2010 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2010 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2010 Subaru Impreza has been reported to have several common problems, based on complaints from owners. These issues include:

  • Check Engine Light Due to Failed Knock Sensor: Another common issue is the check engine light turning on due to a failed knock sensor. This is the most common cause of the check engine light turning on intermittently when driving the Impreza. A replacement knock sensor is readily available and easy to install.
  • Oil Leaks: The Subaru Impreza is known to leak oil from the rear due to a plastic oil baffle plate that is prone to failure. Subaru has released an improved design, which can be found on the drop-down parts list. This issue is more of an inconvenience than a serious problem, but it's recommended to replace the faulty part as soon as possible.
  • Clutch Chatter: The clutch in the 2010 Subaru Impreza has been reported to chatter when starting the car from cold. If the car is still under warranty, the dealer will replace the clutch for free. If there's no warranty, a complete clutch assembly can be found on the BreakerYard parts list and replaced.
  • Black Smoke From Exhaust (Turbocharged Models): Thick black smoke coming from the exhaust, accompanied by a burning oil smell, is a common problem in turbocharged models of the 2010 Subaru Impreza. This issue is caused by skipping oil changes, which leads to oil sludge and muck buildup, and a blocked oil filter. Regular maintenance and replacing the oil filter can prevent this problem.
  • Long Brake Distance: The brakes in the 2010 Subaru Impreza are under-specified, causing a long brake distance and an unresponsive brake pedal. Installing a whole new brake kit on both sides of the front of the car is the recommended solution.
  • Crunching/Knocking Gears: A crunching noise and knocking sound when moving from 2nd to 3rd gear is a known flaw in the gearbox system of the 2010 Subaru Impreza. The synchromesh system is the cause of this problem, and replacement synchromesh systems can be found on the parts list. However, installation can be challenging.

These common problems in the 2010 Subaru Impreza are based on complaints from owners and should be taken into consideration when purchasing or maintaining this vehicle. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help prevent further complications and extend the vehicle's lifespan.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
  • VIN: jf1gh6d63ah
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The driver side visor hangs in the face of the driver. It will not stay up against the window, so it blocks the drivers ability to see. The driver must take a hand off the steering wheel to hold it out of the way, and have it block the blazing sun so that she can see the road. This is very unsafe. The passenger side visor fell right off, so the sun shines right in the driver's eyes from that side of the windshield. Both need to be replaced, and/or have their mechanisms replaced so they are safe to use and don't block the driver's vision.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-02
  • VIN: JF1GR8H67AL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD THE MOST RECENT AIRBAG RECALL PERFORMED ON MY CAR RECENTLY. I LATER RECEIVED TWO SEPARATE LETTERS IN THE MAIL ADVISING ME TO CALL/TEXT "FIX" TO PHONE NUMBERS 877-244-0533 OR 844-898-7574 BECAUSE MY CAR IS SUPPOSEDLY STILL IN NEED OF AN AIRBAG RECALL FIX. I HAVE VERIFIED THROUGH SEVERAL SOURCES THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT SUBJECT TO ANY FURTHER RECALLS. THESE LETTERS ARE APPARENTLY PHISHING SCHEMES, AS THE PHONE NUMBERS ARE NOT LISTED AS BEING NHTSA NUMBERS. THE LETTERS INCLUDE THE SUBARU AND NHTSA LOGOS AT THE TOP. THE WEBSITE LISTED AT THE BOTTOM OF BOTH LETTERS IS "SAFEAIRBAGS.COM". WHAT DISTURBS ME MOST IS THAT THE LETTERS INCLUDE MY VEHICLE VIN INFORMATION, AS WELL AS MY NAME AND MAILING ADDRESS. THE ONLY WAY THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IS IF MY SERVICING DEALERSHIP SHARED OR SOLD MY INFORMATION TO 3RD PARTY COMPANIES. BETWEEN THAT AND THE FACT THAT THESE LETTERS APPEAR TO BE PHISHING FOR MORE PERSONAL INFORMATION, I AM OUTRAGED THAT THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED. WHAT RECOURSE DO I HAVE, IF ANY?

ON TUESDAY I HAD EXPERIENCED A LACK OF POWER WHEN STARTING UP THE VEHICLE . I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE IN THE MORNING HOWEVER AROUND NOON I HAD DRIVEN 10 MILES FROM MY WORK AND HAD DOWN SHIFTED TO 1 GEAR FROM 2ND AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE FOLLOWING DAY I HAD THEN TRIED TO FIRE UP THE VEHICLE BUT IT WOULD NOT START. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS ON PAR, THE BATTERY WAS AT 86% OF LIFE WHICH NARROWED IT DOWN TO EITHER THE STARTER OR ALTERNATOR. HOWEVER BY THE LOOKS AND MY KNOWLEDGE OF THESE TYPES OF VEHICLES I BELIEVE THE ROOT OF THE MALFUNCTION LIES WITHIN THE STARTER. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY THE SECOND TIME I HAD TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE.

(Subaru) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Forester, 2008-2016 Impreza sedans, 2012-2016 Impreza station wagons, 2008-2014 WRX sedans (including STI), and 2013-2017 Crosstrek vehicles. Exposure to certain contaminants may cause the brake light switch to malfunction, preventing the brake lights from illuminating and also preventing keyless ignition vehicles from starting and CVT/automatic transmissions from being able to be shifted out of Park.
  • Consequence: Brake lights that do not illuminate properly will not alert other drivers that the vehicle is slowing or stopping, increasing the risk of crash.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake light switch, free of charge. The recall began April 15, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUE-90.

Negative 2010 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Zackery Braun 2024-10-07

Hi there! I recently traded in my 2008 Chevy Trailblazer to save money on car payments and gas. While I was trying to save money, I do feel like I made a mistake by not shopping around a bit more before making my decision. If you're looking for an AWD car, I would definitely recommend doing some research and checking out other options. While the Impreza wasn't the right fit for me, there are plenty of other AWD cars out there that might be a better fit for you. It's worth investing in a car that you love! I've been doing some research myself and have found some great options online. By the way, the dealer I bought from was just interested in selling a car, so I would recommend doing your own research before making a purchase. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Henry Rogahn 2024-08-01

This is a long term rental replacing a Mazda 3. The Impreza feels quite different, more like a Buick, with a floating sensation. Although I'm used to a hard suspension with precise steering, I don't have it here. The car floats over the road, which is nice for long trips, but not as much fun on twisty roads. The suspension in turns feels every bump and skips instead of holding the car in place. The OEM tyres are not great for handling. The Auto transmission doesn't always hold a gear or downshift on its own when going down the hill. The manual shift also doesn't hold the gear (even though 2 is shown on the dash). The engine has good power, but the transmission reduces it. Inside, the car is very comfortable with a good layout and nice equipment.

  3. Dejon Weber 2024-04-07

The car was great up until the 4700 mile marker, but unfortunately experienced a Ringland failure which caused it to break down. It has been at the dealership for 3 weeks now, awaiting repair. I have read about widespread issues with the engine, which the manufacturer is denying. After this experience, I don't have much faith in the car. It's disappointing to see that WRC caliber STI's are a thing of the past when they are offered in factory guise.

  4. Bertram Nader 2024-04-03

I recently purchased my first Subaru because I live in a colder climate and have a 25 mile commute to work every day. I wanted a vehicle with AWD, but still wanted a car, not a truck-style SUV. After researching the market and reading reviews, I chose this car and was very excited at first. However, I have been experiencing some inconsistencies with the vehicle that have been frustrating me. For example, I was surprised to find out that the car does not have automatic locks or headlights, but it does have heated seats and wipers. Although I received a free Sirius package, the sound quality is not great, as others have also mentioned. Additionally, the wipers, even when heated, tend to freeze up frequently, both in the front and back.

  5. Foster Auer 2024-03-06

This car burns oil and developed rod knocking due to lack of oil in the engine, which is highly dissatisfying. However, according to CA state law, a car cannot burn 4.5 quarts of synthetic oil in 7500 miles. It is important to note that the scheduled maintenance for my region is every 7500 miles for an oil change. While my experience with this car has been negative, it is important to consider individual circumstances and preferences when making a recommendation.

Positive 2010 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Casper Osinski 2024-10-17

Congratulations on your new Sube! It's great to hear that you're enjoying driving it. With 350 miles on the clock, you've already experienced its wonderful traction in the rain and impressive cornering ability. Although you mentioned that the shifter throw is a bit long, it's clear that you're still having a great time behind the wheel. You made a wise choice in opting for a car that was built 100% in Japan, as it's a testament to its quality. The dark gray paint looks stunning without any orange peel. It's understandable that the base model car has some plastic parts, but overall, the interior looks good. It's fantastic to hear that you love your Subie! Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us.

  2. Giovani Connelly 2024-10-10

Hey there! I've been on the lookout for a new car for a few years now. Luckily, my job takes me all over the country, so I've had the chance to test drive quite a few rentals. After much consideration, I decided to go with the Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. It's the perfect fit for my lifestyle and budget. One of my must-haves was all-wheel drive, and I'm happy to say that this car delivers. Plus, the fuel economy is great, which is important since I'm always on the road. I've already put over 7k miles on it in just two months, and I'm really impressed with how well it handles on ice and snow. The interior is pretty quiet, although rougher roads can cause some road noise. Overall, I'm really happy with my choice!

  3. Dave Johnston 2024-09-18

I recently sold my Honda Pilot to get a 5-door Subie due to a longer commute after moving. I have to say, everyone was right about the stereo - it's not great. However, I was expecting this after reading the reviews here. The ride is comfortable and the handling is decent, much better than the Pilot but not as good as my previous Prelude SH. The power is decent too. The gas mileage is 27mpg mostly freeway, which is a little low, but I wanted the AWD so it's a trade-off. I've only had it for 2 weeks, but I have no regrets about getting the Subie. I'll update once the weather gets wet in the Fall.

  4. Sylvan McLaughlin 2024-08-19

I have owned three Subarus, including a 97 Outback and a 2004 Forester. However, I am disappointed with the design of the 2010 Outback Sport. The driver seat height adjuster requires frequent pumping and is ill-designed, causing inadvertent contact that lowers the seat. Additionally, the front headrests are raked too far forward, causing constant head contact that is both annoying and distracting while driving. Despite bringing these issues to Subaru's attention, they have not been corrected. Furthermore, the silver outboard dash vents reflect in the outside rear view mirrors, requiring me to paint them flat black. Lastly, the radio is mediocre. Overall, I believe that these design flaws should be addressed by Subaru to improve the quality of their vehicles.

  5. Kirk McGlynn 2024-08-11

This car is a fantastic purchase for the money. The overall value is excellent, and the body design is mainstream. The all-wheel-drive system is unsurpassed, and the drivetrain is more than adequate. While the interior seating may look cheap, it is actually very comfortable. The driver's side seat has a barber chair-style manual crank up and down function that works beautifully. Although the radio is sub-par, the rest of this car is a class leader. When comparing features and cost, it is an unbeatable value.
