2014 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2014 Subaru Impreza problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Subaru Impreza 2014, several common problems have been identified:

  • Engine Oil Pump Seal Leak: This issue is located along the front of the engine behind the serpentine belt area. Symptoms include an oil light on the dashboard and oil drips or puddles under the vehicle. The problem is often caused by loose bolts holding the oil pump, leading to oil leaks and loss of oil pressure .
  • Engine Oil Consumption: Owners report low oil levels between changes without external leaks. Subaru boxer engines are known for excessive oil consumption due to oil sneaking past the oil rings on the pistons, entering the combustion chamber, and burning up, resulting in blue smoke from the tailpipe .
  • Underpowered Brakes: Many owners from 2011 to 2015 have complained about brakes being underpowered, leading to long braking distances and sluggish pedal response. Premium braking fluid and high-quality brake kits are recommended to enhance brake performance and safety .
  • AC Compressor and Climate System Issues: Complaints include problems with the AC compressor, blower motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, and refrigerant leakage. Owners have reported issues controlling the AC, premature replacements, and leaks in the climate system.
  • CVT Transmission Problems: The continuously variable transmission (CVT) in the Impreza has been a source of concern for owners, with issues such as slipping, overheating, stalling, and trouble controlling engine speed. Replacing faulty parts like solenoids and using CVT-friendly fluids can help mitigate these problems .

These common problems highlight various issues faced by Subaru Impreza 2014 owners, ranging from safety concerns like brake failures to mechanical issues such as oil leaks and transmission problems. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-10
  • VIN: JF1GPAR64EH
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: To whom this may concern, My name is [XXX] . I purchased my 2014 Subaru on December 13th, 2013. My car has 57,000 miles on it. It has loss of acceleration when entering a freeway. I push on the gas pedal harder and harder to try to get my car to obtain 60 mph. The car does not respond until minutes go by. The CVT transmission was replaced in June 2022. The car has not performed any better after the transmission replacement. I am the original owner of my car. Initially, my car performed very well, quick response to acceleration for the first 35-40 thousand miles. Then, it began to have lack of acceleration. The transmission was replaced by Subaru of America in June 2022 at around 48,000 miles. I brought my car to Elk Grove Subaru approximately 4 times since the transmission was replaced, each time I paid for their hourly diagnostic fee; between $165.00 to $195.00. Each time the service advisor said they found nothing wrong with my car. I took my car to two independent mechanics (One of them is a transmission repair shop) they each stated in writing that my transmission is slipping and has loss of power. I feel unsafe driving my car on the street as if shakes, shudders and jerks. I do not want to be a statistic in an accident on the freeway due to the lack of power trying to obtain speed while entering freeway and trying to keep my vehicle speed at a speed of barely 60 mph. My vehicle is still within the extended CVT warranty. I feel that the Subaru dealership is purposely avoiding acknowledgement of the failing transmission. Subaru is a big corporation. Many Subaru owners believe there needs to be an actual recall on their Subaru CVT transmissions. I do not feel safe driving my car. With 57,000 miles on a vehicle that's a potential safety hazard, Subaru needs to take more responsibility for their vehicles as people's lives are much more precious than their profit margins. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-26
  • VIN: JF1GPAL67E8
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission on my 2014 Subaru Impreza failed suddenly while I was driving about 70 mph in the middle lane of the interstate. My car began to decelerate rapidly, and I lost all ability to accelerate or even put my car in park. I was able to navigate to the side of the interstate and use the car's emergency brake to come to a stop. The event was extremely traumatic, and I have nightmares about losing control of my vehicle on that interstate with cars whizzing past me. I was stranded in a very remote area, barely making it onto the shoulder of the interstate, over an hour from my home and in a different state. During the three hours I waited for a tow on the side of I-5N, I discovered the many NHTSA bulletins issued regarding CVT transmission issues with the 2014 Impreza and the consequent extended warranty. Thus, I paid out of pocket to have my 2014 Impreza towed the thirty miles to the closest Subaru dealership, expecting the repair to be covered by the warranty. My car’s mileage is 71,612, and it is under 10 years old, falling within both requirements of the extended warranty. There had never been any indication of transmission trouble, and Subaru never contacted me to inform me of the known CVT transmission issues. No warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms ever appeared regarding the transmission. After inspecting my vehicle, the Subaru dealership verified a transmission issue, and claimed that the car was roughly 3 quarts low on CVT fluid. Despite NHTSA safety bulletins about known transmission fluid seepage issues in the 2014 Impreza, Subaru is trying to skirt responsibility for the known defect, and instead, they are claiming that it is the fault of a reputable independent mechanic stating that they *suspect* that since it was 3 quarts low because the independent shop did something wrong. However, records show otherwise. Subaru is not standing by its extended warranty and attempting to shirk responsibility for known CVT defects. Permission to inspect.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-12
  • VIN: JF1GPAC65E8
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving on the highway in Denver, the engine stalled - I later learned that a valve spring broke and went through the engine, destroying it. I lost all power - lost braking - but was able to steer the vehicle off to the side of the road. I subsequently learned that about 160,000 Subarus - the same vehicle year, the same model car, the same exact engine - have been recalled by Subaru. However, this car, which suffered the same exact problem was considering "outside the window" of the recall. If I had been on the freeway at a normal rate of speed this could have been a very dangerous accident. My concern is hundreds if not thousands of these cars are still on the road and Subaru is well aware of the problem.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-02
  • VIN: JF1GPAA68E8
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: One day my blower motor wouldn't turn on and my switch was actually stuck, unable to adjust at all. After checking all fuses and relays I pulled out the control panel and noticed significant electrical damage to both the switch itself and the wiring harness. This is a very dangerous fire hazard to myself and my family. I've done research and this IS NOT an isolated issue. There have actually been very many cases of the exact nature. There is even a service bulletin out for "HVAC blower fan inoperative" which includes my year make and model of vehicle. I feel if this isn't resolved on a large scale lives could be affected greatly or even lost. It is my recommendation this issue be moved to a national recall. I have included pictures of my own and also pictures from others with same issue as proof.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-19
  • VIN: JF1GPAD64EH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The Blower assembly in my car stopped working suddenly- When i looked into it, a short/electrical failure had happened that caused the wire harness and other components to melt inside the system. This appears to be a common failure similar Subaru cars, but the fact that the system can fail so significantly to burn/melt the connectors seems like a dangerous failure mode

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-24
  • VIN: JF1GPAK69E8
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My check engine light and other lights simultaneously lit up while driving 50 mph down the highway. The car started to “buck” slightly. I pulled over, let it cool a bit, checked the oil. Oil level and quality was fine. Took to a mechanic where I found the problem was with the CVT. This car has only 100,283 miles on it! It should not be having transmission problems. This is a defective system. Repairs are more than the car is worth. (Even though I’ve kept it in good shape).

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-02
  • VIN: JF1GPAL60E8
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The Vehicle is a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle ; this has now started to cause the vehicle in warm/hot weather to trigger EVAP codes. This is not fixed by checking gas cap or replacing anything else. I have had the vehicle to the dealership where I was told they dont know why , but ignore it. However living in a state that has inspections every year for tags, this is not possible. This is a well know issue and you can find hundreds of examples online of other people that have had the same problem.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-01
  • VIN: JF1GPAB65E8
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Passenger airbag turned off while driving with an adult passenger in seat. Pull over and turn car off it will be on again. Will happen completely at random when driving, not that often but about once a week. Dealer told me it was probably water damage to the sensor and to replace the whole seat for over 1000$ . Never heard of another cars airbag sensor system breaking or becoming u reliable if it gets wet....because car seats get wet all the time. And if I replace it it will get wet again. If someone sits on seat who is even the least bit sweaty it will turn itself off. But also will turn off when there is just a normal (non sweaty or wet ) adult person riding in seat, while in the middle of driving! It's extremely unsafe and if this is the design plan extremely unfair and ridiculous for the consumer.

  • VIN: JF1GV7F67EG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle in the driveway, the vehicle failed to restart after thirty minutes. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was due to the pump assembly and noticed that the connector was difficult to remove and had melted. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed there was an open circuit in the assembly. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified and offered a discount on the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000. RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY. FOUND OPEN CIRCUIT INTERNAL TO THE FUEL PUMP CAUSING OVERHEAT MELTING THE CONNECTOR ON THE FUEL ASSEMBLY TOP HAT WHICH CAUSED LOSE PRESSURE IN FUEL SYSTEM. PART NUMBER 42021AG010, Case # [XXX]-[XXX]. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-28
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF1GPAA67E8
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I was starting to reverse out of a parking spot in an underground parking lot. (It was about 10 am). The car accelerated and went backwards at top speed into a wall and door that led to elevators. It happened very suddenly. I did not have time to brake before impact. The car was still running after impact and I had to switch off the ignition to stop the engine running. The airbags did not deploy. A police report was not filed. I had ringing in my ears afterwards, was having difficulty focusing my thoughts. Pain in the tendons of my neck lasted a few days. I only realized later that I probably had a concussion from whiplash. My son was sitting in the back seat, and my daughter was standing nearby outside the car, but thank goodness, neither were injured. Fortunately no one was coming through the door into which the car crashed. The car was drivable despite the severe damage to the rear end. I drove it up to street level, where it was towed from to a body shop. The following week it was declared a total loss, and sent to salvage. I have not yet reported this to the manufacturer. It was only while I doing research to get a new car, that I stumbled upon the issue of subaru imprezas suddenly accelerating on their own. Now everything makes sense, although it doesn't lessen the trauma that we all experienced. I truly hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-02
  • VIN: JF1GPAC67E8
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Not quite sure what specific part or wiring location but it’s somewhere in the electrical system. The car is available for inspection upon request. Started out with electrical system on not allowing the windows to roll down and the Bluetooth connection malfunctioning to cause a high pitched screech. It is ear piercing and scared me half to death driving down the street with rush hour traffic and almost caused me to crash into someone. It does it at unprompted times and would be afraid to swerve into somebody and cause an accident. Trying to turn it off or turning the volume down makes it louder and the only way I’ve gotten it to stop is to turn off the car. A couple of days later, the power wouldn’t turn off on the media center or cycling through modes (FM/AM radio, Bluetooth, USB, CD) and caused the same high pitched screech. Now the drivers window does not roll all the way down and slams the window down the door at random times. Followed by the airbag sensor not enabling when an adult is sitting in the passenger seat. This can put passengers at risk if involved in an accident and can’t climb out the windows or the airbags from being deployed. The car is serviced at the dealership every time maintenance is needed. Dealership maintenance appoint is on Monday September 21st 2021 at the McCurley Dealership in Pasco Washington for other wear and tear maintenance but will ask them to inspect this as well. There has been no prior messages, symptoms, warning or maintenance lamps before this issue occurred. It started to do this back in the beginning of August 2021

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-09
  • VIN: JF1GPAA68E8
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine cooling system failed and put myself and my step-daughter at risk while driving on the freeway. When I got off the freeway, the vehicle stalled and I was unable to move the car. I got a tow to move the car. The electrical system was messing up for the windows and the radio, I was unaware of the other parts of the vehicle it was affecting. I just tolerated it for the time being. When my car overheated, The red warning temperature lights came on, the blue warning lamp that tells the temperature, and the tract warning lamp, as well as the check engine lamp. They did not turn on prior to this. I took the vehicle to John Hine Subaru. The car went from being my most reliable, to this unpredictable incident.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-13
  • VIN: JF1GV7E62EG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I own a 2014 Subaru Impreza WRX which was still under warranty(48xxx miles) I’ve been having issues with my vehicle where at times it shuts off on me whenever I come to a complete stop. I’ve taken it to a Subaru dealership multiple times and they always told me “They couldn’t replicate the problem or didn’t find any issue.” I was on my way back home from work when all of a sudden on the freeway the car completely turned off while driving highway speed. I was able to safely pull over on the highway and tried turning the car back on and the check Engine light was on with a flashing cruise control light, I turned it off and had it towed home. I read the code and it came out to be a P0011 and a P0021. I took it to a Subaru dealership that was close to me and was told they couldn’t find any problem and I insisted they check the car again and they said they did an inspection of the car and there wasn’t any problems. I was on my way to work as I began to accelerate the car stalled I turned the car on thinking I stalled the vehicle but a rattling sound became loudly audible. I checked my oil to see if it was low on oil but the dip stick still showed it had lots of oil. But I believe the engine is damaged. I’m tired of taking it to the dealership and being told there isn’t a problem when there’s in fact a major problem. I read through a lot of forums and bulletins and a lot of people have been having the same issues and I don’t know why there was never a recall to fix the faulty issues these vehicles have which is a horrible engine that is a ticking time bomb. This is a major issue and I believe this needs to be looked into.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-19
  • VIN: jf1gpal66e8
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: A pebble hit the windshield while driving on the interstate highway which creating a roughly 12 inch crack starting in the upper passenger-side of the windshield. Within 24 hours, that crack has increased in length, now extending to the middle of the windshield. This has not been assessed by any repair facilities.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-26
  • VIN: JF1GPAC65E8
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I purchased this vehicle 06/23/2021. I drove it the first time long distance (Concord NH to Stoughton MA) with a passenger for the first time three days after purchase. The passenger air bag is off light came on and would not register my passenger. It worked on and off the entire ride, starting with it working and then would shut off, on the highway, while my passenger never moved from the seat. I called the dealership and they said they would look at it. They did nothing, they blamed it on the seats having been steam cleaned (that dampness messes with the sensors? as if that's a reasonable reason my airbag won't deploy?) I asked if they checked the connections and they just blanket answered that they'd need to see it with the light on, and that 'i'm sure the technician checked everything'. I'm unsure how to do that other than driving to the dealership with a passenger the next time it happened? Today I drove it, again with a passenger, and it worked only one way on the trip. I pulled over, tried to shut off the car and turn it back on, had my passenger get out and back in the vehicle, nothing would fix the light being on and the airbag indicator saying that the airbag was off. I'm extremely concerned and honestly don't understand why any vehicle would have a sensor that SHUTS OFF the airbag. There is already a recall for this issue in Suburu Foresters, years 2015-2018 I believe. I would also very much like this resolved in my model, it is extremely unsafe and I'd prefer not driving it at all but have no choice right now. I would be happy to have this inspected by someone. The internet suggested loose connections, or a faulty seatbelt, or the sensor itself which is connected to the passengers seat. This component has only been inspected by Ed Reilly Suburu on Manchester St., in Concord NH and they did not fix it. The vehicle only has 52,000 miles on it and is supposed to be one of the safest brands of vehicle to drive.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-04
  • VIN: jf1gpal63e8
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Airbag notification light sometimes turns to off even when a passenger is in passenger seat. This causes me great concern as if I were in an accident would my passenger be protected? Looks like Subaru issued a recall for the 2012 model but not for the 2014 model. Please help me keep my passenger in the front seat safe and have Subaru fix this known problem.

2014 Subaru Impreza recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2014 Subaru Impreza.

2019-02-28
  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Forester, 2008-2016 Impreza sedans, 2012-2016 Impreza station wagons, 2008-2014 WRX sedans (including STI), and 2013-2017 Crosstrek vehicles. Exposure to certain contaminants may cause the brake light switch to malfunction, preventing the brake lights from illuminating and also preventing keyless ignition vehicles from starting and CVT/automatic transmissions from being able to be shifted out of Park.
  • Consequence: Brake lights that do not illuminate properly will not alert other drivers that the vehicle is slowing or stopping, increasing the risk of crash.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake light switch, free of charge. The recall began April 15, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUE-90.

Negative 2014 Subaru Impreza car reviews

I recently took my car in for service after the warranty had expired. The A/C wasn't working and I live in the snow belt so I don't use it much. The dealer informed me that I needed a new compressor for the A/C and new brakes for the front and rear. The total bill came to $3200. While I was surprised that the A/C needed such an expensive repair after only 4.5 years, I was even more surprised to hear that the brakes were in such bad shape. I had no issues with the brakes and another dealer had told me just two months prior that the linings were in good condition. As a careful driver, I know when my brakes need work and I can assure you that they were not as bad as the dealer claimed. Despite this experience, I have recently traded in my car for a different brand and will not be purchasing from Subaru again.

Despite the decent all-weather tires and optional paddle shifters, this car has been the worst I have ever owned. However, I must emphasize that these issues are not a reflection of my driving skills. The multiple electrical problems were eventually fixed by the dealer after several visits, but unfortunately, one issue remains unresolved. The seat warmers almost never work, and the dealer claims it is due to weather sensitivity, which I find hard to believe. Additionally, I experienced oil consumption issues despite using pricey synthetic oil, and I was not informed about the warranty extension for this issue during my 30,000-mile interval services at licensed dealers. Unfortunately, the transmission died suddenly less than two months after the last interval service, which was potentially dangerous. Despite my disappointment, I must acknowledge that this car handled well in the snow.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your first Subaru! The fuel economy is especially impressive for an all-wheel drive vehicle. I can imagine how exciting it must have been to take that corner at speed and feel the car body stay so stable. While the seats may be a bit hard for you, it's great to hear that they're still acceptable. It's also reassuring to know that you haven't had to make any major repairs yet, even after putting 16,000 miles on it. I can understand how exiting the back seat might be a bit tricky for adults with long legs, but overall it sounds like a great car. And it's wonderful to hear that your daughter loves it too! With almost 90,000 miles on it, it's impressive that it still gets great fuel economy and performs so well on snowy and icy roads. It's no wonder you decided to purchase a newer Subaru Legacy - they really are amazing cars. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

60,000 miles and no problems. The AWD system provides a reassuring feeling in rainy, snowy, and cornering conditions.

Your 2014 Impreza Sedan is 5 years old, and while you've only put 25,000 miles on it, it's a great dependable car and does an incredible job in the New England snow. It's wonderful to hear that you've found a car that can handle the winters in this region. It must make you feel very secure. It's also great to hear that you've only had one big problem with it in 5 years, needing to get the air conditioning serviced many times.
