has definitely been a challenge. This experience has made me question my loyalty to Hondas, which I have driven for the past 30 years (10 new in that time). I'm hoping for the best, but unfortunately, things didn't work out and I ended up trading the car on July 13. Thank you for listening to my story.

My wife and I recently went car shopping and ended up at a Subaru dealership. We were pleasantly surprised by the polite and accommodating staff. My wife had previously owned a Subaru and we quickly fell in love with the hatchback. After purchasing the car, we took it on a 2000 mile road trip and were impressed by its smooth and quiet ride. Despite its compact size, the car is surprisingly roomy. I was particularly pleased with the tech features, including the apple and android connectivity, integrated garage door opener, compass, WiFi, and exterior temperature. The ability to add apps to my phone to locate, lock, and unlock the vehicle is a great convenience, especially since I have a tendency to lock my keys in the car. Additionally, the car's health can be monitored and service and recall notifications are sent directly to my phone. While the 2.0i and CVT transmission don't offer a lot of power, the fuel economy is impressive. The seats are firm and supportive, but may not be the most comfortable for long trips. The eyesight feature is a great safety addition, correcting lane drift and offering adjustable cruise control. The only downside is that the car sits quite low, making it difficult for older individuals to get in and out and causing it to scrape on big dips. However, this can be easily remedied with a set of strut spacers. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my new Subaru and would highly recommend it to friends. I am now a proud Subaru fan!
