The Maserati Levante (Tipo M161) was an executive crossover SUV produced by Italian manufacturer Maserati at the Mirafiori factory in Turin from 2016 to 2024. The Levante went on sale in Europe in May 2016, and in North America in September 2016, remaining on sale into 2024. Production of the Levante ceased by the end of March 2024, commemorated with the release of a top-spec 424BHP special edition.

The Levante was named after a warm, easterly wind that blows in the western Mediterranean Sea, southern France, down to the Strait of Gibraltar. The name of the wind, in turn, comes from the Latin word "levare", which means "to rise". Its design is based on the Kubang concept car that debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Announcements

The concept that led to the Levante, the Maserati Kubang, was unveiled in 2011 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Early models included Levante (350 PS) and Levante S (430 PS).

Canada models went on sale in September 2016. Early models included Levante (350 PS) and Levante S (430 PS). The Maserati Levante Trofeo was unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The Trofeo has 3.8 litre twin turbo V8 engine and Q4 all wheel drive, with 590 hp (440 kW) and 730 N⋅m (538 lbf⋅ft) peak torque.

  1. Fuel System Problems:
    • Fuel Line Sensor Housing: Owners have reported instances where the fuel line sensor housing may crack and leak fuel, potentially leading to engine stalls, crash risks, and fire hazards. This issue has prompted a recall by Maserati, with dealers replacing the faulty sensor housing free of charge.
  2. Electrical System Issues:
    • Seat Wiring Harness: Adjusting the front seats can cause the seat wiring harness to rub, leading to potential electrical shorts. Maserati has addressed this concern by inspecting vehicles and replacing the seat wiring harness as needed to prevent any electrical malfunctions.
  3. Safety Feature Concerns:
    • Seat Belt Automatic Locking Retractors: Some owners have experienced problems with the seat belt automatic locking retractors deactivating early, which can compromise the proper securing of child restraint systems. This issue affects compliance with safety standards and necessitates inspection and replacement of seat belt assemblies by dealers at no cost to owners.

Negative 2022 Maserati Levante car reviews

  1. Domenic Price 2025-01-29

The paint on my car looked beautiful at first, but unfortunately, after driving it for only 5 months and 5,066 miles, I noticed over 30 chips in the paint. Additionally, I have experienced some issues with the stereo, front tires rubbing, and a rattling noise at 20 miles an hour. Despite these issues, the car has good acceleration once it gets going. However, at 70 miles an hour, I can feel the road through the steering wheel and gas pedal. The brakes squeak, but they do stop the car quickly. Although I have been told that I am the only person experiencing these issues, I am hopeful that they can be resolved. I was even presented with a solution to trade it in for a better Maserati, but unfortunately, I would lose $20,000 in the process. Overall, I would recommend this car with caution and suggest doing thorough research before making a purchase.

  2. Jefferey Nienow 2024-11-03

Avoid purchasing this car. Despite only driving it for less than two weeks, the engine light has already turned on. This car has proven to be a poor investment.

  3. Kip Weber 2024-10-17

I love the beautiful design and solid performance of my Levante, but unfortunately, it can be quite annoying to drive on a daily basis. The car emits a continuous beeping sound if you don't hold your hands on the steering wheel in a specific way, or if you wear the wrong gloves while driving. I have tried to find a way to turn off this beeping, but neither my Maserati dealer nor I have been successful. Additionally, using left foot braking and then hitting the throttle with your right foot can cause the throttle to fail for a few seconds, which can be dangerous. I have experienced this issue a couple of times, and it can be quite alarming. I reported this problem to Maserati service, but unfortunately, they were unable to correct it. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Levante and appreciate its many benefits.

  4. Felix Predovic 2024-07-20

Great driving and the motor sounds amazing! The response is a bit low at full gas, but overall the Audi Q8 is the best option with the most equipment and a stunning design.

  5. Julian Hoeger 2024-04-11

The car initially caught my eye, however, at around 60,000 miles, issues began to arise and ultimately led to a complete engine failure at approximately 80,000 miles. Despite the high cost of replacement, I made the decision to invest in a new engine for $38,000. Unfortunately, the vehicle's value has significantly decreased and it is now worth only $10,000 in scrap. Although I paid over $100,000 for the vehicle when it was new, I have come to realize that it was not a wise investment.

Positive 2022 Maserati Levante car reviews

  1. Antwan Bergnaum 2025-03-24

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2018 Levante base model! It seems like you made a great choice. The Levante is a unique and stylish SUV that really stands out on the road. It's great to hear that it handles well and that the Ferrari designed twin turbo engine is meeting your needs. The interior materials are also impressive and add to the overall look of the vehicle. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with Maserati!

  2. Cade Sawayn 2025-03-12

I have both a Ghibli and a Levante, and I must say, they are both amazing cars. The Levante, in particular, is the best SUV I have ever had. I love the sport feature - when you go fast on the road, it lowers the car suspension and makes you feel like you are driving a sports car rather than an SUV. At some corners, the Levante takes better turns than my Ghibli. It is a much better car than any other luxury SUVs out there. The technology is simply unthinkable. There are so many little details that I learn something new on a daily basis, and I am constantly amazed at how they thought of every little detail. Words cannot describe it; it's better to drive one yourself than to hear me talk about it.

  3. Hardy Nicolas 2025-03-06

The interiors of the car are of exceptional quality. It came equipped with all the Adas (Autonomous driving Level 2). As for the road holding, with 4 Pirelli Sottozero, it has proven to be lake effect proof (I live in West Michigan). Honestly, even on dry roads, I cannot get close to the limit without risking to get my license burned. The engine, being a Ferrari engine, is impressive. My Levante towed my race car several times, even down to Georgia, and I experienced plenty of torque and towing at 70mph (this is the max speed I can publicly declare, isn't it?). The transmission temperature always remained in the normal range, even in summer. I have not done any serious off-roading, but I have driven on some muddy roads. I cannot express any reliable judgement, but the pneumatic suspension allows you to adjust the height from the ground, allowing pretty deep fords. The downside of buying this car is the fuel economy. It does everything (even racing on a track), but you just need to feed it. Another characteristic that could be improved is the storage volume, which is slightly bigger than my previous Lexus RX350. Unfortunately, we were hit by a violent storm, so I tested the off-road quality of the Levante by using the vehicle to clean my property. I was able to tow a cart full of wood uphill on a wet and steep trail without any issues.

  4. Lonnie Lubowitz 2025-03-04

I absolutely love the roar of this car! It's definitely not for those who prefer a quieter ride, but it looks amazing. The frameless door windows are a nice touch, and the heated steering wheel is a fantastic feature. The self-starting function is also incredibly convenient. The car handles great and performs very well in the snow. However, there are a few downsides to consider. Unfortunately, you can't permanently shut off the 'start and stop' feature, and there's no seat cooling. Additionally, you have to press 'accept' on the screen every time you start the car, although Lexus has corrected this issue. It's also a bit annoying that you have to press the button to talk on your cell phone every time you enter the car. Lastly, the start button is on the left side, which may be a bit awkward for right-handed individuals. Overall, I think this is a great car!

  5. Franco McKenzie 2025-02-27

My wife recently traded in her Porsche Macan S for a base Levante with full leather. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the seats are the most comfortable we have ever sat in. In comparison, her previous BMW X-3 with M-Sport PKG had very narrow seats. The Levante's Sport feature is also awesome. I noticed that the steering and NAV are from the same supplier as my Dodge Charger. For those who complained about the lack of steering wheel controls, they can be found in the manual. The radio controls are also conveniently located on the back of the steering wheel for easy access to volume, mute, and changing stations. Additionally, the voice activation feature allows for easy control of the phone, radio, and climate control. While this is a limited production car, it is a unique and special addition to any lot, especially when surrounded by 25 BMWs. :-)
