2019 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2019 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2019 Subaru Impreza has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the brakes, fuel pump, infotainment system, and transmission.

  • Denso Fuel Pump Failure: A class action lawsuit has been filed against Subaru for defective Denso low-pressure fuel pumps, which can cause the engine to stall out. The impellers inside the pumps may have been excessively exposed to a drying agent during manufacturing, leading to cracks, fuel absorption, and deformation.
  • Subaru STARLINK Problems: The infotainment system heavily relies on a touch screen interface that freezes randomly, stops responding to touch inputs, and sometimes requires the car to be shut off for over an hour before it starts working again.
  • Transmission Issues: A single factory worker was found using an improper torque wrench technique while tightening a cable nut in the CVT select lever of the 2021 Impreza, potentially affecting the gear selector's functionality. Additionally, there have been reports of stalling due to a defect in the transmission.
  • Rodents Chewing Soy Wires: Rodents are attracted to the soy-derived wire coatings used in many Subaru vehicles, causing costly repairs.
  • Subaru EyeSight Problems: The EyeSight technology has been known to fall asleep on the job, particularly in bad weather driving. It is generally regarded as bulky and an overly expensive upgrade on higher trim levels.
  • Other Issues: Owners have reported issues with the car's battery dying, windshield cracking, steering being too sensitive, stalling, and Bluetooth connectivity problems.

These issues are based on owner complaints and may not represent all 2019 Subaru Impreza vehicles. Potential buyers should consider these problems and consult with a trusted mechanic or dealership for further information.

2024-11-08

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
  • VIN: 4S3GTAD63K3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Rear wheel bearing premature wear. Originally installed wheel bearings were replaced, under warranty, at 44,137 miles. Same bearings then had to be replaced again at 62,486 miles. Both replacements were done by Beardmore Subaru in Nebraska. A failed wheel bearing at high speed could result in a catastrophic accident, and requiring replacement at these low mileage levels is indicative of poor design or substandard parts.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
  • VIN: 4S3GTAD64K3
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Vehicle sways significantly and continuously left and right in lane at highway speeds, including in low or no wind conditions, since the car was new. This happens regardless of whether eyesight/lane keep assist is enabled or not, and all tire pressures are regularly monitored and at manufacturer recommended levels. Changing tires from the OEM Continental Pro Contact to Michelin CrossClimate 2, while maintaining OEM wheels and 205/55R16 tire size, has not impacted the car's behavior. This weaving occurs at speeds of 50-70 mph on the highway, including on straight, smooth road. Swaying does not disappear with absence of adjacent vehicles influencing air turbulence. Neighboring vehicle air wakes will cause significant additional pushing of the car to the opposite side of the lane. The steering feel of this car on the highway is extremely "floaty" and unsettling. It is challenging to maintain lane with no surrounding cars, and it is extremely dangerous when passing vehicles.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: 4S3GKAD62K3
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering pump on this car makes it feel like it is floating on the road at highway speeds. The tires are like new and have the correct amount of air pressure. As someone familiar with power steering pumps, this behavior is consistent with a pump that is either delivering too much fluid or too little during acceleration. It is a dangerous situation since it gives the driver the impression that the car is losing contact with the road.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-12
  • VIN: 4S3GTAC61K3

  • Summary: The cowl that fills the gap between the bottom of the windshield and the hood is defective and warps from the heat of the engine. This warping leaves a huge gap that exposes the bottom of the windshield and allows debris and water under the hood of the car. I was told this was a known issue with multiple Subaru models. The auto glass specialist I was sent to did not have a fix other than replacing it whenever it warps, which is prohibitively expensive when it only lasts about a year.

Negative 2019 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Roderick Christiansen 2024-11-09

I purchased the 2019 Subaru Impreza hatchback. After six months, the struts started making a crinkling noise. I took it in and the dealer replaced the struts. Two years later, the struts started making noises again and it was outside the warranty. The dealer insisted on replacing them again. It is unusual for me to have issues with struts, especially after only three years of driving, and regular driving on normal streets, and 30,000 miles. Despite the poor acceleration, especially with passengers, and the wonky phone connection and CarPlay functions, one good benefit is that it has a huge turn radius. Overall, I am disappointed with my purchase.

  2. Hans Zemlak 2024-03-29

I drove my 2011 Impreza happily for 180,000 miles until I finally traded it in for a 2018 model. However, I was disappointed with the new car. Like other reviews here, mine must have been a lemon because it drove jerkily in traffic at low speeds. I took it to the dealer twice, but they said they could not replicate the problem, so there was nothing they could do unless check engine lights came on. They suggested it might be bad gas, but I am sure it was not since it did it most of the time, especially in very warm weather. Unfortunately, I had to trade the car in, and I am no longer driving a Subaru.

  3. Raymond Bartoletti 2024-03-21

The engine in this car could use a bit more power, but overall it's a great choice. The on-dash computer that logs your miles per gallon of gas may not be entirely accurate, as it shows an average of only 24 miles per gallon and 23 miles per hour while driving. While 24 miles per gallon may be more typical of a truck or sporty engine, it's still a decent figure. If you're looking for a fun and affordable option, this car or any Subaru Impreza is a great choice. Keep up the good work, Subaru!

  4. Freddie Bergstrom 2024-01-13

I have encountered several issues with my vehicle, including excessive oil consumption, slow acceleration, frequent driver window malfunctions, and an extreme rev hang. Additionally, the air conditioning system is not functioning properly, only blowing hot air. In hindsight, I regret not purchasing a Prius or a Honda Fit.

  5. Karson O'Kon 2024-01-06

This is all: The engine could be stronger and the manual transmission may not be the most efficient. Second gear may not get you over 40 mpg. The shifter is a bit short and it can be hard to find Neutral. However, I personally find the VW Golf to be more fun.

Positive 2019 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Kieran Ferry 2025-01-16

This car is great, except for the fact that it doesn't have the space of an SUV. However, it's still good for a sedan. As someone who is 6'3, I have plenty of leg room. It's fast like a sports car, making it a great commuter car. While it picks up decently, it's not really meant for speed. The car handles very well and gets great gas mileage. I bought it used with 6k miles and have had 0 issues in my ownership. Mine is fully loaded with Eyesight, heated seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system. The sound system is amazing and the touch screen is top-notch. Apple CarPlay is great and definitely worth getting that package. It's way better than buying a Corolla, although you will lose a little MPG. However, you get AWD and a way better handling and stylish car overall. The sport rims and suspension definitely make it handle a lot better. For me, having this car is not worth it, so I plan on trading it in and getting something cheaper like a used Camry hybrid to save money. The sport model is definitely worth the extra money as it makes commuting a lot better and handles amazingly on the highway. Overall, I give it 5 stars. It's literally everything but fast.

  2. Lesley Powlowski 2024-11-25

Aaron was such a friendly and helpful salesperson! He really understood what I was looking for in a car and went above and beyond to find the perfect one for me. I was also impressed with how well-run and COVID-safe the dealership was.

  3. Andrew Schuppe 2024-11-21

    I love this car!!!!

I've been driving the Impreza hatchback for about a year and a half now and I must say, I have no major complaints. When I was shopping for a car, I was considering a number of SUVs and similar small hatchbacks. However, after test driving the Impreza hatchback, I found that it had just as much room as other SUVs such as the RAV4 or CX5. I was impressed with the rear seat room and rear headroom, as well as the ability to comfortably seat three adults and two adults when needed. The front seats are also quite roomy, which was important to me as I'm 6'3. Cargo room is also pretty good. With the seats up, it can fit two golf bags and quite a bit of stuff. Folding down the seats, it can fit skis and my bike. This has made the Impreza very easy to live with over the past year. The Impreza gets decent gas mileage, though other competitors to the Impreza have superior gas mileage. From a mix of highway and city driving, I average 24-25 depending on the season. That number would have been much higher if I had gone with a Civic hatch or a Corolla hatch. However, the Impreza does have full-time AWD. The all-wheel-drive system has been impressive while driving in the snow and on gravel. With the boxer being longitudinally placed, the car has a rear bias giving it good performance in low traction settings as well as overall performance. Powertrain-wise, the Impreza is decent. It uses more oil compared to equivalent inline engines and is also down on power. The engine has suitable power which is enough for day-to-day use, though torque is hard to find anywhere below 3k. The five-speed has long throws and is relatively clunky which makes it hard to get used to. On days below 20 degrees, the transmission is a pain to use and crunches into gear until it is warmed up.Compared to the cvt option, I would recommend the manual as the better pick. It does a great job of hiding the car's low power and can be satisfying to use once you have learned the transmission better. The Impreza has good technology for its price, including the helpful optional keyless entry and tap to lock feature. The improved 6-speaker sound system is decent, and the auto-dimming rear and side view mirrors (optional) make night driving easier. Although the halogen headlights on the Impreza sport aren't great, they do the job. We have had a good experience with reliability and have passed 100k miles with no issues so far. Overall, the Impreza has been a fun car to live with and we have no regrets after getting this car. While there might be better options out there on paper, the Impreza doesn't disappoint, except for a couple of small things.

The 2019 model is a great car to test drive. It's very quiet and has a smooth ride, with excellent visibility. The front seats are comfortable and the rear seats offer plenty of room. The tire size is 205 50 by 17, which may seem a little unusual, and Firestone is not my preferred brand of tires. However, the handling is good and the pickup is decent. The CVT transmission responds pretty well. The all-wheel drive is, of course, the strong point of this car. The upgraded radio is a nice touch, but the speaker performance is fair at best. The trunk space is only 12.4 cubic feet, which is not very competitive. Overall, this car is safe, smooth-riding, and definitely worth a test drive.
