2020 Subaru Impreza problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2020 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2020 Subaru Impreza is known for its reliability, with no major issues reported by owners. However, some common problems have been noted, including windshield wiper issues, worn-out brakes, and chipping paint.

  • Windshield Wiper Issues:
Windshield wiper issues are the most widespread complaint from 2020 Impreza owners, with problems appearing around 10,000 miles. The wiper motor is known to wear out quickly, requiring replacement. A new wiper motor costs around $200, and the installation process is relatively straightforward.
  • Worn-Out Brakes:
Some 2020 Subaru Impreza owners have reported worn-out brakes within the first 15,000 miles. The brake pads tend to wear down quicker than in some other cars, with a new set of brake pads costing around $250 and rotors costing an additional $400 if they have been damaged.
  • Chipping Paint:
Chipping paint is another problem that some Impreza models face within the first 1,000 miles, particularly on the front bumper and hood. The only solution is repainting the affected panels, which can cost around $1,000 per panel.

These problems are relatively minor compared to other small cars on the market, leading to lower repair costs as the Impreza ages. Regular annual maintenance costs for the 2020 Impreza are a bit higher than the competition, at $613 per year.

It is important to note that the 2020 Subaru Impreza has only one recall, which covers the fuel pump. The fuel pump may fail, causing the engine to stall. Subaru will replace the fuel pump in affected models for free.

In conclusion, while the 2020 Subaru Impreza is generally reliable, it is crucial to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the vehicle's longevity and maintain its value.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
  • VIN: 4S3GTAU62L3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The windshield spontaneously cracked while sitting in my driveway. Windshield had no chips, damage, etc. The weather has been in the upper 70's, so no inclement weather. Upon researching, I found that many other Subaru owners have had the same issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 4S3GTAB60L3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: Both rear doors will intermittently not open when unlocked from both the inside or the outside. I am unsure if this is electrical or related to the door components itself. This is a hazard because passengers have been locked in the back of the car, and needed to climb out from the front or needed me to open the door from the outside if it will open—which could be a deadly amount of extra time in an emergency situation where passengers need to quickly exit the vehicle. This issue has been going on over a year, but I did not take it in until two months ago because I rarely had back passengers. That has changed, so I took it in. I have brought the car to the dealership three times for this issue, which is as of now still unresolved, with the following results: 1st visit: They told me child lock was on and turned it off. (I do not believe this, as the doors would occasionally open correctly from the inside—so that would mean child lock is also faulty) 2nd visit: They found weak actuators in both doors and replaced them. 3rd visit: Currently still in the shop for other unrelated issues, but they are having a hard time diagnosing the cause since the doors will open for them—but the lady who checked me in experienced the door sticking with me, and she said she could tell something was wrong.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-18
  • VIN: 4S3GKAV65L3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Windshield breaks (cracks) very easily. I have owned/driven cars for 45 years, during the first 41 years I have only had to replace one (1) windshield. Since I have owned this vehicle (Subaru), I am now onto windshield number five (5). Are they making these windows with inferior materials or thinner? I hate to think that an inferior window will not hold up or perform as designed in a major accident, possibly causing greater injury or death.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-31
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 4S3GTAS65L3
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Passenger Air-bag igniter's wiring shorted out releasing gas into car. The windows were up and the car was not running. I was sitting in passenger side went to light my cigarette and with no warning at all KABOOM!!! Car exploded catching my hair on fire as well as 2nd and 3rd degree burns on hands and 1st and 2nd degree burns on face. The explosion carried so much force that the doors and back hatch were dented outward making it impossible to shut and lock doors properly. Explosion was so loud the people inside the bar thought a bomb had gone off. This incident was not reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or insurance company due to the fact the car was stolen directly after incident due to the fact that the doors could not shut properly. Prior to this incident no warning lights had gone off to indicate a malfunction in the passenger airbag or the wiring. I guess I was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-28
  • VIN: 4S3GKAB62L3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: On 3 separate occasions since I've had my car, it has powered off completely without warning while driving. This is very dangerous could cause a severe accident or death. I called a tow truck on 3 separate occasions (1/27/23; 2/26/24; 2/28/24) to take it to the dealer or car repair business. Then after 20 - 30 minutes, it starts up again like normal. This make of cars made in 2020 have recalls for this same problem except for the model I have. The maker of these cars are not responding to keep their customers safe and continue to lie about the problems these cars are having. They are poorly made and extremely unsafe.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
  • VIN: 4S3GTAD60L3
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: A loud rumbling noise and vibration occurs while braking at high speed. Braking force seems unaffected but the noise in concerning. Upon inspection and a test drive, Subaru confirmed the issued and noticed uneven brake pad wear on the front brakes and leakage in the front caliper. Subaru recommended replacement of front calipers, pads, and rotors. Subaru replaced pads and rotors. The noise continues to occur occassionally. Subaru is recommending replacement of front brake calipers but is unable to replace them due to a shortage. I am concerned the brakes or other components may fail due to unusual wear. TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-26
  • VIN: 4S3GKAU64L3
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: P205/50R17 Driver side rear tire suddenly experiencing lots of pressure compared to others. Example 27.7 psi on a subject tire compared to 32.0 psi on others after approximately one week of garage storage. Upon inspection, tread separation/ visible cracking is visible on approximately 1/2 of the circumference of the tire. No warning lights from the vehicles tire pressure monitor system has activated and no trouble codes for that system or others are present, indicating the vehicle at least is not aware of a problem with the tire. Tire pressure sensor reports good battery, accurate pressure when compared to Tire gauge pressure, and reports temperature of approximately the ambient temperature (at the moment, is currently 57.0°F). Vehicle has been mostly garage kept since purchase due to Covid. Has experienced normal North Carolina Summer temperatures though recently within two weeks North Carolina has had some of the coldest weather in some time (Lows mid teens, highs low 30s). Manufacturer has been contacted and currently awaiting response. With my previous experience and knowledge in the automotive industry, it appears that the visible cracking on the tire is relatively new. The inner portions of the cracked area, for instance, are clean and free of any debris, dust or dirt.

Negative 2020 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Johnny Krajcik 2024-11-06

I purchased the 2019 Subaru Impreza hatchback. After six months, the struts started making a crinkling noise. I took it in and the dealer replaced the struts. Two years later, the struts started making noises again and it was outside the warranty. The dealer insisted on replacing them again. It is unusual for me to have issues with struts, especially after only three years of driving, and regular driving on normal streets, and 30,000 miles. Despite the poor acceleration, especially with passengers, and the wonky phone connection and CarPlay functions, one good benefit is that it has a huge turn radius. Overall, I am disappointed with my purchase.

  2. Wilfredo Hessel 2024-10-09

As a proud owner of my first new car, I chose a Subaru Impreza over the WRX STI due to its similar look and better gas mileage. However, I am disappointed with the gas mileage I have been getting so far, which is significantly lower than expected. Despite having less than 2000 miles on the car, I am only getting an average of 14 mpg, which is a far cry from the advertised EPA rating. As a responsible car owner, I will be bringing it in for service and addressing this issue. I am confident that the dealership will take care of this problem and ensure that I can fully enjoy my new car without any further issues.

  3. Willis Hahn 2024-03-07

The engine in this car could use a bit more power, but overall it's a great choice. The on-dash computer that logs your miles per gallon of gas may not be entirely accurate, as it shows an average of only 24 miles per gallon and 23 miles per hour while driving. While 24 miles per gallon may be more typical of a truck or sporty engine, it's still a decent figure. If you're looking for a fun and affordable option, this car or any Subaru Impreza is a great choice. Keep up the good work, Subaru!

  4. Dagmar Zieme 2024-02-24

I drove my 2011 Impreza happily for 180,000 miles until I finally traded it in for a 2018 model. However, I was disappointed with the new car. Like other reviews here, mine must have been a lemon because it drove jerkily in traffic at low speeds. I took it to the dealer twice, but they said they could not replicate the problem, so there was nothing they could do unless check engine lights came on. They suggested it might be bad gas, but I am sure it was not since it did it most of the time, especially in very warm weather. Unfortunately, I had to trade the car in, and I am no longer driving a Subaru.

  5. Erik Rau 2024-02-07

Just a heads up, the windshield on this car seems to be quite fragile. Unfortunately, I've had to replace it twice in less than 8000 miles due to damage from small pebbles on the road. While I'm not too happy about this, I'm hoping it's just a fluke and not a common issue. I'm considering trading it in for a Honda, but I'll keep you posted. Just wanted to share my experience with you. Thanks!

Positive 2020 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Cleveland Jenkins 2025-01-04

No complaints! This car is great both around town and on the highway. It also gets good mileage. I would definitely lease it again and am even considering buying it at the end of the lease.

  2. Aidan Nader 2025-01-02

You made a great choice with this car! It handles really well and is super comfortable, with plenty of room in the back seat and lots of cargo space when you fold the seats down. The base model comes with a lot of great features, like a touch screen, A/C, AWD, tinted glass, power windows, and a backup camera. While the mileage isn't quite as high as advertised, you can still expect to get around 30 mpg, which is pretty good. The only downsides are that it can be a little noisy on the highway and it would be nice if the backup camera beeped when objects are close. Overall, it sounds like you've had a great experience with this car in the month that you've owned it!

  3. Wade Wolf 2024-11-21

We bought this car specifically for a teenager. It's safe, drives great, and looks awesome. Your kid is going to love it!

  4. Santa Bradtke 2024-10-01

Insurance rates for Subaru are relatively very low. It's not easy to find AWD on cars the size of Impreza. Additionally, it has more safety features than its competition. While acceleration is not great, it is adequate and comparable to other cars in its class.

  5. Donnell Schowalter 2024-09-11

The car has a vertical screen that looks good in photos, but unfortunately, it is poorly made both in terms of software and hardware. Although CarPlay would improve it, it tends to disconnect regularly no matter what I do. Personally, I would prefer an aftermarket double-din unit with a larger CarPlay screen instead of the giant vertical screen that only uses 40% for CarPlay, which is smaller than the external one would be.
